From Bull Run to Chancellorsville: The Story of the Sixteenth New York Infantry together with Personal Reminiscences.
New York & London: G. P. Putnam's Sons 1906. First edition of Union Major-General Newton Martin Curtis's memoirs; lengthily inscribed by him to American Civil War nursing pioneer Clara Barton. Octavo original cloth with gilt titles to the spine and front panel illustrated with four tissue-guarded engraved portraits including frontispiece of Major-General Curtis. Association copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "Presented to Miss Clara Barton in grateful appreciation of her careful supervision of hospitals and devoted attention to the disabled soldiers of the Civil War. Newton Marin Curtis Christmas 1906." The recipient Clara Barton took the lead in developing a program to care for soldiers wounded in the American Civil War. At the time of the inscription Barton had just resigned from her position as president of the American Red Cross and was working on her autobiography The Story of My Childhood which was published in 1907. An exceptional association. Newton Martin Curtis was a Union officer during the American Civil War and a member of the United States House of Representatives from New York. On May 15 1861 Curtis volunteered in the Union Army as a captain in Company G of the 16th New York Infantry. He fought in the Peninsula Campaign and was wounded in a minor engagement at West Point Virginia. On October 23 1862 he transferred to the 142nd New York Volunteer Infantry serving as lieutenant colonel until his promotion to colonel on January 21 1865. As commander of the 142nd New York Infantry he fought in the Bermuda Hundred Campaign of May 1864. He took command of the 1st Brigade 2nd Division X Corps during the Siege of Petersburg. Curtis received a brevet promotion to brigadier general on October 28 1864 for his actions at the Battle of New Market Heights. G. P. Putnam's Sons hardcover books

George Yard Lombard Street: William Phillips Published 1803 - 1804. First Issue. Thee volumes well illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece and 119 hand coloured plates as usual the plates are erratically bound but all are present all edges gilt in Volume 2 bound in modern blue cloth with only very slight signs of use. Despite the rather plain binding the contents are overall in remarkably bright condition. There is a little offsetting of plate on to text and occasionally of text on to plate but there are only six plates where this is really noticeable and of these plate 91 is rather poor. In Volume 1 the second plate is bound slightly on a skew so that the margin protrudes slightly at the top and fore-edge; in Volume 2 a number of the descriptive leaves are bound together at the end rather than opposite the plate they describe. Volume 3 concludes with Thortnon's "Sketch of the Life and Writings of the Late Mr William Curtis 33 pages. Ignoring the minor oddities of the set there is a remarkable freshness about the paper quality and the colouring. . First Edition. Cloth. Good. William Phillips Hardcover

It was first published in 1613 and was reissued 15 times for the last time ca. 1765. It was far more popular than the translation of Glazemaker that was reprinted only 2 times. Not much is known of the translator A. Snel. Van der Aa only records what we know already that one A. Snel produced a translation of Curtius Rufus. The short preface of the second edition of 1627 signed by one Albrecht Snel which is reprinted here in this 4th edition learns us more. It is in fact a dedicatio to the 'Rulers' of the city of Delft and the 'Opper-Heeren' that is curators of the local Schola Latina. Albrecht Snel tells the reader that he is a teacher at the local Schola Latina and that he wants to dedicate his translation as first-fruits to the excellent members of the City Council just like the old Greeks did when they wanted to thank their benefactors. He calls his bosses 'Voedster-Heeren' i.e. sponsors or patrons of Greek and Latin and of those whom they charge to teach them at the local school. From the preface of the first edition of 1613 of this translation and which was left out in later editions we learn more about Snel. We learn something about his aim while translating Curtius Rufus. His aim is didactic. We must Snel says learn from the best examples available what to do and what to avoid. We can do this best by reading the ancient historians of whom Curtius Rufus is the best. Snel turns against those who proclaim that Dutch is inferior to Latin. We learn also which text Snel used for his translation the 'Raphalyn'. This must be the edition of 'De rebus gestis Alexandri Magni' published 'ex officina Plantiniana Raphelengii' in Leiden in 1606. The translation is preceded by 'Byvoeghingh uit verschyden schrijvers tot vervullinghe van Quinti Curtii eerste' and 'tweede' boec.' Alexander visited this famous oracle in order to obtain an answer concerning the divinity of his origin. Old & small paper label on the back Note: This is a typical Variorum edition. It offers a 'textus receptus' which is widely accepted accompanied with the commentary and the annotations of various specialists taken or excerpted from earlier useful normative or renewing editions. Editions like these 'cum notis Variorum' were useful but never broke new ground. The production of these sometimes overloaded 'dustbins' of knowledge was the specialty of Dutch scholars of the 17th and 18th century. The compilers seldom were great scholars but often hard working schoolmasters. Their involvement in publishing a new edition was limited to the necessary. In a Variorum edition of Claudianus published by the same Elzevier in 1665 we get a glimpse of such labour. There the 'typographus' i.e. Louis and/or Daniel Elzevier tells the reader that a 'vir diligentissimus' the schoolmaster Cornelius Schrevelius excerpted from the best sources all that was necessary for a good understanding of the text. 'Quod ad praestantissimi poetae intellectum pertineret ex optimis Doctissimorum Virorum' then follows a number of names of Claudianus editors and commentators 'aliorumque qui antea in eo illustrando elaborarunt notis & commentariis selectissima quaeque excerpsit'. This 'Variorum' edition of Curtius Rufus of 1673 was as it happens produced by the above mentioned Cornelis Schrevelius 1608 - 1664 who took his doctoral degree in Paris as a Doctor of Medicine in 1627. Hence C.S.M.D. on the title that is 'Cornelis Schrevelius Medicus Doctor'. He was Rector of the Schola Latina at Leiden. § The Roman historian Quintus Curtius Rufus probably first century A.D. is the author of the only surviving monography on Alexander the Great in Latin. He was an historian enough to use sources which drew from different traditions conscientiously. His aim was not to write great literature but his 'Historia' certainly possesses great narrative qualities acquired by a thorough knowledge of the epic and historiographic tradition and a training in Roman rhetoric. NP s.v. Curtius This work consisting of 10 books did not survive in its entirety the first 2 books are lost. The text of Curtius Rufus is followed in this edition by a rather strange philological accomplishment by the German scholar Johannes Casper Freinsheim 1608-1660. He endeavoured to repair the loss of the 2 books that did not survive by a composition of his own a feat which was much admired by his contemporaries. He published this new text earlier in his edition of 1640. Moss declares that this supplemented text is 'scarcely descernible from that of Q. Curtius' Provenance: The label on the back reads: 'Litt Antiq. A.J. v. B.C.' This must be Aarnoud Jan van Beeck Calkoen 1805-1874 born in Leiden. He went to Utrecht to study law. There he settled as a lawyer and grew into politics. The text on the upper half of the pages is accompanied with the commentary and the annotations of various specialists on the lower half These are taken or excerpted from earlier useful normative or renewing editions. Editions like this one 'cum notis Variorum' were useful but never broke new ground. The production of these sometimes overloaded vehicles of knowledge was the specialty of Dutch scholars of the 17th and 18th century. The compilers seldom were great scholars but often hard working schoolmasters. Yet Snakenburg did also some research. In a long and well-wrought introduction Snakenburg elaborates on the books he used and the scholars who helped him. He seems to have digested anything worth knowing about Curtius Rufus. He also asked permission from the University Library of Leiden to consult a 'codex antiquissimus'. He further inspected 2 other manuscripts one 'minime negligendus' and the third of a more recent date both 'codices Vossiani'. He collected readings emendations and collations from all normative sources but also e.g. annotations which he found in the margins of a book once owned by the Dutch scholar Nicolaas Heinsius 1620-1681. § Quintus Curtius Rufus probably first cent. A.D. is the author of the only surviving monography on Alexander the Great in Latin. This work consisting of 10 books did not survive in its entirety the first 2 books are lost. The text of Curtius Rufus is preceded in this edition by a rather peculiar philological accomplishment by Freinsheim. He endeavoured to repair the loss of the 2 lost books by a composition of his own a feat which was much admired by his contemporaries. He had published this addition earlier in his edition of 1640. The only thing Hendrik Snakenburg 1674-1750 ever did for scholarship is this Variorum edition. The praise and success which he earned with this one edition makes it likely that he was a good critic with a sound judgement. Snakenburg spent his life teaching classics at the 'Schola Latina' of Leiden. In 1740 he was appointed Rector. In Leiden he was befriended with the classical scholar J. Gronovius and one of the publishers of this book Samuel Luchtmans. His portrait painted by J. Houbraken in 1715 is in the possession of the 'Lakenhal' in Leiden. He was an active fascist ca. 1933 party offical of the 'Nationale Unie' and in 1934 leader of the 'Algemeene Nederlandsche Fascisten Bond'. During WW II he sided with the German oppressor. Commission from Adjutant General Thomas H. Cushing for Doctor Alexander Blair as Surgeon's Mate with Pennsylvania's 5th Regiment of Infantry
1812. Good . 1 leaf folded into 4 pages with handwritten signed letter on one page dated 23 Dec. 1812 Washington City. In response to a letter from Doctor Alexander Blair in Buffalo N.Y. Cushing enclosed his commission as surgeon's mate with Pennsylvania's 5th Regiment of Infantry. The commission is not present. Thomas Humphrey Cushing 1755-1822 fought during the American Revolution; he was adjutant and inspector general of the Army in 1797 1798 and from 1800 to 1807. In 1811 he was arrested and court martialed on charges of disobedience and misuse of government funds; a year later he was acquitted on most of the charges and received an official reprimand. Two months later on July 2 1812 he was promoted to brigadier general. He served as adjutant general of the Army from July 6 1812 to March 12 1813. After that he was made commander of Military District No. 1; after the war he retired from the Army and was soon appointed collector of cusoms for the port of New London Conn. Alexander Blair 1789-1830 had just completed his medical studies and opened an office and drug store in Washington Pa. in the spring of 1812; after war was declared in June 1812 he applied for a commission as a surgeon's mate which he recieved. He was promoted to surgeon in March 1814; after the war ended in 1815 he returned to Washington Pa. In Good Condition: creased; paper is browned and slightly discolored; starting to separate along folds; chip out of one side without loss of text. unknown

1938 - 1939 ORIGINAL PRE WORLD WAR II MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL OF 3 CUSTOMS OFFICERS SEIZING GOODS AND ARRESTING SMUGGLERS IN THE PORT OF NEW YORK
NEW YORK CITY NEW YORK. Fair. 1938. On offer is an original 1938 - 1939 manuscript relic of pre World War II policing by three US Customs and Duty officers named Barlow Day and Hagner. The entries list seizures they made the date the name of the ship which pier the items seized and the value of these items. Historians and researchers of such work will be amazed at the breadth of the seized items beyond the assumed liquor tobacco and weapons. The notes detail such sundry items pyjamas perfume sandals table cloths lotion wallets shell boxes cameras tea jewellery coins and more. Included within the pages of the journal are several newspaper clippings. Four of them were obits for a man by the name of Sgt. John E. Day who died during WWII. He was the brother of custom's agent Edward F. Day. There are also a few articles about a narcotics bust mostly opium showing a woman by the name of Madeline Mayling as the suspect. In part: "June 9th 1939. United States Customs agents were set last night to crack down on a huge Broadway drug syndicate as a result of the arrest of a woman head of a gown shop and the seizure of more than $15000 worth of crude gum opium and morphine base on her person. The woman under arrest is Madeline Mayling 38 who operated the Helene Modes Inc. on the 6th floor of the Gayety Gaiety Theatre Building 1547 Broadway
She was captured as she walked off the Italian liner Vulcania last Friday night with 12 1/2 pound slabs of opium under her girdle. "I thought it was imported Roquefort or limburger cheese" she insisted. She is held in default of $25000 bail charged with smuggling. An alleged accomplice whose name is withheld also is under arrest
.Other narcotics were found at her home and at her place of business a Broadway dress shop
.In her apartment a fully loaded automatic pistol was also found
" Another article notes that a woman was hiding four pounds of pure heroin in the soles of her shoes; several pairs. The handwritten entry in the journal that shows where they arrested Madeline but she was going under the alias name of "Helen Hoffman" as the newspaper article states. There is also a small typed piece of paper which is titled "Enforcement Division Notes." This piece talks about Guard E. F. Day who was "strolling" on board the S. S. Pacific which was docked in Brooklyn at the time. He decided to search the seamen's wash room and found a bottle that ordinarily contained pickles when actually it was "Preserved Marijuana." It was concealed under the iron floor of the wash room. This is really a fascinating 37 pages of intimate details of the unique service these officers performed. There are about 40 different ships mentioned including: the Normandie California Virginia Ile de France New York Champlain Rotterdam Berlin Queen Mary Breman and many more. Some of the piers are; Constable Hook in Bayonne New Jersey Claremont Terminal in New Jersey New Briton Boat Landing in Staten Island Pier 18 North River Brooklyn piers and more. Finally in the back of this journal is two page handwritten entry about a Grand Jury session concerning the seizure of opium on board the ship SS Menclaus. Seems they found opium in the bottom of a bucket hidden under some clothing and belonging to Lee Foo Yung. The diary it's in poor shape with the cover detached but present and the cover is also torn at the spine in places. There are a few torn out pages but the diary itself has over 100 pages of which 37 have entries. Binding still looks good and there is a bit of foxing around the edges of the pages. The journal measures about 4 ¾" x 6 ¾". Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Near fine. In response to a request for an original working draft page of a manuscript Cutting cordially replies: "Will the enclosed serve your purpose It is rather more legible than most!" Signed boldly in full. Second an AMS 1p 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. Very good. Mild edge wear and a bit of age toning. On cheap lined paper Cutting has hurriedly penned in black ink some lines from a story complete with a few crossouts and additions. Along the top she has added "From / Fairy Godmother / story finished March 1920. Published in Woman's Home Companion" and at the bottom she signs in full. If this example is as Cutting notes "rather more legible than most" we would hate to see one of her less legible pages! Nice example of a working draft from a popular ladies author of the turn of the century. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

Addressed to George May Powell. Very good. Powell a photographer had sent Cuyler a print of a large photo montage he was marketing "Being a group of Portraits of all those members of Congress who voted for the AMENDMENT of the CONSTITUTION PROHIBITING SLAVERY with those of President LINCOLN and Vice-President HAMLIN added." Cuyler's response is the "blurb" Powell had requested for use in a leaflet he was preparing advertising this photograph: "The likenesses are excellent; the idea is happy -- and the engraving ought to be on every loyal citizens' wall. 'Honor to whom honor is due'. And on that roll who deserve better from a grateful country than the Congress which put slavery into its charnel-house. Red morocco shield on the back. Gryphius' woodcut printer's mark on the title depicting a griffin which mythological animal symbolizes courage diligence watchfulness and rapidity of execution used as a pun of his family name Gryph or Greif. From the claws of this creature hangs a big rectangular stone beneath which is a winged orb. The motto is 'Virtute duce / comite fortuna' 'Virtue thy leader fortune thy comrade' a quote from a letter of Cicero to Plancus Epistulae ad Familiares liber X3. On the last page of the second volume a woodcut griffin. The text is printed completely in italics. Woodcut initials. This edition seems to be rare. Condition: Back damaged. Head & tail of the spine gone. Joints split. Boards restored first with cloth and in the beginning of the 20th century with paper. Title almost loose soiled & partly waterstained and with 2 stamps and a lengthwise tear of 8 cm which has been repaired provisionally. Right upper corner of first gathering slightly waterstained. Text of page 3 partly worn away. Occasionally old ink underlinings and small marginalia in the first volume. Lower margin of the last gatherings faintly waterstained Note: This Lyonaise edition of 1550 is a reissue cheaper and in a handier octavo format of the first complete edition in folio format of the works of the Church Father Cyprianus by the great Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus which appeared in Basel in 1520. § Cyprianus born ca. A.D. 200 was consecrated bishop of Carthago in 248. His letters and tracts deal mainly with difficulties within the Christian community resulting from the persecution by the Roman authorities. Cyprianus insisted upon repentance of those Christians the socalled 'lapsi' who had temporarily given up their creed and taken part in heathen practices under pressure of the State. Cyprianus did not want to receive the lapsi back into the church that easy and the result was turmoil in the Christian community and schism. Cyprianus died a martyr in 258 because he refused to make offerings to the pagan gods of Rome. His deacon Pontius wrote hereafter a short Vita Cypriani the earliest Christian biography. The life also called Passio Cypriani has an apologetic character. It treats the controversies around Cyprian's election to bishop and his decision to go into hiding during the persecution of A.D. 250. The language of Cyprianus' letters and tracts finds many analogies in Roman law. 'His application of juridical categories to the conception of the church permanently influences Western catholicism'. OCD 2nd ed. p.305. Cyprianus' most influential work is his De unitate ecclesiae about the unity of the church. In letter 73 caput 21 his opinion is best summarized in 'salus extra ecclesiam non est' a statement that until this day is a source of controversy. § Erasmus praises Cyprianus for his earnestness the absence of striving for effect and the popularity among his flock. This bishop had not lost touch with his flock as had the scholastic theologians of Erasmus' own day who were alienated from the common believers. The theologians of that time spoke a kind of secret language that no one understood and they discussed subjects in which no one was interested whereas Cyprianus lived for the poor. Erasmus praises in the Dedicatio the eloquence and the pastoris dignitatem of the bishop. § Erasmus opposed the literalists of his time who made issues and controversies of everything and he looked to the Church Fathers to reunite culture and theology. He strove to go back to the sources of true theology and his aim was to understand the Church Fathers who were in his opinion still the best exegetes of the Scriptures. Therefore it was necessary he thought that every educated person could read them in the original Greek or Latin or in translation. Therefore Erasmus moved mountains to publish and translate a host of Church Fathers. From 1516 onward there appeared from his hand editions of Hieronymus Cyprianus Arnobius Hilarius Ambrosius and Augustinus. He translated from Greek into Latin works of Origenes Chrysostomus and Irenaeus. Criticism of later editors is not always justified. Graesse summarizes the criticism concerning Erasmus' Cyprianus thus: 'L'éd. donnée par Érasme laisse beaucoup a desirer.' We have to bear in mind that it was extremely difficult in Erasmus' time to find and collate manuscripts. Nor did he aim at precision work or philological niceties but he strove to offer his public clean texts which they could read themselves. The text he offers is more complete and 'emendatior multo sublatis opera nostra mendis' Erasmus proudly says than previous editions. Dedication letter p. aa4 verso He removed tracts which were falsely attributed to Cyprianus and added three tracts three letters and two orations he had found and which had not been published before. Cyprianus' text in this 1550 edition is preceded by 15 pages with notes of Erasmus 6 pages of indices and a summary of the biography of Pontius. In the margins are repeated Erasmus' very short notes which also appeared in the 1520 edition Provenance: On the front pastedown: 'Beijers 20/IV/73 110- kosten 13191'. The handwriting is of G.F. Diercks the wellknown Dutch patrologist who produced for Brepols editions of Novatianus Cyprianus and Luciferus Calaritanus in the prestigious Series CCSL. § Beijers was a famous auction house in Utrecht. CAMDEN NEW JERSEY. Fair. 1920. On offer is a super original circa 1920 manuscript book drawn and handwritten by of Camden New Jersey. He was a machinist who worked on ships and then later a printer. Likely this book was created while he worked at a shipping yard in or near Camden. The coverless book has about 112 pages all having to do with ships and their inner and outer workings and some other maritime items. There are handwritten notes adding breadth to the drawings.
