This publication includes a history of the 108th Field Artillery from its founding in 1840 as the National Guards of Philadelphia through its service in the First World War up to 1940. At Rutgers Griffis Was An English And Latin Language Tutor For Taro Kusakabe A Young Samurai From The Province Of Echizen Part Of Modern Fukui. After A Year Of Travel In Europe He Studied At The Seminary Of The Reformed Church In America In New Brunswick Known Today As The New Brunswick Theological Seminary. In September 1870 Griffis Was Invited To Japan By Matsudaira Shungaku For The Purpose Of Organizing Schools Along Modern Lines. In 1871 He Was Superintendent Of Education In The Province Of Echizen. In Recompense He Was Provided With A Salary Of $2400 A House In Fukui And A Horse. In 1872-74 Griffis Taught Chemistry1 And Physics At Kaisei Gakko The Forerunner Of Tokyo Imperial University. He Prepared The New Japan Series Of Reading And Spelling Books 5 Vols. 1872. He Also Published Primers For Japanese Students Of The English Language; And He And Contributed To The Japanese Press And To Newspapers And Magazines In The United States Numerous Papers Of Importance On Japanese Affairs. Griffis Was Joined By His Sister Margaret Clark Griffis Who Became A Teacher At The Tokyo Government Girls' School Later To Become The Peeresses' School. By The Time They Left Japan In 1874 Griffis Had Befriended Many Of Japan's Future Leaders. Griffis Was A Member Of The Asiatic Society Of Japan The Asiatic Society Of Korea The Historical Society Of The Imperial University Of Tokyo And The Meirokusha. Returning To The United States Griffis Attended Union Theological Seminary; And After Finishing His Studies In 1877 He Was Called To The Ministry In A Series Of Churches-At The First Reformed Church Schenectady New York 1877-1886; At The Shawmut Congregational Church Boston Massachusetts 1886-1893; And At The First Congregational Church Ithaca New York 1893-1903. Concurrently At Union College In 1884 He Earned A Higher Degree Doctor Of Divinity D.D. Rutgers Awarded Him An Honorary Degree Doctor Of Humane Letters L.H.D. In 1899. In 1903 He Resigned From The Active Ministry To Devote Himself Exclusively To Writing And Lecturing. His Books On Japan And Japanese Culture Were Complemented With Extensive College And University Lecture Circuit Itineraries. In Addition To His Own Books And Articles During This Period He Also Joined Inazo Nitobe In Crafting What Became His Most Well-Known Book Bushido: The Soul Of Japan. In 1907 The Japanese Government Conferred The Order Of The Rising Sun Gold Rays With Rosette Which Represents The Fourth Highest Of Eight Classes Associated With The Award. In 1926 Griffis Was Invited To Return To Japan; And On This Trip The Japanese Government Conferred A Second Decoration. He Was Presented With The Order Of The Rising Sun Gold Rays With Neck Ribbon Which Represents The Third Highest Of Eight Classes. A Private Rail Car Was Provided By The Japanese Government And He Visited Several Cities In The Course Of This Return Trip. Griffis Was A Founding Member Of The National Institute Of Arts And Letters Later To Become The American Academy Of Arts And Letters The American Historical Association And The U.S. Naval Institute. One Of Griffis' Two Sons Stanton Griffis Would Become U.S. Ambassador To Poland Egypt Spain And Argentina Under President Truman. Stanton Griffis Was Ambassador To Argentina While Juan And Eva Peron Were In Power And Wrote Of His Experiences In A Book Titled Lying In State. He Was Raised In A Cultured Family And Both He And His Brother Armand Harrold Conway Became Recognized Artists. At Age 17 Conway Went To New York City And Became A Student Of William Merritt Chase And Wayne Gifford And Then For Several Years He Taught A Special Method Of China Painting On The Faculty At The Cincinnati School Of Design. However Problems With His Health Took Him West In The 1890S. In Denver Where He Lived On A Cattle Ranch He Studied Landscape Painting And Also Made Trips To Mexico And California In 1898 Moving To Southern California Permanently In 1904. He First Lived On Catalina Island Later Moving To Laguna Beach Where He Was A Member Of The Laguna Beach Art Association. Exhibition At The Steckel Gallery In 1912. Peter tends to write front to back and then change back to front in these 'pocketbook' type journal. Peter meanders making observations jotting memories detailing genealogical histories; Mrs. Mary Bevins his sister some famed people he knew through his father and notes the history of the family's steel works is in the snippets to follow. "July 10th 1883. My duties have been arduous have neglected to keep up any diary regularly. I went to Arkansas - last May was a year - via Baltimore Harrisburg Pittsburg Chicago St. Louis by RRs and by Steamer too Memphis by RR to Little Rock Geary Ark. to my sister Mrs. Mary Blevins near Pangburn White Co. Clark.knows of it." July 29th 1883 Alexandria Va. This ancient city is still inhabited by many of the old Virginia Aristocracy who own the best of the property. The city was mostly of the tory sort I believe in the days of Washington - who attended Church here in the same building I did today.That it sympathised with England and the King may be inferred from the names of the streets - King St. Queen St. Prince.It was also a strong rebel city during the late war sending about a thousand soldiers into the rebel army under Genl R.E. Lee who lived a few miles above opposite the city of Washington. The pocketbook has a page or two missing one hinge is loose is written in pencil blue crayon and pen. A number of pages are financial - stock holdings monies loaned and repaid. Some more legible than others especially the log parts where he has crossed out information that was no longer relelvant. 50pp. Diary for 1881 also a pocketbook style tells the long tale of the death of Catherine M. Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan 1857. Prose Writers of America was first published in 1847 this is the 4th and last edition. And was specifically designed to compete with a similar anthology by Cornelius Mathews and Evert Augustus Duyckinck. Editor/author Rufus Wilmot Griswold was an influential editor but less than civil and scrupulous he outed Walt Whitman although apparently it took one to know one and is perhaps best remembered today for defaming Egdar Allan Poe even becoming Poe's literary executor under less than ethical circumstances. This volume was one of his last works a piece of somewhat controversial literary history. Green cloth with decorative gilt on front and back covers and spine. Bevelled edges. Soil to covers; chipping and wear to head and heel of spine wear to corners edgewear. Interesting cover with a cameo-like circular cut out both front and back covers with gilt floral inet. Pencilled price on fep. Frontispiece of Washington Irving. Some foxing to frontispiece title pages about the first few pages of the book and the last several. 552 toned pages with double borders. We noted two previously folded page corners a pencilled x on the margin of the first contents page and a wrinkle on contents page. Sewn binding with slightly weak endpapers. Gilt stain all around is a bit dull. The type size for this volume is on the small size about 8 points is our guess. In very good condition. Born in Vermont American anthologist Rufus Wilmot Griswold remains best known for his 1842 collection The Poets and Poetry of America. This anthology the most comprehensive of its time included what he deemed the best examples of American poetry. Edgar Allan Poe whose poetry had been included in Griswold's anthology published a critical response that questioned which poets were included. This began a rivalry which grew when Griswold succeeded Poe as editor of Graham's Magazine at a salary higher than Poe's. Later the two competed for the attention of poet Frances Sargent Osgood. They never reconciled their differences and after Poe's mysterious death in 1849 Griswold wrote an unsympathetic obituary. He was influenced by Vossius Grotius Heinsius and Scriverius. His editions mark an epoch in the study of Livy of Seneca Tacitus & Gellius. His interest in textual criticism of Latin poetry was due to the discovery of the Florentine MS of the tragedies of Seneca. In his riper years 'the acumen exhibited in his handling of prose is also exemplified in his treatment of the text of poets such as Phaedrus and Martial Seneca and Statius'. Little is known of the rest of Lindenbrog's life. From 1610 onward till his death he was the librarian of Duke Johann Adolf von Holstein who had assembled in Gottorp a great collection of books. He made his name as a philologist with this Censorinus edition. ADB 18693 Ad 3: Having studied at several universities and travelled in England Holland France and Italy Johannes Fredericus Gronovius came in 1642 to the Dutch city Deventer where he was appointed professor of rhetoric and history at the local Athenaeum Illustre. He didnot regret this modest step for he married there the 22 years old Aleida Ten Nuyl with whom he had a happy marriage and had seven children. In 1658 he left for Leiden. In 1643 he had published in Deventer his De sestertiis commentarius. Gronovius had more interests than editing commenting and textual criticism. During his academic career he published also important works on numismatics and on money in the ancient world. In 1643 he published this De sestertiis commentarius. This small work later grew into Gronovius' famous De Sestertiis seu subsecivorum pecuniae veteris Graecae & Romanae libri IV which was first published in 1656. Gronovius is considered to be 'einer der Wegbereiter der Forschungen über das antike Münzwesen'. NDB 7127 Provenance: Stamp: 'Dr. A. Hinsbergs Bibliothek Hinsberg'. In ink has been added in the stamp: 'Adolf' and 'No. 7724'. Dr. jur. Adolf Hinsberg 1868-1933 lived at Unt. Lichtenplatzerstrasse 108 in Barmen and was 'Rechtsanwalt' and 'Justizrat'. He must also have been a bibliophile considering the number in the stamp.
