The second volume contains the fifth and sixth parts in first edition Aux États Calotins 1754 from the Calotine printing house. These Memoirs were published several times until 1754. This edition was published somewhere in Holland. The two volumes do not contain the fourth part as it did not appear separately but was integrated into the 1735 edition. Contemporary full blonde calf bindings. Smooth spines beautifully ornamented decorative rolls at head and foot. Red morocco title-label and beige morocco volume labels. Minor rubbing to headcaps and corners. One corner slightly bumped. Handsome copy. The other name of the Calotte regiment was that of the Confraternity of Fools a secret literary society originally military in nature which was formed under Louis XIV its principal collaborators in war against the corruption of morals and the French Academy were Abbé Guyot-Desfontaine Piron Grécourt Plantavit de la Pause Gacon Abbé Macon etc. The best definition that can be found is given by Picart in his work: Religious ceremonies and customs of all the peoples of the world; here is what he says about it: « The Calotte regiment owes its birth to some fine minds of the Court who formed a society some years ago. They proposed to correct morals to reform the fashionable style by turning it to ridicule and to erect a tribunal opposed to that of the French Academy. The members of this new company having foreseen that they would not fail to be accused of frivolity on the difficulty of their undertaking judged it appropriate to take a lead cap and the name of Calotte Regiment. Here was the occasion: towards the end of Louis XIV's reign M. de Torsac exempt of the bodyguards M. Aymon the king's valet and various other officers having one day made a thousand jokes about a headache from which one of them suffered extremely proposed a lead cap to the patient. The conversation having heated up they took it upon themselves to create a regiment composed solely of persons distinguished by the extravagance of their speeches or their actions. They named it the Calotte regiment in favor of the lead cap; and by unanimous consent sieur Aymon was immediately elected general . ‎Very Good French Original decorated map. Hand-coloured. Oblong elephant folio. (54 x 76 cm). In French. Shows Greece, Archipelago, Isle de Candie, Asia Minor (Western side), and East Mediterranean. Delisle od de l'Isle was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas. At 27, Delisle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of "Géographe de l'Académie". Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l'Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. Delisle's progress culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. He was appointed to teach geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV's son, a task for which he received a salary. Again, his father's reputation as a man of science probably helped the younger Delisle. Historian Mary Sponberg Pedley says, 'once authority was established, a geographer's name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers'. Delisle's case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father's. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire's claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas. Like many cartographers of his day, Delisle did not travel with the explorers. He drew maps mostly in his office, relying on a variety of data. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network to provide him first-hand information. Given his family's and his own reputation, Delisle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were returning from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he also kept current with recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of a source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered. Printed on deluxe laid paper. The engravings are by David after drawings by Lejeune. The prints are particularly well-inked and of a superb deep red they are the first proofs in France of English blood bistre. The last volume is dated 1796 the fourth 1791. Volume IV uses a superior slightly bluish finer paper as does volume II for its half-title and title. Publisher's binding in full mottled and glazed blonde calf spine with raised bands beautifully decorated with four compartmentalized fleurons red morocco title labels and green morocco volume labels triple fillet frame on boards roulette on cuts and interior edges gilt with superior gold. Head of volume I split upper joint of volume I cracked at head and foot and one corner bumped. A lack at head of volume II and two corners slightly bumped. A lack at head of volume III. Corners rubbed. Head of volume IV split upper joint narrowly cracked at foot lower joint cracked at head and three corners bumped. Head of volume V split foot worn upper and lower joints cracked at head and foot two corners bumped. Despite the flaws handsome set in quality binding with superb mottling on the boards. This luxury publishing venture entirely directed by François-Anne David was done by subscription and was only printed in 450 copies. This is the very example of the art book the illustration being on equal footing with the text. The work appeared in a luxurious version in quarto and in this octavo version. The illustration includes a portrait of Raynal by Cochin with the inscription: Le défenseur de la liberté de la vérité. as frontispiece to volume I and 9 fine figures as frontispieces to the other volumes by Moreau le Jeune and engraved by De Launay Delignon and Simonet. The quarto atlas was published separately and could be joined to the edition according to the purchaser's wishes. The volumes are complete with all half-titles and the 10 errata leaves at the end. Contemporary full green morocco binding. Decorated smooth spine. Red morocco title and volume labels. Triple gilt ruling on boards. Spines uniformly faded. Traces of rubbing. Superb copy very rare in green morocco. Edmond and Jules de Goncourt bookplate designed and engraved by Gavarni. Edmond de Goncourt's signature above the bookplate. It should be noted that fine 18th-century books are rare in the Goncourt library. First published in 1771 in 7 volumes with the collaboration of D'Holbach and Diderot the Histoire philosophique des deux Indes achieved lightning success throughout Europe and America; its success was essentially due to its severe criticism of colonialism exploitation slavery and mercantilism. It was condemned to be suppressed by decree of the Council of 19 December 1779 and condemned to the fire by decree of the Parliament of Paris of 25 May 1781. An emblematic book of the Age of Enlightenment presenting itself as a history of international commerce the work is above all a violent pamphlet against European colonialism and its arrogance slavery and the subjugation of peoples against the church which lends its support to European hypocrisy. The result was not long in coming and the book was burned in a public square in Paris. We know today that Diderot collaborated from the first edition and that he supervised the organization of the texts which he would perfect in the third edition by adding numerous texts from his pen and those of other collaborators such as D'Holbach transforming the initial work into a true war machine of the philosophers' party. The book is by no means only accusations on the contrary it seeks and even implores peaceful solutions understandings between peoples. History was not mistaken since it saw in Raynal a promoter of the French Revolution. The prince who has been raised on reading novels since his youngest age is in search of this utopian country which he finally discovers underground. All the things described trees rocks are contaminated by what is found in novels thus the rocks are tender having listened to so many complaints from heroes. The marvelous journey is in fact a critique of very fine intelligence on the novelistic writing of the 17th century for the author never undertakes a fundamental critique he has written a travel novel about the country of novels which reveals its ridiculous aspects and excesses and it is true that a certain novelistic production of the 17th century often proves the author right with its cohort of shepherds ancient heroes and fairies.
