The author methodically proposes the analysis and examination of the theses and ideas developed by d'Holbach. He establishes a parallel with the system of the Economists Materialists and Rousseau. The relative impartiality of the author illuminates in an unexpected way the theses of the materialists and d'Holbach. Large rubbing to upper board of volumes I and II less pronounced on volume V. Loss to upper joint at head of volume III on upper board and along lower joint. Losses at tail of volume 7. Internally fresh but 3 title pages with brown stain to margin. Good copy. Important biography by the philologist Thiebault de Lavaux accompanied by anecdotes and supporting documents. The publisher would be forced to withdraw the announcement of these works and thus to reprint the title page of Méhée de la Touche. Original pamphlet in gray paper wrappers. Unlettered spine. Lack at head and upper joint open for 5 cm. Corners and edges folded. Tear with small damage to text on leaf N1. Uncut copy with conjugate leaves except the first 15 pages. Méhée de la Touche 1760-1826 spy in the service of Bonaparte mounted in 1803 an infiltration operation of the royalists in exile in London in order to thwart a conspiracy against the First Consul. He passed himself off as a counter-revolutionary pursued by the French police and mystified one of the best English agents of the time Francis Drake diplomat in Munich and supporter of the royalists. England of course ignoring his true intentions provided Méhée with a sum of 192000 pounds for his contribution to the overthrow of Bonaparte. These memoirs to say the least curious constitute a fascinating spy novel ""fort piquant"" ""quite spicy"" Biography of Contemporaries Paris 1824 p. 167 the author recounting in detail how he introduced himself into official circles from Berlin to Hamburg passing through Strasbourg: ""Il me semble explique-t-il que mon aventure offre des leçons qui peuvent n'être perdues. On y voit à nu les ressorts méprisables de cette politique qui semble se nourrir des larmes et du sang dont elle inonde le globe depuis que nos voisins l'ont adoptée. . La voix de la justice ne peut manquer de se faire entendre plutôt ou plus tard en faveur de l'homme dont les circonstances seules aient pu rendre les opinions dangereuses ; mais l'infamie pire que l'échafaud menace quiconque ose méconnaître la loi sacrée qui attache l'homme au sol qui l'a nourri."" ""It seems to me he explains that my adventure offers lessons that may not be lost. One sees there naked the despicable mechanisms of this politics which seems to feed on the tears and blood with which it floods the globe since our neighbors adopted it. . ""The Duke of Berry is a young man with a rather unpleasant appearance: he is hardly loved except by those who served in the corps he commanded during the war. He detests the Bishop of Arras and reproached him in the presence of several people for never having given anything but bad advice to his father."" Decorative gilt board-edges and roll on leading edges. 18th-century endpapers preserved. The lower margin of the title page missing the owner's name was removed has been filled with modern paper. A hole in the lower right margin on pp. 301 and 302. An amusing old annotation probably from the 18th century in ink in the lower margin of the publisher's warning: ""foutu sot"". Collection of satirical and erotic poetry attributed to a certain Busca some pieces are by him who according to Barbier Dict. des ouvrages anonymes is the future general Pommereul in Bonaparte's service. Many of the poems are signed Boufflers Voltaire. The work is divided into three parts as announced in the title. It includes several songs. Note that the theological tales are so called only because they feature monks and other church characters. The Catholic litanies are more than irreverent songs litanies of saint geneviève. that treat the church saints with extreme levity. Corners slightly bumped. Upper joint of volume I cracked lower joint of volume I cracked at foot. Lower joint of volume IV split at head over the first 3 compartments; upper joint cracked at head. Treatise and manual of chemistry according to the German theories of Becker and Stahl. Becker originated the phlogiston theory which held that a principle of combustion was present and active in air a theory that would be disproved by Lavoisier's experiments on combustion. This phlogiston theory was perfected by Stahl. Demachy devoted his life to spreading German chemistry and successfully translated various treatises. Demonstrator of natural history at the College of Chemistry founded by Louis XVI Demachy held this position from 1777 to 1801 and faithful to German theories refused the evolution of chemistry introduced by Lavoisier and others.
