The quarrel over military and commercial nobility was originally launched by the work of Abbé Coyer who urged the nobility to engage in commerce this first book was followed by responses objections and pamphlets throughout the year 1756. Our copy brings together three essays relating to this polemic. We know that the nobility being primitively military commerce was long considered the work of the lower classes. Abbé Coyer's work had the effect of a bombshell the contrary argument of a nobility of the sword was defended by the Chevalier d'Arq. The first two essays attempt to find a reasonable solution to this dilemma by examining the principles and theses of the two opposing ideas. The last essay is an essay in satirical tone on the praise of idleness thus running counter to all the polemic on the functions of the nobility. Chez Duchesne hardcover

It is upon this edition that the famous Geneva edition revised by Rousseau in 1782 will be established also in quarto format and which will borrow from this 1774 edition the plates by Moreau Le Jeune. A portrait of Rousseau in a medallion at the frontispiece of volume I by Quentin de La Tour and engraved by Saint-Aubin. The plates by Moreau le Jeune were engraved by Nicolas Le Mire Duclos Simonet. Some plates bear the date 1777 and 1778. 12 title vignettes by Choffart. 2 plates are missing from the miscellaneous works. The collective title appears only on the half-title each volume has its particular title and each set has specific volume numbering. Later binding ca 1840 in half blonde sheep. Smooth spine decorated with long rococo tooling. Titles and volume numbers gilt. Paper yellowed or browned throughout except for the plates except for volumes 10 11 and 12. Scattered foxing in volume I. Volume I: Upper joint cracked at head and foot: tail headcap worn a lack at head. Volume II: Upper joint cracked at head and foot. Nibbling on upper board. It is this octavo edition which served for distributions and gifts made by Rousseau and Mme de Luxembourg."" It contains several corrected passages. According to Mc Eachern ""Bibliography of the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau to 1800"" it could not have been printed before 1764 despite the date of 1762 on the title. It is distinguished from the first edition by the difference in the fleurons on the title page the characters used which are different and some minor details: some of the errors listed in the errata of the first edition have been corrected. This edition does not contain a half-title in volume I conforming to the duodecimo edition. Title pages in red and black. Contemporary full marbled brown calf binding. Decorated smooth spine. Red morocco title labels works of Rousseau and second title and volume labels in brown morocco. Triple fillet frame on the boards with presence of some scuffing. Headcaps of volumes I and IV worn down headcap of volume II partly lacking. Lacking at tail of volume II. A lack along the joint of volume I upper joint of volume II split at tail 2 small lacks along the lower joint of volume III lower joint of volume IV open at head with lacks narrow split to upper joint at head. Upper corners of volumes I and II bumped. Trace of pale dampstain on the frontispiece of volume II especially present on the spine. Volume II from the first leaf to p. 18 trace of pale yellow dampstain at upper right corner. In volume IV a black ink stain on the fore edge showing a visible black line fading to page 35. Otherwise fresh throughout. The first collected edition was published in 1764 and everything suggests that this copy which bears on its title labels: Works of Rousseau was bound to form a set with this edition. The publisher Duchesne took the liberty of changing the original division of the letters Volume 1: 65 letters volume 2: 48 letters volume 3: 26 letters and volume 4: 24 letters. Title pages in red and black. It is illustrated with a frontispiece by Cochin and twelve fine hors-texte plates engraved by Le Mire with borders by Gravelot. These figures are the same as those of the original edition except the twelfth. In reality this is the first illustrated edition containing these figures because the original edition was published initially without figures a collection of prints being published separately. This edition contains the two prefaces notably the famous second dialogue. There exist two Duchesne editions dated 1764 one octavo more carefully produced and the other duodecimo with substantially different typographical material; thus if the title pages appear similar at first glance they are in fact different the first line is bolder the second line in red is solid and its letters are not composed like the octavo of small circles. Contemporary full brown marbled calf bindings smooth spines decorated with havana and pale green morocco title and volume labels triple gilt rules framing the boards gilt fillets on edges and headcaps marbled endpapers and pastedowns all edges red. Volume I: Headcap partially lacking upper joint cracked at head one lack at tail 4 corners bumped. Volume III: lacks at head and tail 3 corners bumped and lacks at lower edges on upper board. Volume IV: Lacks at tail and head micro crack to upper joint at head 2 tears along lower joint. Set rather fresh one dampstain in margin of frontispiece of volume III some leaves more yellowed. This great sentimental novel enjoyed very lively success from its publication 4000 copies of the original edition were printed and the work had no fewer than 70 editions between 1761 and 1800. Demand became so strong that publishers began renting volumes by the day and even by the hour. The work was placed on the Index in 1806 for offense to church values. The Duchesne edition seems to have had a print run of 750 copies. Chez Duchesne hardcover
