Blanche Henrey 883 mentioning that not all copies of this edition have the two plates and ours does not. In effect the third edition though the preceeding two have the title "The Scots Gardiners Director". Sir James Justice 1698 - 1763 was a Scottish horticulturalist/gardener. His works on gardening were distributed in much of Britain and Ireland. He reportedly had a passion for botanical experiments which he pursued at the expense of his finances and family. Indeed the later miniaturist John Kay wrote that tulipomania was the cause of him parting with his estate at Crichton and the purchase of a smaller one. His divorce and expulsion from the Fellowship in the Royal Society has been blamed on the expenses he put into greenhouses and soil mixtures. There is no motto. This variant of Cratander's printer's mark is not mentioned by A. Wolkenhauer 'Zu schwer für Apoll die Antike in humanistischen Druckerzeichen des 16. Occasional old ink notes and underlinings; right margin cut rather short Note: This is an epitome made by one Justinus probably in the third century A.D. of the 'Historiae Philippicae' of the Augustan historian of Gaulish descent Pompeius Trogus who got his nomen because his grandfather was given Roman citizenship by Pompeius after his campaign against Sertorius in Spain. Important parts of his 'Historiae' which numbered 44 books only survive in this epitome of Justin in which it was boiled down it is estimated to 1/10th or 1/6th. Neue Pauly 10 p. 115 Trogus produced a universal history of the peoples outside Italy. He seems to have used no other sources than Greek historians and his story runs from Ninus king of Assyria to the absorbtion of the other nations into the Roman empire and the establishment of the 'Pax Augusta'. Books 7/12 describe the rise of Philip II and of Macedon. Books 13/40 treat the Hellenistic kingdoms. 42/42 contain the history of Parthia 43 of Italy and 44 the history of Spain. Inserted are many historical and geographical excursus for example on the history of Armenia or the Jewish wars. The leading concept of Trogus' history was the so-called 'translatio imperii' which conceived history as a linear succession of empires under a singular ruler or emperor. The narrative is elaborate dramatic and moralizing. Trogus was according to Rose an very passable stylist who arranged his second hand material intelligently and showed 'some original views how to write history. . Even in this diminished condition the epitome the history is interesting reading often containing facts not to be met with elsewhere and one of our much too scanty sources for the history of the eastern Mediterranean and the adjacent countries'. Rose 'A Handbook of Latin literature' 'London 1967 p. 312/13 The epitome of Justin was widely read in the Middle Ages because it seemed to legitimize the 'translatio imperii' to the Pope but also the emergence of the Holy Roman Empire as legitimate continuation of the Roman Empire. See for 'translatio imperii' English Wikipedia After the Historiae Philippicae has been added the 'Vitae Caesarum' of the late antique Roman historian Aurelius Victor biographies of Roman emperors from Augustus to Constantius 360 A.D. It treats biographical material in a moralizing fashion and is based for the first emperors on Suetonius. § The German jurist Johannes Sichard 1499-1552 was from 1535 till his death professor of Roman Law at the University of Tübingen. This representative of humanistic jurisprudence published on the Codex Iustinianus but also some important legal texts of Germanic peoples especially the 'Breviary of Alaric' Breviarium Alaricianum 1528 laws of the Ripuarian Franks Alemanns and Bavarians 1530. He was also a legal counselor in lawsuits for the Dukes of Württemberg in their legal controversies with Ferdinand king of the Holy Roman empire. This Justinus seems to have been his only edition of a Roman author. ADB 34 143/46 It was reissued by Cratander in 1530 Provenance: On the front flyleaf in pencil: '13 Oc. 1962' written by the Flemish linguist Walter Couvreur 1914-1996 who was an Orientalist and professor of Indoeuropean linguistics at the University of Gent. The last 6 pages containing notes of Rigaltius have been bound by mistake at the end of preliminary pages Note: The Roman poet Juvenalis ca. 55-140 AD was the last and the greatest of the Roman satirists. He left 16 hexametric satires in five books averaging 750-800 lines each and apparantly arranged in the order of publication. He 'uses names and examples from the past as protective covers for his exposés of contemporary vice and folly'. The Classical Tradition Cambr. Mass. 2010 p. 501 In the first satire already Juvenal writes that he cannot help writing satire seeing the corruption of Rome and confesses that for safety reasons he lived in an age of absolute monarchy he would only attack the dead. His main theme is the dissolution of the social fabric in a city that was swelling like a tumor where wealth was unevenly divided and which was filled with the smell of decay. 'Something more like that age was born in the 17th century and lasted until revolutions destroyed it. Something like Juvenal's Rome appeared in Venice and Paris and Madrid and London; men and women very like his Juvenal's courtiers and courtesans swaggered through Versailles and Blenheim and scores of petty palaces; men like Juvenal himself were flogged by the duke's footmen or after waiting in the earl's vestibule were repulsed from his door. Much of what Juvenal says is permanently true and has been admired through many changing centuries. But when his poems are read in an age like that which produced them they acquire a double energy an intenser truth. So throughout the 17th and 18th centuries he was one of the most important most widely read most influential best understood classical poets'. G. Highet 'Juvenal the satirist' Oxford 1955 p. 213/14 § Wikipedia offers very sketchy information about the French classical scholar Nicolaus Rigaltius or in French Nicolas Rigault 1577-1654. His Vicipaedia article is however perfect it contains useful information literature and links on this lawyer scholar and libarian after Casaubon of Louis XIII. In 1599 he published the 'editio princeps' of the 'Strategicon' of Onosander and later on he produced texts and commentaries of several classical and byzantine authors e.g. 'Phaedrus' 1599 'Nicolai Rigaltii Glossarium taktikon mixobarbaron' 1601 'Martial' 1601 'Oneirocritica' 1603 'Rei accipitrariae scriptores' editio princeps 1612 'Menandri et Philistionis sententiae' 1613 'Juvenal' 1616 'Tertullian' 1628 'Minucius Felix' 1643 'Cyprianus' 1648. § The French scholar Pierre Pithou 1539-1596 published in 1585 a superior text of Juvenalis and Persius. This edition served in 1616 as a model to Rigaltius whose edition in its turn served as a model to editors of Juvenalis for almost 200 years. The engraved title which is not signed is used here for the third time. It was first used for the original edition of 1648 for a repetition in 1658 and for this 1671 reissue. In 1648 the engraved title still bears the name of the engraver it is executed by the Dutch Golden Age engraver Reinier van Persijn. The title depicts a complicated allegorical scene: on the left a naked woman sitting on a crocodile holding in her hand a parrot; then a Janus-headed woman with bird feet and a tail holding up in her left hand a Momus-mask and in her right 2 flaming hearts; in the centre sits on a throne an old woman holding in her left hand a sack of money and in her right what seems a little flask; on the right in the foreground a king reaching for that sack; he is accompanied by a priest a farmer and a soldier; in a window central above the old woman we see the ascension of the poet. Mass. 2010 p. 501 The satires of the stoic poet Aulus Persius Flaccus form one 'libellus' of 6 satires together 650 hexameters. 'They are well described as Horatian diatribes transformed by Stoic rhetoric'. 'He wrote in a bizarre mixture of cryptic allusions brash colloquialisms and forced imagery'. OCD 2nd ed. p. 805 This edition of 1671 is a 'Variorum' edition. It offers the 'textus receptus' which is widely accepted accompanied with the commentary and the annotations of specialists taken from earlier useful normative or renewing editions. Editions like these 'cum notis Variorum' were useful but never broke new ground. The production of this kind of editions was the specialty of Dutch scholars of the 17th and 18th century. The compilers seldom were great scholars but often hard working schoolmasters. Their involvement in publishing a new edition was limited to the necessary but ungrateful task of the beast of burden. Such a plodder was the Dutch editor Cornelius Schrevelius who taught classics at the Schola Latina at Leiden where he had been raised himself. In 1642 he succeeded his father Theodorus Schrevelius as the rector Moderator of the school. He raised at least 11 kids and fell in 1664 victim to the then raging plague. His first Juvenal edition he published in 1648 and it was reissued by Hackius in 1658 1664 and in 1671. Schrevelius' aim was to promote the studies of his young students and to instill in them a necessary fear optatam metam which would make them useful citizens and the pride of their parents. Juvenal is a suitable author for such an enterprise for he flogs wrongdoers and learns them to avoid the path of wickedness and to embrace honesty. Dedicatio p. 2 verso Especially in shameless times as ours he continues satyre is needed. Decent behaviour and faith have been replaced by deceit and swindle. In a short 'Benigno Lectori' 4 verso and 5 recto Schrevelius tells that he relies for the text on the earlier editions of Robertus Stephanus and Pithoeus and that he excerpted the notes and commentaries of Lubinus Farnabius and Casaubon. In addition he offers he says a complete and emendated edition of the old Scholiast. Schrevelius even used two excellent manuscripts which were lent to him by the Leiden professor Salmasius which he tells helped him to solve many difficult problems. § The engraved title deserves some attention. The easiest description we found was 'an engraved title with many figures'. To us it seems an allegorical scene based on the tenth satire Juvenal's famous declamation on the folly of men in desiring in their prayers from the gods vane things as honor fame wealth power beauty or a long life instead of a sane spirit in a healthy body. 'Whole households have been destroyed by the compliant gods in answer to the masters' prayers. In camp nocitura militia and city nocitura toga alike we ask for things that will be our ruin'. Vss. 7/9 in the Loeb-translation of Ramsay Juvenal offers a list of pityful examples such as the once powerful Sejanus who like the Libyan general Gadaffi many centuries later was 'being dragged along by a hook as a show and joy to all'. Vss. 66/67 translation Ramsay Victims of their lust for power were Alexander the Great Xerxes or the punic conqueror Hannibal the man who was once about to destroy Rome. We assume that the royal figure who reaches out for the sack of money or from whose hands it is being snatched is Hannibal. The clue for this assumption is the woman on the crocodile. Such a woman was in 17th century iconography the common personification of Africa for instance on maps. The fate of this scourge of Rome is treated by Juvenal in evocative language in 20 beautiful verses. It begins like this: 'Put Hannibal into the scales; how many pounds' weight will you find in that greatest of commanders This is the man for whom Africa was all too small'. vs. 147/8. Together with the old woman he is the central figure on the title. The positioning of the three woman brings in mind a Triad a triple diety such as the Graces the Moirai or Fates or the Harpies. The Erinyes the avenging spirits also sometimes form a trinity. The standing woman seems to be a mixture of an Erinye and a Harpy. She has some features of such a Harpy the personification of deamonic powers and an agent of terrible punishment. She is bare breasted and stands on huge bird claws with which she abducts the souls of the dead to their doom. In her right hands she holds instead of the usual horrifying snake a Momus mask which personifies satire and mockery the power to make a fool or ass of someone. In her left hand rest two flaming hearts catholic imagery distastful to the protestants and therefore perhaps reprensenting idolatry. Her double faced Janushead looking to the future and the past might be an image of Time. The old woman on the throne is the central figure on the title. To her all movement on the picture is directed. She has the features of Atropos the riged and inflexible one the oldest of the 3 Moirai or Fates and in iconography often depicted as an old woman. She has power over life and death and represents the fate that cannot be avoided. She holds Hannibal's fate in her hands. She withdraws the sack of money power and offers with her right hand the once mighty suppliant a little flask or small beaker with the invitation to poison himself. Juvenal on Hannibal's unglamorous bleak death: 'What then was his end Alas for glory! A conquered man he flees headlong into exile and there he sits a mighty and marvelous suppliant in the Kings's antichamber until it pleases his Bithynian Majesty to awake! No sword no stone no javelin shall end the life which once wrought havoc throughout the world: no but that which shall avenge Cannae and all those seas of blood a ring containing poison'. Vss 158/165 translation Ramsay The engraver follows for this scene the better known version of the Roman historian Livy. In chapter 51 of the 39th book of his History of Rome 'Ab Urbe Condita' Livy tells that Hannibal took his poison in an 'poculum' cup/goblet/bowl/beaker Provenance: Manuscript ownership entry of 'A.J. Enschedé' on the front flyleaf. Adriaan Justus Enschedé 1829-1896 was a member of a famous Dutch dynasty of printers. His forefather Izaak Enschedé established himself in Haarlem in 1703 and there the firm remained for more than 300 years. The firm was and still is famous for the quality of its printing of bonds and banknotes. In 1810 they printed the first Dutch banknotes. Adriaan Justus entered the firm and kept it flourishing. From 1857 onward he was also Keeper of the archives of the city of Haarlem. Sykes of Greenwich Park while on service with the British Royal Navy Mediterranean Fleet 1884 to 1889 aboard the HMS DREADNOUGHT. Our writer has a unique perspective of life both aboard ship and ashore being the steward of the ship's senior officer Commander Bourke Captain THE HONOURABLE Maurice Archibald Bourke C.M.G. Royal Navy 22 December 1853 - 16 September 1900 was an officer in the Royal Navy and Captain of the ill-fated HMS Victoria. Sykes at times is a shadow for the Commander as his Steward think Preserved Killick of the Aubrey-Maturin fiction series by Patrick O'Brian traveling in the highest circles of command greeting Admirals Nobles and Royals even serving at their dinners and parties and as a part of the ship's management team he is aware of all that happens with the ship. Even his initial comments on the state of the ship he counts even the number of cutlasses and pistols in the ship's inventory as if her were Purser. He notes almost everything: ships met guests aboard ship movement of the Commander and other note worthies. His own movements those that travel with him all manner of activities from the mundanities of service to the bone chilling three words every fighting seaman knows 'Cleared for action' there are entries of shore parties for supplies watering and coaling the Ship evolutions of practice at manning the boats etc. to a record of the Ship and the Fleet's movements ports observations weather repairs visiting dignitaries and Royalty Naval commanders and social activities; records of drinking parties and balls thrown by the Captain and cricket matches etc etc. The first diary begins June 25th 1884. Sykes joined the noted and 'popular' H.M.S. Dreadnought at Portsmouth dockyard in October after various preparations/trials the ship sailed for the Mediterranean in November visiting Gibraltar Malta Greece Italy and Smyrna Cadiz Corfu Athens Salonika Venice San Remo Adalia just to name a few includes daily entries through to the 8th October 1888. The first 23.5cm x 19.5cm x 2cm book is rather worn; spine is absent the flexible covers worn slightly chipped and rubbed. The diary is ruled throughout. The endpapers and leaf edges are foxed throughout. All but the last 10 leaves are filled with the last leaf torn. Due to the missing spine the contents are beginning to strain/crack in places. The second diary begins October 17th 1884 at Portsmouth has entries through to the 4th December 1890 and also has a number duplicate entries and data regarding The Dreadnought. There is a large loose photograph of the Dreadnought and a tipped in photograph of HMS Surprise. Many more ports noted especially interesting are the Petersburg Moscow Russian entries. This hardback book 33.3cm x 21.2cm x 2.1cm bound in half leather and cloth is rather worn and the corners and edges are bumped chipped and frayed. The spine is heavily chipped with loss and peeling and the headbands are missing. Internally the contents are cracked throughout and thus the endpapers are loosening and the first leaf is detached. The leaves with the photographs laid down are wrinkled to edges. The one which remains bound has diary entries to verso. All but the last 14 leaves are filled. The leaves themselves are in good condition. Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: WIKIPEDIA: HMS Dreadnought was an ironclad turret ship built for the Royal Navy during the 1870s. Construction was halted less than a year after it began and she was redesigned to improve her stability and buoyancy. Upon completion in 1879 the ship was placed in reserve until she was commissioned in 1884 for service with the Mediterranean Fleet. The ship was then immediately placed in reserve until 1884 when she was commissioned for service with the Mediterranean Fleet. Dreadnought was fitted with ten 1-inch 25 mm Nordenfelt guns on the hurricane deck when she was commissioned. The ship sailed for the Mediterranean Sea on 14 October and remained there for the next decade. The future King George V served aboard in 1886-88. She returned to British waters in September 1894 and began a refit at Chatham Dockyard that included the replacement of her Nordenfelt guns with six quick-firing QF 6-pounder 2.2 in 57 mm and ten QF 3-pounder 1.5 in 37 mm Hotchkiss guns. Dreadnought became a coast guard ship at Bantry Bay Ireland in March 1895. Two years later in March 1897 she was relieved of that duty and became a depot ship in July at Devonport. The ship was reboilered and had more QF guns installed in 1898. Dreadnought was reclassified as a second-class battleship in 1900 and took part in British fleet manoeuvres in that year and the following one. In June 1902 she was refitted at Chatham to serve as a tender to HMS Defiance torpedo school ship at Devonport and later as a depot ship. She was taken out of service and transferred to the Kyles of Bute in 1905. The ship was sold to T. ‎1940s ORIGINAL WWII ROYAL AIR FORCE MANUSCRIPT DIARY BY AN RAF PILOT CRUISING THE BAY OF BENGAL FOR ENEMY SHIPPING AND SUBMARINES IN THE WONDERFUL SUNDERLAND FLYING BOATS‎

‎OBAN AIR BASE. Good. 1940. On offer is a unique original 1940s diary handwritten by British RAF pilot K. Halliday. The diary measures 3.5'x 6.5' contains 100 pages about 80% of which are complete. The leaves are saddle-stitched but staples started to rust and the center leaf is detached and the cover is partially detached. Otherwise the diary is in very good condition and the handwriting is very legible. The diary was kept by 188335 Flying Officer K. Halliday. F/O Halliday was a pilot of Sunderland Flying Boats with 302 FTU and 240 Squadron until March 1946 and 205 Squadron from April 1946. No. 240 and No. 205 Squadrons were a Royal Air Force flying boat and seaplane squadrons. No.240 Squadron spent the first half of the war serving in Home Waters and the second half operating from India. From July 1942 until the end of the war it flew anti-shipping and submarine patrols over the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. In December 1944 the squadron also began to fly agents and supplies into the Dutch East Indies it was disbanded on 1 July 1945. No 205 squadron flew anti-submarine and air rescue patrols out of Koggala Ceylon from July 1942 to the end of the war. The squadrons were flying Consolidated Catalina and since summer 1945 Short Sutherland a British flying boat patrol bomber one of the most powerful and widely used flying boats in WW2. The diary records details of flights between Oban Gibraltar Port Augusta Kasfereit Habbaniya Bahrein Korangi Creek Trombay Red Hills Lake Koggala Cochin Calcutta Syriam Burma Penang Singapore Seletar Hong Kong Labuan Borneo Macasser Dutch East Indies and the UK. The text on the front paper says: "Observations taken "en-route" on Transit Trips"; F/O Halliday K.; No ops or routine flights recorded; Non-secret" The diary covers several ferry trips made between Marc 6th 1945 and March 20th 1946. The first ferry flight was from Obam to Gibraltar and return to UK it took 101.05 hours in 17 days. RAF Oban was a Royal Air Force RAF flying boat base located at the northern end of the island of Kerrera Scotland during the Second World War. Halliday gives details of the flights weather conditions occurrences with the flights problems with the aircraft provides information about the bases where they stopped including sleeping arrangement food and service. He also kept lists of many of his passengers crew rosters etc. Many of his passengers signed the diary particularly those shortly after the war ended. Here are some excerpts from his entries: "Ferry No 1. Oban to Gibraltar. 6th March 1945. Took off from Oban at 1850. ½ route after take off radar packed in went out three times during the trip. "George" automatic pilot went u/s with same old trouble. I/c was howling a lot. Fuel pressure lights came on for S.O. Engine. Had a wizard trip down weather perfect the whole way. Things weren't too bad up till the time the S.O. gave trouble but decided to stay airborne till daylight than risk a landing at night with bad engine"; "8th March. Got cracking on D.I's and snags. There are no radar mechs at New Camp but North Front will lend you a few. The crystal current is apparently the trouble as it drops right off every now and then.The nuts were loose on the "George" oil bottle resulting in loss of oil we ran theP.I. up to the test here and came to the conclusion the compressor had sgeared. - They haven't any new ones here and so as they come by sea from England I'll be flying without it."; "Friday 9th March.On the first leg from Gib. Though there is a little Spanish island to be watched as they boast 2 20mm guns and occasionally use them." He also gives information about personnel meals and accommodation at each destination: "Summary of stay in Gib. Accomodation for officers O.K. the NCO's were rather crowded. Food in both messes O.K. Maintenance fellows quite keen and helpful Cigarettes very cheap 2/4 for 50 as were the wines."; "Summary of stay in Fanara. Officers and N.C.O's eat and sleep together accommodation very crowded indeed - 7 of us in one tent c.o. Mentioned they were arranging more accommodation. Food quite good in the mess quite sufficient spirits in the bar." Most of his flights after the war were in Asia where there were not many large runways and their ability to land on water was required. In addition the diary contains crew rosters lists of passengers etc. Among the passengers were war correspondents Lieutenant Colonels Lathbury and Biddle and other officers and some civilians.
