‎1928 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY OF A YOUNG TEENAGE GIRL TRAVELING TO FINLAND THE HOME OF HER MOTHER'S FAMILY AND HER FATHER'S GRAVE‎

‎FINLAND SCANDINAVIA. Good. 1928. On offer is a charming original 1928 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified except by the initials 'LH' young girl we estimate 13 or 14 maybe 15 who is traveling from we believe her home in New York to Finland the birth country of her Mother. Using a 5 year diary gifted to her by her sister Lea she writes regularly from July 1st through September 2nd and the sporadically through to November 26th. In a beautiful hand the girl writes with a joie de vivre always addressing her Diary as if it were a living being! A young maybe naïve girl she makes charming 'goofs' calling the steward the stewart being shown some porcusos porpoises but goofs aside it is hard not to appreciate any young woman who can write: 'There's a movie tonight but I'm not going to go. I'm going to see some dreams.' Beyond this she is not too pleased initially with Finland. The home where she is staying is too primitive for her being wallpapered in newspaper and soot. The cemetery where her Grandmother and Father are buried is awful and unkempt and she promises herself to return and clear the mess and make them nice. She returns to better humor when they leave for other locales. Collectors and historians of early 20th Century Finland should be well pleased by the detail and observations of the charming precocious young woman. Here are some snippets: July 4 Then came dinner. They gave us each a whistle hat and noise maker. I'm keeping them as souvenirs. I also swiped a menu and a flower from our table. I met a swell boy he is a katzy dancer that's how I met him. He's very interesting and he showed me some Porcuses sic. Played a game of shuffleboard with him. There was dancing and fireworks until 10:30. July 12 they landed in Sweden: July 12 Well we landed and a great bus took us to the station at Goteburg. Here we tried to buy some oranges and I handed the lady 30 cents and she laughed at me took the oranges away and handed me my money. Then I went to get Swedish money and got my oranges.Then we took a dinky train to Stockholm at 11:30pm. We didn't sleep a wink. But looked at scenery because it doesn't get dark here in Sweden. July 15 Well I guess I am not going to like it any too well here. Where Martha lives it's halfway decent but at Laihoses it's awful. Gee the food is awful and they only have three rooms and the walls are papered with old newspapers and the roof is black with soot. Then we went to the graveyard to see my grandmother and grandfather's graves. They're left so carelessly that you can hardly tell they're there. I am going to fix both of them soon. She continued to find quite a difference between living in Finland and the USA: July 18 Anyway after dinner we started and I was dressed in my best and so was Ma and we had to climb over 7 fences and cross over 8 brooks climb two big hills and walk thru two meadows so you can imagine what I looked like when I got there. July 19 Here we wash our clothes in the sauna and then carry them a mile and rinse them by the brook and carry them back again and try to hang them with what they call clothespins. They're like snappers and you press one end and the other end snaps and holds the clothes on the line. July 29 Well here we are in No Man's Land. There's only one house beside the one I'm staying in on the whole island. This morning for breakfast we had some flour pudding - ugh! Then I rowed Ma Martha and me and 5 others to Putila - that's about three times the length of Baisly Lake. Oh Boy! I had some fun. Then we came back and for dinner we had potatoes and fish that wasn't so bad. Aug 18 Then we went to Lokalahti and were invited to stay overnight in Kelon Antila so of course we did. I slept with Martha awhile when I remembered the bed chamber pot full of p---. So I got up and asked Martha what I should do with it and she said "Throw it out of the window". I took her advice and hurried to bed. Aug 30 Then Martha came home and on the way she stopped for my pipe. I measured it and it's 29 inches long. I guess you can get mile long wiffs out of a pipe like that. In the evening we went to Roostens and I saw one of the first clocks used in Finland. The machine is made of wood and it only has one hand. So you can never tell how many minutes past anything it is. Famous Chinese painter 1899-1983 calligrapher he renewed traditional Chinese painting of flowers and birds using ancestral techniques; his art is very close to calligraphy through his brushwork and freedom of gesture. He was the best student of Qi Baishi. He taught painting at the Central Academy of Arts from 1950 until his death. Each painting bears the artist's red seal and a caption. A small tear in the right-hand margin of the letter inherent in the enveloping of the missive; another slight tear at the foot without affecting the text. Liane de Pougy marvels at the youthful vigor of Reinach who had just turned 65: ' Many happy returns for your 65 years which find you so young so fresh so green with such playful studious feelings. My friend your youthful morals hold the secret of your physical youth—as Rosa Josepha said one sustains the other one preserves the other—and this seen head-on. Paper yellowing Note: The German christian Hebraist and classical scholar Johannes Christoph Wolf 1683-1739 is best known for his path-breaking 'Bibliotheca Hebraea' Hamburg 1715-1733 which remained long the most cited source for bibliographic information on Hebrew books and the background of their authors and which bore witness to christian interest in Jewish literature and realia. Wolf especially occupied himself with the study of Oriental languages and literature of which he became professor at the Hamburg gymnasium in 1712. There he compiled the 'Bibliotheca Hebraea'. Among classicists Wolf is known for the edition of his 'Anecdota Graeca sacra et profana' Hamburg 1722-1724 and this edition of 1738 of the letters of the Greek rhetorician and philosopher Libanius ca. 314-392/93 A.D. who was one of the most influential authors of late antiquity. It is the first comprehensive edition of the letters of Libanius accompanied by a Latin translation. § Libanius 'embodied in his work many of the ideals and aspirations of the pagan Greek urban upper classes of late antiquity'. The page numbering of the second part has some irregularities but is alltogether correct Note: This Italian edition of the Libri de Re Rustica first published by Philip Junta in Florence in 1515 gives us the works of four Roman gentlemen-farmers and landowners Cato Varro Columella and Palladius who wrote about agriculture and were also successful practical farmers. As a cultural movement the Italian Renaissance was the product of the aristocracy and the ruling elite. The greater part of the populace were still rural peasants. Most of them worked on private farms or were tenants who shared the crops with their landowners. The urban elite of this time turned themselves into landed aristocracy owning large villa-farms. Capital produced by commercial and trading activities was invested in land. 'It was particularly in the Florence area that this bourgeois colonization of the surrounding countryside coincided with the development of a trading economy'. G. 'A landlord of this period who had entrusted his property to a share-cropper frequently visited his lands and oversaw every activity that took place keeping an eye on the stables and cellars and taking charge of the sale of the produce; he thus appeared to participate fully in farming life' Idem p. 14 Thus the residential extra-urban villas of the 'signori' became 'of central importance to the development of the newly-dawning Renaissance culture' Idem p. 15 The rediscovery of classical authors in the early days of humanism provided important confirmation of these aspirations. 'The 'Rei rusticae scriptores' who now took the stage - including the Romans Cato Varro Columella the 'rusticus' Palladio . provided further food for thought adding value to the literary notion of a house in the country as a refuge corresponding to the classical 'topos' of the joys of country life and the practical and educational concept of farming as the purpose and 'magistra of life'. The ideology of the paired words 'utilitas-delectatio' a humanist concept dates back to classical times and appears in the works of the most authoritative Latin writers including Cicero Seneca and Pliny'. Idem p. 19 § The aim of Cato Varro and Columella was to bring Roman farming of their time on a higher level. The conjunction of these three didactic texts can be found from the Middle Ages. They were jointly published for the first time in 1472 in Venice and form the chief texts on agriculture and rural life in antiquity. The oldest of the trio is the Roman politician Marcus Porcius Cato 234-149 B.C. the source of famous maxims for orators like 'rem tene verba sequentur'. In style and in character he was a typical farmer shrewd hardworking frugal honest sincere but limited. His 'De re rustica' also known as 'De agri cultura' is a kind of commonplace book. It gives us a view of the life of an oldfashioned landowner in that age and offers information on Roman cult and rustic folklore. The second work was written by possibly the greatest scholar Rome produced Marcus Terentius Varro 116-27 B.C. Of the mass of works he wrote only one is preserved to us completely 'De re rustica'. He was a landowner on a large scale who wrote the book in his eightieth year annus octogesimus he tells us in the beginning 'ut sarcinas colligam ante quam profiscar e vita'. It is a philosophic dialogue in 3 books in which he gives sound and practical advice for managing a farm I a stock-ranch II poultry aviary and herb-garden III. 'While giving interesting information on the state of agriculture at that time it is withal a pleasantly discursive book the work of a garrulously entertaining old scholar' H.J. Rose 'A Handbook of Latin Literature' London 1967 p. 222. Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella was a contemporary of Seneca. He wrote his 'De re rustica' consisting of 12 books ca. 60-65 A.D. He was a practical farmer on a large scale who was concerned over the decline of the agriculture in his days. 'Book 1 deals with general matters of buildings and labour 2 with soils and crops 3-5 with vines olives and fruittrees 6-7 with domestic animals 8 with poultry and fishponds 9 with game and bees 10 in verse with gardening 11 with the bailiff's duties and the farmer's calendar 12 with the bailiff's wife's duties'. The late antique Roman author Palladius ca. 400 who also seems to have been a landowner produced a kind of abridgment of Columella. § The texts of these four were edited we are told in the preface by the Florentine classical scholar Nicolaus Angelius Buccinensis Niccolò degli Angeli or Angelio Bucinense or Bucinensis who produced many editions for Giunta e.g. of Plautus Terentius and Nemensianus. Nicolò degli Angeli was professor of Latin & Greek in Florence. 'vir de utraque lingua benemeritus' p. AA1 verso He was born in Bucine in 1448 and died ca. 1529 Provenance: The provenance of this book is dealt with in a longer article than usual because it sheds some light on the English booktrade in the first half of the 20th century and on the history of a Russian refugee family. The search for information about previous owners often brings the antiquarian bookseller to unexpected places in this case to a beautiful portrait of a young woman a masterpiece of the Russian painter Kardovsky. And it sometimes occurs that the offspring of a former owner kindly offers to provide supplementary information. § On the front pastedown of this book has been pasted a booklabel in Russian and in English: 'ex libris Boris Alexandrovitch Chroustchoff'. In the 'Guggenheim Museum collection: paintings 1880-1945' we found at first the following concerning the provenance of a painting of the mother of Boris Alexandrovitich Chroustchoff Marya Anastasievna Chroustchova made by the Russian painter Dimitry Kardovsky 1900: 'Biographical information . is fragmentary. According to their son the late Boris Chroustchoff who was in correspondence with J. J. Sweeney in 1959-60 his parents owned a large estate in southern Russia as well as a house in Munich and one in St. Prex near Geneva. . Boris Chroustchoff adds that his father was 'a very great friend of Kandinsky and other members of the Blaue Reiter school especially Javlensky. Both Kandinsky and Javlensky often used to stay with us in the Ukraine and were constant visitors when we lived in Munich. Our house was always full of painters who found a very good subject in my mother. In fact Javlensky painted a very fine portrait of her in a red dress which has now disappeared' letters of December 27 1959 and January 10 1960. The attribution to Javlensky is incorrect. It was Kardovsky Marya Anastasievna and Alexander were separated in 1901. She returned to Russia with her daughter who died soon afterwards and Marya herself apparently perished during the Revolution. Alexander remained in Western Europe with his son Boris and they moved to England. . Boris' 'father Alexander took the portrait with him to England where it hung in their house in Harrow-on-the-Hill until 1908 when it apparently disappeared correspondence with the Museum 1960. Whether it was actually stolen or whether it was sold remains to be established. Boris Chroustchoff has since died and further information has not hitherto been discovered'. § A few years ago we received supplementary information about the owner of this book and about the painting of Kardovsky from the daughter of Boris Chroustchoff Natasha de Chroustchoff who is living in Great Britain. She wrote us that Boris Chroustchoff 1892-1968 'was a very interesting but elusive man whose name can be found mentioned en passant in the lives of others with stronger claims to fame'. His father Alexander sent him to an English public school Harrow in 1906. He also bought a house in the vicinity of the school where the portrait of Marya Anastasievna Chroustchova hung on the stairs. After Boris left school in 1909 he lost sight of the painting of his mother. § After his studies Boris learned the trade from the wellknown London bookseller Irving Davis and the Italian bookseller Guiseppe Pino Orioli who set up a bookshop 'Davis & Orioli' in Museum Street in 1913. Davis died in 1967. Orioli had learned in his turn the trade from the notorious antiquarian bookseller Voynich of the famous Voynich Manuscript. 'In the early 1920s Boris with his friend and business partner Lionel Jellinek opened the Salamander Bookshop in Silverstreet now Barter Street in Bloomsbury London' Natasha informs us. The shop was named after the Croustchoff family crest. Young Boris was the bibliographic expert. 'He specialised in medicine natural history cookery and Russica with a particular interest in incunabulae'. Natasha writes 'I believe they did pretty well until the Wall Street crash of 1929'. 'There are stories about the rather eccentric manner in which my father conducted his affairs: snatching a book out of a potential customer's hand because he didn't like the look of him and so on'. Boris compiled for his own bookshop 5 catalogues which were considered exemplary. § The painting of his mother popped up in the Guggenheim Museum that acquired it from the German art dealer Otto Stangl in 1950. In 1999 Nathasha was allowed to see the painting in the Guggenheim Museum where it was held in depot. In May 2015 Sotheby's in New York auctioned this painting. It was sold with the incomprehensible wisdom of the Museum to benefit the Museums' acquisition fund. Their aim was to bring Roman farming on a higher level. The conjunction of these three didactic texts can be found from the Middle Ages. They were jointly published for the first time in 1472 in Venice and form the chief texts on agriculture and rural life in antiquity. The oldest of the trio is the Roman politician Marcus Porcius Cato 234-149 B.C. the source of famous maxims for orators like 'rem tene verba sequentur'. 'He distinguished himself for fearless and ruthless attacks on those whose way of life did not agree with his own somewhat old-fashioned and puritanical morality'. H.J. Rose 'A Handbook of Latin Literature' London 1967 p. 91 In style and in character he was a typical farmer shrewd hardworking frugal honest sincere but limited. His 'De agri cultura' also known as 'De re rustica' is a kind of commonplace book. It gives us a view of the life of an oldfashioned landowner in that age and offers information on Roman cult and rustic folklore'. § The second work was written by possibly the greatest scholar Rome produced Marcus Terentius Varro 116-27 B.C. Of the mass of works he wrote only one is preserved to us completely 'De re rustica libri III' and further more there are parts and fragments of some other works. He was a landowner on a large scale who wrote 'De re rustica' in his eightieth year annus octogesimus he tells us in the beginning 'ut sarcinas colligam ante quam profiscar e vita'. It is a philosophic dialogue in 3 books in which he gives sound and practical advice for managing a farm I a stock-ranch II poultry aviary and herb-garden III. The texts of this trio were edited by Piero Vettori or Petrus Victorius 1499-1585. With his edition of 1541 begins for the 'Scriptores de re rustica' according to the 18th century German scholar J.M. Gesner a new era the 'Aetas Victoriana'. Gesner based his own edition of the 'Scriptores rei rusticae veteres latini' of Leipzig 1735 on the work of Vettori. He slightly revised Vettori's text with the help of some manuscripts and earlier edtions. This 'Scriptores rei rusticae veteres latini' edition of 1787 is a reissue of that edition of Leipzig 1735. The 'notitia literaria' is brought up to date and added are a translation of the life of Cato by Plutarch and the 'Varro-Vita' by M. Hanke of Leipzig 1669. ‎This "Chicago Times" sports cartoonist hit the big time with his 1932 creation "Grin and Bear It" which became nationally syndicated and kept him at the drawing board until 1974. Signed print 5¼" X 6½" n.p. n.d. Near fine. Interesting glossy "slick" in printer's parlance of a daily "Grin and Bear It" installment: Three road workers with a pickup truck full of "Historical Site" plaques -- one holds a plaque and points enquiringly at a spot in the dirt while another barks out "No need to be too accurate about where you put them men. there's always arguments about those things anyway!." The artist boldly inscribed is above their image: "TO / WARREN / REEDER / my best / Lichty." Reeder was a well-known Indiana realtor autograph collector and author of the 1972 book "No Performances Today: An Account of the Events Leading Up to and Following the Train Wreck of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus Train". ‎1862 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A SASSY NEW JERSEY SCHOOLMARM THOUGH THE BACKDROP OF THE CIVIL WAR IS NEVER FAR AWAY‎

‎NEW JERSEY CROSSWICKS TOWNSHIP. Good. 1862. On offer is a terrific diary from the early 1860's in New Jersey U.S. A small 8 inch by 6.5 inch notebook this diary has 20 pages and they are 100% complete. Each entry warrants 1 to 3 lines. The cover shows some wear and tear and the last page is loose. All other pages are intact. The author is Lida Field. She lives on a family farm in Crosswicks Township New Jersey with her parents. The diary covers the entire year of 1862 although there is not necessarily an entry for each day. Casual research has not found any additional biographical information. That she lives on a farm is evident with the opening line: "Happy New Year! Commenced with killing hogs. . " Jan 1 / p1. Not only does this line set the stage but it indicates that this young woman has a wit and sense of humour which comes through in her entries. Lida mentions her father and sister by name Richard and Mary as well as many friends and neighbours. The diary is chock full of the details involved in running a farm and rural living in the mid19th century. She makes constant reference to the weather underlining how intimately they are connected to the natural world around them and its impact on their lives: Lida teaches in the local school and attendance follows the weather and demands of the growing season: ". almost discouraged for only 4 of the twenty four scholars are present" May 5 / p 8 "Pleasant. Had 23 scholars" June 3 / p 9. As the weather warmed up attendance increased. She has a very active social life and much time is spent hosting or visiting friends and participating in community activities: "Cloudy. Ellen and I attended the Teachers' Institute. We joined the class in Orthography. In the evening we attended a lecture delivered by John Collins. Subject: Cuba. It was very interesting and well attended."Jan 6 /p2 "Clear and good sleighing. Uncle sister and I took a ride to J. Decou's. Evening Annie called." Feb 3 / p3 A number of surrounding communities are mentioned by name including Trenton Bordentown Browns Mills and Allentown NJ - all within sleigh or wagon distance of Crosswicks Township. Although the American Civil War is raging there is only one reference to it in her diary: "Very discouraging news from the South" Sept 2 / p18. This most likely refers to the Second Battle of Bull Run in Manassas VA fought Aug 28-30. Lee's Confederate Army crushed the Union army led by Major General John Pope. Altogether this is a very well-written diary by an educated and observant woman. Historians studying rural life in mid-19th century America or education is rural America would find this an excellent resource.
