The entries take the form of 1-2 line notes with a year jotted at the end of many. Many take the form of letters sent and received: "Sent letter to Mrs. C on 12th Nov 1873"; "353 East 82nd St. Miss Harrison Sent Alcroft & Co Best glove makers in the world"; "10 o' clock Brought the services of Sunday to a close"; "Steamship the Queen arrived at Queenstown Mar 2nd 1876." He also keeps a partial record of his daily expenditures. The 2nd volume is a dated diary for the year 1877. Again many of the entries are brief detailing church meetings he attends letters sent and received and news he has received: "Mrs. L. Received a letter from Uncle H. Wilson & Victoria Connors Township of Reach now part of Durham Region Ontario Ontario Canada" Apr 7 1877; "Best time on record. Steamship Germanic crosses the Atlantic in 7 days 11 hours 37 minutes" Apr 13 1877; "Railroad strike in Baltimore Ohio and Plattsburg ." July 21 1877; ". Wreck of U.S. steamer Huron. Over 100 lives lost" Nov 24 1877. This was the USS Huron a naval gun boat lost off North Carolina. Context suggests he attended the Methodist Church on 61st Street: ". Reception in Parsonage 61st St. MEC . rented Pew No. 41 in 61st St. Church Price $36.00 commencing Nov 1" Oct 22 1877. This diary also contains a partial record of expenses for the years as well as an address list. For a historian they offer a glimpse into the world of one individual living in Manhattan in the later part of the 19th century. NEW BRITAIN CONNECTICUT CT. Very Good. 1932. On offer is a super archive of ten 10 small manuscript diaries for the years 1932-1933-1934-1936-1938-1939-1940-1941-1943 and 1945 handwritten by Lewis Morrison of New Britain Connecticut a Scottish immigrant arrived in the U.S. in 1913 born November 25 1890. At first glance it is easy to assume Mr. Morrison is a labourer with little to say in his diaries as the entries are somewhat terse and sometimes sporadic but perseverance finds a labourer and intellectual a man who plays the violin teaches reads prodigiously attends concerts and other entertainments and is somewhat of a renaissance man. The ten diaries provide a unique picture of the Depression from a singularly hard working yet very cerebral man. He appears to work for Russell and Erwin a hardware factory plus teaches music students and plays the violin in an orchestra. His entries are generally factual such as what he did how many hours he worked who his students are car maintenance books he reads movies he sees. There's an undercurrent of humor and intelligence in many of the entries and frustration at the economic climate. Some quotes are: Factory goes on 5 hours a day - 25 hours a week. Car greased in Bristol 27745 mileage. Door Check dept. closed for 4th week. Broke E string in middle of Haydn symphony. Aneita's 6th birthday - picnic at Rockwell Park. David visits us in new Buick 8 - we ride around block. They seem to struggle financially due to the Depression. One entry says "Visited Welfare Department City Hall at landlord request to try for help towards rent payment. $58 behind to date." I have not read much in the other nine diaries but they appear to have similar content. Each is about 2/3 to 3/4 full if not more. He briefly notes newsworthy events such as Bruno Hauptmann's execution for the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby hearing Lloyd George on the radio traveling to Nova Scotia he notes his 20th Anniversary in America heard Yehudi Manhuin sic voting socialist at Trade School the "New Deal" the end of Prohibition bombing of Pearl Harbor death of President Roosevelt the atom bomb the end of the war etc. Genealogical information indicates he was married to Nettie Morrison from Canada was 5' 5" with hazel eyes a slight build and ruddy complexion had a daughter named Anita he always spells it Aneita and died in June 1971. Most of the diaries measure 2 3/4" by 5 3/8" one is smaller. 1920s SUPER ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK HAND WRITTEN BY A MUSICALLY INCLINED MACHINIST'S MATE WHO CATALOGUED AND COMPILED POPULAR AND NAVAL SONGS FROM WWI THROUGH WWII
U.S. Navy. Good. 1920. On offer is an excellent small songbook kept by an American sailor. This notebook measures 6 inches by 3 3/4 inches and contains 140 pages. It is 60% complete. The cover and pages are in good condition and the handwriting is very legible. For centuries sailors have used songs to help with their heavy work to entertain themselves and to build the sense of crew spirit so needed to man ships for long periods of time in all kinds of weather. Lewis Szarek was no different. A Machinists Mate in the United States Navy he apparently served from the late 1920's into WWII. He has written his name and service US Navy on the inside cover. Casual research suggests that he comes from Providence RI. However no other biographical data was found. The notebooks contain the lyrics to 39 songs. One song Coghlan's Black Gang Crew possibly points to the ship he served on in WWII - the destroyer USS Coughlan DD 606. The term 'black gang' is a naval term with its origins in the days of coal-fired engines. The black gang are the sailors who work in the engine room assigned to either the Machinist Division his or the Boiler Division. The term is used to this day. They range from sentimental to bawdy to downright explicit. The book opens with a very explicit song - The Young Stenographer - that seems to go on and on forever - 101 stanzas! Others are tiles a reader today may recognize including LeHigh Valley Are You Lonely Tonight Louise and Dangerous Dan McGrew. Columbus gets a bit of a bumpy ride in his rendition of Christopher Columbus. There are a couple of railroad songs. Many are sentimental in nature which reflects the long days and months away from home. The last song Heil Hitler is a very explicit description of what 'they' meaning the Americans were going to do with Hitler when they caught him. Throughout the allied armed forces there were similar types of songs about Hitler Mussolini and Tojo. This is an interesting collection of songs that obviously were enjoyed in the enlisted ranks mess while ships were at sea. Lewis; 29 cm. Contemporary half red morocco with marbled paper over boards. Six spine compartments between gilt-rules and raised bands with gilt-tooled decoration. Black morocco spine label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Lewis's Etchings. Red morocco label on front board with double gilt-ruled border gilt corner rosettes and title "Etchings of the Physiognomy Manners & Character of the People of France & Germany." All page edges marbled to match boards and endpapers. Remains of a small circular label on front fixed endpaper reading "Abbey" along lower edge. The plates were issued for insertion in T.F. Dibdin's Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany 1821. Included are directions for placing the plates in Dibdin's work. Lewis made hundreds of drawings while accompanying Thomas Frognall Dibdin on his tour of France and Germany some of which were used to illustrate Dibdin's book. A disagreement about how much Dibdin owed Lewis for the drawings developed after the tour and the additional plates presented here were undoubtedly published by Lewis to generate some extra income from his work. In Very Good Condition: leather and boards are rubbed most heavily at head of spine and corners; corner of title page lightly soiled; light foxing primarily affecting the leaves on which the plates are mounted rather than the plates themselves; plates are clean and crisp.
