A choice almost sepia tone head-and-shoulders of the balding mustachioed musician. A facsimile white "signature" appears in white at lower left on top of his shoulder and Liebling signs here large and bold on top of in effect obscuring this in black ink dating it beneath his signature and above it adding: "To / Mr. John L. / Leiser / with best / wishes / and / in kind / remembrance / of." ‎1867 - 1921 ORIGINAL SIGNIFICANT ARCHIVE OF TEN 10 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY A VICTORIAN ERA CAREER OFFICER IN THE ROYAL NAVY LITTERED WITH FIRST-HAND ACCOUNTS OF NAVAL HISTORY INCLUDING THE SINKING OF THE HMS VICTORIA BY THE HMS CAMPERDOWN‎

‎ASEA/ENGLAND. Good. 1867. On offer is a superb group of original manuscript diaries handwritten by Lieutenant Albert Smith of the Royal Navy describing in vivid detail many important and historically significant scenes in British colonial and naval history over the course of 50 or so years in the Royal Navy from 1867 to 1921 as well as offering an intimate portrait of Lieutenant Smith through his lifetime. A dedicated diarist Lt. Smith chronicles his career over 10 notebooks totaling more than 1000 pages. Each diary is numbered accordingly from books 2 through to 18 1 7 and 12-17 are absent. The diaries give first-hand accounts of Lieutenant Smith's travels in the Royal Navy through England Europe Africa and the Middle East over the course of his naval career. Born in 1944 he was the child of Charles Smith and his wife Ann born Duffett of Wotton-under-Edge Gloucestershire. Historians collectors and researchers of the genre will delight in Smith's eye for detail providing specifics even in his genealogical notes on his nuclear and extended family down to the time of birth of each of his siblings and seven children! Fascinatingly the first volume of the diary tells of Albert's concerted efforts to find himself a wife. He writes that he has been in love with the daughter of a Mr. Gortley head of the Jews' Orphan School for three years. He also speaks of a 'Lizzie' and 'my little Jewess' and once again declares his love to a woman this time a 'Miss Hyde' but is rejected. Keeping with Smith's detailed diaries he gives the text of his letter to her. Smith eventually marries Elizabeth referred to as 'E B' on December 31 1870. Smith was a devout Christian and his religious sympathies and convictions are a common thread throughout all diaries. He describes himself often as a follower and believer in Jesus Christ and calls God "The Eternal Lord The First Cause The Father in Truth and Love." Despite his convictions Smith was also interested in unorthodox pursuits such as phrenology and astrology. The diaries also abound with passages of spiritual reflections and self-examination. The diaries commence on May 20 1867 off the coast of Algiers. Smith only 23 years old is serving on HMS Victoria the same HMS Victoria that he would see sink and take the lives of hundreds. The diaries begin on the day it sails from Malta for England. Smith then serves on the 'Boscawen training ship for Boys'. After serving on the ship he settles on the Island of Portland in Dorset until 1872 when he is promoted to Warrant Officer and assigned to the HMS Excellent. On the HMS Excellent Smith goes on tours of the East African Coast and the Mediterranean where on December 22 1892 he is promoted from Gunner to Chief Gunner. Also in 1892 during a tour in the Mediterranean Smith's ship the HMS Camperdown accidently rams into the HMS Victoria causing serious damage to the Camperdown and sinking the Victoria. The Victoria sinking causes the death of 21 officers and 348 men. The news of the accident caused a sensation and appalled the British public at a time when the Royal Navy occupied a prime position in the national consciousness. Smith's entry on the accident contains a two page printed clipping from some Naval publication which states "It is with an overwhelming sense of sorrow that we have to record the awful disaster that has happened to the 'Victoria.'…on Thursday afternoon June 22nd whilst manoevering off Tripoli the 'Victoria' and 'Camperdown' collided. The 'Victoria' sank 15 minutes afterwards bottom upward in 80 fathoms of water. It is computed that twentytwo Officers including the Commander-in-Chief and about 348 men were drowned.' The clipping records the names of the officers drowned and a list of the men 'invalidated' and currently recovering in a Royal Naval Hospital. Smith writes that he lying in his cabin on the 22nd reading a 'tale of a young lady who has months after marriage died of consumption nursed carefully by her husband who never left her - her husband had received a letter saying that his brother…had gone down in a ship off Smyrna and all hands perished when all at once I heard a commotion as tho the ship had grounded on shore. I hastily put on a coat left my cabin and rushed up the round the upper deck saw the life boats all carried…We had run into the flag ship Victoria - at least we collided she crossed our bows we were going astern with our Engine but still had headway on the ship. I went down to the fore camp astrident - the water was pushing in fast. I then changed coat & cap put my watch in my pocket went on bridge asking that boats might be lowered & told the flag seat that we were making water fast I then went to my station general …all at once she suddenly heeled over the sides of the ship was crowded with human beings struggling jumping hurrying to save their lives some jumped into the seas some ran down the bottom of the ship and some jumped over the quarter rail - on to the propeller which was now revolving with rapid rate out of the water. We were all staggered in a minute - she turned over went down bow first and left nothing but a mass of debris and struggling humanity in the water." Smith then writes of the lifeboats frantically trying to save as many men as possible and the carnage and horror that he witnessed as a result of this horrible collision. "Number missing 380 - saved 260." Smith writes another few pages on the cause of the crash and takes up a third of a page with a rough sketch of the Victoria's and Camperdown's actions that lead to the collision. The next few day's entries deal with the aftermath of the event including repairs on the Camperdown and the mourning for the lost men. "June 24 - a funeral procession passed by I shed tears over the brave fellows sunk beneath the waves" There are also pages describing Smith's time in the 'Malta Dockyard' as the boat is being fixed. ‎ABOARD THE HMS CORNWALL. Good. 1905. On offer is a super early 20th Century original manuscript Royal Navy Ship's Log handwritten and kept by a Lieutenant Douglas A. St______his signature inscription on the endpaper is hard to decipher. The log book is part statistical and part diary as Douglas begins the book August 5th 1905 through December 1906. There are some anecdotal remarks and some clippings tipped in but for the most part this details the Ship's position and condition on 34 pages. Then there are 20 pages of handwritten diary like notes clippings and anecdotal details of the Ship's cruise Aug 1st 1905 to last entry July 22 'the Home Fleet mobilized I took up my war appointment to HMS Canopus Battleship.' The Ship goes from Spithead to Torbay. He describes the Fleet thusly: '11 battleships; 14 1st Class Cruisers;4 2nd ;8 Scouts; 10 Gun Boats; 8 Parents Ships etc etc; 14 Destroyers; 12 T.B.; 15 Submarines.' Near the back in a separate section are other notes on the Ship some financial and statistical and the on two pages he describes his naval career in detail at the back beginning as a Cadet on HMS Camperdown and many other notable and storied ships such as HMS Boadicea HMS Benbow HMS Hotspur and HMS Theseus to name a few. Sadly his last entry on his career is a Half Pay Lieutenant. ‎1930s FASCINATING AND UNIQUE DIARY OF AN ARMED DETAIL OF FIVE MARINES TRAVELING BY STEAMBOAT INTO THE INTERIOR OF CHINA EACH MAN CONTRIBUTING RECORDING AND DETAILING THE LIFE AND NATURE ALL AROUND THEM‎

‎Yangtze River Shanghai Hankow China. Good. 1935. Unbound. On offer is a fascinating and significant handwritten diary that was found with other military items from a US 4th Marine Veteran George Mower who served in China WW II and Korea. The very unique diary was written by five Marines their rank and last names listed on the first page while on duty in China from Dec. 28 1934 through Feb 1 1935. The very first words of the journal are as such: "This diary of facts concerning a trip made up the Yangtzie River into the interior of China that mysterious and forbidding land of the Green and Yellow Dragon - by five marines detailed as armed guards for the Yangtzie Rapid Steamship Co. - an American owned and operated Co. - was conceived and written by Oscar Nelson and George Mowers with the help of the remainder of the detail. The trip and what is said about the country is described by Mowers. Nelson was the he located the different points of interest learned their names and their distances apart. All members of the group added the human interest which is committed to the pages. This diary was not kept for material gain but only as a souvenir. It is written in the simple words of those who made the trip so that as they ramble through its pages so they may live over again in the memory those days spent on the Yangtzie River." The men on detail are referred to as Lt. Hussa Sgt. Stevens Cpl. Nelson Pvt Mowers and Pvt. Sours. On December 28 they gather their supplies and embark "at 5:15 PM aboard Yangtze River Steamship Co. Ship I'Fung". During the detail there are many details on their trip often in the military way of breaking down the events by the time they happened "At 1700 it begins to darken - a cold rain makes visibility poor. The bleak and dreary banks of the river is now relieved by several hills crowned by pagodas and tall trees." On another day the diary states "The weather is cold and the wind still too high to allow us to venture out on deck to observe much of the country along the banks of the river. What I can see of the short from my cabin window looks to be cold beak bare and desolate. Occasionally I can pick out a small grass shack from which drifts a small lazy column of smoke. Then at other times I can see a Chinese farmer scurrying along the banks of the river or perhaps he's a fisherman. What a perfect setting for one who likes nature in the raw. I'll take mine after it has been refined." There are plenty of details about life on the ship and the dreary and rainy conditions which seem to be ever present. As well the authors of the diary seem to be slightly interested in Chinese history as there are some small passages on the history of China: "At the close of the Sung dynasty it was founded by refugees who fled from other parts of the country to escape the conquering Mongols." There is also writings about the little time off in Shanghai and Hankow. "Arrived at Hankow and anchored at 1600. Clean well built city from the river. Went ashore after dinner and walked up the - clean and well policed. Rickshawed and walked thru the city. A big prosperous city - modeled after Shanghai - but did not see much of interest. Their famed "Cabaret Row" was a flop. Was sober and the girls looked old and their teeth were dirty. The liquor was bad." There are also run ins with bandits and pirates "Now when you get on the land opposite your ship you run into some of the famous Yangtzie River Pirates in the guise of men. They demand 40 cents big money to bring you a hundred yards to your boat. And they get it or you swim." One of the trips ashore is described as "By chance we were witness to a very interesting sight this afternoon. We saw a number of Chinese soldiers forcing a number of Chinese civilians into service in the army. They must have had about a thousand of these recruits and they marched them down the streets four abreast. Some of the recruits were greasy and dirty looking as though they had been taken from shops or factories while others were a little seedy looking and indicating that they were farmers or fishermen. What a strange site they formed as they marched along.In age and size they ranged from mere boys to full grown men. Each one of them carried on his back a blanket or rag in which was roped all of his worldly possessions as a whole they resembled a herd of wild sheep being herded to the slaughter house. Such is life in China some Chinaman with a little money who has had the privilege of gaining a little knowledge and an education declares himself a general recruits himself an army - either willing or otherwise - and procedes to make himself master of all he surveys." The diary is full of these fascinating little observations of life and nature in China along the banks of the Yangtze River. There are also details on the military strife happening in China in the mid-1930s. "National Chinese soldiers are being sent up the river to Wanhsien and other towns in the Szechuan province for very obvious reasons. Szechuan theoretically is supposed to be a part of the Republic of China but in practice it is not. It is controlled by General Lu an influential and powerful General. Szechuan is the richest province in China is isolated from the rest of China due to the fact that it lies in the remote western part of the country and is surrounded by mountain boundaries which are almost inaccessible except by way of the Yangtzie river through the gorges . It is to this isolation and natural defence formed by the mountains General Lu in the past with aid of his powerful and well equipped army has been able to maintain control over Szechuan and levy and collect the taxes. The armored detail eventually switches from their original boat to the I'Ping and then to the I'Chang. The diary ends on Feb. 2nd with no mention of any transfer or change in duty only that they were close to Shanghai. It is unclear whether this diary is complete or not. Each page is numbered at the top so they are very easy to keep in order as the pages are loose and unbound. It ends with "We anchored for the night at 2200. Lt. Shaw said that the Captain told him we would be in Shanghai about 1000 tomorrow. Nelson is becoming more and more restless. He is longing for the dear old Shanghai nights." All pages of the diary are easily readable in a very accessible script. There are spelling mistakes consistently throughout the diary but they are not a barrier to understanding the words. On offer is an absolutely super archive and significant historical group of typed and manuscript papers mostly original copies pertaining to official Navy memos and documents relating to the education received by Lieutenant Alexander C. Brown C-VS USNR of Alexandria Virginia at the newly created and opened July 1st 1942 Harvard Naval Training School. We note: There is a fascinating and very strong likelihood this Lt. Brown could very well be renowned and prolific author Alexander Crosby Brown of Maryland maritime tales and non fiction but we cannot make the final connection. This group is significant on a number of levels. While the earliest date we find in a document dated September 1942 titled Memo 48. Most of the other materials likely come before that date and thusly this archive reveals the very complex education in radio engineering and foreign intelligence as evidenced by a portion of the papers called Correspondence Course in Foreign Intelligence with other sections headed Codes and Ciphers Tactics Radio Engineering Charts and even a Hints to Newcomers memo. The papers are all loose with hints of having once been in binders or duo tangs thusly we cannot attest to whether the 3 inch stack of papers is complete though it does appear very comprehensive. ‎SOUTH PACIFIC PHILIPPINES. Good. 1943. On offer is a super original World War II diary dated November 1943 to November 1944 handwritten by Lieutenant Claude A. Ashley. Claude proves to be a dedicated diarist rarely missing a day reporting all his activities from hunting for beers or seeking to bomb the enemy. Covering 52 missions this young personable officer and true American hero serves his country with distinction rarely griping always ready for the next mission but never with drama in fact the Lieutenant proves to be one cool customer. Here are some snippets: "April 3rd B-24 and B-25 lost this morning. 24 lost engine and hit 25. Both blew up and burned having a lot of bad luck lately. April 8 30th Mission finally made it. Really hit Hollandia hard. Little weather but not to bad. April 10 31st Mission Hit Hansa Bay today. Nice and leisurely trip but they still shoot close. Shrapnel came through window about a foot from my head. One plane from 321st got knocked down. May 1 Left wonderful Sydney this morning…. next day Well we didn't leave…suits me as I can use some more of the milk shakes and steak. next day…we get another go at streak and milk shakes….next day….Finally we got off…Worse luck we got stuck in Morsby…boy what a hole Morsby is." Then: "52nd and LAST Mission" until Nov 23rd he writes with such obvious relief after arrival in San Francisco "End of Journey. Mission Completed." There are 53 pages with 6 days to a page which is 318 days. The diary measures 8¼ x 5½ inches. Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: One online source: "The "Jolly Rogers" self-styled "The Best D - - n Heavy Bomb Group in the World" have been operating in the southwest Pacific for the last II months. In this time they have sunk more enemy shipping shot down more planes and have flown more successful missions than any other heavy group in the southwest. On offer is an original very unusual very different kind of manuscript relic of World War II and America's war in the South Pacific being a log book for "Malaria Control Team 28" handwritten by we believe Lieutenant JG G.H. Penn detailing his mission primarily at M.T.B. Base 21 on Mios Woendi Island from 3 July 1944 to 10 August 1944 and at Advance Base 3 on Amsterdam Island from August 1944 to 21st February 1945. Lt. Penn we can safely assume was a scientist within the field of Malaria control and mosquito life given that we found some post War references to his published contributions on the subjects. The log is a fascinating blend of scientific data detailing efforts by US armed forces to systematically test for identify treat and eliminate tropical diseases including malaria primarily on the Pacific Islands of Mios Woendi and Amsterdam Island and diary narrative bordering on forensics and detective work such as hunting through garbage dumps and disposals 'heads' etc. for maggots and larval specimens lab work and much more with the back drop of the War at a very intense time; constant raids and attacks by Japanese aircraft and kamikaze pilots dealing with casualties from the USS Orestes after it was hit by a kamikaze and much more in the 64 full hand-written pages. Historians and researchers of the American war effort in the South Pacific will all too well recognize the utter importance of malarial control at the time given the debilitating effects that the disease could wreak on unprotected soldiers and marines. This unique journal makes for an irreplaceable record of that effort from the hands of a man that studiously and determinedly worked to eradicate the threat as his part of the war effort. On offer is a typed letter signed from Lieutenant Colonel Gerald William Lingen Nicholson 1902-1980 dated April 16th 1957 on letterhead of the Anglican Church Diocese of Ottawa The Synod Office to The Editor Globe and Mail Toronto. The letter concerns sending a review copy of the newly published book Faith of Our Fathers 1957 by Reverend Robert Jefferson and Leonard Johnson. Reverend Jefferson was at the time the Bishop of the Diocese of Ottawa. At the time of publication the Diocese included the Deaneries of Arnprior Carleton Lanark Pembroke Prescott Russell and Stormont. Lt. -Col. G. W. L. Nicholson was a Canadian soldier historian author and teacher. He was the Director of the Historical Section Army Headquarters and is best known for his 1962 book Canadian Expeditionary Force 1914-1919 the only official history of Canada's participation in World War I. This item is a single page previously folded 7-¼ x 10 inches. There are small holes at the top left corner where a staple was removed. On offer is an interesting manuscript relic of World War I being a handwritten analysis of the noted and notorious 1914 Battle of Le Cateau by Lieutenant Colonel Hardress Waller of Forcett Hall Richmond North Yorkshire. Waller was particularly interested in military history and his 12 folio sized pages of notes on the history of this WWI battle of Le Cateau offers an intimate perspective and the setup of the analysis suggest this was for a publication or formal report. Intriguingly the sheets are on Royal embossed letter sheets adding credence that this may have been prepared as a formal report. With erasures and corrections as well as a useful table of contents at the end. A fine and early testimony to the interest of a French officer in the Bambara language then only spoken orally. The manuscript opens with nine pages of historical introduction beginning with the origins of the ""création d'une armée noire"" by Colonel Mangin in 1909 explaining the need for a ""manuel vraiment pratique"". It is followed by a first section containing elements of Bambara grammar then a ""vocabulaire général et manuel de conversation"" and finally a ""vocabulaire militaire"". In his introduction Lieutenant Rottier outlines the rationale for the creation of this lexicon: ""Le Bambara est actuellement la langue la plus répandue en A.O.F. il est parlé couramment par près de 5 millions de noirs . C'est après le français la langue des tirailleurs sénégalais c'est le bambara que parle tout homme n'ayant que quelques mois de service dans ses relations avec ses camarades d'autres races ou surtout avec ses gradés alors qu'il ne bredouille encore qu'un français 'petit nègre' presque incompréhensible. Nine magnificent in-text woodcuts 63 x 50 mm also showing these same Muses elegantly dressed and holding their distinctive symbols. 30 lines per page in rounded characters a full-margined copy not rubricated. The leaf a2 does not have a signature c2 is incorrectly labelled b2. Binding signed Honegger. Ex-libris from the Guelfo Sitta and Gianni de Marco libraries glued to the inside of the first board dry stamp of the latter at the right-hand bottom of the first white endpaper. Several very discreet wormholes without loss of text on the last leaves. Verified complete by a bibliographer of the Bernard Quaritch Ltd bookshop on 8 May 1925 cf. note on the verso of the last leaf. Rare and important treatise – the very first on the topic – marking a significant advance in the humanist and philological knowledge of the ancient deities. It is preceded by several lines addressed to the reader as well as a inscription entitled “Andreae Reginio Romarici monti Sonrario” by Philesius Vogesigena Matthias Ringmann humanist and scientific publisher of the work. Then follows a dedicatory epistle to Luca Ripa one of Giglio Gregorio Giraldi's old Ferrarese teachers dated 1507 in Milan. The author claims to have composed his Syntagma de Musis when he was still only an adolescent. The dissertation closes with several verses by ancient or contemporary poets to Giraldi – Virgil Pico della Mirandola and Fausto Adrelini – who have before him praised the graces of the Muses. This treatise emblematic of Medici-neoplatonism will have a significant influence on pictorial cycles and mythographers of the 16th century. The superb wood engravings illustrating the work do not conform to the ancient or Italian tradition but rather represent Germanic virgins. These woodcuts close in style to those of Dürer are very clearly inspired by the artist without being able to be formally attributed to him. ‎WATERVILLE ONEIDA COUNTY NEW YORK. Good. 1907. On offer is a very interesting uniquely matched pair of original 1907 husband and wife manuscript diaries handwritten by Lillie A. Waterman nee Lillie A. Harris of Earlville New York and her husband of 9 years Warren D. Waterman of Waterville New York. Lillie is the true blue diarist in the family writing nearly every day and Warren does the best he can but sputters out in May. The diaries detail a picture of a rural farming family mostly dependant on selling butter drawing wood and dealing with the dairy cattle and calves. Lillie never fails to mention the weather her daily chores visitors sales of butter etc. and the hundreds of other things a rural wife deals with. Warren while he writes does only a slightly lesser job and it is very interesting to read side by side the same day's entries. Between the two there is a great deal of commercial and economic information of the times genealogical data and a great deal of the local events including births deaths accidents etc. relative to the Oneida Utica Waterville and Graycraft New York areas.
