Some small spots on the title Note: The Roman historian Titus Livius 59 B.C. - 17 A.D wrote a huge and immensely influential history of Rome 'From the foundation of the City' Ab Urbe Condita libri in 142 books. Of this work only 35 books are still extant. Of the rest remain only fragments and summaries. He 'set himself to give Rome a history that in conception and style should be worthy of her imperial rise and greatness' OCD 2nd ed. p. 615. The later Roman historian Tacitus declared that Livy was 'brilliant for eloquence and credibility'. Annales 4.43 Livy was the source and model of many classical medieval and later historians and writers like Lucan for his 'Civil War' for Einhard's biography of Charlemagne for Petrarch's 'Africa' for Shakespeare's 'Rape of Lucretia' etc. Other humanist historians wrote the history of their state to equal what Livy had done for Rome. The English philosopher 'Francis Bacon declared Livy the best historian who provided models for behavior Advancement of Learning 1605' The Classical Tradition Cambr. Mass. 2010 p. 537 § The Dutch translator of this Livius of 1646 is Jan Hendriksz. Glazemaker 1619/20-1682 who was a professional translator ánd glazier. Glazemaker means glazier If there were no texts to translate Glazemaker worked as a glazier in the firm of his stepfather. He started his career translating popular literature later he specialized in philosophy. He translated e.g. Descartes and Spinoza for the Dutch market. He mainly translated from Latin and French. His knowledge of Greek seems to have been insufficient to translate properly. So he must have used also Latin and French examples for his Greek authors. Choosing words to translate he was a purist and always chose pure Dutch terms so enriching the Dutch vocabulary. He was not a scholar nor a humanist virtuoso. To make some money he had to translate a lot and fast. His hastiness was the cause of some sloppiness. Dupleix 'Histoire Romaine depuis la fondation de Rome' 3 volumes Paris 1638-1643 At the end of Livy's work after p. 622 Glazemaker has added as continuation again a considerable part of Dupleix' work. This part runs from from 167 B.C. when Livy ends till the death of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. The continuation starts on page 170 chapitre 9 livre 20 in volume two of Dupleix' 'Histoire Romaine'. As a replacement of the the lost second decade Glazemaker offers his translation of the p. 643-717 chapitre 5 livre 12 - livre XIII of Dupleix' historical work. § Glazemaker is not mentioned on the title-page. His name however occurs on the half title preceding the continuation of Dupleix. As the writer of the preface Aan de lezer tells the reader that he supplements lost parts of Livy with Dupleix he cannot be any other than Glazemaker. ‎BALTIMORE MARYLAND MD SPARROWS POINT MARYLAND 1857. On offer are an original interesting pair 2 of 1857 manuscript letters October 29th then November 9th handwritten by Lizzie to her brother Thomas J Morris in New York City. The letters are breezy intimate familial notes that are peppered with the concerns of the day: "You have probably learned through the newspapers that we had another stormy election mob withstanding all the measures that were taken to prevent it. We had not however any trouble in our neighborhood". "Everyone is talking about the approaching election which is next Wednesday expecting a most dreadful time but I see in the morning's paper that the governor has ordered the militia out that day to preserve the peace. I hope they will succeed." The seriousness of her concerns are well founded. We quote from an online magazine called Humanities in an article by Martin Ford we learn of the wild abandon election brought to the neighborhoods of Baltimore: Not surprisingly the disparity in votes among wards was stark. In the 1856 election 1013 Democratic votes were tallied in the immigrant 8th Ward home of the Irish Bloody Eights while only one Democratic vote was counted in the Plug Ugly's 20th. Know Nothing candidate Millard Fillmore got 21 percent of the vote nationally but 55 percent in Maryland the only state he carried largely due to the Baltimore vote. Not content merely to subtract from the opposition vote the nativist gangs also sought to multiply votes for their own candidates. A favorite strategy was "cooping." For days before an election Scharf writes "honest gentlemen as well as unfortunate wretches" many of them immigrants would be abducted by the gangs and transported to cellars or sheds-"coops"-where they would be held under conditions described by one victim as "disgusting and horrible in the extreme." Sometimes forced to drink large quantities of whiskey the hapless captives were invariably robbed and beaten before being transported to the polls in small groups to vote and vote again. Peter Fitzpatrick testified that he was kept in Plug Ugly Raz Levy's coop where he recalled that a fellow captive a German immigrant "had a large beard and Crab Ashby took a candle and . . . burnt it off." An original print used to illustrate the Gazette du bon ton one of the most attractive and influential 20th century fashion magazines featuring the talents of French artists and other contributors from the burgeoning Art Deco movement. A celebrated fashion magazine established in 1912 by Lucien Vogel La Gazette du bon ton appeared until 1925 with a hiatus from 1915 to 1920 due to the war the editor-in-chief having been called up for service. It consisted of 69 issues printed in only 2000 copies each and notably illustrated with 573 color plates and 148 sketches of the models of the great designers. Right from the start this sumptuous publication “was aimed at bibliophiles and fashionable society” Françoise Tétart-Vittu “La Gazette du bon ton” in Dictionnaire de la mode 2016 and was printed on fine vergé paper using a type cut specially for the magazine by Georges Peignot known as Cochin later used in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints were made using stencils heightened in colors some highlighted in gold or palladium. The story began in 1912 when Lucien Vogel a man of the world involved in fashion he had already been part of the fashion magazine Femina decided with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff – the sister of Jean creator of Babar – to set up the Gazette du bon ton subtitled at the time: “Art fashion frivolities.” Georges Charensol noted the reasoning of the editor-in-chief: “’In 1910’ he observed ‘there was no really artistic fashion magazine nothing representative of the spirit of the time. My dream was therefore to make a luxury magazine with truly modern artists…I was assured of success because when it comes to fashion no country on earth can compete with France.’” “Un grand éditeur d’art. Lucien Vogel” in Les Nouvelles littéraires no. 133 May 1925. The magazine was immediately successful not only in France but also in the United States and Latin America. At first Vogel put together a team of seven artists: André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt as well as eventually his friends from school and the School of Fine Arts like George Barbier Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Charles Martin. Other talented people soon came flocking to join the team: Guy Arnoux Léon Bakst Benito Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi Chas Laborde Jean-Gabriel Domergue Raoul Dufy Édouard Halouze Alexandre Iacovleff Jean Émile Laboureur Charles Loupot Chalres Martin Maggie Salcedo. These artist mostly unknown when Lucien Vogel sought them out later became emblematic and sought-after artistic figures. It was also they who worked on the advertising drawings for the Gazette. The plates put the spotlight on and celebrate dresses by seven designers of the age: Lanvin Doeuillet Paquin Poiret Worth Vionnet and Doucet. The designers provided exclusive models for each issue. Nonetheless some of the illustrations are not based on real models but simply on the illustrator’s conception of the fashion of the day. The Gazette du bon ton was an important step in the history of fashion. Combining aesthetic demands with the physical whole it brought together – for the first time – the great talents of the artistic literary and fashion worlds; and imposed through this alchemy a completely new image of women: slender independent and daring which was shared by the new generation of designers including Coco Chanel Jean Patou Marcel Rochas and so on… Taken over in 1920 by Condé Montrose Nast the Gazette du bon ton was an important influence on the new layout and aesthetics of that “little dying paper” that Nast had bought a few years earlier: Vogue. Lloyd in this letter writes his uncle asking for funds and is unable to find other employment. Lloyd had apparently been working for Rufus W. Bailey the American Colonization Society Agent in Virginia. Lloyd writes: "I hardly know how to begin writing but I am situated so that I cannot move at all. I have tried to get a situation here in place of the place but unsuccessfully and all because I am not a good writer & Bookkeeper. I feel very anxious indeed to get back to New York but Mr. Baily has no money to pay my expenses back and can not let me have it for 6 or 8 weeks. He is about sending a Ship of Emigrants to Liberia and is getting them down the Vally sic as fast as possible but they will not be ready to sail before October 1st. He then expects to have $ 1000 at last and more if he sends over 100 emigrants. He is obliged to pay all their expenses until they go and told me yesterday he could not possibly let me have a dollar until his ship has sailed." During the Liberian emigrant voyage discussed in this letter which sailed November 1 1851 on the Morgan Dix approximately 37 of the 149 passengers died on board ship or during the acclimation period in Africa. <br /> books‎

The firm of Davenport Manufacturers to Their Majesties of China Earthenware and Glass had its origins in the late eighteenth century and for nearly one hundred years at various factories at Longport in Staffordshire it was one of the leading potteries in Britain along with Minton Spode/Copeland and Wedgwood with an export trade that was as large as any in the country. Terrence A. Lockett and Geoffrey A. Godden have had access to contemporary documents and have studied the vast amount of new material that has come to light in recent years. A full chapter has been devoted to the Davenport glasswares and the early porcelain wares earthenwares and stonewares as well as the blue-printed and multi-colored printed wares of the period 1794-c1844 are the subject of detailed examination. A business career in lumber and railroads provided the resources for collecting. Ayer donated his collection of 49000 volumes pamphlets manuscripts and maps on the American Indian to Chicago's Newberry Library. Endpapers restored the title page has been reinforced with two small pieces of paper on the verso. Lodovico Dolce 1508-1568 Venetian man of letters and humanist worked on editions of Italian classical texts Dante Petrarch. in collaboration with the publisher Ferrari and renewed the genre which bears his mark. He translated the Metamorphoses into Italian and wrote several dialogues including one on painting featuring Vasari and Aretino and another on the properties of colors. The Inscription Occurred Just Before Roosevelt Left Office. " In 1888 Loeb Was Elected Official Stenographer Of The Lower House Of The New York Legislature And Over The Years Gained Political Experience And Acquaintances Serving As Private Secretaries To The Lieutenant-Governor President Pro Tempore Of The State Senate Speaker Of The Assembly And To 1891 Candidate For Governor Jacob Sloat Fassett. When Theodore Roosevelt Became Governor Of New York He Was Appointed As One Of His Official Stenographers. His Ability To Do Things Without Specific Instructions And His Familiarity With Public Officials And Affairs Attracted Roosevelt's Notice And Leob Became His Private Secretary In 1899. On September 14 1901 On The Night President William Mckinley Was Assassinated Loeb Met Vice President Roosevelt During His Dash To Buffalo At The North Creek New York Train Station Delivering The Telegram From Secretary Of State John Hay Announcing Mckinley's Death At 2:15 That Morning. In The White House He Served As Assistant Secretary To The President From 1901 To 1903 And Then Succeeded George B. Cortelyou As Secretary To The President In 1903 Where He Stayed By The President's Side For The Rest Of Roosevelt's Time In Office. Loeb Was A Very Intimate Aide To Roosevelt And Was One Of The Era's Most Powerful Figures. As Roosevelt's Principal Advisor He Participated In Shaping Policy And Solving Political Problems. Acting As The President's Public Alter-Ego He Unofficially Became The Nation's First Presidential Press Secretary As Loeb Was Empowered To Speak For The President And Reporters Were Able To Contact Him Twenty-Four Hours A Day. Known To Those In The Press As "Stonewall Loeb" He Controlled Access To The President In An Unprecedented Fashion Dealing With The Queries Of Most Of The President's Visitors Without Their Ever Having To Disturb Him. When Roosevelt Took To Learning Judo Then Known As Jiu-Jitsu From Yamashita Yoshiaki In March And April 1904 And Trained In The White House Loeb And The President's Japanese Naval Attaché Isamu Takeshita Were His Training Partners. Roosevelt Once Described Him As "The Best Secretary That Any President Ever Had". In Addition In His Own Autobiography Roosevelt Stated That Loeb Was Responsible For Starting The Investigations Into The Frauds Committed By The Sugar Trust In New York's Custom House. He Also Played A Part In Aligning The 1908 Republican National Convention Behind The Nomination Of William H. Taft. In January 1908 He Brought It To The President's Attention That There Was No Front-Runner For The Republican Nomination To Succeed Him And That Many Republican Leaders In The United States Congress Were Under The Suspicion That Roosevelt Had Every Intention Of Running For A Third Term. Leob Urged The President That He Would Only Be Able To Sustain The Credibility Of His Pledge Not To Run Again By Endorsing A Candidate. Loeb Told Roosevelt That Any Nominee Could Win If Only He Would Back Him. In Response Roosevelt Said That He Would Favor Elihu Root And Authorized Loeb At That Moment To Go To See Root And Make The Offer Of His Endorsement. Root Then Secretary Of State Was Astonished By The Endorsement But Did Not Accept It Because He Judged Himself To Be Unelectable. Loeb Reported Back To The President That Same Day To Report On His Meeting. Roosevelt Accepted Root's Decision And Told Loeb That His Choice Then Was William Howard Taft Saying That He Had The Experience To Run The Government.
