Autograph Letter Signed to the Painter Hortense Haudebourt-Lescot
Paris 1832. Fine. Between two Foremost Women Portraitists Paris s. d. 1832 12.20 x 18.60 cm un bifeuillet Autograph letter signed by painter Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun addressed to historical painter and portraitist Hortense Haudebourt-Lescot. Two pages in black ink on a bifolium. Autograph address of Mme Haudebourt 19 rue Rochefoucauld on verso of second leaf. Usual horizontal folds tear without damage to the text on the second leaf due to the wax seal. A bibliographer's note in blue pencil on the verso of the last leaf. Vigée Le Brun likely wrote this letter in 1832 upon the death of their mutual friend Guillaume Guillon Lethière a renowned painter born to a free person of color in Guadeloupe and mentor to Hortense Haudebourt: ""I cannot express Madame how touched and grateful I am for your kind remembrance. The drawing by M. Le Thier which you so kindly sent to me this morning moved me deeply sparking both my gratitude for you and my sorrow for him"". Both Vigée Le Brun and Haudebourt-Lescot enjoyed immense fame during their lifetime. The latter was especially in demand for her portraits of high society in addition to neo-classical history scenes. Their destinies reflect each other in many ways: Vigée Le Brun was Marie-Antoinette's official portraitist and Haudebourt followed in her footsteps receiving the honors of the Duchess of Berry the figurehead of legitimist monarchism. This exceptional letter testifies to their shared attachment to the painter Lethière whom Vigée Le Brun had frequented during her exile from France in Rome where he was a resident at the French Académie des Beaux-Arts. Their paths crossed again in Naples and she left in her Souvenirs the anecdote of their memorable ascent of Mount Vesuvius: ""M. Lethière a very skilled history painter was an enthusiast of the volcano. I remember that day was Candlemas. We set off at about three o'clock with two of Mr Lethière's friends. The weather was fine but when we reached the mountain a fog rose up so thickly that it looked like enormous smoke. Everything disappeared before our eyes . Finally the fog lifted revealing the sea and the surrounding islands to the horizona vision of unparalleled beauty. . We went back up to watch the sunset. Its brilliant disc with its immense rays was reflected in the sea. We were ecstatic at the sight of this superb painting and everything that framed it. We returned to Naples with our sketches. Mr Lethière had drawn a picture of me coming down the mountain on my donkey."" As for Haudebourt she followed Lethière to Italy in 1808 after his appointment as director of the Academy in Rome an exceptional trip for a woman at a time when the Prix de Rome did not allow female applicants. She stayed there until 1816 and made friends with the greatest artists of the time notably Ingres and Canova. Her work as a painter allowed her to emancipate herself upon her return to France; she then rented a studio and founded a highly reputed salon in her hotel rue Rochefoucauld - to which this letter is addressed. Another resident of the flourishing Nouvelle Athènes district Vigée Le Brun frequented her colleague's weekly artistic and intellectual gatherings alongside ""painters Picot Drölling and the sculptor David d'Angers . composers Rossini and Auber playwrights Arnault and Scribe and famous actors such as Talma Mademoiselle Mars and Mademoiselle Duchesnois"" Paul Menoux. Probably after the death of their friend Vigée Le Brun received the drawing by Lethière mentioned in this letter: ""I shall be very happy to thank you in person . I will receive you both with joy and eagerness because I have long wanted to see you again. Please accept Madam the assurance of the good feelings you have inspired in me for life."" Precious and probably unpublished record of the bond between two immense artists among the rare women to make a living from their art in the early 19th century. We gra unknown

MACON GEORGIA GA BIBB COUNTY. Good. 1928. On offer is a charming original 1928 manuscript diary handwritten by Loulie D. Quinn sometimes Quin b. about 1857 who lived in Macon Bibb County Georgia and was 71 years old when she wrote this diary and lived with her son Hugh her daughter Helen and her grandchildren after being widowed a few years before. A very sweet lady who loved animals had a charming sweet manner and much compassion for people and animals alike. She never has an unkind word to say even through all the trials she faces. She writes about many things at times she is sick and stays upstairs in her room and she talks about the people who visit her her family friends the weather and of course the latest news. She says she doesn't know how many more mothers days she might have left and that she feels she hasn't done much in her life. She talks about her son Hugh who goes out of town to work and how much she misses and worries about him about her grandchildren and what they are up to about her little goldfish's water freezing and then them dying but Hugh brings her a new one about the little dog Julie getting hit by a car but is okay and all stove up the next day and her grand daughters puppy getting run over and killed and how much it upsets her. Hugh brings Loulie a little six week old kitten who she names Fluff and how Fluff wakes her up to feed her about going on vacation with her family about a Dr. in town taking poison and dying in his office while someone was with him. She writes about her precious son Louis dying of malaria and how much it hurts her. Her daughter picks up the diary and on one page she writes about how her mother took to her bed and how many people came to visit her mother and how kind they were to her during her time of grief. She eventually gets out of bed and does better but is still heartbroken about her son's death. The diary 7" X 4" and has about 286 days with entries. It is in fair condition some pages are dry and brittle and there are a few small holes and tears but nothing that interferes with the writing which is written mostly in pencil and legible. If as we have explained above there are titles listed that were published years after the first edition of this one; it is not the First Edition. Author Maud Hart Lovelace 1892-1980 is best known and beloved for her Betsy-Tacy Series of children's books. This is the seventh volume in the series. From jacket: "As cheerful as a cup of tea and ten times as stimulating is the is spirited account of Betsy Ray's junior year at Deep Valley High. Those were the days when the automobile was a "horseless carriage" and a lady's hat a substantial article for protecting her head! But different though dress and customs were the heart of teen-age girls was the same as today and their problems and aspirations identical. How to ensnare masculine hearts specifically Joe Willard with this blond good looks and intriguing air of self-reliance is of course Betsy's primary concern." Price clipped jacket has initials and a stray pencil mark on the inside flap and is quite worn with significant edgewear chipping including a small chip missing from jacket spine and a tear that runs almost the entire length of the back of jacket spine. An Oration Delivered April 2d 1771 at the Request of the Inhabitants of the Town of Boston; to Commemorate the Bloody Tragedy of the Fifth of March.
Boston: Printed by Edes and Gill by the Order of the Town of Boston 1771. First edition of the first <span class="match">Boston</span> <span class="match">Massacre</span> oration; a classic of the Revolutionary period. Octavo bound in three quarter morocco morocco spine label lettered in gilt. In near fine condition. American Antiquarian Society stamp to the half-title page. Rare. On March 5 1770 British Captain Preston and eight British soldiers brought to trial on the charge of murdering five Bostonians that evening were defended by young lawyer John Adams later Vice-President and President of the United States assisted by Josiah Quincy Jr. This unpopular defense Adams rightly regarded as "one of the most gallant generous manly and disinterested actions of his whole life." In observance of the first anniversary of the tragedy though not until April 2 1771 was delivered the first of a series of annual patriotic speeches known as "the Boston Massacre Orations." These speeches were contemporaneously printed. John Adams later wrote: "These orations were read I had almost said by everybody that could read and scarcely ever with dry eyes. They have now been continued for forty-five years. Adams counted in the annual Fourth of July Orations which began in Boston in 1783. Will you read them all They were not long continued in their original design; but other gentlemen with other views had influence enough to obtain a change from 'standing armies' to 'feelings which produced the Revolution'. Of these forty-five orations I have read as many as I have seen. They have varied with all the changes of our politics. They have been made the engine of bringing forward to public notice young gentlemen of promising genius whose connections and sentiments were tolerable to the prevailing opinions of the moment." Lovell a Boston schoolmaster was one of the staunchest of the local patriots. After the Battle of Bunker Hill he was arrested by the British for spying and was sent a prisoner to Halifax. Following his exchange he became a member of the Continental Congress 1777 where he was a supporter of Gates and one of the harshest critics of Washington. On personal letterhead Lowden thanks this admirer for "your request for an autographed copy of my radio address of April 7. It gives me pleasure to enclose you herewith autographed copy." Large full signature. The address is present titled "An Independent Judiciary the Bulwark of the People's Liberties" 8vo wrappers bound along top with black cloth tape 20pp rectos only. Near fine. On the front wrapper the governor pens "With the compli- / ments of / Frank O Lowden" huge and bold in black ink. Subitled "An address delivered by Frank O. Lowden over the Blue Network of the National Broadcasting Company on Wednesday evening April 7 1937" this speech attacks President Roosevelt's 1937 "Judicial Procedures Reform Bill" or "court-packing plan" legislation that would have allowed him to enlarge the court and push through his New Deal initiatives. Fry mentions seeing the Queen of the Pacific steamer for which he had a ticket but it sank before his trip storms floods hunting killing rabbits at Long Beach Woodwards Gardens woman fighting on a train and friends passing away. Absolutely super Western Americana for collectors and historians of western travel. After this sensational trip Fry uses the book with the latest date being 1903. 1948 - 1949 SUPERB ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING LIFE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN HANDWRITTEN BY A KEEN EYED ERUDITE WAC LIEUTENANT
OCCUPIED JAPAN TOKYO. Good. 1948. On offer is a super original 1948 - 1949 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified WAC Women's Army Corps while she was stationed in Occupied Japan. The book proper is from 1945 has an ownership name stamped in gilt: James E. Barlow perhaps a father or brother It appears she was a lieutenant in the Civil Intelligence Service but was not happy with her job as a pool typist. She had been promised a different position and tried several times to be transferred but that proved to be very difficult. Eventually she worked in the Motion Picture Division. The writer begins her service with travel on Oct 15 1948 on the North Coast Limited to Seattle. After several days of rail travel and a stay in Seattle the author left for Tokyo on Oct 26 aboard the General M. M. Patrick. She proves to be an excellent diarist making detailed descriptions of the people she met her surroundings and intimate thoughts of post War Japan and the effort to rebuild its society. She has many unique insights into the effort given she was an officer in the typing pool but hobnobbing with high society. This is true throughout the journal. Her ocean voyage was not pleasant she was seasick and described the terrible storm they encountered and the pitching of the ship which at times was dangerous. Here are some snippets: Oct 20 the talk of the train was a drunk who seemed almost crazy "alcoholic psycho" an ex-army nurse & bride said - & she once worked in Norwich Conn Hospital with the insane. I ignored him so he told me I was horrible - He'd asked "Lemme talk to you wouldn't you like to haf me talk to you". The dining room steward threatened to put him off the train & would have done it he was so loud and incoherent & a pest - but he took reprimands so politely and apologetically & no one of the passengers would complain that they didn't do it. Even the Lt Col who had been his drinking buddy tried & tried to shush him. Oct 28 When I tried to go down the hall to bathe later the man across the hall from me sat on the bed nearly naked beer bottles around. I got Kathy to watch me in - luckily cause he tried to get friendly. Later knocked on my door and telephoned too. Glad he checked out very early. Nov 4 R.K. in our stateroom is the overbearing type of N Yawk - - - - with a greatly exaggerated opinion of herself. And she has a sweater with Hubba-Hubba above and below each breast and across the back. Nov 11 I didn't meet Helen Gibson's Major Kelly. The last I saw of the "leech" from Boston she was snuggled up pressed against one of the army officers on our ship and twisting a button on his chest & rolling her "bedroom" eyes at him as Lana calls them - oh yes she had on her sexy shoes of course. I wonder where she'll wind up and how." The author is involved with a man named Bob who was also in the army and stationed in Japan. They seem to be social with fairly high ranking officers and Japanese private citizens of some standing often visiting their homes. They shop quite a bit in the Japanese markets comparing prices to those in the PX. They seemed to be interested in purchasing items for their value rather than souvenirs. She wrote about the army and much of what she had to say was not very complimentary - the red tape inefficiency bad verdict in an army trial pay reduction etc. On one occasion she saw General MacArthur: Nov 18 "On my way back I saw a crowd gathered to watch MacArthur leave the Dai Ielia Bldg - it was another half hour before he came out but it was fun. All over quickly and away he went in a big black limousine - a few MPs clicking heels and Jap guards keeping crowd back and Jap street sweepers getting leaves and dirt swept up in time. As a man beside me said the "ceremony" is very important here and is less than any other country would do in similar circumstances. Yet it was "God descending from heaven and riding off in his chariot"" The author made every effort to explore Japan whenever she had the chance. For some reason she wanted very badly to pat Hirohito's white horse and she finally managed to do so. She often mentions the damage from the bombing and her descriptions are filled with the Japanese culture and customs she observed. Her detailed entries are sometimes so long it is difficult to transcribe one here. This is an abbreviated entry of her comments on the handling of Japanese sewage. A bit gross and not what you'd find in a travel guide: Dec 10 "Sometime I'll have to get on the subject of honey buckets - they're just unavoidable in Japan - wooden and luckily covered they are carted in most anything but usually a low flat affair drawn by a horse or bullock - maybe 10 or 15 to a cart. The man walks along outside - he "cheats" if he rides as it's against the law.there's always a stream of them along the main thoroughfare. At the ends of small side streets are frequently a cluster of honey buckets probably set out as we would set out our garbage to be collected.of course we have modern plumbing such as it is but probably most of Japan doesn't and this is the sewage system except when men and children use the sidewalk or open sewers.often there's not much odor but sometimes the stench is horrible.and the farmer carries a bucket plus a long pole with a dipper on the end of it and he ladles out the contents in his garden.we saw a woman with a honey bucket taking out the contents by hand and scattering it in a garden - we think and hope it was earth she was dealing with that way." The author wrote about her voyage to Japan and the first few months after her arrival. After that the entries become more sporadic with long gaps between entries. She seemed to write when she had the urge after a special sight seeing trip event social gathering or when she just wanted to vent or put her opinion on a subject down on paper. All of it is very interesting and the author presents an insightful and personal look at post-war Japan and the army occupation. There are about 123 handwritten pages altogether. SOUTH PACIFIC PHILIPPINES JAPAN. Good. 1945. On offer is a rare first-hand record of a naval officer's presence at two significant WWII battles. Labelled "War Diary I and II these volumes are official United States Navy War Diaries from WWII. They are in excellent condition. They each measure 8 inches by 5 inches and contain 196 pages. The covers bindings and pages are all in good condition. The first diary is 100% complete and the second diary is about 11% complete. They also contain wartime Japanese currency and other ephemera. A war diary is a regularly updated official record kept by military units of their activities during wartime. The purpose of these diaries is to both record information which can later be used by the military to improve its training and tactics as well as to generate a detailed record of units' activities for future use by historians. The author of the diaries is Byron F Doenges. Doenges was born in 1922 in Fort Wayne IN. In WWII he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Navy Reserve. He was assigned to USS LST 1033. Landing Ship Tank LST or tank landing ship were ocean-going ships built during World War II to support amphibious operations by carrying tanks vehicles cargo and landing troops directly onto shore. LST-1033 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theatre and participated in the assault and occupation of Iwo Jima in February 1945 and the assault and occupation of Okinawa from April through June 1945. Following the war she performed occupation duty in the Far East and saw service in China until mid-July. She was re-designated LSTH-1033 on 15 September 1945. The ship was decommissioned on 1 August 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 28 August that same year. LST- 1033 earned two battle stars for World War II service. After his war service Doenges remained in the USNR rising to the rank of Lt Commander before retiring in 1946. Following his war service he earned an MBA and a PhD. He taught and worked in several universities before entering public service in 1965. He served as economic adviser to the Governor of Oregon before moving to Washington to join the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. He served in the agency as Deputy Assistant Director chief of economics and special studies division and finally as senior economic adviser. Doenges passed away in 2006 at the age of 83. His War Diaries documents the ship's journey and participation in the assault on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. And damage assessment of Nagasaki after the atomic bomb had been dropped the repatriation of Japanese soldiers and the transport of Chinese Nationalist troops. The diaries end with his orders to return to the United States. At 0837 underway from Pearl Harbor Hawaii to Eniwetok Marshall Islands operating in Task Unit S1.42.2 via Route Mary. 1300 formed sixty ship convoy with Commander Phil Neikum riding DD LITTLE in command. This ship is in third column from right second ship in column. This convoy is one of 3 similar convoys which is to merge with similar convoys which are to merge at Saipan Marianas to form Task Force 51 for the eventual capture of Iwo Jima . Jan 23 1945 At 0300 sighted salvo flashes and star shells originated by navy fleet units which were bombarding and shelling Iwo Jima volcanoes. 0500 formed cruising disposition # 5 made of 28 LST'S of tractor groups Able and Baker; this ship 14th ship in left hand column. All ships steaming in preparation to line up in single column 5500 yards to seaward of southern beaches of Iwo Jima. 0620 Suribaichi Yama came into view ; the weather was perfect with clear atmosphere At 0741 formed Task Unit 53.3.3 as we came into position before Green Beach #1 .All marines and amphitracks left ship by 0754. . At 0825 aft port pontoon launched to be used as casualty evacuation barge At 0930 this vessel reached its station as casualty ship 4300 yards to seaward Green Beach # 1 Iwo Jima. All while heavy shelling and bombardments by flash units continued while dive-bombers continued strafing and bombing attacks on enemy positions. At 0937 first casualties transported to ship via LCVP's and LCM's from beaches. . Feb 19 1945 Manoeuvring in casualty wound station position 4300 yards to seaward of Green Beach Iwo Jima volcanoes. Casualties close to come aboard after sundown; during daylight hours however when boats can get into beach many casualties were transported to ship. During the night of the 20th approximately ninety Marines remained on tank deck because no boats available or because the APA's would not take them. This is a sad condition because this ship does not have the real hospital facilities an APA has and hence many wounds may have been infected due to delay. The terrific fighting and heavy casualties were in evidence continually. Fleet units and carrier-based aircraft continued to bombard island. 1555 and 1907 enemy aircraft reported in vicinity however none were visible. Feb 20 1945 Anchored as before in Kerawa- Kaikyo Kerawa Retto Okinawa Gunto. 0310 Flash Red alert yellow; heavy enemy air attacks reported at Okinawa Shiwa. 0312 to 0635 exercised at general quarters. No enemy planes or anti aircraft fire sighted in this area. Smoke coverage of this ship was very poor. 0836 to 0851 exercise at general quarters 1047 first casualties arrived wounded from USS Nevada. 1221 underway to shift berths. 1248 anchored in berth K-90 Kerawa- Kaikyo- Kreama Retto Okinawa Gunto. . 1520 & at 1522 the Control became Yellow. Many enemy aircraft reported in vicinity.1630 USS LST 447 preceding from Okinawa to Kerawa Retto and just ready to enter channel was suicided upon by a low flying enemy fighter The ship was hit amidships and a terrific explosion was observed for we were just a little more than a mile north of the beleaguered ship. All ships in vicinity opened fire. At 1640 all hands were seen abandoning the 447. Also at 1640 tea more enemy fighters approached port beam from west side of Fukashi Shima. Again all batteries opened up on attackers one suiciding into SS Logon Victory an ammunition ship and the other demolished by five inch shell hit before it accomplished its mission of diving into another ship. Two friendly F4F's took off the Tulagi CVE 72 at 1645 one was shot down apparently dumping on the other side of the island.1715 first survivors and casualties arrived from LST 447 and the SS Logan Victory; this ships small boat aiding in the rescue work. April 6 1945 Anchored as before. During the mourning ship's officers and army officers aboard went ashore to inspect the Atomic bomb damage at Nagasaki. American troops in force have not yet landed in their area. Got underway for Sasebo Kyushu Japan at 1308 in accordance with CTG 55.7 dispatch dated 200150. . Sept 20 1945 The first of March found LST 1033 skirting the coast of China enroute from Hong Kong to Chaingtao with a load of 832 Chinese troops of the new 1st Nationalist army ship arrived in Chanigtao on March 6 and unloaded immediately. Trip was uneventful. Communist and Nationalist troops were fighting a pitched battle a few miles away while unloading was taking place. Learned that the Chinese first army was completely American equipped however the troops on the whole were very unsanitary. .March 1 1946 . The ship sailed to Shanghai in company with LST's 1046 935 and 96. On 7 March and arrived at the Chinese metropolis on 10 March. However ship did not get into Whangpoo anchorage until 13 March on 15 March ship was notified that she was to load up with 2000 tons of UNRRA food supplies and sail for Hawkow. 1000 miles into the interior to deliver food to starving Chinese.The 1033 was the first LST ever ordered to make a run up the Yangtze River. March 1 to Mar 31 1946 The ephemera includes a 50 Japanese Sen banknote 0.50 Yen. They are part of the withdrawn Japanese Yen banknotes series. The Bank of Japan started issuing these 0.5 Japanese Yen banknotes in 1938. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1945. Also included is a copy of the discharge request on an officer aboard LST 1033 and a draft of Doenges own request for release. This is a thoroughly outstanding documentary record of an American ship and officer in the chaotic last months of WWII and the early days of the Chinese revolution. CAMDEN LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY KY. Good. 1945. On offer is a very interesting end of World War II service manuscript diary handwritten by Lt. Claudius E. Belk 1st Lt. USAF. Unnamed in the book his ownership was confirmed from ephemeral items once associated with the diary. The largish 9 x 6 inch page a day book does not have any entries until July 15th 1945 but after that the book is well filled save for another handful of days. Lt. Belk lives in the Camden part of Louisville Kentucky fills nearly every page he writes on with the details of his life after his service. His first entry on a Sunday seems to confirm when he says upon arriving at church 'Everyone was very friendly to me'. Belk is on an extended emergency leave from the service but very dedicated to the war effort and he writes what is on the one hand a super home front diary and but also a very detailed history of international events. He writes daily reports on the international war situation which seem to be a coalescing of what he reads in the papers but also scuttlebutt from his friends in the Service. He writes of the progress of America and her allies the War in Japan and the rest of the Pacific and the international political situation. Entries make note of or meeting with: a boat trip to 6 Mile Island on the gasoline cruiser 'Miss Jakes' Bowman Field riding in a B-13 flying a B-47 Truman and Stalin entries seeing the launch of the USS Corry chilling entries regarding the final months of the war in Japan and the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki meeting Col. Monroe Johnson and then the curious entries such as: 'the whiskey situation is critical here in Camden' with a few more alcohol related entries showing a fascination or importance to the man. The book includes a few ephemeral items including a photo. SOUTH PACIFIC PHILIPPINES ABOARD THE USS SANGAMON. Good. 1943. On offer is a sensational group of World War II relics including original manuscript diaries 2 maps photographs and related ephemera handwritten and compiled by Lieutenant Commander Robert Manning Carr a senior medical officer on the USS Sangamon from September 1943 until November 10 1944. Casual research finds Carr was a native of Junction City Kansas and a graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago. The Sangamon was an escort carrier providing fuel and planes for support of the fleet and men on the ground. The ship took part in many battles including Marshall Islands Guam The Philippine Sea and The Battle for Leyte Gulf. The first diary begins September 17th 1943 and ends June 29th 1944 while the second diary begins June 30th 1944 and ends on November 10th 1944. There are nearly daily entries. The doctor deals with common things influenza appendicitis and then of course the more gruesome occurrences war. Many of the injuries the soldiers survived were terrible burns from the aircraft fuel either from accidents on the flight deck one famous one that the doctor actually saw from the air as he was flying with one of the other pilots or from Japanese Suicide bombers. His angst at treating these soldiers is evident throughout. He also talks of burials at sea and the capture of the first Japanese pilot who tried to fly into their ship he was treated and then sent to the brig even though the doctor thought he should stay in sick bay. Historians and researchers and collectors of the American war effort in the Pacific will have a treasure trove of his keen personal observations as the doctor describes many of the famous battles the Sangamon and her crew took part in. The diaries are crammed full and the included ephemera such as copies of telegraphs from the high command congratulating the crew on a job well done and a good number 25 8" by 10" glossy photographs taken of the destroyed cities ports and villages after the occupation. A few of them are also quite gruesome which all add depth and breadth to the narrative. The journals end abruptly on Nov 10 1944. The USS Sangamon was eventually hit by a Kamikaze and badly damaged. It was being repaired when the war in the Pacific ended. The ship was sold and eventually scrapped. In all this is a very intimate look at life on an active ship during wartime from the key vantage point and perspective of a senior medical officer. Unnumbered but almost 150 pages in all. On offer is a sensational original manuscript relic of Victorian times being the 1845 - 1855 handwritten diary and journal of a British officer as he settles in to retirement in London something he has wished for and who details his life and times with family and friends in great detail. Lt. Col H. Mitchell as stated on a front cover sticker 'Diary of Lt. Col. H. Mitchell 1845-1855' appears to be an old India hand keeping up with the gossip writing letters to Government meeting boats with friends and acquaintances returning from India. This intelligent and observant man a Senior Officer with a hint of the rogue allows the reader to see the elements of his life: family politics friends relations all the while there is a back drop of tensions; from the first pages about finances gone wrong especially with the Bank of Australia and how the impact of world politics would also affect his pocket book and also his seemingly unending interest in India. He also copies some verse and there is a most interesting letter copy to the Earl of Ripond regarding India. Here are some snippets: "Jan 1846 How little I have written in 1845! It has not been a fertile year of events it is true beyond the birth of our daughter. The one we are entering upon with I fear be more eventful for it can hardly fail deeply to affect my money affairs either for good or for ill. I find
my incomes amount to 1200 pounds; were misfortunes to befall them I may be reduced to 500 pounds! Were the bank of Australia to recover its prosperity
.and should we be forced into a war with America and it seems difficult to see how the Oregon question can be settled without war so overbearing are the pretensions and the conduct of the Americans my income may be reduced to less than 500 pounds without the house!" He notes in one of the last entries how the Queen saw fit to raise his rank to Colonel and while mostly ceremonial he was quite pleased. FORT LEAVENWORTH KANSAS KS. Good. 1921. On offer is a very unique original manuscript journal and relic of the storied "School of the Line" handwritten by Lt. Colonel George A. Wieczorek while attending the "School of the Line" at Ft. Leavenworth Kansas from September of 1921 to June of 1922. Historians collectors and researchers will note that the 137 page journal was written by a distinguished soldier who was awarded the decoration of The Purple Heart for his meritorious service in France where he was wounded during the Meuse-Argonne offensive on September 26 1918. He is even mentioned in an article on the Meuse-Argonne offensive. There are in fact quite a few military articles written by Colonel Wieczorek including one called "Technical Training for Line Officers in the Use and Construction of Military Lines of Information." The cover is very very worn in fact the outside spine is all torn and falling apart but the pages and binding are fine. Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: School of the Line: "The experience of World War I greatly influenced the Officer education system established in the United States in the postwar period. The school system was re-established in 1919 to address many of the specific problems which emerged during the war. Foremost among these problems were handling large armies in the field and preparing the nation for war. The School of the Line and the General Staff School at Ft. Leavenworth prepared officers to staff and command large units. The Army War College re-emerged in 1919 as the General Staff College in Washington D.C. This institution was to prepare officers for duty with the General Staff of the Army. At the core of this program was the single problem of preparing the army for war. In 1919 this meant mobilization and war plans. At Ft. Leavenworth officers of appropriate rank attended the School of the Line. This course devoted one year to the study of brigade and division operations. Selected officers then went on to the General Staff School also of one-year duration. In the second year students focused on corps and armies. Beginning in 1922 the General Staff School added the study of army groups to its program of instruction. The scope of these studies was impressive. On offer is a fascinating manuscript relic of one man's service in the United States Navy from pre World War I with notes to 1942 handwritten by Lieutenant Commander William G. Conrad USN Nov 1889 - 29 May 1966. The diary served the author in two ways: The 102 page diary/journal portion of this notebook details the years of 1908 through his final entry of 16 Sept. 1919. Beyond the diary Conrad lists his ships and their movements 8 August 1908 to 20 October 1942. We learn that he enlisted in the Navy on March 11 1908 and on March 19 they "arrived at Newport R.I." "8/1 received actg' app as Yeo 2 Cl"; "8/8 transferred from Newport to U.S.S. Mississippi arrived at Boston 11:30 pm." Very detailed he included arrival and departure dates and the locations were varied - including not all listed Cuba England France Panama Portugal Spain Gibraltar Azores Nicaragua Puerto Rico Honolulu Pearl Harbor Balboa Bermuda Scotland and many ports within the USA. Other entries include men lost sea dates names and causes of death. Still other entries included more historical information. Here are some snippets: "12/5/1908 - marines were transferred from all ships of the navy by an act of congress." "1/25/1909 - up anchor at 2:00 am for Havana Cuba & steamed into harbor about 11:00 am o'clock just as the Maine did 11 years ago." "11/11/1918 - word received today that the armistice with Germany was signed at 5:00 am which of course concludes the war. The receipt of the word at 1 pm was the cause of much rejoicing and blowing of whistles by all ships in the harbor." "5/17/1919 - navy seaplanes nc1 and 4 landed on Fayal Azores island on attempted cross-Atlantic flight. The nc3 which started with impedition was lost. L. Hawker British Navy started yesterday from St Johns for an aerial flight to Ireland." Note: Harry George Hawker was a pioneering aviator. In 1919 hawker with McKenzie grieve attempted to cross the Atlantic in a flight to win a 10000 pound prize offered by the "daily mail". On offer is a superb significant manuscript relic of British military campaigns and expeditions to Africa in the latter half of the 19th Century at Suakim of the Sudan in 1885 and Lagos Nigeria in 1891 being an original diary of the two expeditions handwritten by Lieut. F. J. Davies a member of the distinguished military family based at Elmley Castle Worcestershire and attached to the Grenadier Guards the most elevated being Lt. General Henry Fanshawe Davies most likely F J Davies' father. Davies does a super job relating his life as an officer writing entries some brief others more detailed from the mundane: a cricket match deck football a dance and comments on places en route to Suakim and Lagos to the historically significant eyewitness accounts of Victorian warfare interspersed with lighter moments; descriptions of military engagements and observations on people places and politics with some of the comments being typical of the times but not politically correct today. The first section of the large approximately 9.5 x 8 inch album is related to Suakim the second British expedition following the fall of Khartoum in 1884. The Battle of Hasheen is described in some detail. Davies wrote the account in a different book of over 100 sheets oddly hand numbered starting at page 55 then single digits then through 229 obviously he did not transfer each page he wrote in the earlier book then a newsclipping and photo having been cut and transferred and then glued into this album and it includes a group photograph 200 x 150 mm showing the officers on the expedition. Davies has identified all in pencil below the photo. The Suakim diary dates from February 18th to June 4th and begins when they left England on the SS Australia. football on quarter deck in the afternoon." March 18th "There are rumours we shall go home as soon as Osman Digina is beaten leaving the line regiment to finish the work and cover the railway." March 20th A ten page account of fighting at Hasheen together with a sketch plan. Detailed timings and numbers of casualties. March 29th arrival of SS Iberia with troops from N.S. Wales. "Heard that govt were arming ocean steamers as armed cruisers and that a large number of ships were being commissioned for service in the Baltic." After Suakim and a few blank pages in the album the expedition to Lagos in 1891 begins. This expedition was motivated by action by the Ijeba tribe who were cutting off the residents of the Lagos district from up-country supplies of goods. Lagos had been a British Crown Colony since 1886. The diary runs to about 75 pages and covers the period March 26th to June 28th. The ship used was the British and African Co. SS Cameron. The pages in this sections are somewhat browned around the edges a different paste clearly being used from the Suakim sheets. in every possible costume from a state of nature to a black coat and top hat." The officer of Frontier Police tells Davies of a skirmish. Their opponents "did not belong to any particular tribe but were a collection of bad characters and runaway slaves." "We took in 20 Kroo boys to work the ship - their dress is often very funny - the usually have a stiff billycock hat with heir name written on." 20th April arrival in Lagos. "Seems a healthy place
No official has died here in the last four years." Davies is given charge of a company of Lagos Housas about 40 men. May 16th Preparations for battle - details of force listed. Details of advance terrain and fighting give. The military activity and its aftermath last for about 10 days and are covered in some detail. Accounts of looters being flogged. "I found Col. Scott standing in the courtyard with the 3 Ibadan chiefs lying flat on their stomachs in front of him
if the chiefs' men did not give in their arms at once the chiefs would be hung." Contained in an album 240 x 200 x 40 mm the entries are written on sheets about 185 x 100 mm taken from a perforated notebook and pasted onto the thicker pages of the album. The album itself is sound though with varying degrees of wear to edges and corners. 1877 ORIGINAL AMERICAN NAVAL RELIC OF A 19TH CENTURY SURVEY OF THE MOUTH OF THE MISSISSIPPI HANDWRITTEN BY AN ILL FATED LIEUTENANT
ABOARD THE ENTERPRISE LOUISIANA MISSISSIPPI. Good. 1877. On offer is an interesting 1877 manuscript relic of American naval history handwritten Lt. Lyman G. Spalding a midshipman who was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Navy by President Grant. Spalding was a member of surveying sloop The Enterprise which was assigned to take measurements of the mouth of the Mississippi and this is Spalding's log Vol. 2 with all the details of the survey. BIO NOTES: Spalding came from a prominent Portsmouth Maine family. He was killed in 1881 in Newport Rhode Island when a torpedo exploded prematurely. 32 pages 8.5 x 5.5 in. 1945 ORIGINAL GROUP OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES AND EPHEMERA DEATAILING ONE MAN'S SERVICE IN THE CRITICAL INDIA-BURMA THEATER AND THEN LATER WHIRLWIND TRAVELS AROUND THE GLOBE
NEW DELHI INDIA INDIA-BURMA THEATER. Good. 1945. On offer is an original modest archive of ephemera 15 pieces including a manuscript diary and notebook travel log of an American SOS Officer Services of Supply serving in 1945 in the critical India-Burma Theater. Belonging to and handwritten by Lt. Ray Vekroff the first writings are on a yellow legal pad type paper 27 hand numbered pages torn from the main pad block and folded wherein Ray retrospectively details his background and service. Originally he states that he was a civilian in China and then in China and India for 35 months in the Army. But at the end he explains his desire to return States-side for re-assignment. The second book a flip style notepad begins March 21 1945 at the SOS Headquarters in New Delhi and 10 pages of entries detailing an amazing near circumnavigation voyage with a Trans-America trip twice to boot! aboard a ship steam freighter Cambay. We follow him to Trincomalee Sri Lanka Port Said Gibraltar to Norfolk Washington DC Asheville San Francisco then back and forth to Washington again and finally to end September 13 in Tokyo Japan. 1940s AMAZING ORIGINAL PHOTO DIARY OF ONE US ARMY AIR CORP LIEUTENANT'S SERVICE IN THE AMAZON JUNGLE
BRAZIL AMAZON JUNGLE SOUTH AMERICA. Good. 1942. On offer is a sensational unique original relic of the US Army Air Corp's efforts in the Amazon region of Brazil compiled and maintained Lieutenant R.W. Palmer as identified on the spine of book which is embossed with United States Army logo and reads: Amazon Diary Lt. R.W. Palmer. This massive 10" x 12 1/4" x 2" scrapbook has 105 pages on thick construction like paper and makes for a personal photographic diary of his tour of duty in the Amazon. Photos depict everyday life of the airman and his comrades locals natives people in villages buildings aircraft etc. etc. The photographs range from 5" x 7" and 8" x 10" all black and white save for one color photograph which is dated 1945. Most of the photos appear original but some are real photo postcards. For the most part the photos are tucked into corners some loose but the vast majority present and in good shape. Included are two 2 U.S. ARMY AIR CORP shoulder patches.
