First edition of Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr.'s map of the states of Florida and South Carolina published in Mitchell's New General Atlas Containing Maps Of The Various Countries Of The World Plans Of Cities Etc. Embraced In Forty-Seven Quarto Maps Forming A Series Of Seventy-Six Maps And Plans Together With Valuable Statistical Tables. Philadelphia. One page hand-colored the maps shows the counties and major towns and cities of each state the Gulf of Mexico parts of Louisiana Mississippi Alabama North Carolina with an inset map of Charleston Harbor. In near fine condition. Mitchell worked as a teacher before turning to publishing geography textbooks and maps. He became involved in geography after teaching and realizing that there were so many poor quality geographical resources available to teachers. He moved to Philadelphia Pennsylvania in either 1829 or 1830. He was in Philadelphia when he founded his company. His son S. Augustus Mitchell became owner in 1860. Their publications covered all genres of geography: maps travel guides textbooks and sales of their 24 works reached an annual volume of over 400000 copies unknown

This Polish-born American theatrical photographer set up shop on Broadway in New York in the 1920s and in the '30s developed a compelling portraiture style that made him sought after on the East coast. PS heavy stock 5" X 7" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Undated ca. 1935 head and shoulders portrait of a dark-haired young women in typical Mitchell pose -- shoulders at left but facing rightward and head turned to the right. This subject has her hair parted in the middle and pulled tight; she gazes to her right viewer's left with the barest hint of a Mona Lisa smile. In the dark lower left corner Mitchell signs boldly in his usual white ink making for superb contrast. And in the light area at lower right the unidentified subject signs boldly in black grease pencil: "To Eddie / Tamara" also with superb contrast. While we haven't been able to identify the subject she is most likely an actress or perhaps a ballet figure. "Tamara" suggests Russian and Mitchell did photograph a number of Les Ballets Russes ballerinas. A lovely vintage piece signed by a premiere photographer. unknown

The first of five books in a series by the author "of sketches of village scenes and vividly drawn characters was based upon life in the village of Three Mile Cross" where she lived near Berkshire England. Her Wikipedia biography describes "Her writing has all the charm of unaffected spontaneous humour combined with quick wit and literary skill." Rubbed gray and brown marbled boards with leather corners and leather extended spine. Backstrip of spine is missing and has been replaced with paper strip with typed title which is peeling from front cover. Leather corners are worn and the embossed design on the leather cornes and spine is worn but still visable. Bumped corners. Marbling on outside pages. 292 surprisingly bright pages. Taped repair to front pastedown. Marbled endpapers in front. Poorly blotted name on fep along with penciled booksellers notations. Small area of ink transfer on opposite page and bleed through on fep. Name on title page as well. Minor foxing on pages preceding title page and after last page. We note no foxing in text. It looks like overcut rear endpage has been taped intentionally to marbled endpages and we'll leave that for you to separate. The rear endpage extends just over rear board. Handwritten silk title label with red seal. On the first leaf a large red seal. Various seals are found on the paintings. On the first folding panel paper buckled in the center. 3 cards in the album: a business card in the name of the painter with his credentials ""Member of the Guangxi branch of the Chinese Artists Association Member of the Guangxi branch of the Chinese Calligraphers Association Head of the art group of the Guilin exhibition hall"". The 2 other cards in bookmark format with black and white photograph each representing a view of Guilin with these captions: Amaranthus Lijang Memorial Yangshuo Shipping Company Guilin and Guanlian Bridge Yangshuo Shipping Company. Superb copy perfectly preserved. Ink painting is the traditional Chinese painting par excellence the word painting itself means in Chinese ink and water painting. In this technique landscape painting constitutes the most noble form of painting. This painting derives from the use of calligraphy and for a Chinese person one of these paintings is indeed read like a text. The message of these ink landscape paintings being both poetic and spiritual. The creative aspect is very removed from our Western notion it is first a matter of imitating the ancient masters and through this imitation transmitting one's vision and feelings. However the representation is very removed from mimesis and it is rather an expressionist appropriation. It is a painting of the soul and these paintings were formerly created by scholars whose works were meant to translate spiritual elevation. The work constitutes eloquent testimony of a renewal of traditional Chinese painting before its extinction upon Mao's rise to power in 1949. Groningen 1832 Manuscript of a poem recited on January 11 1832 at a meeting of the Groningen branch of the 'Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen' Society for Public Welfare. It is written on the first 9 pages of a small 16 page notebook. It has a plain paper cover is pamphlet stitch bound and measures 16x10 cm. § The poem numbers 29 quatrains each stanza numbering 4 eight-syllable lines in trochaic metre. In light verse the jurist Modderman a member of the local elite describes meetings of the Groningen branch of the 'Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen' during which people drink coffee and smoke a pipe or a cigar and listen to all kinds of edifying lectures. § Antonius Modderman born in Groningen in 1793 was a Dutch jurist and a conservative politician. He studied medicine and law at the University of Groningen obtaining his doctorate in law in 1817 with his dissertation 'de pauperibus'. He established himself as a lawyer in the same year in Hoogezand and then as a solicitor in 1833 in Groningen where he started also his political career. He was elected a member of the 'Provinciale Staten' of Groningen and in the revolutionary year of 1848 the year of the revision of the Constitution of the Kingdom of the Netherlands he also became an extraordinary member of the House of Representatives of the States General for a short period. He was a lifelong active member of the Groningen branch of the 'Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen' for he held several lectures there. Five of them he published in 1852 as 'Bijdrage tot de Huishoudkunde voorlezingen meerendeels zamengesteld uit spreuken spreekwijzen en spreekwoorden'. This collection was well received and proves that his prose was better than his poetry. Modderman also published in 1858 a history of the Groningen branch: 'Bijdrage tot de kennis van het departement Groningen der .Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen'. Margins uncut Condition: Binding worn. Back rubbed. Boards chafed. Corners bumped. Foot of the spine slightly damaged Note: This edition is according to Klaus Alpers in the Neue Pauly 2001 s.v. 'Lexikographie' a very important contribution to Greek lexicography. NP 15130. Johannes Pierson was a much promising Dutch philologist born in 1731 who died young in 1759 in Leeuwarden where he was rector of the Schola Latina from 1755. At the university of Franeker where the Renaissance of Dutch Greek studies had begun he was a pupil of J.C. Valckenaer and Is. Schrader. In 1751 he matriculated at the University of Leyden to hear T. Hemsterhuis. Hemsterhuis advised his students to use especially the lexica of the ancients. The ancient lexicographers could be of great use for the amending of texts of classical authors and they were of great help to gain a profound knowledge of the Greek language and its vocabulary. Valckenaer chose Ammonius Pierson Moeris Atticistes. This was a great age for ancient lexicographers. In 1754 D. Ruhnkenius published his edition of the Platonic dictionary of Timaeus Sophista. Sandys 2461; NNBW 3 976/77; Gerretzen Schola Hemsterhusiana 1940 p. 46 & 100. § Moeris Moiris was a Greek grammarian and lexicographer from ca. 200 AD. He compiled a lexicon for the use of correct Attic under the title 'Lexeis Attikôn kai Hellênôn kata stoicheion'. Examples of correct Greek are taken from Plato Thucydides Xenophon the Attic orators and Aristophanes. NP 8343/4. The last 50 p. of Pierson's edition are filled with the 'Editio Princeps' of the Philetaerus of Herodian. Nowadays this ancient lexicon is only ascribed to 'Aelius Herodianus et Pseudo-Herodianus' one of the most important Greek grammarians who lived in the 2nd cent. A.D. cf.
