Original edition ex-libris newly rebound in burgundy cloth with spine panel lettered in gold foil new endpapers new head- and tail-bands text block edges very slightly shaved. Perforation stamp to title page and first leaf of Preface pp. iii/iv a few stamps on verso of title page otherwise unmarked. xv516 pp. final page "Errata" illus. w/ folding frontis. map 10 plates 1 folding map 3 engraved plates 6 lithographed plates all present and intact without library markings slightly foxed. Binders' directions provided on p. xv. Eight 8 leaves in Ch. 1 show closed tears extending from fore-edge through margins and into the text in several cases across the leaf to the binding gutter but no loss all professsionally mended with clear archival tape and barely noticeable. No other internal defects excepting mild wear to some corners slight and scattered soiling. Large foldout map of Asia as conquered by Genghis Khan etc. in the 13th-15th centuries "Great Tartary" is detached and laid in; 995 intact with some very slight loss along edges and one fold separated and reattached along one of the two vertical folds with archival tape repairs to blank verso along other folds and some closed tears/chipping along edges; several of the recent archival tape repairs are laid over earlier non-archival tape removing which seemed likely to harm the map; there is one approx. 1" section of archival tape mounted on the front of the map along a fold with all other repairs made on verso only. Book presents "as new" by virtue of rebinding contents VG map VG. Overall a conservatively restored copy that will remain durable for decades of an exceptionally scarce issue. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins artist's monogram in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in lower margin numbered stamp of the luxury edition on verso; lithograph preceded by a tissue guard with legend of the artist's name title and an extract from a work. Lithograph inspired by an extract from the travel narrative in Brittany Par les Champs et par les Grèves by Gustave Flaubert reproduced on the tissue guard of the print. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late nineteenth century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints is printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential printing of very grand luxury: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan paper. Thick silky satined and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a work in its own right. Its quality of ink absorption and its affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and plastered in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and devoted to conservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the luxury illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy in a twilight light entirely symbolist. The second cover in bright red executed by Raoul Dufy resembles the railway timetables that one slipped into one's pocket: ""Le nom de Cendrars orne une bouée de sauvetage associant l'auctorité d'avant-garde au travail de sauvetage dans une décennie marquée par les catastrophes maritimes du Titanic au Lusitania"" The name of Cendrars adorns a life preserver associating avant-garde authority with rescue work in a decade marked by maritime disasters from the Titanic to the Lusitania Sophie Esch. Rare early autograph inscription signed and dated December 1918 on this text by Blaise Cendrars to Georges Le Cardonnel literary critic who co-wrote with Charles Vellay La Littérature contemporaine a survey conducted among French critics writers and poets. 1931 Manuscript Letter Relating to Canadian Publishing History on the First Edition of the Revue De L'Universite D'Ottawa
Ottawa Ontario Canada. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1931. Non-Book. On offer is a manuscript letter and accompanying envelope and business card all belonging to Raoul Leblanc 1894-1948 and related to the history of Canadian publishing. Dated January 27 1931 on Revue de l'Universitie d'Ottawa letterhead Leblanc writes to François Joseph Audet 1867-1943 and confirms that he is sending a copy of the first edition January 1931 of the La revue de lUniversité dOttawa. A nice piece of publishing history. Raoul LeBlanc and Georges Simard both Oblates of Mary Immaculate conceived the idea to publish a periodical to favour the development of higher culture. The first edition appeared in January 1931 under the title La revue de lUniversité dOttawa. As the need was being felt to advd to the Revue an organism that would help the professors of the University of Ottawa to publish their research it was decided in the fall of 1936 to create Les Éditions de lUniversité dOttawa. The first volume appeared in 1937: Pierre Le Moyne Sieur dIberville by Father Louis LeJeune was a posthumous volume. Francis-Joseph Audet was first employed in 1888 in the Secretary of State Department with the Keeper of the Records. Records and personnel were transferred to the Archives in 1904 and Mr. Audet remained there until he retired in 1939. Audet wrote in 1917 Canadian historical dates and events 1492-1915. He was named Archivist Emeritus in recognition of his long service from 1889-1939. Letter envelope and business card are all in VG condition. Visible creasing at fold lines on letter. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on the verso some foxing. Lithograph inspired by the poem Partenza by Francis Vièlé-Griffin. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was published in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft at once is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters grew in the early 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and plastered on the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the illustrated luxury book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy. An engraved portrait frontispiece four engraved allegorical plates one folding engraved garden plan small octavo pp liii i 200 8 a two-page publisher's list the frontispiece is a little marked in the inner margin possibly from sellotape residue and both this and the title page are a bit age-toned the verso of the frontispiece has some late Victorian inscriptions otherwise the contents are quite clean bound in fairly recent boards with a paper spine label the upper boards a little marked. Blanche Henrey 1255 devoting a page of text and three illustrations to it - "long remained popular and quotations from it are to be found in many 17th and 18th century books on English gardening". This third English editiuon is the only one to include the extra plate. It was originally published in France in 1665. The translator was Subdean of Lincoln Cathedral and Switzer describes him as "a great lover of gardening". Boards. Good. Bernard Lintot Hardcover

Kinney and text edited by Paulius Jurkus. 29 pages in clean condition but browned as usual due to quality of paper used. SIGNED by artist number 313 of unspecifed limited edition. Previous owners nmes on first blank page dated 1951contains 9 full page woodcuts. Outer boards are a little browned to edges worn on corners some loss to top of spine and repaired split to spine. Dustwrapper is browned on inside which shows a little in places on front edges of wrapper are worn with a couple of small losses the wrapper is in two halves the centre thin strip has gone rear interior fold has clear tape repair.
