COOKE Edmund Vance 1866 1932
Autograph Quotation Signed
Canadian-born poet known as "The Poet Laureate of Childhood" with sixteen volumes of humorous verse beginning with "A Patch of Pansies" 1894; other titles include "Basebology" 1912 "The Uncommon Commoner" 1913 and "Brass Tacks Ballads" 1924. AQS 1p 8" X 5" n.p. n.y. miniscule pencilled date of 1923 January 5 in another hand. Near fine. Handsome one-of-a-kind custom poem penned for University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Apparently Cooke penned this on the blank lower portion of Johannsen's letter to Cooke for Johannsen's signature appears at upper right. Titled "Professor of Petrology" Cooke jests with his academic admirer: "I've not the least bit collegacy; / I've also been a scarcity / In every university / Hence seize a moment's unity / As on this page I write my name / Along with yours of worthies fame" signed large and bold at the conclusion. This fun and unique item is attractively penned in black ink. Also present is a 24mo 4pp promotional leaflet touting recording of Cooks reading his poems published by Columbia Graphophone Co. Johannsen's original 8" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown

Cooksley Peter G.
VCs OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR: THE AIR VCs.
Wrens Park 1999. 204 pp 9 7/8" H. B&w photographs reproductions drawings. "Of more than 600 Victoria Crosses awarded to British and Empire servicemen during the First World War nineteen were awarded to airmen of the newly formed Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. Of these four were posthumous awards and all but one of the total were for officers. Some of these valorous airmen were from humble backgrounds and with limited education others were collegiate men from wealthy families but in the words of one senior officer they all had in common 'the guts of a lion'. This book provides fascinating insights into the lives of these bravest of the brave and of the circumstances in which they won their country's highest award for valour." Clean bright copy. .
