‎DAVID G. BOYCE SPECIAL FORCES CHAPLAIN‎

‎1966 - 1967 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DUTY JOURNAL AND PERSONAL DIARY OF A MUCH DECORATED SPECIAL FORCES CHAPLAIN SERVING IN VIETNAM‎

‎VIETNAM. Very Good. 1966. On offer is a very interesting original manuscript relic dated September 6 1966 through October 1 1967 of the Vietnam War and American involvement handwritten and typed by US Special Forces Chaplain David G. Boyce b.1928 - d. March 4th 2013. One part "Duty Log" and moreso a diary of all his movements and his personal thoughts regarding his service this is a very intimate personal history. There are even some movie plots he has imagined and poetry and songs - Boyce was quite a Renaissance man it appears! Using yellow legal pad paper originally handwritten the author changes over to a typed manuscript of 350 pages doing a superb job of recording names ranks operational duties and much much more. He does at times use blank spaces to be discreet and sometimes he admits he has forgotten the name. Here is a sample passage - spelling and typing mistakes intact: I remember the invitation of the Mike Force CO who is up here with a company guarding the camp while it is under construction. He and Sgt. Matthews the first sergeant had said to come on over and visit. I decided that if I dedn't get out that I would do just exactly that. I would go visit the Mike Force since I had now payed my visit to the Strike Force. I sat outside the team tent TOC for a while. Then I went inside and talked with Capt Horn CO. I told him my plan and gave him sixteen 16 of the Lubbock Texas "To a Soldier in Vietnam" letters- He said that he did not want to be abrupt but he had to leave for a meeting. We parted on this note. He went to his meeting and I went to gather my gear to go to Mike. Went outside and found that Sgt. Pederson was leaving. He said that he would give me a ride. He is E-7 acting team Sargeant. He took me down about 1700 to the Mike force location near the river- I dismounted and walked out into the woods. I saw the China Boy troops. They were obvisiuly Chineese. They kept pointing me farther back into the woods. Away from the road. Finally I came across two 2 Americans- It was Sgt. Leon and Sgt. Hoskins and Sgt. Leon came over and picked up my pack and took it for me over to the next object a half building 35 meters farther back. It looked like a half built house with posts and part of a back wall and about half of a grass roof with bamboo beams. This was the CP. Here I found the C.O. Capt. ----- Sgt. Matthews and Sgt. Lopey. I was given a very warm reception. It was the warmest that shave received since being in Vietnam. Even better than the one I received at Don Phuc mike force which was the best one that I had received up to that time. The warmth of their reception more than made up for the cold night that I was to spend there. I sat down and was introduced all around and told them that I remember Lopey from Bragg. He has a wife that is from Munich Germany and he now has orders to the 10th Group. Sgt. Leon is a dew and wanted to know why some of the ranking Chaplains are not ______. Sgt. Hoskins is called snake because he is very fearful of snakes. He is intrepid in battle is not afraid of death but he does not like snakes. The CO has orders to Fort Benning. He says that he is going "home". He knows Col. Stanly. He went through VW school with him and on one of their field problems he was point man one night and fell unto a 30 foot well. Sgt. Natthews is an old soldier with another couple to go which he will do in ROTC at _________ and hopes to continue there in ROTC after he retives. As a civilian the state pays half and federal pays half. Sgt. Hoskins has 23 years in Air _______ Since 1943. He was in the 519th Abn Bn that Gen. Yarbrough was in- Black Potch with the Red out line of a C-42 door and a resene parachute in the foor- He says that he will shortly retive and go to work in D.C. investigating welfare cases- His goal is to stamp out welfare- I sat down and they asked if I had eaten. I said no and told then that I wanted some of that pork and rice they had promised me. The served me with a big bowl of rice and pork with cooked cucumbers tasted like cooked turnips and a glass and a half of chocolate milk. It was a good meal because the fellowship was so good. I used several helpings of soy sauce to make it down and finished the entire bowl. Then we sat around batting the breeze which I usually don't enjoy but I did enjoy with them. Some one asked for the time and then some one said 1745. Shortly afterwards I need a watch to be more accurate there was a couple of explosions like a grenade heard off toward the river. Some one said that they are playing with grenades down there. Then there were more explosions and the sound an automatic weapon and some one called out four the Nungs Vee Cee! With that everyone started to scurry around. I was frightened so I took my cigar and put it is my mouth so that I would appear more calm than I was. I had a cigar because I had previously passed out cigars to Sgt. Matthews Sgt. Lopeg and Sgt. Leon- the CO and Sgt. Hoskins don't smoke- I put the cigar in my mouth and went over to my ruck sake and put on my tiger suit shirt I don't know whyand put on my webb gear. Next I dug out my 45 pistol and then had to hunt for the chips. I put a chip in but did not put a round in the chamber. Next I stood around trying to look calm with my cigar in my mouth. I went to the Nortor pit and watched then five the 60 MM nortors. They fived 5 had a misfire cleaved the barrel. I was very apprehensive as they cleaved the chamber and I tried to edge away without being too conspicuous. He finally cleaved it and began to fire some more. When he completed the fire mission the sound of firing died away and I thought that it was all over. I wandered back toward the CP trying to be as nonchalant as possible just as I reached the edge of the CP roof everything opened up all at once. I was frightened and the man standing next to me who was acting as my body guard told me to get in the hole that had been dug at the edge of the CP. I gladly got in. I thought that we were being over run because of the valume of fire power that was being put out. I pulled out my 45 and tryed to put a round in the chamber. It would not go. I pulled out the clip and all the bulled fell out. My Chineese body guard very calmly said "#10" and proceeded to take my clip and put the rounds in it while I helf his carbine. I than realized that I showed carry my carbine with me when I go out on field trips. It would be best to have a folding stock. He fixed the clip and I stock it in my weapon and put a round in the chamber and held the 45 on ready. I was expecting to see the VC any minute. My body guard then commented. "No VO". I couldn't see how this was possible but he said it several times with calmness and I began to be less frightened. I then got up out of my crotching position and sat on the edge of the foxhole. Again he saig "No V.C." and by now I began to believe him. With his words of assurane ringing in my lars I found the comrage to get up out of the fox hale and wander around. The firing was still going on but not with the first initial intersily. Behind the CP I found Sgt. Matthews firing the rocket launcher. He fired at least 4 or 5 rounds with the new self contained unit. The firing of the rocket launcher just about finished up the firing. A FAC came over. Sgt. Matthews wanted Francois to go down the road and locate China Boy 3 the CO & Sgt. Leon & Sgt. Hoskins & Sgt. Lepey. They would not come up on the radio. Francois did not seem inclined to go look. Soon they came in the CO and the ones who had gone out to investigate. The CO gave me a suvineer the tailfin off of a rifle grenade home made type that the local VC us. There had been 4 VC local type they had been firing at a jeep or trying to get in close enough to the New Camp for night _______ or trying for revenge on the Mike Force. As an informal critize it was pointed out that there were 4 VC. We did not get a one of them and in the process $5000.00 worth of ammo was expended. The heavy valume of fire at the end which had frightened me was the firing of their weapons out of frustration and out of just wanting to fire the weapons. Sgt. Matthews said that the time to be scarred is when you hear the "crack" of the bullets. Then you know that is incoming. Then is the time to be frightened- I realized that I had just about chewed the cigar into and also I realized that I was sweating out of fright. I threw away the cigar slobb and wiped my sweaty brow. Adding additional breadth to this personal account are more than a dozen photos many original of the writer who was the senior officer and the head of the Chaplain's Unit his colleagues and other Officers. Boyce we learn from a news clipping was a member of the Mecklenburg Presbytery Church of Charlotte North Carolina and distinguished as the first Presbyterian to be selected as a Special Forces Chaplain. He was also a jump master and fully qualified for the elite 3rd Special Forces Airborne Group. Further research regarding his military record list his military specialties which include an unusual and very intriguing record as Special Forces Officer Training Officer Chaplain and Parachutist. Research also notes many awards and decorations. Overall VG.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF VIETNAM WAR SPECIAL FORCES US ARMY VIET CONG SOUTHEAST ASIA NAM DAVID G. ‎DAVID HARRIS UNDERHILL aka 'DHU'‎

‎1932 1935 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY DEPRESSION ERA SCION OF THE UNDERHILL SOCIETY AND ONE TIME LIBRARIAN OF THE NEW YORK LIBRARY‎

‎NEW YORK CITY NY LINCOLN VERMONT. Fair. 1932. On offer are to very interesting manuscript relics of Depression era Americana being the original handwritten diaries of David Harris Underhill 1850-1936 the rather well-known founder of the Underhill Society of America. "DHU" as he was commonly known was a librarian at the New York Public Library and also at St. John's Methodist Episcopal Church in the Williamsburgh section of New York City. DHU was married to Caroline F. Green and they had 2 children Stephen Greene and Lucinda Harris a census record of the Harris household also included an adopted daughter Emma and an adopted grand-daughter Miriam. All are mentioned throughout both diaries. In addition to his labors at the Library and at St. John's DHU became the Corresponding Secretary and Family Historian of the Underhill Society of America once it was formally organized in the 1890's. His activities are detailed in these diaries as he answered correspondence organized paperwork and engineered the relocation of his duties to Lincoln Vermont in 1935 after his wife's death. The diaries also detail the family's activities both while living in Brooklyn while summering Vermont and finally after moving to "Apple Blossom Cottage" in Lincoln Vermont. He writes in an aged hand and his failing health is apparent in the 1935 diary. Ephemera littered throughout the book adds to the depth of the entries. Here are snippets: 1932 diary: "Jan. 14th Had lunch with Harvey P. Underhill at the Princeton Club 1p.m. 39th & Park Ave. to confer about putting his picture and biography in next annual report U.S.A.;" "Jan. 22nd Emma's birthday. Had birthday cake and grape juice in evening;" "Jan. 26th At work on ancestry of Charles A. Underhill;" "Feb. 5th Working on list for M.C. Taylor for Underhill Genealogy to give or sell to members of the U.S.A.;" "Mar. 8th Clear and cold windy Lindberg not found after a week;" "Apr. 5th The Underhill Genealogy is published and for sale.$30.00;" "May 1st Mr. Thomas F. Underhill gr-son of Thomas F. Underhill called.suggests calling the Sunrise Bridge 'The Capt John Underhill Bridge.' He knows Harvey Boro Pres of Queens;" "May 26 .saw President Harvey of Queens about tablets for the Rockaway Boulevard Bridge.Capt John Underhill Bridge;" "Jun. 12th Descendants Day at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Eastchester tickets attached." While on vacation in Vermont: "Jul. 9th Rat killed one of Lu's kittens in the wood shed last night;" "Aug. 2nd Mamma Mary Jones and I attended Lincoln Union of Old Folks;" "Aug. 20th Bought lawn mover for Lu $6.50. Took snooze in evening. Weight 190 pounds;" Back in Flatbush: "Oct 12th Went to Jamaica to Underhill Bridge Unveiling. 2p.m. parade started. I was on grandstand.I unveiled the tablet to Capt. John Underhill includes list of some in attendance out of the crowd of 1000 including 4 photographers;" "Oct 17th Spent most of the day recording gifts to the Underhill Soc. Library of curios & letters from Elizabeth Sullivant Columbus Ohio. She also presented the wine glass that Capt John Underhill used;" "Wed. Oct 19th Finished recording articles from Elizabeth Sullivant 82 articles recorded;" "Dec. 2nd Elmer gilding and cleaning portraits of Rev. Eli Wheeler Clavin Underhill and Mr. & Mrs. Well;" "Dec. 3rd Elmer cleaning and gilding Harris portraits David and Margaret;" "Dec. 4th Elmer hung portraits of David C. and Margaret Harris in the dining room;" "Dec. 16th M.C. Taylor sailed on the Bremen;" "Dec. 24th Tag the dog much better. Elmer Miriam Lu and Emma trimming the tree;" "Dec. 31st Radio from various cities abroad and U.S. celebrating New Year.DHU sat up til 2AM." As this listing is getting out of control we'll try to go lightly over the 1935 diary.which is actually more relevant to the relocation of DHU and his files to Vermont.and how that move was accomplished. Sadly this diary opens the day after the death of DHU's wife and just as funeral preparations were being made. Here are some exerpts: "Jan. 1st Lu Stephen Mary and DHU went to Locust Valley to Underhill Cemetery to locate place to put Mama away.sorrowful journey;" "Jan. 3rd Mamma was buried in Underhill Burying Ground;" "Jan. 23 Blizzard 18 inches of snow.similar to blizard of 1888;" "Jan. 24th The trial of Hautman for the kidnapping of Lindberg baby ended the prosecution and defense begins at 6p.m.;" "Jan. 30th President Roosevelt's 53 d birthday. Hauptman trial still on;" "Feb. 16th Elmer Lathrop had an interview about moving U.S. Library this summer to Vt.;" "Feb. 24th Will be glad when we get to Vermont;" "Mar. 24th Ready to pack Underhill Library material;" "Apr. 31st Mr. and Mrs. Baum called. Took some of the J.T.U. effects sword gun Lancashire Bible J.T.U. Bible and steins;" "Apr. 9th Packing of U.S.A. all finished for Vermont and W.C. Taylor vault. Family portraits to be crated;" In Vermont: "May 4th Began to be uneasy about the second load of goods.was glad to hear the truck about 9 o'clock.moving cost was $140. but we sure are glad to be here at last;" "May 17th Harley Farr's boy Paul 3 yrs old was lost on their farm about 4 o'clock and they had men from all over the neighborhood looking for him but they gave up the search about 11;" "May 18th Little Farr boy found by his Aunt about a mile from home.no bad effects so far;" "Aug. 15th Listened to memorial service for Will Rogers & Wiley Post who were killed in an air plane accident in Alaska;" "Sep. 16th .a fire broke out in the garage of the Moses place burning the entire barn & garage a car and a truck but they saved the house;" "Oct. 16th Arthur dug potatoes. We had 6 bushels of good ones and about 2 bushels of half rotten ones;" "Nov. 4th Lu found one of the 12 small chickens dead in the pen.no cause apparent;" "Thu. Nov. 28th Thanksgiving Day .had a 13 pound turkey and a good dinner;" "Dec. 31st Sat up with Daddy and Steve to see the old year out." The diaries also list household expenses weather observations number of eggs laid and the like. The 5 x 7 inch books' exteriors are in rough shape and the insides somewhat better. ‎Low's Political Parade. With Colonel Blimp. UNUSUALLY BRIGHT CLEAN COPY OF A TRUE PRE-WAR CLASSIC‎

‎The Cresset Press 1936. Oblong 4to. First Edition thus with many full-page illustrations one cartoon partly and neatly coloured by a child; original pictorial boards cloth back front board which is largely white very lightly age-soiled else a very good clean copy of a work increasingly hard to find in this condition. Of all David Low's work this is perhaps the undisputed classic. Some opt instead for Low's War Cartoons 1941 which undoubtedly reflects the spirit of the times; it seems to us however that the present work is to be preferred simply because in covering the years 1932-35 it embraces precisely the period which gave Low the opportunity to sharpen his barb in the face of what seemed to him both government and public apathy. The creation of Colonel Blimp alone makes this a true classic of pre-war illustration. Horne p.296 et seq. The Cresset Press, hardcover‎

‎DAVID MEYEROWITZ‎

‎1944 - 1945 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT WARTIME DIARY OF JEWISH COAST GUARD CADET ABOARD THE USCGC SASSAFRAS ON AID TO NAVIGATION AND U-BOAT DETECTION DUTY IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND THE NORTH ATLANTIC‎

‎PORT-AUX-BASCUE NEWFOUNDLAND NL CANADA. Good. 1944. On offer is the wartime diary of David Meyerowitz a Jewish cadet aboard the USCGC Sassafras. The diary is entitled by Meyerowitz Newfoundland Diary and details his time spent onboard the Sassafras performing Aid to Navigation ATON duties throughout. It begins: On october 24 1944 the Coast Guard ship SASSAFRASS pulled into the harbor of Port-aux-basque in Newfoundland. Aboard her were the regular crew and construction unit 192 which she had brought there and which I was a member of. This was that part of the world where I was going to spend six months or even more. We had come from Sydney Nova Scotia where we had been housed by the Royal Canadian Air Force for a period of two days. Sydney to me was like any other small town in the States - a main street - local prostitutes - familiar characters etc. I was surprised to find that most Canadians were quite similar to Americans in mannerisms speech and general demeanors; They differed in one aspect - their attitude or outlook seemed to contain an air of indifference and unenthusiasm but not to a great extent. From here it begins my diary of daily accounts of incidents observations and such. He keeps to his word. The diary is a faithful account of his life in Newfoundland first very interesting and curious then settling into a steady rhythm of short descriptions of work and longer entries devoted to off-time. He often comments on the locals near Port aux Basques and the rural and rugged life they live living off the harsh land. In Newfoundland the Sassafras mission was to install and maintain the powerful radio transmitters and receivers used to determine the position of a ship or aircraft. Called LORAN short for Long Range Navigation these radio-navigation devices were established at Mouse Island near Port aux Basques. The primary mission of all LORAN stations was to monitor U-boat activity and provide navigational aid to Allied vessels. Their operation was classified and the equipment was under 24-hour guard. November 7 1944. Tonight I have the watch in a lonely shack on a desolate hill overlooking the ocean. This has been one of my off-days which seems to occur at infrequent intervals.Being here is just the tonic to forget the whole damn crap. Other than the watch over the LORAN station it does not seem like Meyerowitz does much work. Often entries read like such: November 26 1944. A little work a little play. IN the evening - lounge around in the canteen.; December 13 1944. The usual day of work. A movie at nite. Uneventful.; 5 January 1945. Just another day again. The bad weather has started in again - snow rain and sleet. Stuck again tonight with the Dock Watch. There are also plenty of important days recorded. 7 December 1944. Today is Pearl Harbor Day - three years of war - although the unrestrained impatience about the war ending which was with me during my first year when I came into the service has subsided still I want again to get back into civilian life.; 12 April 1945. Tonight all of us were deeply shocked and overcome when we learned that President Franklin Roosevelt pass away. Just when we thought it was a winner - the radio reassured us that this terrible tragedy had taken place 10 minutes to 6 in Warm Springs Ga - 20 minutes after 7 here. A deep loss and affected me a great deal - Ill always relive the night when the universal calamity occurred - & at the same time news that Germany was on the verge of collapse - at intervals I am compelled to stop & concentrate on this tragedy. On April 23 Meyerowitz writes the final entry Well this is it - we have today - tonight - bursting with anxiety to get home - It has been a bad stay - And this ends my Newfoundland experience & diary - The end. The book is a small octavo format. It has held up very well with age. The cover is leather cover reads NCG 2105 / U.S. Coast Guard and is slightly curling in at the edges. The book is roughly 200 pages long with about 170 with writing. Almost all of the writing is in ink but there is very little smudging and Myerowitz writes usually in a clear and legible way. Background - The Sassafras was a C-Class 180 ft seagoing buoy tender constructed for the USCG by Marine Iron & Shipbuilding Corp. of Duluth Minnesota. The Sass was one of 39 tenders commissioned for duties that would include aids-to-navigation ice breaking search-and-rescue fire fighting law enforcement providing fuel and potable water and assistance to the National Oceanographic and Seismographic Survey.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; KEYWORDS:HISTORY OF DAVID MEYEROWITZ USCGC SASSAFRAS PORT-AUX-BASQUE SYDNEY NOVA SCOTIA NEWFOUNDLAND UNITED STATES COAST GUARD WORLD WAR 2 IN NORTH AMERICA AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN CANADA AID TO NAVIGATION ATON DUTIES ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE LORAN LONG RANGE NAVIGATION STATION U-BOAT MONITOR LAST YEAR OF WW2 USCG C-CLASS BUOY TENDER JEWISH SOLDIERS IN WW2 JEWISH CADET DEATH OF FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC AND SEISMOGRAPHIC SURVEY AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL AMERICANA ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO DANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover‎

‎DAVID MOORE to Mr. Firth‎

‎1843 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY A COTTON PLANTATION OWNER TO HIS FRIEND AND ACCOUNTANT DETAILING HIS PERSONAL AND FINANCIAL PROBLEMS DESPITE A BOUNTIFUL COTTON CROP THAT YEAR‎

‎TUSCALOOSA ALABAMA AL. Good. 1843. On offer is an interesting article of the antebellum Deep South. Sent by a Mr. David Moore in 1843 the letter concerns both personal and business matters of a Cotton plantation owner in some trouble. He is writing to his friend a Mr. Firth who seems like he is Mr. Moores accountant or money manager of sorts and lives in Mississippi. The letter begins with pleasantries towards his friend. I expected to come bye your place but the Sickness of my son prevented my leaving home until the last hours. He has recovered and I left him with his Grandmother bringing my wife and two children only - We are all well. It seems Mr. Firth has recently been made manager possibly at a bank or firm and Mr. Moore writes I hope you will be satisfied and distinguish yourself as a manager. He then gets down to his problem. I have the largest crop of cotton I ever have made if I could get it out - but the worst Fall to pick I have ever seen and I have more cotton in the field than I have gathered - Ragsdale says we shall never get our cotton out - Therefor to send more hands before getting it out will be important. Because the work has been tough he writes My duties have been such to prevent my attending to money business of my own - you must ____ me feebly and freely shall on all ___ connected with your business. As my expenses are great and no likelihood of getting anything for the next 12 months from your places but I hope I shall make something the next year but as a matter of course nothing in comparison of the Amount of hands and Capital vested you must to be this matter under your consideration and make the best arrangements you can to produce the best results. He finishes addressing his money matters in the letter by reaffirming his faith in Mr. Firth as a competent manager of his funds. You know my desire is do the best and if small additional expenditures are necessary I must provide for that purpose if necessary. You will judge of that and write me. Finally the letter ends with Mr. Moore writing of having been put at the head of the Bank Committee which has everything to do in regards to currency and Winding up. Our currency is only 6 pc. Below parr and daily getting better. It left alone it will soon come to parr. The letter itself is 2 full length pages one one piece of paper as well as a quarter length portion of paper in which the letter continues. The rest of the page has been ripped off at some unknown time. The pages are in fair to good condition. There are a number of rips and tears along the creases and edges making the pages fragile. There is also a bit of discoloration at points around the letter. None of it affects the legibility of the writing. The handwriting itself is in black ink slightly faded at points but in good condition. The script is easy to read throughout. This would be a very interesting addition to a collection of antebellum Tuscaloosa or cotton plantation history. Its a little slice of life in the Deep South before the tumult and destruction of the Civil War.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF DAVID MOORE TUSCALOOSA ALABAMA COTTON PLANTATION OWNER PRE CIVIL WAR PLANTATION ANTEBELLUM DEEP SOUTH COTTON HARVESTING AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY DIARIES JOURNAL PERSONAL HISTORY FIRST HAND ACCOUNT FIRST PERSON ACCOUNT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎
