‎DAVEY Martin L. 1884 1946‎

‎Typed Manuscript Signed‎

‎This Ohio democratic politician served that state as congressman 1918-21 and as their 53rd governor 1935-39. TMS 4pp onion skin sheets 8" X 13 3/4" n.p. 1935 March 9. Very good. Small paper clip rust mark at upper left of first page. Original single-spaced typescript of the Ohio governor's irate speech titled "Radio Speech of Martin L. Davey Governor March 9th 1935" on the Federal Emergency Relief Administration programs within Ohio and his inability to exert any control over it. In part: "Many of you will recall that I made an issue of this relief situation in the campaign last year. I made a solemn promise to the people of Ohio to correct the abuses and to eliminate the waste and inefficiency. / .neither myself as Governor nor any agent of the State of Ohio has the slightest possibility of correcting any of the evils and waste and inefficiency that give rise to such wide-spread complaints. I am wholly unable to keep an earnest campaign promise to clean up this situation. / It is not my purpose to evade responsibility. I was perfectly willing to take all the blame that goes with executive power but when there is not the slightest power lodged in the Governor to correct the abuse and waste I am not willing to assume public responsibility for what is going on." A lengthy denunciation of the way in which New Deal programs were being carried out on the state level. Interestingly Davey's pre-gubernatorial business the Davey Tree Expert Company was one of the earliest to sponsor network radio programs -- thus Davey was well versed in the power of radio waves to influence constituents. Within weeks of taking office Davey -- whose tenure has been described as "one of the most extraordinary and bizarre periods in the annals of the Ohio governorship" -- began feuding with President Roosevelt. He accused the federal administration of relief in Ohio with being "cruel inhuman and wasteful" -- to which FDR accused Davey with corrupting relief efforts in Ohio. Roosevelt quoted federal relief administrator Harry L. Hopkins who maintained that Davey's campaign committee had solicited contributions to finance his inaugural ball from persons working with the Federal Relief Administration. Davey sought to have Hopkins arrested for criminal libel. Before the Ohio legislature Davey called Hopkins a coward and a liar and dared him to enter Ohio. This typescript clearly precedes this name-calling brouhaha for in it Davey discusses Hopkins and his agency in civil if not cordial terms. Chronologically this speech likely falls some time shortly after the beginning of the Davey-FDR feud and the FDR countercharges. Boldly signed by Davey at the conclusion. Fascinating and most unusual -- an important relic from this memorable Ohio political squabble. unknown‎

‎SEFER SOD HASHEM being AN EXTREMELY RARE BOOK OUTLINING BRIT MILAH RITUAL CIRCUMCISION OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE‎

‎AMSTERDAM NETHERLANDS: Professor Shelomoh ben Yosef Props. Good with no dust jacket. Full-Leather. A rare book by the chief rabbi of Amsterdam David ben Aryeh Leib of Lida. Text entirely in Hebrew. SEFER SOD H asher hiber David de-Lida Amsterdam: Shelomoh ben Yosef Props 469 1708 or 1709. 6" tall 15.2 cm. 32 numbered leaves 64 pages the last one is blank plus 58 later blank pages plus endpapers plus a large manuscript letter of recommendation bound in. The manuscript letter is affixed in the center of the book behind the printed text but not attached to it. It is a letter of recommendation issued February 12 1834 to Isaac Kaufman of Bergheim by a local surgeon attesting to Bergheim's credentials as a mohel. It is about 14" x 9" with a red wax seal and is stamped three times. The wax seal is somewhat chipped away. The letter has some splits at the folds and is slightly stained and agetoned. There is an old ownership signature clipped and affixed to the front flyleaf but indecipherable. Plus there are 3 pp. of writing and another old clipped signature on the rear endpapers and flyleaf i.e. at the front of the book In addition there is in the blank leaves the ownership signature of Rabbi Emil B. Cohn with a record of a couple of circumcisions that he performed in 1941 and 1942. Condition: Some minor wear and handling contents age-toned and grayed with some pages having a little staining at the fore-edge but otherwise in quite Good or better condition hinges strong. The following information was taken mostly from the online Jewish Encyclopedia: DAVID BEN ARYEH LOEB OF LIDA ca. 1650-1696 Lithuanian rabbi of the seventeeth century. On his mother's side he was a nephew of R. Moses Rivkes author of "Be'er ha-Golah." As first rabbi of Lida hence his name he became successively rabbi of Zwolin Mayence Ostrog etc. In 1682 he went to Amsterdam and became rabbi of the Ashkenazic community there. A quarrel broke out between him and the rabbis of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews who suspected him of being a follower of Shabbethaism Sabbatianism. David was obliged to resign his rabbinical office and leave Amsterdam. The Polish rabbis protested and denounced the calumniators. The storm gradually subsided and David returned to Amsterdam. A few years later he went back to Poland and died in Lemberg. The inscription on his tombstone bears the date 5450 = 1690 but Polak proves this to be a mistake as several works are extant which were indorsed by him after the year given in the inscription. ‎DAVID BUEL Jr.‎

‎1857 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AUTOBIOGRAPHY HANDWRITTEN BY ONE OF TROY NEW YORK'S MOST PROMINENT CITIZENS OF THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY‎

‎TROY NEW YORK NY. Good. 1857. On offer is a super original manuscript autobiography handwritten by Mr. David Buel Jr. who retrospectively recorded his memories and anecdotes etc. in 1857 a mere three years before his death. The journal is a fascinating detailed sketch of his family travel life events genealogy etc. starting with his birth in October 1784 through 1830s but we note 1853 references on the last page. He writes of being a member of the Constitutional Congress of 1821 his mother's death in 1826 a voyage to Savannah on the Steam Boat George Washington travel to Martinique and Nevis in 1812 and much more. The 8" x 10" leather bound lined ledger book has narrative on the first 40 pages. Bumping to extremities. Some loosening to hinges. Marbled endpapers. Overall G. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES: One online source provides: Hon. David Buel Jr. Born Litchfield Conn. Oct. 22 1784. Died in Troy. N.Y. August 16 1860. Mr. Buel's obit stated: "For more than a generation says the Troy Daily Whig Judge BUEL has been one of the best known and highly esteemed citizens of Troy. Prominent at the Bar he was as well for many years very active and efficient in all public concerns in both city and country. He always enjoyed public confidence and was most faithful and devoted to any cause which enlisted his energies. In 1821 he was a member of the Convention which revised the Constitution of this State. He distinguished himself in that body in the discussion of several important questions. He held the office of Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for several years receiving the office first from the old Council of Appointment. Ill health obliged him to resign this position in 1827. Spending some three years in the South soon after in pursuit of health he returned and devoted himself to his profession avoiding public life. In 1842 he was appointed one of the State Regents of the University which office he held at the time of his death. We cannot enumerate the various positions of honor and trust connected with business charitable and religious interests which the deceased held in later years. They were numerous and every duty belonging to them was discharged with rigid fidelity. In religious faith he was an Episcopalian and for many years to the time of his decease he was senior Warden of St. Paul's Church. Judge BUEL was born in Litchfield Conn. Oct. 22 1784. His father DAVID BUEL moved to Troy in 1798 and resided here until his death in 1836. DAVID Jr. entered Williams College in the Fall of 1802 and graduated in 1805 and soon after began the study of the law at Albany in the office of DAVID JONES where his fellow-students were JOHN C. SPENCER and WHEELER BARNES; He concluded his studies in the office of ABRAM VAN VECHTEN. He commenced the practice of the law of Troy in 1809 and remained an industrious laborer in the profession until 1854 when failing health compelled him to abandon it. Though for a long time feeble under the weight of years it was only last week that his last illness was deemed of an alarming nature. He endured all with patience and without complaint. His exit from the world was calm and peaceful -- so that the sleep of death could hardly be distinguished from the sleep of exhausted nature. Throughout his sickness he retained his consciousness and his eye of intelligence even when from bodily weakness he was unable to speak. The last public appearance of Judge BUEL was as Chairman of the meeting of the Bar called on the occasion of the death of the late JOB PIERSON."; Transcript; 4to - over 9" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF DAVID BUEL CONTINENTAL CONGRESS TRAVEL LITCHFIELD STEAM BOAT GEORGE WASHINGTON CONNECTICUT AMERICANA TROY NEW YORK TRANSCRIPT MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS PERSONAL PERSONAL HISTORY MEMOIR MEMORIAL DIARY JOURNAL DIARIES JOURNALS LOG LOGS KEEPSAKE AMERICANA . hardcover‎
