‎1920s ORIGINAL SCRAPBOOK OF EDUCATIONAL AND CHRISTIAN OUTREACH BY THE AMERICAN PRESBYTERIAN MISSION AS A PENNSYLVANIA DOCTOR OF BIOLOGY AND ZOOLOGY SPENDS 7 YEARS IN INDIA TEACHING‎

‎ALLAHABAD INDIA BOMBAY JAMUNA RIVER SANGAM. Good. 1920. On offer is a sensational original scrapbook compiled and owned by Dr. H.G. and Mrs. Kribs of Pennsylvania. The book details their journey to India and their social life and meetings with the upper strata of East Indian society and many many government leaders with the background of their educational missionary work. That said much of the content shows that they were attempting to bridge the cultural gap between societies as many of the invites reveal 'mixed race' parties and functions. The diary is packed - to the point of the covers bursting and off though present - with invitations letters to and from photos newspaper clippings and much much more dated through the 1920's. There are a few photos at the very back in later years. The Kribs were based in Allahabad and were very highly connected as evidenced by the invitations. Invites include: Rai Bahadur Jagmal. Raja The Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University Members of the Indian Science Congress The Chancellor and Members of University of Bombay His Excellency The Governor and Lady Hailey The Senate House 8th December 1926 The Staff and Students of Oxford & Cambridge Hostel 1924 etc. Online references flesh out the details of the Kribs' trip and experience in India: 1 Narberth Presbyterian SPEAKER: Dr. H. G. Kribs University of Pennsylvania. SUBJECT: Some World Problems of Religion." This service will be under the auspices of the H. C. Gara Men's Bible Class. Dr. Kribs is a man of wide experience and will bring a worthwhile message. EVERY MAN is cordially invited to be present. 2 Dr. H. G. Kribs of the Department of Zoology of the University of Pennsylvania will speak on "Some Problems of Religion. He has had world experience as a teacher traveler and social worker only recently returned to this country after seven years residence at Allahabad India where he taught Biology in the Christian College. 3 Ewing Christian College ECC was established in 1902 as Allahabad Christian College by the American Presbyterian Mission ECC is one of the oldest colleges established in India. However this claim is doubtful because the British East India Company was long gone at the time of the college's founding as the British had taken over the control of India after the first war of Independence in 1857. At the beginning the college was named Vernacular school. Later its governance was shifted to the Presbyterian Church. In 1910 it was called Allahabad Christian College. The campus is located on the northern bank of Jamuna River near Sangam on the southern part of Allahabad City. Spread on a sprawling green campus of 42 acres 170000 m2 the college opened its Agriculture Economics Extension Department on the other side of the river which soon developed into Allahabad Agriculture Institute now a deemed university. The college took giant strides in the field of higher education with Dr. Dudgeon opening a first laboratory course in botany laying a very strong base for research in the college. In 1903 many undergraduate offerings were initiated. However in 1922 on the account of a new university act the school lost its college status. In 1935 it started offering classes in a coeducational setup. In 1950 after the permission of Allahabad University classes for degree students began and once again it acquired college status. More recently in 1995 it achieved its autonomous status as institution in India which could offer its own examinations under the affiliation with Allahabad University.; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; KEYWORDS: JAMUNA RIVER SANGAM ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY ALLAHABAD CHRISTIAN COLLEGE EWING CHRISTIAN COLLEGE SOCIAL STUDIES RACE RELATIONS CASTE SYSTEM DR. BIO NOTES: Dr. Anselm Windhausen 1882-1932 Anselm Windhausen was born in Lingen Germany on April 20th 1882. He studied at the Gymnasium Josephinum in Hildesheim and successively at the universities of Berlin Munich and Gttingen where he had among his teachers such renowned scientists as Ferdinand von Richthofen Wilhelm Roentgen Karl von Zittel Wilhelm von Branca and Adolf von Koenen. He began his scientific work at the Unicorn Cave in the Harz mountains of Germany under a scholarship from the Virchow Foundation conducting geological and paleontological studies whose basic conclusions were confirmed many years later. In those early years he worked for Gttingen's Geological-Paleontological Institute and the Roemers Museum in Hildesheim. In 1907 he obtained his Ph. D. in Geology at the University of Gttingen and that same year he was appointed to take care of the geological and paleontological collections at the Provincial Museum in Hanover. On April 20th 1909 when he was turning 27 he was hired by the Mines and Geology Division of Argentina's Ministry of Agriculture as a staff geologist. He moved to Argentina shortly thereafter. His first geological surveys in Argentina where conducted in the southern area of the province of Mendoza between 1909 and 1910. In 1910 he was in charge of organizing the mineralogical collection at the Centennial Exposition in Buenos Aires. Commissioned by the Argentine government he organized the Mines and Geology Division exhibition at the Industries and Labor Exposition in Turin and Roubaix in 1911 in which he obtained a "Grand prix." Between 1912 and 1913 he began his first explorations in northern Patagonia to investigate the oil outcrops that had been reported in the late 19th century in the Cerro Lotena area of the province of Neuqun. In September of 1913 he recommended the exploitation of oil in what is today the Plaza Huincul field during a lecture he gave at the Sociedad Cientfica Argentina in Buenos Aires. However the merit of having discovered that oil field was wrongly attributed to one of his superiors Dr. Hans Keidel and it wasn't until 1972 some 60 years later that Windhausen's achievement was finally recognized. In 1916 he resumed his explorations in the areas of Ro Negro and Neuqun to define the limits between the Cretaceous and the Jurassic. His conclusions were first published in 1918 in the American Journal of Science. In that study he established the concept and nomenclature of the so-called 'Jagel layers'. Subsequently he extended his expeditions to the area south of Lake Nahuel Huap the Chubut River Puerto Camarones Puerto Madryn and other parts of Patagonia. He published his research on the Neocomian fauna at the National Academy of Sciences in Crdoba Argentina of which he became a member a few years later in 1922. He maintained important scientific correspondence on the controversy surrounding the theories of Florentino Ameghino with such renowned colleagues as Herman von Ihering director of the Museo Paulista and W. D. Matthew of the American Museum of Natural History. In 1919 he was transferred to the newly-created Direccin General de los Yacimientos Petrolferos Fiscales which later became the state-owned oil company YPF. Windhausen was commissioned to conduct a complete geological survey of the oil areas of Chubut and Santa Cruz whose partial conclusions he published in Argentina and Germany. In 1920 Windhausen took the Argentine citizenship. After a strong argument with the Director of YPF Col. Enrique Mosconi about the prospects for the exploitation of Patagonian oil which he defended against other opinions he returned to Mines and Geology in 1923. In 1924 he published a landmark geological study of the Bay of San Jorge which for decades was the basis for the exploration and exploitation of oil in that zone of Patagonia. Besides he brought back to public attention the importance of the Jaramillo Petrified Forest now known as the Cerro Cuadrado Petrified Forest in the southern province of Santa Cruz. He sent samples of area fossils like the " Araucaria mirabilis " to his German colleague Walter Gothan a celebrated paleontologist with a recommendation for further studies in Germany. Windhausen also recommended the exploitation of what was later known as the lignite fields of Ro Turbio and extensively explored the Lake Argentino area of Santa Cruz. In 1923 he cooperated with renowned South African scientist A. du Toit during his visit to Argentina closely working with him on the geological correlations of Patagonia and Southern Africa. He then published a milestone article titled "El nacimiento de la Patagonia" The birth of Patagonia in 1924. In it he pioneered the idea of using Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift for the study of South American geology. His ideas about the tectonic plates of South America were confirmed some 30 years later with the use of satellite photography. In 1925 as a member of the Argentine Geographical Society GAEA he actively cooperated with the expedition of the German oceanographic ship " Meteor " which mapped the South Atlantic floor with the use of sonar. Along with his brother-in-law the German topographer Fritz Graef he co-edited GAEA's scholarly journals. In 1926 he was appointed Geology and Paleontology professor of Graduate Studies at the School of Natural Sciences of the National University of Crdoba. In 1928 the Berlin Geographical Society in its centennial granted him the Gustav Nachtigal medal ex aequo with the noted German geographer Fritz Khn for his contributions to Earth Sciences. In 1929 he published the first volume of his landmark work 'Geologa Argentina' Ed. Peuser Buenos Aires. Dr. Windhausen working circa 1926. At that time he also worked as a private consultant for the U.S. company Electric Bond and Share Co. for building a dam in Anisacate Crdoba. He was one of the founders of the Mining and Geology Society of Argentina. He traveled to Germany in late 1929 invited by the famous German geographer Albrecht Penck to finally receive the Nachtigal medal. In January of 1930 he lectured on " Bau und Bild Patagoniens " at the Society in Berlin presented by Penck himself. In 1931 he published the second volume of his " Geologa Argentina " devoted to regional and historical geology. For decades the two volumes of this work were an obligatory source for scholars and a textbook on the subject. The book incorporated his visionary application of Wegener's theory of continental drift to the geological interpretation of South America. In April of 1931 through the University of Crdoba he proposed to YPF the establishment of a scholarship program for students of natural sciences which benefited several generations of Argentine geologists as of 1932. After making a trip to Southern Patagonia in the summer of 1931-32 he suffered a stroke. Anselm Windhausen died at the German Hospital in Buenos Aires on April 2 1932 just eighteen days before turning 50. In 1935 a jury of which later Nobel Prize winner Bernardo Houssay was a member gave him a posthumous National Science Prize for his "Geologa Argentina." There are also some early German papers when Dr. Anselmo Windhausen leading up to his taking on the position in Argentina. ‎New York 1st DIVISION HOSPITAL 1865. On offer is a significant lengthy 6 pp letter approx. 5" x 8" datelined 1st Div. Hospt. 2nd A.C. Thursday Afternoon June 15 1865" written by Dr. C.S. Hoyt an Army Surgeon to a former colleague. Interesting content written as the huge Union Army was being mustered out. Here are some snippets: "each day makes us smaller and beautifully less. The old Army of the Potomac is being rapidly yet quietly dispersed. All the troops whose terms of service expire prior to Oct. 1st are already mustered out. We are looking for new and more extended orders for muster out and I think within a short time the entire army will be discharged its services being no longer required. Today orders came transfering all the Heavy Art. Regts. to Hancock's Corps and they are to hold the Forts around here. These Regts. are now moving the 2nd & 4th NY Regts among the number. We still keep up the Div. Hospt. These changes are playing the deuce with rank tossing Surgeons around as if on 'billous waves'.Tompkins and Howe leave today and O'Meaghen and Rouland will take their places. I am the only Surgeon left in the 3rd Brigade. The medicine waggon has been turned over and the Regts 39th and 52nd report to the 4th Brigade. We will all be scattered to every point of the compass within the next 15 days whether to be mustered out or for other duty I am unable to conjecture. I am inclined to believe you will be able to marry before long for without doubt your Regt will go out soon unless new complications should arise in the affairs of the patients. On this question of marriage I have no settled policy only to 'wade in' at such time as it may be convenient and circumstances will allow. 'Old Isaac' is cooking for our mess at 20 dollars pr month. He is now preparing 'Fish Balls' for supper. He desires me to present his very best wishes and desires you to write him a reference to an act. he holds against Col. Hemick. By the way the 'Old Rat' is quite gay among the wenches here. I am satisfied he would eat 'cheese' if the rind were not too thick. You say truly we had pleasant association at the old Div. Hospt.; they will never be effaced from my memory. I have always been fortunate in my relations with those whom I have associated in the army.My associations with you have been longer and more intimate than with any others and your many acts of kindness places me under deep obligations to you. I trust Doctor your future life may be happy." BIO NOTES: FROM: Ontario Co. Times Canandaigua NY Wednesday May 31 1865. Surgeon HOYT - We notice in a recent number of Yates County Chronicle an account of the presentation of a beautiful gold watch to Surgeon Charles S. HOYT chief executive officer of the 1st. Div. hospital 2nd Corps by the attendants of the hospital as a mark of respect and a token of their appreciation of Surgeon HOYT as an officer and a gentleman. Surgeon HOYT entered the service in 1862 as 1st Assistant Surgeon of the 126th New York and has since endeared himself to that command by his constant and uniform attention to his duties. His pleasant manners and kind and cheerful words to the sick and wounded under his care and accompanying the warm and substantial arrangements for comfort and good nursing which he always in some almost mysterious way seemed to improvise wherever there was occasion have doubtless buoyed up many a desponding spirit to shake off the death grapple about to seize another victim to the late unholy rebellion. Dr. HOYT was promoted to surgeon of the 39th NY a little more than a year ago and has since been for most of the time chief executive officer of the 1st Division Hospital 2nd Corps which has been known as the model hospital in the army during all the terrible campaigns of 1864 and the eventful winter and spring of 1865. Surgeon HOYT will always be remembered with gratitude by the soldiers who have so often been the recipients of his kind ministrations. VF. Very Fine. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Manuscript. unknown‎

‎DR. FE. GORDON F. E.‎

‎1847 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY A SOUTH CAROLINA MAN NOT HAPPY WITH THE LESS CIVILIZED LESS HOSPITABLE ALABAMA WHICH HE IS DETERMINED TO MAKE HIS NEW HOME AND MEDICAL PRACTICE‎

‎MARION ALABAMA BIRMINGHAM AL 1847. On offer is a super significant ante bellum manuscript letter handwritten by Dr. F.E. Gordon writing to his sister in Charleston South Carolina about his new life in Marion Alabama. Dated May 15 1847 the four 4 page offers up a scathing review. Dr. Gordon who would go on to be a noted member of the medical community in Marion for having published papers on fever and dysentery in a number of medical journals had apparently just moved to Alabama from South Carolina to set up his medical practice. He writes of his wife Sarah and their young son bemoaning the fact that Alabama is a less civilized less hospitable place than South Carolina. Here are some snippets: "Alabama differs much from S. Carolina and in nothing more than in the general demoralization which prevails. Public faith and private have long ago fallen into disrepute; and they are at present canvassing whether they shall repudiate the state debt as Mississippi did a few years ago or not. For my part I shall never cease to deplore the want of honesty and of refinement which are equally prevalent throughout this State. All the ceremonies which are so punctiliously kept up by the better classes in Charleston are unknown here; and those who pretend to lead the fashion and rule the politics of the state would be dubbed "outer barbarians" in your native City. In Mobile you can find some good society although the same moral tone pervades the most of that city." He says he is determined to make the best of it however. He mentions that though there are few amusements no theater or balls save for events at the local schools: Howard College Marion Female Seminary and the Judson Institute. He attends a series of lectures on Natural Philosophy and Chemistry given by Prof. Sherman at Howard College. He says he has also been called to court on cases to give "medical testimony." Folded for mailing some small loss to a few letters from opening but overall G. Good. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Manuscript. unknown‎

‎DR. HARRY H. BAKER‎

‎1910 - 1911 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF TWO 2 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES DETAILING THE LIFE AND ILLNESS OF A BROOKLYN DOCTOR FROM DIAGNOSIS TO DEATH‎

‎BROOKLYN NEW YORK CHICAGO ILLINOIS. Good. 1910. On offer is a very interesting archive of two 2 handwritten diaries and 14 early photos handwritten by Dr. Harry H. Baker of Brooklyn New York and at one time Chicago Illinois. The diaries relate specifically to his life and practice but of particular note are entries detailing his own illness from diagnosis to death. In fact he writes right up until the last week of his life. Historians researchers and collectors of medical writings of a personal and intimate nature will find this a unique perspective within the two small leather bound diaries that the doctor kept in 1910 and 1911. He lived at 480 East 19th Street Brooklyn New York. He kept careful daily recordings of his activities. Beginning in June 1910 through December he begins detailed records of his visits to the doctor and he gets a diagnosis of Mitral Stenosis. He reports frequently afterwards on symptoms and medication. He keeps up a lively social schedule through the rest of the year. The 1911 diary continues with the details of his medical condition as well as social visits. He records driving his auto and taking a doctor who was afraid to drive on his calls. In fact he seems to love taking people for a ride in his auto no matter the weather no matter how bad he feels. His condition worsens in April of 1911 and he requires a nurse at home. Perhaps the same nurse who is represented in group of photos that came with these diaries He is bedridden and the diary ends May 7th. Research suggests he died only a few days later on May 12th. He sensed his oncoming death because at the end of April he makes out and signs a new will. Here are some snippets: 1910 "June 20th Began Digalon again. 5 qts. B's d. First since 4/9. 10 weeks. Legs swollen worst since came from Ohio. Did not go down at night as formerly." "July 7th Dig. 5 qts. Demonstration of Overland with Dr. F. When talking with Mr. Silver on curb felt faint. Sat on window ledge a moment. Worse. He took me in to Cowperthwaite's where I lay down on settee. Better. Walked to 62 Ave. Worse again. Sat and cold sweat on forehead. Pulse almost imperceptible. Lay down for almost 40-45 minutes. Better." "July 13th Mr. Silver agreed to make me a special agent for Overland on 10 percent commission and sell me a car at special reduced price and give me prospect to follow up. Watch 52 seconds slow." "July 30th Called on Mrs. Krause Bismarck Hotel Chicago. "Ed" Moved. "Isn't she a luscious piece of flesh" Fannie to Mrs. Clarke music teacher about Helen. Left 1934 Sedg. About 1 mo ago. H. Called on Clara Girrach and with her inspected Nurse's Home and several wards of Bellevue Hosp. No dig. Today. Watch 45 seconds slow." "August 27th Downtown then to Br. Beach. Walked to Marsh Beach and Ocean Ave. car. Then to Sheepshead Race Track where I saw Ely fly and one other. First flight I have seen. Entrancing. Wonderful. Watch 42 seconds slow." "September 26th Went to Bellevue Hosp. Poor report for Miss Brink Supt. Of training nurses. Also poor report of Mr. Wilson of Roosevelt Hosp. Exam of Cadillac Stearns and Jackson Autos." "October 2nd Slept late and well. Went in auto with Dr. and Mrs. F. to call on Dr. Barnes at Williamsburg Hosp. Still in bed over 4 weeks after operation for Apps. Chess. Then he said he would see if he could figure out some way to protect both of us. Went to garage and got Jan. and Feb. bill receipts. Drove car to Dr. F's in garage on Penna Ave. Dig 5 qts." "March 21st About 12:30 P.M. had an attack of weak heart and poor circulation causing awful tingling and numbness in leg then foot and toes became immovable. Will gave me Puls. Cc1. In 2-3 hrs it got some better tho tingling when touched on inside of leg and foot. 2 days. Pain with this was excruciating. Auntie came over and helped Dr. and Mrs. F. Had a nurse Mrs. Evelyn at night." "April 5th Slept fairly well. Felt better during day than since taken sick this time tho very weak. Sharp pain about heart 4-5 times very severe. ‎DR. HUGH R. GREEN‎

‎1860s ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL COVERING TWO DIFFERENT TIMES IN A VIRGINIA MANS LIFE FIRST AS A STUDENT OF THE CLASSICAL SCHOLAR BASIL GILDERSLEEVE THEN AS A PHYSICIAN MAKING HOUSE CALLS TO PATIENTS IN NEED‎

‎UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA FAUQUIER COUNTY VA. Good. 1868. On offer is a notebook of fascinating Greek Lectures taken at the University of Virginia in the mid-19th century. The student and author of the book is H. R. Green M.D. and his teacher is Professor Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve one of the greatest classical scholars the United States has ever produced. This lends the notes taken here a very interesting air knowing they were given by an oft forgotten but very notable Classics scholar and Confederate soldier of the Southern States. There are 9 lectures written within the book taking up nearly 30 pages of writing. The lectures deal mostly with classical Greek Philology detailing the structure development and relationships of the language both in writing and in speech. The lectures also deal with more general language knowledge. Topics of the lectures are written in the left-hand margin of the page and include things such as: 1st Natural Sounds Correlation of language and thought Designation of the art of speaking Modern theories on the nature of language Grammatical study among the Greeks Gildersleeve's theory Sounds of vowels and much more concerning many elements of the Greek language. There is also a small one page chart showing the same word written in Greek Latin German and English showing the evolution of Greek words into these languages. This section of Greek Lectures is 29 pages. The rest of the book roughly 90 pages or so is taken up with accounts of services given by Mr. Green. Hugh Green graduate from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1867. Mr. Green was born in Fauquier County Virginia and seems to have gone back to his birthplace to practice medicine as the several of the names in the book have been traced to people who lived in or near the county. This portion of the book seems to have been written later than the first part covering the period from 1868 to 1872. Green graduated medical school in 1867 so his time at the University of Virginia was probably a number of years before most probably sometime around 1860-1863. By the time this second section is written H. R. Green is a practicing M.D. and is doing house calls as was customary at the time for many different patients. There are well over 100 different names written in the book. His services are usually just written as Visit & Medicine for which he charges between $2 to $3. However there are other things that Green does and charges for: Extracting Tooth - $1; 1 Bot. cough syrup - $0.50; Medicine & advice - $1; Obstetrical attendance - $6. For each client the costs are added up and then the method and date of payment is also recorded. For many clients it is simply By cash in full. However Green also takes payment in other ways: By 2 bshls corn @ $400; By digging grave - $2.00; By Bottoming chair - $0.25; By 10 lbs. Bacon @ 20 cts per lb - $2.00; By 4 days mowing @ $1.50 per day - $6.00 and various other ways of payment. Each clients account takes up a half to a full page. After the accounts section ends there are about 20 pages of names alphabetized in a specific years index showing on which page the name could be found in the book and occasionally how much money they had paid for Greens services. The book also includes a number of loose pieces of paper written by Green as well showing similar information to the accounts section account name services rendered cost of services payment etc. The book in its entirety is approximately 150 pages in which there is writing on all but a few pages near the back. The cover is a quarter leather binding with marbled paper over binders board. The spine has a good bit of wear and shows. The pages within are in good condition showing little discoloration throughout and only on the edges. The handwriting is in black ink and is legible and clear throughout with the exception of some more pronounced fading near the end. The fading does not affect the legibility of the content however. Overall: G. Background: Hugh R. Green was born on April 7 1842 in Fauquier County Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia and then graduate from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1867. He married married Sarah Catherine Settle daughter of Abner H. and Mary A. Settle on November 17 1870. He died October 28 1916 in Delaplane Fauquier County Virginia; Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve October 23 1831 January 9 1924 was an American classical scholar. From 1856 to 1876 he was professor of Greek at the University of Virginia holding the chair of Latin also from 1861 to 1866. After service for the Confederate States Army in the American Civil War during which Gildersleeve was shot in the leg he returned to the University of Virginia. Ten years later he accepted an offer of a position at Johns Hopkins University. He was elected president of the American Philological Association in 1877 and again in 1908 and became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters as well as of various learned societies. He received the honorary degree of LL.D. from William and Mary 1869 Harvard 1896 Yale 1901 Chicago 1901 and Pennsylvania 1911; D.C.L. from the University of the South 1884; L.H.D. from Yale 1891 and Princeton 1899; Litt.D. from Oxford and Cambridge 1905. Gildersleeve retired from teaching in 1915. He died on January 9 1924 and was buried at the University of Virginia cemetery. ‎DR. IJ. ALLEN I. J.‎

‎1865 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT PAIR 2 OF HANDWRITTEN LETTERS EXHAUSTIVELY DETAILING HIS LIFE AND KEEN EYED VIEW OF CHINA HONG KONG AND US RELATIONS BY AMERICA'S CONSUL TO CHINA‎

‎HONG KONG CHINA 1865. On offer are two 2 significant exceptional letters handwritten by I.J. Allen Consulate of the United Sates of America to China stationed in Hong Kong. The two letters one of which is 12 pages in length and the other which is 16 delve into incredible detail about the life and observations of Dr. Allen in China on Christmas Day 1865 and New Year's Day 1866. In the first letter Dr. Allen writes of the "Pagan land" in which he resides. He reflects on the commerce of America shortly after the brutal civil war that has just ended only six months before. "Since the war closed American commerce has survived beyond all expectation." Continuing with commerce Dr. Allen describes his salary and the ways in which he is making money profiting off the merchant ships that are increasingly coming through Hong Kong bay "flying the flags of every nation in Christendom. "The heavy banking capital is kept here in which the prodigious commerce of the East is conducted." After he concludes his talk on finances Dr. Allen moves to a gorgeous detailed and all together extraordinary account of Hong Kong. "The streets are so many promenades as smooth and as clean as the elegant avenues in your Spring Grove." "It is with unspeakable delight that one walks out of an evening or afternoon along these winding walks as they meander around and along the mountainside against which the city is built with the greenest of grass on either side the pine the palm the bamboo and the banyan rising terrace after terrace and yet so gently as to be almost imperceptible with streets all as smooth and as clean as the well kept walks of a gentleman's park." He then addresses the holiday on which he writes. "This is Christmas! And i sit writing with open mind without fire the morning glories and the oleanders in full bloom roses and cornelias everywhere.December's as pleasant as May!" Finally Dr. Allen talks at long length about the religion of the Chinese and the attempt to convert them to Christianity. "They are a nation of atheists" he surmises. "And yet this statement must be qualified by a seeming paradox that is that they have too much religion- or better too many religions!" Allen describes the religion around him and the many practitioners of it. He concludes eventually that "the peculiar conditions of the Chinese mind as regards religion is an obstacle almost insurmountable to their conversion to Christianity. They become atheists not like our atheists by rejecting all religion but by accepting all religions! The result is a nebulous nothingness as complete as the atheism of those who reach the same condition by an opposite process." The letter ends with pleasantries towards Reverend Brown. The second letter written only a week letter on New Year's Day 1866 is an extraordinary document of mid 19th century travel. Allen in tremendous detail and exceptional prose describes the last year of his life leading up to the present day at which he writes. "What a whirligig is time!" he begins the letter. "Ten years ago I was delving among books at College Hill - One year ago yesterday I was delving among lances and the etceteras of Maritime Law! What a whirligig is Time!" At 16 pages the letter goes into detail about each stop of the way from his beginning in New Jersey to his trip to San Francisco by train to his voyage across the Pacific Ocean stopping many times along the way eventually reaching Hong Kong five months after leaving his home state. "My voyage hither was rather a peculiar one in many particulars but not an unpleasant one. I was long coming - from May 1st to Oct 1st - 5 months - but was unavoidably detained 2 months at San Francisco." The many places he stopped through including the Sandwich Islands the islands of Hawaii - "the most delightful climate perhaps in the world" - are all described in his flowery and gorgeous prose in flowing handwriting that is remarkably easy to read. After pages of journey "at 9am on September 28th by our calendar we dropped anchor in Hong Kong harbor. I had made the voyage to Hong Kong 15744 miles without a storm and without an accident!" The second part of the letter is written to Rev. Brown's wife and discusses the women of China and their culture including their foot binding practice and their clothing and body shape. Finally the letter ends with Dr. Allen's description of his attempts to get better at the Chinese language and the Chinese attempts to learn English. As with everything in the letter it's written with brio. The letters are bound by ribbon and are kept together well. Overall G. Good. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Manuscript. hardcover‎

‎New York: John F. Trow 1857. This book is in wraps that are fragile but attached and the pages have been hand cut. This was the address by Dr. John Francis at the dedication of the permanent house for the New York Historical Society. When delivered the speech as noted by the author was curtailed and was later published in its entirety. The address was entitled - New York during the last half century. Dr. Francis was eminently qualified to deliver this address as he was a long term member of the society and knew many of the prominent citizens of the time that he spoke about. It reads wonderfully -even today and the book also gives the proceedings of the dedication of that time of the library. ‎DR. JOHN JAMES HUME SPRY‎

‎LATE 18th EARLY 19th C. HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT TRANSLATION AND COMMENTARY OF THE GOSPELS IN GREEK BY THE RECTOR OF MARLEBONE AND PREBENDARY OF CANTERBURY‎

‎Good. On offer two volumes in one book being a printed version of the Gospels in Greek bound in between blank pages wherein handwritten manuscript commentary and translation in English by James Hume Spry whose inscribed name appears on the free front endpapers. Research provides that the author was The Reverend John Hume Spry Doctor of Divinity Rector of Marlebone and Prebendary of Canterbury who died at his Residence 13 Devonshire Place in 1842. There was a cousin James who was a Doctor of Medicine but this is clearly written by a very knowledgable and ecclesiastical minded individual. How the book's ownership is inscribed in James' name we can only surmise and making a fascinating book all the more enigmatic. We believe this is Mr. Spry's life long work interrupted by his demise as there are pencil headings that were prepared for future writings. The handwriting changes over time and gets worse in the final entries more ink stains etc. These volumes are not paginated but the laid-in Greek text is and it comes to a total of 504 pages. With what appears to be the only one exception the Greek text is all very legible-just the final page has enough ink stains on it to make it very difficult to read. The condition of the boards is good but the binding is good and the inside is generally quite clean. The hard cover document measures 8.5 inches by 6 inches and contains 210 pages. It is 100% complete. The document is typed and is printed in both English and Hebrew. There are a number of typed inserts at various places in both the English and Hebrew sections. Although there is some staining on the pages the typing is completely legible. All pages are intact with no pages or sections missing. However the numbering begins with page 35. The index begins at page 35 as well. The book was the property of a Jewish judge Dr. A Wachs. The book is entitled Supplementary No. 2 to the Palestine Gazette Extraordinary No. 978 of 15th January 1940. In the opening paragraph titled Court Rules the rationale for the Supplement is laid out: "IN EXERCISE OF THE POWERS VESTED IN HIM BY ARTICLE 19 OF THE PALESTINE ORDER IN COUNCIL 1922 AND SECTION 26 OF THE MAGISTRATES COURTS JURISDICTION ORDINANCE 1939 AND ALL OTHER POWERS ENABLING HIM IN THAT BEHALF THE CHIEF JUSTICE HAS WITH THE CONCURRENCE OF THE HIGH COMMISSIONER MADE THE FOLLOWING RULES OF COURT" p 35. The book then goes on to delineate in great detail the rules to be followed in the Magistrate's Courts in the British Mandate. On a number of pages there are numerous typed notes inserted or attached to specific sections. These are almost exclusively in Hebrew. There are also extensive handwritten notes and marginalia. The civil Mandate administration was formalized at the League of Nations in 1923 under the British Mandate for Palestine. The Palestinian judicial system was unique because Palestine has been occupied and influenced by different powers and rulers for proceeding century. The result was an elaborate legal system. Obviously much came from the now-defunct Ottoman Empire but large amounts were imported from Europe especially the French legal system. On top of this was now added English common law. The British Mandatory administration in keeping with the policy of Great Britain in administering its colonies was anxious to introduce into Palestine the essentials of the English legal system. This volume is one part of that extensive exercise. For a legal historian this is an excellent piece of the legal mosaic that formed the judicial foundation for the Palestine Mandate and the new State of Israel that would come into being in eight short years. Legal scholars may find the added notation by this Judge to be interesting commentaries on the law and its application in this volatile time and place.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; ISRAEL; 1940s; 20TH CENTURY; DR.
