‎DR. MATHIS P. GREENSWORD‎

‎1857 - 1860s ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT MEDICAL CASE BOOK OF A PROGRESSIVE PHYSICIAN PATHOLOGIST AND WOULD BE AUTHOR‎

‎New York State. Good. 1857. Decorative Cloth. On offer is the original handwritten manuscript doctor's case book/journal of a pre Civil War era New York State doctor describing in meticulous detail cases from his practice from 1857 through the early 1860s. This is not a standard doctor's agenda - this book was superbly detailed as a book highlighting our esteemed author's practice relating to specific illnesses and no doubt for future publishing. Doctor Mathis P. Greensword practiced Medicine in various parts of the state from Canandaigua and Hopewell in Ontario County to New York City to Rochester for approximately 40 years. He ultimately settled in Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County and was active there through at least 1896. He was a member of professional organizations and published articles in medical journals. Later in his life he published a novel and a book of poetry. Although there is no indication that any of this material was ever published Dr. Greensword apparently thought of himself as a writer as well as a physician. An ad soliciting submissions for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper is pasted to the inside cover. There are a few much later notations in the same handwriting one referring to later volumes of his cases although only this one volume appears to be extant. This journal of his cases was apparently for his own reference but with a great deal of attention to presentation having an embellished title page as well as a title at the head of the text: "Medical Facts by M.P. Greensword M.D. or A Record of Cases Occuring in his Practice Commencing with the Year 1857 Volume I" and lovely calligraphic script on every page. The descriptions of the cases for the most part provide a detailed narrative of the progress of the treatment noting improvements setbacks cures and in some cases deaths. The symptoms are often described in detail in some cases quoted from letters received from the patient. It isn't clear if he was primary physician in every case or was referred. In one case he was apparently called in to review another doctor's work. He recounts the results of a post mortem confirming his diagnosis then notes "Dr. Witter owned up in a manly way that he was mistaken". At the end of the volume he has compiled an index of the illnesses treated with page number references and a list of the names of patients also with page numbers. The latter index could potentially provide limited details about the lives of some specific people. The journal is oddly organized with no clear chronological sequence to the listings. There are pencil check marks in the text perhaps added when the index was compiled. There are some symbols scattered in the text although it is not certain whether these are a standard medical shorthand or a code specific to this writer. The treatments prescribed are sometimes cryptic although in one margin the Doctor provided a detailed recipe for a "Cure for Cancer". In a few cases Greensword provides details only tangentially related to the treatment relating that one patient was French or that a woman contracted Syphilis from her husband who then abandoned her. In one case he apparently alludes to homosexuality when he notes that a man with Gonnorhea "said he Contracted by Sleeping with a Man affected by it." In another case he provides dramatic details of a patient found dead: "She is Dead.We put her in a Large bathing tub in warm water for two hours but no signs life. This Woman caused her own death in trying to produce Abortion on herself by means of an Instrument furnished her by a Doctor's Wife-She passed Instrument too high in the Uterus- She was just Going up to the Fair Ground to see the Soldiers -a Horse & Buggy were ready for her & her Husband Waiting. She ran up stairs for a little While- She was there but a few moments when a Lady who lived on a lower floor heard a fall & a Groan. She ran up stairs & found.Dead & found the Instrument she had just used about her clothes." Many of the cases relate to obstetrics and gynecology others to fevers respiratory diseases and accidents. The doctor recounts several operations as well as corrective apparatus used to help with curvature of the spine. In one case he discovers that an infant has been poisoned "by accident or design" with a corrosive substance. A post mortem reveals copper sulphate poisoning. The doctor clearly thought himself at the forefront of current medical practice but a good portion of his diagnoses and treatments seem primitive by modern standards. Some case notes end with the phrase "entirely well" even when this result seems doubtful. In other cases his comments reveal a Victorian attitude toward sex as he notes several times that he suspects that a patient "practices masturbation". In any case his patients must have been grateful to receive assistance and a large number of case histories seem to end with a favorable result. Selected family names of patients included in the index: Abrahams Adams Austin Bateman Barras Bearnes Bolger Brower Butler Coffee Corgan Cornmaier Cutler Decker Deming Dinsmore Doolittle Eckert Francisco Gillett Gilmartin Goldstone Greensword Hawley Hall Higinbotham Hill Hillman Horgan Isenhour Kellogg Kimber King Kirk Knowles Leland Magee Mahony Mc Anally McCormick McCarthy Mckinstry Mulholland Newman O'Neill Pickel Richter Robbins Sands Scheuch Schoonmaker Sutherland Thatcher Tillotson Twist Van Gorder Van Tyne Wagner Warfield Wheeler Wheelock Wilt Woodlin Young. ‎DR. RALPH MOZART WHITEHEAD‎

‎1893 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF THIRTY 30 MANUSCRIPT LETTERS BY A WONDERFUL CORRESPONDENT AND WELL TRAVELED SHIP'S SURGEON TO HIS FAMILY‎

‎ASEA TO AMSTERDAM HOLLAND THE NETHERLANDS. Good. 1893. On offer is an archive of original manuscript letters handwritten by the well-traveled and erudite correspondent Ralph Mozart Whitehead who writes to his family approximately 30 letters from Amsterdam in 1893. Whitehead a New York City doctor travels aboard the SS Didam of the Netherlands-American Steam Navigation Co. Ralph's obituary found online states: Ralph Mozart Whitehead New York; College of Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago 1890 ; for many years ship's surgeon; aged 75; was killed March 7 1942 when his ship was torpedoed in the Caribbean Sea. These letters begin writing about the sea journey and the ever present fog through the English Channel. Once in Amsterdam he effortlessly describes the canal people bridges cafe's and aspects of Dutch daily life. In the spring he is struck by the sight of the flower farms "Acres and acres of" "exotic hues spreading out for miles and miles" "a sea of color upon which the rainbows of ages have been gathered together and their evanescent and fleeting iridations imprisoned for a little season." He is also taken with the many museums and the Old Dutch Masters at the Hague. "Some of the pictures are simply wonderful. I never could have believed it possible that cloth and fabrics of different textures could be rendered so perfectly that jewels could be make to scintilate and sparkle on canvas. That metals could be so painted as to leave not the smallest doubt as to what it is meant for." He speaks about Rembrandt's works at the Rykes "the remarkable thing about the picture is the life it shows. You almost look to see the leader step forth onto the floor and you can almost fancy you hear the drum beat so perfectly has the action been caught." Manyof the letters have separated apart were they were folded and are in in few pieces some have tears in the crease but overall Fair. ; Manuscript; 4to - over 9" - 12" tall; EARLY TRAVEL HOLLAND NETHERLANDS LOW COUNTRIES MEDICAL DOCTORS WHITEHEAD SURGEONS HANDWRITTEN DIARIES DIARY MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY ARCHIVE DIARY DIARIES antiquit contrat vlin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito Papel . hardcover‎

‎1912 - 1915 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRIP AND TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A DEDICATED YACHT RACING DENTIST AND ALL AROUND 'OLD SALT'‎

‎HARRISON NEW YORK WESTCHESTER COUNTY BLOCK ISLAND. Good. 1912. On offer is a super original 1912 - 1915 manuscript relic of one man's utter dedication to sailing and yacht racing. Dr. Swepson J. Brooks of Harrison New York in Westchester County from August 1912 to March 1915 keeps a remarkable travel diary detailing his sailing sometimes motor boat trips. As he states at the outset: "An account of my wanderings by sea chiefly in the good ketch Sindbad". The 150 page book begins with a first voyage that appears to be Long Island Sound oriented and it soon becomes evident that Swepson is a real salt and a dedicated highly experienced sailor and captain. Position weather and wind all recorded faithfully along with a rousing narrative of all the ship and mates encounter. The work as a whole shows a man who as early in April as he can takes his boat out whether for his personal pleasure or to represent his yacht club. In 1913 he details a renowned area race between April 9th and June 18th 1913; he titles the section: Log of "Saxon" Block Island Race June 21 1913 under Edward G. Faile with Brooks as Mate". They only made the middle of the pack as we note in the clippings about the race and results which are tipped in. His voyages continue on his own boat with other trips to 1915 which includes a New York to Florida race. ‎DR. WILLIAM WORTHY‎

‎1910 - 1915 ORIGINAL SIGNIFICANT MANUSCRIPT LEDGER BOOKS 2 DETAILING A BUSY URBAN OBSTETRICS PRACTICE HANDWRITTEN BY THE NOTED AFRICAN AMERICAN PHYSICIAN ACTIVIST AND FATHER OF A ONE DAY HIGH PROFILE CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST IN EARLY 20th CENTURY ROXBURY‎

‎BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1910. On offer is a detailed and fascinating record of a busy physicians practice in the early 20th century. Comprised of 2 volumes they measure 12 inches by 8.5 inches and contain 220 pages each. They are about 95% complete. The hardboard covers are worn but intact and all pages are secured. Along with the record books are a number of prescription forms on which he has made notes. Dr. William Worthy was born in 1878 in Georgia and died in 1954 in Boston MA. He was a black American who established a very successful obstetrics practice in Roxbury a neighbourhood in Boston. The city states that Roxbury serves as the "heart of Black culture in Boston. Although the center of the African-American community in Boston today in Worthy's day it was a more multi-ethinc community with a large German and Jewish population. In 1929 Worthy along with Dr. WO Taylor led the drive to get 2 black high school graduates into the nurses training program at Boston City Hospital. This in turn caused the hospital to integrate its remaining training programs. The volumes are titled Physicians Day Book and Journal. They cover the time period from May 1910 to May 1919. They provide a detailed record of patient's visits as well as a record for billings for each. In each volume there is also an Obstetric Record section where some additional notes are made for patients. Also of interest is that he notes the nationality of each patient. He has a busy practice. While he does not record details of general visits he does note details of deliveries: "Case No: 34 13 18 Name: Alice Grant Irene Forde Editha Bennett Age: 15 35 Country: US US WI West Indies Pregnancies: 1 10 1 Abnormal Symptons: None None None Date of Labor: 1-21-18 9-7-16 5-6-13 Length Hrs 18 1 11 forceps delivery # of Children: 1 1 1 Sex: Male Male Male Weight: 7 lbs Still Born 71/2". His practice was financially successful as well. His monthly earnings ranged roughly between $100.00 to $400.00 - this at a time when the U.S. Census Bureau data indicates that an average monthly wage was about $57.00. Of note is his son William Worthy Jr. Worthy Jr. grew up to become a highly respected African American journalist and civil rights activist. He was involved in several high-profile constitutional challenges which he won. In one of those cases he was represented by the famed William Kunstler who was just beginning his outstanding career as a civil rights lawyer. This is an outstanding record of medical work in urban America in the early years of the 20th century. ‎DRAGONETTE Jessica 1900 80‎

‎This American singer helped make operetta and light classical music mainstream on the radio and in concerts from the late 1920s through the 1940s earning her the nickname "Princess of Song"; she performed extensively for the U.S. war effort during World War Two and even made the occasional film appearance. IPS heavy stock 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. ca. mid-1930s. Fine. Outstanding sepia tone portrait of Dragonette in floor-length gown standing in front of a stuccoed wall a large oil painting of her to the side.
