‎SEOUL KOREA TO NEW YORK CITY. Very Good. 1925. On offer is a fascinating original 1925 - 1926 manuscript travel diary handwritten by Ontario Canada born Margaret Matilda Hardie nee Kelley 1863 - 1946 wife of Robert Alexander Hardie also born in Ontario 1865 - 1946 a renowned Southern Methodist medical missionary to Seoul Korea in the early 20th Century. The Hardie's contribution to Korea was noted in the book 'The Role of Robert Alexander Hardie in the Korean Great Revival and the Subsequent Development of Korean Protestant Christianity' by Chil-Sung Kim. Uniquely this travel diary dated December 23 1925 to June 11 1926 concerns the Hardie's 4 month furlough trip back to the USA from Korea via the western route through the Middle East and Europe and then some time in the USA. The wonderment of diaries written by the wives of important men is that the diary is in fact about Robert as much as Margaret. Historians and researchers of Christian outreach in Korea will find this book a dual treasure: an East to West travel diary and six weeks of the Hardie's work in the USA. In fact no sooner do they return than they meet at the Korea Club and after a brief rest Robert heads for Memphis on ministry work. The opening entry begins "We left Seoul on Dec. 23rd. A large crowd was at the station to see us off." The diary goes on to relate the Hardie's voyage to Hiroshima Japan and the train ride to Kobe where they board the SS Macedonia bound for Shanghai China. From there it's on to Singapore the Bay of Bengal Colombo in Ceylon Sri Lanka Aden the coast of Africa and the Red Sea the Suez Canal Port Said Egypt Jerusalem and Bethlehem in the Holy Land present-day Israel Athens Greece Naples Rome Pisa Florence Italy Paris France London England Edinburgh and Glasgow Scotland Belfast and Dublin Ireland and then back to London for the Atlantic Ocean crossing to New York where they arrive on April 28 1926 after a journey of just over four months. The remainder of the diary concerns the Hardies' travels and doings in the USA. The 6.25" x 4" diary book itself is of Japanese manufacture and comes in a slip sleeve. ‎NORTHAMPTON MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1903. On offer is an interesting original 1903 - 1904 manuscript diary handwritten by Margaret Ruth Pomeroy Hamlin a student at Smith College in Northampton MA and later an Agricultural Counsellor for Women in Stockbridge from 1918-1934 and the first Placement Officer for Women from 1934-1948. She was originally accepted to the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1914. Her success and renown are evident by the honor bestowed her having The Margaret Hamlin House also known as Hamlin Hall a dormitory in Amherst MA named for her. It is part of the Northeast Residential Area at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The building is designed in the Georgian architecture style and is covered with brick. One online source provides: "The new two-year course included six months of on-the-job field training. To supervise the work of the men and women engaged in this training two staff members were required. On January 1 19I8 Miss Margaret P. Hamlin a Smith College graduate who had in Amherst developed a hobby of farming was appointed as one of these members with the title of "agricultural counsellor for women." Miss Hamlin developed this position until it encompassed the full activities of a Women's Placement Office. For thirty years she performed her duties most successfully. She took a great many trips some under arduous conditions to locate and evaluate positions in which students might be placed. In an area extending from Germantown Pennsylvania to Northern New Hampshire and Maine she found jobs for women in greenhouses and flower shops vegetable gardens and dairy farms. One of the most interesting examples of this placement work involved a large dairy farm on an estate near New York City which was run by two women one a professor of geology at Columbia University Ida Helen Ogilvie; see: Bedford Camp the first Woman's Land Army unit in USA . On this farm Miss Hamlin placed a number of young women who had studied animal husbandry at M.A.C. Two of these students later became farm managers on the estate." The 5 x 7¾ inches book has about 180 pages of which about 133 have entries. The spine is somewhat worn rubbed creased. Hinges cracked. Internally very good/near fine; clean and tight. ""L'époque est à la violence"" 'These are times defined by violence.' 23 janvier 1957 16.20 x 23.50 cm 2 pages sur un feuillet - enveloppe jointe Autograph letter signed by Marguerite Yourcenar dated 23 January 1957 two pages in black ink on a single sheet with the original envelope included. On two densely written pages Yourcenar confides her editorial frustrations to her close friend the painter Elie Grekoff recounting the blasphemous act of her publisher who had torn in ""en deux ou plutôt en quatre"" ‘two or rather four’ the dedicated copy of her poetry collection Les Charités d’Alcippe 1956 and returned it to her by post. She discusses joint projects with Grekoff and requests that he accept the profits from a work he illustrated for her. Yourcenar writes from the United States which she joined in 1939 with her companion Grace Frick then a professor of British literature in New York. From 1950 onwards they settled on Mont Déserts Island bordering Canada in a house named Petite-Plaisance which she mentions in the handwritten letterhead. Amidst the wild nature and crystalline lakes she would write there some of her most celebrated works including The Abyss. Through the text we catch fleeting images of the author’s reclusive existence: « Ici travail abrutissant favorisé par les grands froids qui font qu'on ne sort qu'un bref moment ou quand on y est obligé. Correction d'épreuves correspondance en retard depuis des mois traduction et enfin le livre en train . les journaux arrivent très régulièrement et si vite dans le cas du Monde que j'apprends par lui les nouvelles de New York avant d'avoir le temps d'aller au village acheter le New York Times » “The work here is grueling compounded by the bitter cold so that one ventures outside only for a short while or out of necessity. Proofreading months of overdue letters translation and finally the book underway … the newspapers come so promptly and consistently particularly Le Monde that I hear the New York news from it before I even manage to go to the village and buy the New York Times”. The most poignant passage of the letter concerns her stormy dealings with her publisher Curvers regarding her neoclassical-spirited poetry collection Les Charités d'Alcippe. Yourcenar recounts the publisher’s unforgivable act enraged by her reproaches over the premature release of the collection: ""Toute la légalité et le sens commun sont de mon côté mais cela n'a pas empêché l'irascible liégeois de me renvoyer un ex. des 'Charités d'Alcippe' déchiré en deux ou plutôt en quatre. L'époque est à la violence  ‘All legality and common sense was on my side yet that irascible man from Liège still sent me back a copy of Les Charités d'Alcippe torn in two-or rather in four. These are times defined by violence.’ “The affair of the gentleman from Liège” as mentioned in the letter ultimately resulted in a full-fledged legal dispute through attorneys. The writer’s uncompromising standards and constant concern for copyright earned her several disputes including two lawsuits—one with the director Jean Marchat and another with her publisher Plon. The letter’s recipient Élie Grekoff 1914–1985 painter illustrator and master bookbinder remained a close confidant of the writer for decades and collaborated with her on several editorial and theatrical projects. Among his contributions he designed the scenery for her Sartre-inspired play Electre ou la chute des masques which premiered at the Théâtre des Mathurins. The letter also bears witness to two of their artistic collaborations: the edition of a Latin classic and of a renowned Hindu poem the Gita-Govinda both annotated by Yourcenar and illustrated by Grekoff. In a few beautifully gracious lines Yourcenar entreats him to accept the proceeds probably stemming from the 1956 publication of Laevius’s Bagatelles d’Amour: ""merci Elie et je vous en prie considérez les trente huit mille qui unknown‎

One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp depicting a child's profile in lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with numbered stamp of the deluxe issue on verso some foxing. Lithograph inspired by an extract from Mes poupées by Julia Daudet. A magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential very deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft at once is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art in the same way as the deluxe illustrated book. Louis des Balbes Crillon was a famous captain who served successfully under several kings including Henri IV who called him 'The foremost captain in the world'. History remembered his valor and probity notably during the assassination of the Duke of Guise and during the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre.
