‎Very Good French Original document. (34 x 22 cm). In French. Signed by Maucotel and Deschamp. Handwritten by them. It's a certificate of guarantee given to for a Stradivarius violin made by Paolo Casteller in Genoa in 1775 to firstly Monsieur J. G. Brun, and then Claude Lebet sent the document to Gülden Turali, to the purchaser of the violin. It explains the features of the Stradivarius violin (by Paulus Castello de Genes). A certificate is given by Lebet to famous Turkish national violin player Gülden Turali in 30 October 1989. 3 color plates of a violin are authentic Paolo Casteller made in Genoa in 1775. The scrapbooks and journals were kept by freshman Ernest Walker Brown Jr. of Louisville Kentucky. Book 1: There are over 110 pages with over 200 ephemeral items including 103 photographs and 30 postcards. Along with the photos and post cards are dance cards invitations programs newspaper articles pages filled with hand written diary notes . There is an interesting silk Confederate Rebel Flag in the front and 2 interesting V.M.I. student photos showing them in their Confederate uniforms marching. There is also a large photo of the Phi Delta Theta House with Mr. Walker standing with other members of the house. Book 2: has nearly 255 pages bulging with all manner of photos tipped in letters newsclippings postcards intimately detail this young man and his life. Super period pieces. ‎VIENNA AUSTRIA WIEN THE ALPS. Good. 1929. On offer is a most remarkable handwritten journal of an Austrian mountain climber spanning the years 1929 - 1936. This busy mountain climber signed on the first page of the book - Ernst Pekar Wien Vienna member no. 10704 Gruppe Wien der Sektion Oesterr. Touristenklub des D.v. Oes.A. V. The diary of many many dozens of climbs in dozens of locales is written in German language in pencil. Initially our author writes in regular cursive script and then switches to the German fraktur in 1936. Perhaps this reflects the changes in the political scene. There are all together 240 cancellations from various Alpine lodgings and mountain tops giving the elevations and mountain some beautifully decorated with Edelweiss. Most of the stamps are in the 5 x 7" hardcover booklet as integral part of his meticulous entries some are on loose small sheets. The diary is rich in names of pathes meadows huts roads stations along the way mountain tops. The writer even kept times of how long every step of the way took. Some of the mountains he climbed - Grossvenediger 3660 m "allein am Gipfel Aussicht!! - Alone at the top View!!" Grossglockner 3792 m Schladminger Tauern Radstaetter Tauern Rax Hochkoenig Wechsel Hohe Wand Muntanitz Dolomites Italy etc. etc. etc. In 1934 he went to a mountainclimbing school. Ski trips. In between his entries are also signatures of fellow mountainclimbers. The entries abruplty end on June 7 1936 with a trip to the Hohe Veitsch. Mysteriously the very last cancellation in the book from the Oetscherhhaus 1418 m is dated in a different modern hand and dated 20.8.1963. All told there are 115 written pages 228 cancellation stamps of mountain lodgings in book some by groups like Oesterreichischer Touristenklub Oesterreichischer Gebirgsverein Deutscher Alpen-Verein Alpenvereinszweig Austria and more 4 small b&w photographs 2 pressed flowers Buschwindroeschen 3 printed pamphlets Ringwarte Sparbacherhuette Austria Nachrichten 12 cancellations on loose pieces of paper. On offer is the simply sensational original 1910 manuscript diary and superb relic of early 20th century railroad Americana based out of Tunnelton West Virginia. Uniquely this diary is written by Railroad Engineer Errett M. Graham b. June 8 1877 - d. 1974 and his wife 'Lena'. From a Women's and or Gender Studies perspective this diary is impressive: Lena a native of Irvington Indiana is an equal and impressive partner in many ways: Errett writes of his specific railroad work the politics the concerns on a technical and political level and when his wife writes we get more of the same she never fails to use her husband's diary as he would detail his duties of the day the effect of the politics on her husband and the railroad company. Of course she shares her life too but all with the backdrop of the railroad. Readers will begin to understand that the railroad is a blood and bone deep vocation and not just a job when we learn the Errett's brother Ernie is also a railroad man and he is tragically killed in Grafton West Virginia. This is truly a one of a kind journal with a one of a kind relationship in a husband and wife. Research and a more than casual reading find our 33 year old author who was a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston is ambitious and refuses to be pigeon-holed loading and repairing trains. He refers to his Johnson City based boss as 'His Lordship' and Graham's relief at his new job with more responsibilities is palpable. This diary is very full and sometimes they write upside down or crosshatch. Collectors and historians of railroad ephemera will be hard pressed to find a pair of writers so connected and involved in the middle management of railroads. He published over 100 books novels criticism essays including his most important essay "The Moral Obligation to Be Intelligent" 1915. As a writer Erskine first received acclaim with his novel "The Private Life of Helen of Troy" 1925 which was adapted to silent film by the same the name in 1927 and was directed by Alexander Korda. . My listing includes PHOTO OF ACTUAL BOOK for sale. Book Interior GOOD / Covers Very Good. Covers are white with colour photos of the stamps lettering blue/black/red. Spine is slightly cocked solid not sunned has a few tiny chips at head and toe. Covers are flat clean bright some corners have a crease but aren’t bent corner some vertical creases beside spine on front a number of small creases and flex marks as to be expected in an old paperback a bit of edge wear over the years some of the white cover has age darkened slightly. Page edges sunned. Inside of book is clean clear. Paper has yellowed slightly no rips no stains. Page 31 has drawing coloured in. From about page 31 to back there are a few waves on the bottom 3/4 inch perhaps from an old water spot that was dried up quickly. The binding glue has dried from age and page 39 and 41 are loose.
