Covers and spine are flat clean only very light age soil front cover has one bent corner and one creased corner now flat owner’s name town in small ink letters in upper corner a few mild scratches that did not tear the paper one small white dot near top. Spine has mild soil as one would expect has a bit of wear on side edges 1/8 inch of top edge is worn away and bottom edge has a triangular wear shape which is 1/8 inch at smallest going to 1/2 inch and running into a 1 1/8 inch tear in the paper on the spine side this exposes a bit of the book sheaves. The back cover has a few old creases at corners now flat and a few small black stains at the top but other than that the back is intact. Page edges sunned. Inner covers are ads for books end papers are white. Inside of book is tight clean clear flat. All pages except the covers have quite a bit of age darkening. As you open the front cover the ffep has a slight misalignment of the glue so that it tends to open with the cover this exposes the back side of the 1 1/8 inch tear which on the inside is a closed tear of 2 1/2 inches. This Scottish cleric made his mark as a literary critic and poet best known as author of the popular poem "Bards of the Bible" 1851 as well as "Gallery of Literary Portraits" 1846 plus two sequels "Martyrs and Heroes of the Scottish Covenant" 1852 "History of a Man" 1856 and the 48-volume "Library Edition of the Briths Poets" 1846 which he edited; he's often remembered as the subject of "An Address to the Rev. George Gilfallen" the first poem penned by Scottish poet William McGonall 1825-1902. ANS 1p 5" X 8" Edinburgh Scotland 1860 January 28. Addressed to "George." Very good. This constellation of points is slightly different from what Evan Gill mentions as a known variant in his bibliography.
