HONEYWILL LESLIE CERA. C. E. R. A.
1910 - 1971 ORIGINAL FIVE 5 VOLUME MANUSCRIPT HISTORY OF SUBMARINES IN THE BRITISH ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINE SERVICE WRITTEN BY AUTHOR HISTORIAN 'PLUMBER' AND ONE OF THE FOREMOST AUTHORITIES ON SUBMARINES
Very Good. 1910. On offer is a superb group of five 5 manuscript books encompassing the history of submarines and underwater naval warfare from 1901 through to 1971. The books were handwritten and compiled in cloth covered hard bound books by British submarine authority Leslie Honeywill who was a Chief Engine Room Artificer CERA or a plumber as he jokingly called himself on a number of submarines. These are not finished published books but bound manuscripts that contain corrections amendments highlighting for emphasis or when the type print was too light. Adding even further depth there are tucked and tipped in one of a kind access original photos postcards and news clippings all relating to Submarines. Very comprehensive Honeywill used a wide variety of sources over 100 referenced covering 70 years of naval history besides the breadth of his own hands on experience and personal knowledge. Historians researchers and collectors of naval history will find a superb primary source as few people on earth had the experience or other qualities needed to record this history with such authority. The volumes are split as follows: 1. 1901 - 1911; 2. 1911 - 1919; 3. 1919 - 1939; 4. 1939 - 1945 and 5. 1946 - 1971. HONEYWILL LESLIE CERA. C. E. R. A.
1923 - 1945 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A LIFE UNDERWATER FROM THE UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE OF THE ENGINE ROOM WRITTEN BY A BRITISH ROYAL NAVY WARRANT ENGINEER HISTORIAN AUTHOR AND 'PLUMBER'
Very Good. 1923. On offer is a super manuscript relic of one man's life spent in the Royal Navy serving in submarines for 22 years. Titled 'SHUT OFF FROM DIVING 1923-1945 The Ramblings of a Plumber' the book was written by British Warrant Engineer Leslie Honeywill who was a Chief Engine Room Artificer CERA or a plumber as he jokingly called himself on a number of submarines. Leslie writes in his intro: 'The material used in this story has been extracted from diaries written during the period covered. It is thus chronological and consequently rather disjointed in its presentation. It will have little interest except to submariners and probably not a lot for those who are or were. It contains no excitements but is an attempt to portray how one submariner enjoyed life met and overcame problems enjoyed the companionship of some wonderful friends - if the contents are mainly connected with the engine room department that of course was my particular concern but we were a team from the youngest seaman to the CO and no one could have wished for a more satisfying life.' The 463 page book on large typed paper is overall VG. We offer separately Honeywill's history of submarines - 0002026; book titled 'PERISCOPE PERSONALITIES 1901-1972' - 0002029 and another book titled 'SUBMARINE DEPOT SHIPS BASES & SUPPORT SHIPS' - 0002028.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF LESLIE HONEYWILL BRITISH ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINES ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINE SERVICE RNSS SUBMARINERS SEAMEN SAILORS NAUTICAL MARINE NAVAL COMBAT AT SEA C.E.R.A. HONEYWILL LESLIE CERA. C. E. R. A.
1972 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT BOOK: 'SUBMARINE DEPOT SHIPS BASES & SUPPORT SHIPS' WRITTEN BY A BRITISH ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINER HISTORIAN AUTHOR AND 'PLUMBER'
Very Good. 1972. On offer is an original 1972 manuscript book titled 'SUBMARINE DEPOT SHIPS BASES & SUPPORT SHIPS' written by British Warrant Engineer Leslie Honeywill who was a Chief Engine Room Artificer CERA or a plumber as he jokingly called himself on a number of submarines. Leslie Honeywill published many articles and books on naval subjects he was Chief Engine Room Artificer born in St John Pembroke Dock in 1899 and died in 1979. He became a leading authority on Submarine Navy subjects and after the war was consulted by High Ranking Navy officers. The preface which describes this book manuscript is as follows: "Among the many books written about submarines one often comes across a reference to submarine depot ships bases parent ships tenders and support ships. This compilation is an attempt to pay tribute to the crews of those vessels which have rendered such faithful service to respective generations of submariners. Since the construction of Holland I for the Royal Navy in 1901 about 50 major ships. etc; have been employed on submarine support duties; in addition there is a host of lesser units and shore establishments which have played a no less important part. Many of the 'older' supports have been perpetual at 'Dolphin' by having their names allotted to blocks of buildings there:- Hazard Rosario and Pandora spring to mind. The larger units have been arranged chronologically whilst the lesser but none the less essential ones have been arranged alphabetically in an Appendix. Naturally many important events have never been recorded but older submariners may derive some pleasure in filling in the gaps when 'reminiscing' on these faithful old 'Mums'. Provenance: this came from the library of R. Honeywill and has the label inside cover. There is also a write up about Leslie Honeywill from the Wolborough Newton Abbot Parish magazine 1979. The 244 page 8 x 10 inch book is overall VG.
