‎HORACE G. CHASE‎

‎1844 HANDWRITTEN DIARY OF A 17 YEAR OLD BOSTON BOY DETAILING THE LIFE OF YOUNG MAN AND THE POLITICS OF THE DAY‎

‎BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1844. On offer is an original 1844 manuscript diary handwritten by Horace G. Chase of Boston Massachusetts. Mr. Chase is 16 years old when he starts detailing his daily life on July 2nd turning 17 only six days later on the 9th. In a half ream 22 leaves 'Quarto Post' purchased in New Hampshire Chase writes densely even using the rear endpaper his observations travels and opinions. Horace keeps his sailboat at Liverpool Wharf and in one of his early entries proves himself to be a charming fellow for the most part given how eruditely he writes of being thankful for a very fine and pleasant day that could only have been made more pleasant if he had the company of his parents. Another time he notes after a rough day: "Three cheers for home." Later on another side of his character is revealed: "The Democrat boys and the coon boys had their grand torch light procession. I saw the Whigs and they lookedreaching the whole length of Tremont St almost. They had quite a skirmish with some rowdys." Horace relishes the politics of the day and 1844 was eventful but as with any hard working teenager of the time he works in the shop eats a lot of ice cream walks with his friends Enoch and John visits Colonel and Mrs. Chase uncle and aunt perhaps and spends a fair bit of time at the Library with his friends. Horace rarely fails to mention visitors and place names throughout including John Kieth Captain Green Dr. Savony S. Stinson Mr. Jenney plus many many more. The diary ends when he is reunited with his Father and brother Charley on December 23rd at Concord. Save for some staing to the cover and a few pages the book is overall G.; English; 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall; BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS PRE CIVIL WAR PRE ABOLITION WHIGS DEMOCRATS RACE RELATIONS SLAVERY AUTOGRAPH HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT antiquit contrat vlin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigedad hecho vitela documento Manuscrito HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY . unknown‎

‎HORACE R. HOBART‎

‎1895 - 1912 FIVE 5 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK JOURNALS BELONGING TO HORACE HOBART NOTED CHICAGO JOURNALIST AND FOUNDING EDITOR OF THE STILL-PUBLISHED RAILWAY AGE MAGAZINE‎

‎CHICAGO ILLINOIS IL. Good. 1895. On offer is a fantastic group of notebook journals that belonged to Horace R. Hobart. Hobart led a long and illustrious life in newspapers gazettes and magazines. Born in 1839 he was a Wisconsin Cavalry Quartermaster in the Civil War starting in 1861 until being wounded in Arkansas. Beginning in 1866 he wrote for the Chicago Tribune as a reporter than was Editor of Chicago Evening Post 1867-1870 Co-founder of the Chicago Evening Mail 1871-1873 Editor of Chicago Evening Post 1873 again editor and 1/2 owner of Daily Journal in Jacksonville IL 1874-1875 editor of the Chicago Morning Courier 1875 and finally one of the Founding Editor of Railway Age 1875 onwards which continues to be published to this very day. The notebooks range from the year 1895 - 1912. Many entries are related to expenses including other personal expenses when in Chicago Hyde Park and Evanston IL plus personal notes regarding the train trips his house construction a few jokes people he writes many names. Also included are notes regarding his work at Railway Age. This is extremely interesting as it documents his trips down the block to his trips to Europe Mexico and around the United States. For the most part Hobart seems to have used these notebooks as records of his finances He documents his expenses what he ate and did on the trips costs of tickets comments on rooms at hotels costs of various items for example: 50 cent haircuts to his Vassar College tuition payment of $300 for his daughter Helen and $10 to his wife to pay the maid. But there are plenty of more personal notes that read like more traditional diary entries especially the death of his brother. Many rail lines are mentioned; Chicago Railway Philadelphia Electric and others. He also is proud of his service and documents his service as seen below. He also discusses "pedigree" and some potential pre-revolutionary relatives. He fishes in FL and golfs in Augusta GA and FL Mexico. Each journal is completely or mostly filled with entries. Most of the entries are done in pencil and written in fairly tiny script. I would estimate that there are at least 20 pages of diary entries some fill a page others while others are brief yet many like his lists of expenses or of the train timetables. His writing can occasionally be a challenge to decipher especially in some of the earlier notebooks where the pencil has smudged. All journals are on the very small side measuring 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches with the smallest being 3 1/2 x 2 inches. The covers are in various states of wear but are still structurally sound. One journal 1902 - 1906 is without a front or back cover and one journal 1911 - 1912 has a cover that reads: G. Kollbrunner. Papeterie. Bern. Marktgasse 14. All the journals have Hobarts name and the years in which they represent. Mostly it documents his rail trip in Geneva Switzerland to Belgium. Text: Sunday March 24/1907. Taken with chills and fever. Several chills. Foot swollen and bothersome. Saw Dr. Webster. Said I had rheumatic gout. Went back to house and have stayed home with prospect of staying more.; Friday April 12. Went out of the house and to city for first time since Mar. 24. The 19th day of confinement. Foot still a little swollen but otherwise seem to be well.; Mar. 16 1911. Took Mrs. H. to nursing home to be treated for bronchial cough. 5 guineas a week. Attending physician Dr. Chalmers.;; Aug 25 1912. Left for Santa Fe b/c sickness of brother.; Aug. 31 1912. Edward F. Hobart died. Age 78 years 10 months. OVERALL: G.; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF HORACE R. ‎Amsterdam Amstelaedami Ap. R. et G. Wetstenios 1719. 12mo. 2142 blank p. Vellum 12.5 cm Ref: Schweiger 2407; Graesse 3354 Details: 4 thongs laced through the joints. Title engraved by J. Wandelaar Condition: Vellum age-tanned. Both pastedown detached. Right margin slightly thumbed. Engraved title coloured with watercolours. Some old ink underlinings. Faintly waterstained Note: This booklet was produced for schoolboys and educated men able to read Latin but not to be bothered with philological niceties. The Wetsteins had already published an important Horace edition of the English genius Richard Bentley for scholars in Amsterdam in 1713. In a short note p. 5 the 'typographus' Wetstein tells the reader that this booklet offers all that is to be desired for little money paucis accipe. The odes he says are preceded sometimes by an indication of the metre 'ex mente A. Manutii' to make scansion especially for schoolboys tirones easy. For the constitution of the text he follows Daniel Heinsius and Tanaquil Faber. The 'variae lectiones' of Richard Bentley are printed in the lower margins to enable the reader to choose for himself. The works of the Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus 65-8 B.C. have enjoyed a continuous presence in European culture. Till well into the 20th century he stood central in school curricula. Earlier in the Middle Ages he was next to Vergil the most important school author. Horace is transmitted in around 300 medieval manuscripts. The Renaissance saw the beginning of a flood of editions. 'For Neo-latin poetry until modern times and for all the vernacular literature of Europe from the 16th through the 18th centuries Horace provided the dominant model both for private lyrics celebrating wine and love and for public lyrics celebrating affairs of state'. Young poets used Horace to learn the trade. 'Horace's elegant rationalism and moral wisdom and also his disabused and tolerant tone made his poems favorite reading during the Enlightenment'. Woodcut initials Condition: Title slightly soiled; ownership entry on the title; right lower corner very faintly waterstained Note: The works of the Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus 65-8 B.C. have enjoyed a continuous presence in European culture. The Classical Tradition Cambr. Mass. 2010 p. 454/60 The humanist scholar Laevinius Torrentius or in Dutch Lieven van der Beke the editor of this 1608 edition was appointed bishop of Antwerp in 1576. He was not only a theologian but also a philologist a combination prelate and scholar which was not rare in the Renaissance. In his youth he contributed to an edition of Varro's 'De Lingua Latina' Rome 1554. And in 1578 he published with Plantin a valued edition of the Roman historian Suetonius with his commentary. In a letter to Muretus Torrentius declared that his edition with commentary of Horace was ready in 1580 soon after the Suetonius but that the war between the Spaniards and the Dutch republic was an obstacle for publication by Plantin. Later 1587 he wrote in a letter that the work on Horace was done except for a commentary on the 'Ars Poetica'. Torrentius' Horace was posthumely published by the successor of Plantin his grandson Balthasar Moretus in 1608. For the lacking part the 'Ars Poetica' the publisher used the text and commentary which had been produced by Petrus Nannius 1500-1557 born in Alkmaar and later also rector of the Latin School of that city. In 1539 he came to Leuven to teach on the 'Collegium Buslidianum'. His inaugural lecture there was on the 'Ars Poetica' of Horace. In the preface to the text of the 'Ars Poetica' in the 1608 edition p. 767/68 written by Valerius Andreas 1588-1655 we are told that a text and a commentary of the 'Ars Poetica' which had been produced in Leuven by Nannius never saw the light and that he edited Nannius' work digessi et recensui after having received a copy through the kind offices of his teacher Andreas Schottus a Jesuit and humanist friend of Torrentius to complete the edition of Torrentius. Andreas was a student at the same Collegium where Nannius had taught some 50 years before. Torrentius was also an accomplished neolatin poet be it that his poetry is predominantly religious. His laudatory hymn on Balathasar Gerards who murdered the protestant Prince of Orange the Dutch 'Pater Patriae' in 1584 made him notorious in the Netherlands Provenance: In ink on the title: 'Bibliothecae Augustin: Angiae comparavit L. De Hou. . 1710'. This book bought in 1710 originates probably from the library of the 'Schola Latina' founded by Augustine monks in 1537 in the Flemish city Edingen nowadays the Walloon municipality Enghien located in the Belgian province of Hainaut. The Roman name of the town was 'Angia'. The school 'Collge Saint-Augustin' still exists. Gilt short title in second compartment. Sebastian Henripetrus' woodcut printer's mark on the title depicting a rock on which a hand from heaven strikes fire with a hammer. The fire is aroused by a human head a cloud blowing from the sky. The second printer's mark on the verso of the last leaf is a simpler version of the image now with the addition of the name of the printer 'Sebastian Henric Petri'; the 2 letters 'n' in the name 'Sebastian Henric Petri' are strange enough cut backwards mirrorwise. Woodcut initials. Printed in 2 columns. The poems of Horace printed in a beautifull Roman letter are surrounded by commentary printed in italics thus more or less suggesting the layout of a medieval manuscript Condition: The foot of the spines somewhat chafed. The front flyleaf has gone. Title a bit soiled. Old name on the title. Occasional yellowing paper. Occasional some faint and small waterstains. Small wormhole in the blank right upper corner of some 80 leaves not affecting text. The binder erroneously switched leaf Ee1 and Ee6 Note: The works of the Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus 65-8 B.C. have enjoyed a continuous presence in European culture. His memorable phrases made him the most quoted ancient author. The Classical Tradition Cambr. Mass. 2010 p. 454/60 This edition of Horace is a kind of 'Variorum' edition. It offers the observations and emendations of 40 Horace scholars old and new including the commentaries of the scholiasts Helenius Acron and Porphyrius. It does not break new ground Lambinus seems not to exist but it is a real treasure chest for Horatian philology supplying all what is worth knowing of Horace and his poetry. It is a reissue of the edition of 1555 which was produced by the German classical scholar Georg Fabricius 1516-1571. 'Seine Ausgaben von Vergil Horaz und Ovid zeichnen sich nicht nur durch philologische Akribie aus sondern sind auch wegweisend fr die Interpretation'. NDB 4734 A remarkable feature of this edition is the space which is attributed to the Ars Poetica. Commentaries treatises on the AP by Landinus Luisinus Grifolus Lucinianensis Iason & Gabriel de Nores Parrhasius Amarbachius & Freigius fill almost a quarter of the book. It is a pity that Robertello's work on the Ars Poetica was not included. Still this 1580 edition is declared to be indispensable by Dr. Harwood: 'This is the great treasure of learning bestowed on Horace. My learned and worthy friend Dr. Parr one of the best classical scholars in this kingdom many years ago informed me of the distinguished merit of this edition. It contains the observations and remarks on Horace which were made by the great scholars of that illustrious age the glorious age of the revival of literature as well as the criticism of all the old commentators on Horace Acron Porphyrion &c'. E. Harwood 'A view of the various editions of the Greek & Roman classics' 4th ed. London 1790 p. 221/222 Provenance: Name on the title of 'R. Alberda'. This must be a 'Reynt Alberda' or a 'Reint' Alberda'. This christian name is the most frequently used name for men in the Alberda family of Northern Dutch gentry so it is hard to say who this might be. Prize gone all four silk fastening ribbons also gone. Right lower corner of the first 100 p. very slightly stained Note: The works of the Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus 65-8 B.C. have enjoyed a continuous presence in European culture. His memorable phrases made him the most quoted ancient author and his elegance his moral wisdom humour and tolerance made him favourite reading and suitable for schoolboys. Till well into the 20th century he stood central in school curricula. Already in antiquity Horace's works were widely studied in ancient schools. Occasional references by later authors demonstrate the continuity of this school tradition allthough Christian authors admired his form but distanced themselves from his pagan thoughts. The Carolingian age saw him once again become a school author. Later in the Middle Ages he was next to Vergil the most important school author. Horace is transmitted in around 300 medieval manuscripts. During the Renaissance Horace's fame expanded itself together with humanism throughout Europe. This period saw the beginning of a flood of editions. The Classical Tradition Cambr. Mass. 2010 p. 454/60 This title was originally published for the education of the Dauphin Delphinus the young crown prince of France the future king Louis XV. Great care was bestowed on the editing and printing of the series of classical authors. 39 editions of Latin authors from Cicero to Ausonius also difficult ones like Festus and Manilius were published by leading or promising French scholars. The editions were also meant for a broad public offering introductions reliable and readable texts easy interpretations and philological educational and historical notes without too much philological niceties or textual criticism. The series was a huge success. This particular edition of Horace was first published in Paris in 1691. Desprez did not spent much effort editing this Horace. 'La critique textuelle sur Horace est relativement conformiste au 17e sicle; les lments textuelle de base de l'tablissement du texte restent l'dition de Lambin et celle d'Heinsius. . Il n'est pas impossible que Desprez ait repris les notes dj existentes des rudits qui s'etaient attels ce travail avant lui et qu'il n'ait pas cherch les approfondir mais plutt les mettre en forme' 'La collection in usum Delphini' p. 487/88 Occasionally Desprez omitted some 'obscoena' limiting himself to words like 'cunnus'. The commentary can be called accessible extensive and detailed. Desprez' edition saw many reissues well into the 19th century. Louis Desprez was professor of rhetoric 'au collge Cardinal Lemoine' and edited for the Dauphin series also Juvenal and Persius 1684. The Horace edition in Delphin Series was a success. The bibliographies mention many reissues. Still this first Dutch edition of 1695 was apparantly not the great success the Amsterdam publisher had hoped for. For this 1695 edition was reissued in The Hague by the publisher Peter van Thol in 1708 the only difference being the title page the rest is exactly the same. The publisher Van Thol apparantly purchased unsold copies of this edition removed the title inserted a title with his own imprint and brought it on the market as a new title Provenance: Small stamp on the front flyleaf of 'De Vletter R. 'Nevertheless his criticisms were highly praised by his contemporaries and by his immediate successors'. Sandys History of Classical scholarship p. 314 Heinsius published his first edition of Horace with his notes in Leiden in 1612. It became a standard and was influencial in Holland France and Britain. The Classical Tradition Cambr. Mass. 2010 p. 454/60 The style of many of Horace's poems displays polished techniques derived from Hellenistic Greek poetry.
