‎JOHN EDWARD RANES‎

‎1942 - 1944 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND SERVICE RECORD OF ONE YOUNG IOWA MAN'S DECORATED BUT UP AND DOWN CAREER AS AN AIR GUNNER AND BOMBER‎

‎PERRY IOWA USA EUROPEAN THEATER. Very Good. 1942. On offer is a super original 1942 - 1944 manuscript relic of American World War II induction training and combat handwritten by John Edward Ranes b. April 9th 1924 from Perry Iowa. Using a 'My Life in the Service' diary very full between the dates he writes and we find a very typical 'boy-next-door' American man who proves to be an interesting diarist who is not afraid to be self effacing: he notes his pay grades unfailingly: Pvt./S.Sgt/Pvt./Sgt. which varied based on training. At one point he is shipped to Florida and rated basic engineer so he was reduced from Staff Sgt. to Private 7th grade for example. From induction in Iowa we find he is mostly Stateside for training but he ships over to England and flies bomber combat missions over Germany. At one point his bomber crashes during landing and he says he jumped out and ran like mad. Ranes writes rather detailed entries from enlistment August 13th 1942 to the War's end including his periodic physical record measuring height and weight at different times in his service; his buddies; Officers he met; civilians he met . Once he is in the combat arena the entries are sporadic but still detailed when he writes. He proudly states awards: Aerial Gunner Combat Crew wings good conduct medal bronze star for western Europe Air offensive ETO ribbon Air Medal for European operations. Besides all of his personal information and Service record there are approx. 60 pp of handwritten diary material from Nov 11 1942 to Oct 21 1944. The book proper is worn but overall G.; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JOHN EDWARD RANES PERRY IOWA COMBAT MISSIONS BOMBER PILOTS GUNNERY WORLD WAR II WW2 WORLD WAR TWO HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT AMERICANA DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY antiquit contrat vlin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito . unknown‎

‎JOHN ELLIS SHIPPAM‎

‎1909 - 1927 ORIGINAL GROUP OF FOUR 4 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY AN ENGLISHMAN RECENTLY SETTLED WITH HIS FAMILY IN SAN DIEGO DETAILING A LIFE THROUGH THE EYES OF THOSE NEWLY ARRIVED‎

‎SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA. Good. 1909. On offer is a super group of four 4 original manuscript diaries with entries dated 1909 - 1927 handwritten by a recent British immigrant to San Diego California. While the first three books are lesser and sporadically written they along with the full 4th book covering 1918 - 1927 make for an excellent detailed account of life San Diego in the early 20th Century. From references to community happenings such as a new post office opening to prices for various goods and services to one of the many earth tremors that afflict this area it offers a social historian a valuable window into the city's early life. Chock full of details of the writer's daily life casual research suggests that the writer is John Shippam who along with some family members emigrated from England in 1904 or 1905. This is supported by entries that refer to 'Cecil' his brother and 'Delia' his sister who accompanied him to The United States. There is also a reference to sending pictures back to England. Death records in San Diego CA record the burial of John E. Shippam born 1851 and deceased 1927 Included in the 1914 diary is a typed note to "Mr. Shippam". Three diaries are by North British Mercantile Insurance Company of the type printed for use by their sales people. The 4th diary is a generic diary with blank pages. The 1909 diary has only a few entries. The longest is a cash account entry detailing the seeding and planting of potatoes and beans. The diary measures 5 1/2 in by 3 in. It is in very good condition. It contains only 3 or 4 entries - some in a form of shorthand. The 1913 diary contains many more entries. Most revolve around daily work - farming in some cases and general labour in others. His June 1st entry possibly situates his brother: Cecil and I walk to San Miquel. Total of 8 miles . June 1 1914. Sold Cockerels as fryers June 3 2014. P 1914planted 4 rows of Kentucky Wonder beans . June 4. Mending fences at June 5 1914. An interesting entry is Aug 7th where he notes . Posted photos to England Aug 7 1914 A curious entry describes an altercation with police: Myself and Delia taken to the Detective's office by Detective Burwell. Delia snatched from me in the room taking me unawares into another room and cross-questioned most illegally and cruelly room being locked by a little mite of an apology for a 'woman' unfit for any other post . All because of complaint that our children draw a handcart Oct 1st 1914. The 1914 diary is about 50% completed. Entries continue around farming and general labour with entries also noting other pertinent events - Paid County Tax 2nd instalment $6.30 Mar 12 1914 It is in this volume we first encounter Jane Shippam who research shows is John Shippam's wife. Jane at Farnhams local dentist to have cast of palate taken Teeth to be made for $14.50 Apr 10 Included in the diary are 21 clipping from death notices in the local paper. They are variously dated in the early 1920's. Many of these people emigrated from the United Kingdom and once could surmise that they were known to each other. The 4th diary is 100% complete. It spans the years 1918 until 1927. The pages are bland and entries are dated as they are made. The book measures 4 1/2 in by 3 in and is in reasonable condition all pages are intact. Although densely packed with entries there is not necessarily an entry for each day. Much more detail about day-to-day life is included Delia took car out for first time. She toured the neighbourhood running 4 miles. I was in car with her. She managed well June 26 1921 This morning took our goat Goldie up to Mr. Fevros buck and paid $1.00 leaving her there. Took her away - no effect . Goldie crying so took her up to Fevros again - she mated Sept 26 - Oct 3 1921 Jane and Delia visited Dr. Wilship in consultation of Jane's illness. Diagnosis - neuritis. Bottle of and advice to keep quiet Mar 22 1922 New directory for 1923 just out. Gives estimated population of San Diego as 116876 being 8 124 short of a quarter million Aug 30 1923 A couple of minutes before 11pm was awakened by quite a heavy lurch of the house by earthquake tremor Sept 29 1924 ; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JOHN ELLIS SHIPPAM SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA SOUTHWESTERN USA WEST COAST BRITISH IMMIGRANTS WHO SETTLED IN SAN DIEGO ENGLISH IMMIGRANTS WWI WW1 WORLD WAR ONE ERA AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

‎JOHN FULLERTON‎

‎1815 - 1865 SUPER ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY ONE OF HIS AND HER MAJESTY NAVY LIEUTENANTS LIVING A LIFE RIGHT OUT OF MASTER AND COMMANDER WITH SENSATIONAL ROYAL NAVY EPHEMERA: THE LT.'S OWN COURT MARTIAL FOR MURDER‎

‎GREAT BRITAIN. Very Good. 1815. On offer is simply superb manuscript of a Royal Navy officer's exploits in the age of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". From the Napoleonic Wars through the rest of the 19th century Britain ruled the world and her instrument was the Royal Navy. This outstanding manuscript details the service of one officer who sailed to 'the far side of the world' when the Royal Navy ruled the world's seas. The manuscript is 176 pages in length and is 100% complete. All pages are typed so legibility is total. Pages are 8 1/24 by 14 inches. The pages are in excellent condition. They are enclosed in a hard cardboard folder. There are several other papers with the manuscript including one of note that will be elaborated on below. John Fullerton joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in May 1815 at 12 years of age. He began his service on HMS Larne a 20 gun corvette. Four days in he saw his first punishment: ". four dozen lashes the first punishment I had ever seen and I never yet met the person who could look upon the infliction without a shudder" p1. From that rather grim introduction he went on to serve in a series of HM ships and travelled the world. He describes his rite of passage when he first crossed the equator on Oct 11th 1819: ". All those who have not been across the Line now go below and the hatchways are guarded . and one at a time blindfolded brought up taken to the chair through a line of people who . "p. 6. He had plenty of adventures. Once after becoming acquainted with a woman in Rio de Janeiro he met a man as he left her home. After exchanging greetings: ". he politely put a knife into my left side and left it there. I gave him an equal portion of my sword and retreated to the ship hospital ." p11. With his friend Hack Hawthorn a Wild Middy p11 he often got into scrapes including one where he and some friends faced off with a Portuguese military street patrol: ". Our swords out and in less than three minutes had possion of their muskets and bayonets but obliged to decamp on board. . Jack generally got those who went on shore with him into similar scrapes." p.12. In 1821 he was commissioned a Lieutenant. His manuscript is rich in observations of places he travelled to and people he met. He mentions a collision with HMS Revolutionaire which was under command of the son of the great Royal Navy Captain Edward Pellew. p24 His descriptions are rich in detail: "I accompanied some Chilinoes to a fair in the country and races many tents with refreshments and dancing people from all parts of the country flocked and a very animated scene it was fair damsels under charge of their sweethearts or lovers and sprightly dame with her shadow not husband he playing the tender to some other man's wife" p77. He also keeps a constant mention of other ships they meet or travel with which provides a first-rate way of cross-referencing other ship's records. On Sept 9th 1827 Fullerton along with some other officers attended the theatre in Valparaiso Chile. He goes into a dispute with a Chilean sergeant which continued to escalate until he shot and killed the sergeant. After a bloody fight in the lounge area of the theatre he escaped wounded to his ship. In reprisal English officers ashore were rounded up and imprisoned. A week later he surrendered to authorities and a jailed until a Spanish court-martial could be convened. At length he was acquitted. What makes this account so historically interesting is that included with the manuscript is the typed statement of the British Consul John White who acted in his defense. The 13 page document is typed on 8 1/2 inch by 14 inch paper and is in excellent condition. It begins: "John White Esq Consul of His Britannic Majesty counsel for Lieutenant John Fullarton Royal Navy accused of having killed Sergeant Jose Maria Minos present the following to the court in justification of the act committed by the said officer ." p1. The defense makes for fascinating reading. It is accompanied by a 46 page packet containing 8 pages of handwritten notes which were part of the original draft. For a naval historian this is an outstanding description of service in the Royal Navy written by an officer with a keen eye for descriptive detail. Written at a time when the Royal Navy truly ruled the oceans of the world it is a treasure trove for information. Whether ship locations customs in foreign lands or life on board it is an outstanding primary source document. The court-martial defense is an excellent example of litigation argument in the early 19th century. It touches on key aspects of self-defense argument that forms the basis for the common law that governs millions of people today. A legal scholar or historian would follow John White's arguments with interest and pleasure.; Manuscript; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF EARLY 19TH CENTURY REGENCY MID VICTORIAN ERA LTN JOHN FULLERTON JOHN WHITE BRITISH COUNSEL IN VALPARAISO ROYAL NAVY GREAT BRITAIN ROYAL NAVY IN THE NAPOLEONIC WARS COURT-MARTIAL AGE OF SAIL AGE OF NELSON MARINE MARITIME LIFE IN A ROYAL NAVY SHIP NAVAL OFFICERS NAVIES NAVAL DISCIPLINE WARSHIPS CORVETTES NAVAL HISTORY VISITS TO FOREIGN PORTS EARLY 19TH CENTURY LITIGATION CHILE IN 1820S SAILORS - SOCIAL LIFE AND CUSTOMS HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

‎JOHN G. LEGEL JR.‎

‎1912 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND TRAVEL JOURNAL OF A YOUNG IOWA MAN DOING THE DELUXE EUROPEAN TOUR‎

‎CHARLES CITY IOWA EUROPE. Good. 1912. On offer is the handwritten travel diary of John G. Legel Jr. who is from Charles City Iowa. He sails for Europe on June 15th 1912 only two months after the sinking of the Titanic. John spends his summer touring Europe arriving back home on September 6th 1912. His diary contains almost 100 handwritten pages over 50 leaves and details his voyage over on the boat and all of his memorable events while in Europe and also the trip back. Here are snippets: Up too late for breakfast. Slept poorly. Passed three boats by 9:30 3 sails quite close. Land Africa 3 smokes sighted by 10:00. Land quite close to port side. 3 more boats there. Too thick to mention. Big rock in sight.Arrived at Gibraltar. Went ashore by the tender "Guille" of N.G.L. line. Saw a number of curio stores thick as can be. Sun very hot. Street venders of postcards newspapers fruit and flowers thick. Bot flowers and a little fruit. Also a N.Y. newspaper dated 6/20/12. Beat down the price of 2 bunches of flowers from 25 cents to 10 cents. Saw laces sold for less then half the prices first asked. Came aboard by tender at 5:30. Evening cool. Left Gibraltar at 8:30. Saw outline of opposite side of big rock. The pictures show the landward end. Too dark to see details. The lower half of the rock on the side we first saw was just covered with lights. Tried to get picture of a moor. He dodged across walk then held his hand up in front of his face. Moonlight very bright tonight. Phosphorescent lights back of boat have been very bright and numerous. Rooms changed. In with 2 others in 4th engineer's room. Two others put in room where we were." "June 26th It is reported that a woman in steerage had died and that she was buried after midnight last night. Ship pitches quite a good deal. Latest report says it was a woman in I Cabin who died. No relatives but 2 maids on board with her. Repacked to send telescope to Bremen. Saw Sardinia. Not many houses. Headlands high and mountains. Took 3 pictures of a party of 7." "June 27th Naples due about noon. Steerage people are packing and most everyone is getting ready. Series of islands and small boats galore. Landed about noon. A man from Muller took us to customs house. Never opened grips. Cab to hotel Pension Muller. Fine rooms facing bay. Tile floors. Twin beds. Living like "Lords". Dinner at 7:30 bought postcards. Bed 11:00." "June 29th Early breakfast. Up Vesuvius by Cook's route. Vesuvius to Pughaino by tram. Then by Cook's electric railway up to Cog rail pusher. Electric on up to foot of cone. Cable up to last stop 55%. Path up to brink of crater. Not bad walking. Had lunch at Erems on way back. Back to Naples about 3:30. Walked a while then cab to Muller. Cabby tried to triple meter reading instead of doubling it. We were wise but not as wise as we thought fair should have been 20 cents more then meter reading for 3 persons." "July 6th 9:00 O'clock train for Florence. Bot cheese and rolls to eat on train. Found cheese full of bugs. Arrived at Florence 2:30. Hotel Rome. Got a little lunch. Slept till dinner. Walked around main part of town." "July 9th saw ruins of Roman theatre. Beautiful view from train going up. Five miles up hill. Rather nice and plain but dark church there. Back in time for dinner. Took a little walk watched crowds and listened to a ladies orchestra. During the day only those who have to be out are on the streets but about 6 p.m. they begin to come out and by 9:00 p.m most stores are closed and the streets and caf's are crowded." His journal was a 3 " x 5" maroon tablet type diary. The pages are still attached together but the first page is almost loose and the cover is also coming loose at the spine.
