‎JOHN JAY VIETS‎

‎1863 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL HANDWRITTEN BY A PROSPEROUS EAST GRANBY CONNECTICUT BUSINESSMAN WITH THE AWFUL BACKDROP OF THE HORRIBLE CIVIL WAR‎

‎EAST GRANBY CONNECTICUT. Good. 1863. On offer is a superb diary from the Civil War era of the United States. Written in 1863 it details the daily life of a prosperous merchant in eastern Connecticut. The author does not identify himself but clues abound to his identity. Research suggests that this is the diary of John Jay Viets a Connecticut businessman who lived in East Granby Connecticut. There are a number of entries in the Memoranda section that bear the signature of J.J. Viets or John J Viets. There are a number of entries that reference town in and around East Granby including Hartford Copper Hill Simsbury and Farmington. He refers to his wife "Jane". The Boston Public Library has avolume entitled Viets Genealogy 1902 that offers persuasive evidence that the writer and J.J. Viets are one and the same person see Viets Genealogy p113 114 including the notation that J.J. Viets was married to Jane Wadsworth. The diary is chock full of personal details observations and business information. Here are some snippets: Not frozen much during the night. Seth did the chores and struck for Windsor. I have been in the store all day - Ed went to Rainbow and we drove down to Aldriches to see his stock. Muddy and wet but will dry up as the rain blows hard and it grows cold faster. Mr. Chenny has a boil on his face and Burt is sick Feb 10 . Snowed during the night. 4" and continues this morning. A.B. staid at Rollins and is about this mor. - we rode over to Brads to get the new to Rollins sleigh. Paid Brad cash for it 60 cents. Teams are out breaking roads and the snow is deep - weighed cattle part of time A.B bot over Weighed 3740 3830 . Mar 9 Started for Springfield. with me - took Gains Bot Books and settled Recd 21108 Paid CE at the funeral of Aunt Rosanna which we attended on the return home twenty dollars and the Bal to myself and his father Bot a Box Wahoo Bitters from Jas. O Allen on commission Staid at home after the exorcism May 19 He was active in his communities politics and notes in the Memoranda section: at a meeting of the republicans at the town of E Granbyheld at Pains Hotel Jan 19th. Jeremy Holbank Chairman JJ Viets Scribe . The record is signed John J. Viets. The Accounts section provides extensive details of sums earned and paid creditors and debtors and accounts settled. All of his events take place against the backdrop of the American Civil War and the diary makes some oblique references to it: . news from the army is bad this eve - Hooker is reported this side of the river. May 7 He is referring to General Joseph Hooker who had just suffered a stunning defeat at the Hands of General Robert E. Lee at Chancellorsville on May1-3. It was in fact one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War. The river refers to the Rappahannock River in VA where the battle was fought. On June 29th he notes 22nd regiment arrived in Hartford from the seat of war. Ought to staid there for the present to put down with raid of rebels in This is a reference to the 22nd Connecticut Infantry which was raised in Hartford CT earlier in the war. After serving nearly a year it was returned to Hartford in late June 1863 and mustered out of service July 7th. For a historian this is a goldmine. The writer is a well-educated successful business man who is able to carefully record important happening in his family business and community. It is an excellent window into life in a small Union community midway through the American Civil War. The diary measures 7 1/2 inches by 3 inches. The cover is leather and shows some wear. The 158 pages within are in good condition. The diary is 100% complete and includes a wealth of additional information in the entries in the Memoranda section.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JOHN JAY VIETS EAST GRANBY CONNECTICUT REPUBLICAN PARTY HARTFORD AMERICAN CIVIL WAR BATTLE OF CHANCELLORSVILLE 22ND CONNECTICUT INFANTRY GENERAL JOSEPH HOOKER AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover‎

‎EAST GRANBY SIMSBURY LAMINGTON CONNECTICUT CT 1863. On offer is an original 1863 Civil War manuscript diary handwritten by we believe by John Jay Viets of East Granby Connecticut. Not identified by his ownhandthere are a number if clues most assuredly identify as such and local historians and researchers of Hartford County Connecticut should have little problem confirming. There are a number of clues such as the death of his Aunt Abi Fuller Case the widow of Mamry or Manny Case and an online biography provides: "John Jay Viets was born in Simsbury East Granby in 1806. He was in business for a number of years in his native town dealing extensively in general merchandise. Though a Republican in a strong Democratic town he was often called upon to take an active part in public affairs; and his ability was generally recognized. His death occurred December 10 1885. He was married in 1851 to Jane Wadsworth of Lamington Conn. daughter of Timothy Wadsworth. and a direct descendant of William Wadsworth who was one oi the first settlers of Hartford coming thither with the Rev. Mr. Hooker from the vicinity of Dorchester. Her mother's maiden name was Strong. Mrs. Jane Wadsworth Viets died at the age of sixty-one years sixteen days after her husband's demise. They reared three children: Jennie A. wife of O. L. Livesey now living in California near Los Angeles; : Hubert Wadsworth Viets proprietor and manager of a large steam laundry in La Crosse. Wis." He mentions Copper Hill Hartford Fox Hole Farmington North Britain Pleasant Valley and Spoonville but assuredly he lives in East Granby. He writes: "At a meeting of the Republicans of the town of E. Granby held at Pains Hotel January 19th. Jeremy H. Holcomb Chairman. J. J. Viets scribes the following persons were appointed delegates to the several conventions forth coming." He lists numerous names of the men holding the different positions for their committee. Also in the back are several handwritten expense and account pages and all of them seem to be signed by J. J. Viets. The author also owned a store and these are the accounts for that store. He also mentions Jane his wife in the diary and the children. The diary is full with an entry for every day of the year. There is talk of the war lots of talk concerning his business as a merchant and also other events around the town of East Granby. ‎JOHN JENKINS to COL. JOHN JENKINS‎

‎1802 ORIGINAL SIGNIFICANT MANUSCRIPT RELIC OF EARLY PENNSYLVANIA POLITICS AND POLITICKING IN WASHINGTON CITY BY ONE JOHN JENKINS TO HIS RENOWNED RELATIVE COLONEL JOHN JENKINS BACK HOME IN LUZERNE COUNTY‎

‎LUZERNE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA WYOMING COUNTY 1802. On offer is a significant original manuscript relic of Pennsylvania state history dated City of Washington January 20 1802 a mere 27 or so years after the first and second Continental Congresses in 1774 and 1775 and 15 years after Statehood. Handwritten by John Jenkins to the renowned Colonel John Jenkins b.1751 the author's father or brother most likely. The letter reads in part "letter from new York restating our position and had to attend on business.Eleventh day hereour petition are not yet presented to Congress Judge Baron from StarkbridgeI have given out a number of our coppays of our petition likely regarding the Compromise Act of 1799 to the members of Congress so as to give them a fair understanding of the subject one of the members from Pennsylvania informed me in conversation that they that is the members from Pennsylvania would oppose the petition as it would destroy the Scranton ___." On the reverse side it is stamped with "WASH'N CITY" and "JAN 3" along with "PAID" addressed to Col. John Jenkins Luzerne County Pennsylvania. Another Jenkins name in addition to John is written at the bottom of the page left B. ___Jenkins. Local historians and researchers will no doubt have little problem sorting out the authorship and relationship of the three Jenkins' who are named. HISTORICAL NOTES: from the book WILD YANKEES: Compromise of 1799 "In the spring of 1799 Pennsylvania made the first in a series of moves that would ultimately resolve land disputes in an around the Wyoming Valley. On April 4 the state assembly passed the Compromise Act which allowed settlers that held Connecticut deeds that predate the Trenton Decree to obtain Pennsylvania titles to their lands. The legislation established a three-man-commission empowered to assess the legitimacy of settlers' claims survey their tracts and ascertain their value. Settlers who had their Connecticut deeds confirmed by the commissioners had to pay depending on the value of their farms between eight cents to two dollars per acre in eight annual instalments. The proceeds from these sales went toward defraying the cost of compensating Pennsylvania claimants who lost property to Connecticut settlers. As with the Confirming Act of 1787 the new law encouraged Connecticut claimants holding deeds issued before 1783 to move toward reconciliation with the state and to turn their backs of settlers who held titles issued after the Trenton Decree. After some initial hesitation the lure of secure titles at low prices assured the act's acceptance among Yankee settlers in the fifteen Susquehannah Company towns established before the Trenton Decree. These settlements covered the Wyoming Valley and adjacent lands." BIO NOTES: From one online source: "Col. John Jenkins was the son of John Jenkins a magistrate and surveyor. Responsive to the first whisper of independence the people of the valley assembled in town meeting to proclaim their hearty approval of the movement. The presiding officer at that meeting was Col. Jenkins; he was moderator and in common with the other patriots assembled devoted their lives and their sacred honor to the great cause of their fellow-man. Of that meeting and its resolves in behalf of liberty Hon. Charles Miner has well said: "I would rather have those patriotic votes to show as the work of an ancestor of mine than the proudest patent of nobility ever granted by a king." Col. John Jenkins was appointed tax collector but was enrolled for military duty and was actively employed from first to last. He served the people with ability and fidelity in the Connecticut general assembly when this was Westmoreland county. His neat and accurate records of surveys from Wilkes-Barre extending a considerable distance into New York are the never-failing authority of civil engineers to this day. He was a democrat and nearly worshiped his ideal Thomas Jefferson while his friend and much a close companion in all those times that tried men's souls Col. John Franklin was an enthusiastic federalist. Here their political lines parted but on the great question of liberty and human rights they were as the steel and magnet. Of his capture while on a scouting expedition near Wyalusing has been told on a preceding page. After a long and cruel captivity he returned and was the first to bring positive information of the invasion. The joy of the people at his safe return was turned to sudden gloom by the cloud then seen to be gathering in the north. He had been only recently married when captured. Mrs. Bertha Jenkins lived to the age of eighty-four years; died in 1841." History of Luzerne County Pennsylvania H. C. Bradsby Editor S. B. Nelson & Co. Publishers 1893. The 13" by 8" letter is missing a 1 by 1 inch square at the bottom middle section and has another " square almost halfway down center.
