‎JOHN RING ROYAL MARINE‎

‎1914 - 1918 WW1 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN JOURNAL OF A ROYAL MARINE STATIONED AND PATROLLING IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND EAST INDIES CONTAINING BOTH DETAILED AND FASCINATING DIARY ENTRIES OF AND COMPREHENSIVE LISTS OF NAVAL FACTS AND FIGURES‎

‎HMS FOX HMS PROSERPINE RED SEA INDIA EAST INDIES. Good. 1914. On offer is a detailed and eclectic book made by John Ring a Royal Marine Number 1520 during World War 1 on the H.M.S. Fox and H.M.S. Proserpine. The book contains journal entries of Rings time on the H.M.S. Fox in active duty and experiencing naval warfare. His entries are presented in a fairly matter-of-fact way with few sentence breaks. For example: H.M.S. Fox 9th June 1915. Join H.M.S. Fox at Ismailia on the 9th and stayed at at Ismailia from June 9th until the 1st of August and went from thier to the Great Bitter Lake and remained their until August 20th and then sailed for Suez and arrived in Suez on Aug 22nd and stayed their until Aug 31st and then left Suez for the Great Bitter Lake and remained their for a week and while we were their we captured two Turkish mines and kept them on board our ship for a night or two and about two mornings afterwards Sept 4 we towed them 4 Hundread miles from the Ship and about one hour after The Signal was made from our ship to press the Button and about two days later we found another Turkish mines and also did the same to that. For the rest of 1915 Ring is one the Fox as it patrols the area Suez Canal area from the canal to Port Said. From the Fox Ring moves to the H.M.S. Proserpine. On the Proserpine Ring does much of the same as he did on the Fox patrolling the Suez Canal rescuing ships that have run aground and occasionally coming into combat: The natives fired back to us and in their firing about the fourth round it was reported that the gunner was blown over and killed and another man had his arm blown off. The ship stays on the Shatt-al-Arab River for 4 months than leaves for India first docking at Bombay and then moving on to Colombo. While we were at Colombo we went to the Royal Naval Camp at Diyatalawa Ceylon and their are some interesting places to go at Ceylon about 200 years from the camp were were at was the Camp while the Boer War was on they sent the prisoners to Ceylon and another place was Little England. After this last diary entry the book takes on a less narrative identity. The rest of the journal consists of page after page of incredibly interesting and comprehensive lists of things concerning military casualties and other matters. The lists contain headings such as Norwegian Ships Sunk Enemys Lost Airships British Steamers Torpedoed and Sunk British Ships Sunk by German Raiders Soldiers Deaths in Quelling Rebellion concerning the 1916 Irish Rebellion commonly referred to as Easter Rising These are Marine Officers lost in the Battle he does not write it but he is referring to the Battle of Heligoland Bight the first naval battle of WW1 H.M.S. Ships Lost and Sunk in the Great War and many other lists of naval ships lost in the war usually containing the name of the ship the size in tonnage the date commissioned and/or destroyed and occasionally the crew size type of guns used and/or the name of the Captain. There are long lists of ships sunk from almost all the Allied Power countries. There are also news stories about the hanging of Sir Roger Casement the sinking of the Dreadnought Leonardo Da Vinci the H.M.S. King George VII and other stories related to the war copied down probably word for word from a newspaper. Though Ring was born in Essex the stories of Sir Roger Casement and the entry about the deaths in the Irish rebellion make it seem that Ring might have had some Irish sympathies or was possibly just interested in the Rebellion as a military matter. There are also about two dozen loose pieces of ephemera include with the book dealing with John Rings entire life and career the earliest dated 1896 and the latest 1955. Included are: A Naval Marriage Certificate of John Ring to Margaret Carr from 1920 on board the H.M.S. Hercules; 2 certificates of service detailing Rings entire military career from 1905-1932 with the earlier certificate showing a complete list of the ships Ring served on from 1905 to 1924 both certificates contain much personal information including Date and Location of Birth Religion Next of Kin and physical characteristics; many newspaper clippings concerning WW1 and WW2 with quite a few political cartoons as well. The book is in very good condition without any noticeable signs of wear and tear. For an unknown reason the cover reads O.R. Wace H.M.S. Swiftsure East Indies. Rings service record has no record of him stationed on the Swiftsure. The handwriting is clean and easy to read. It is 84 pages in length.; Manuscript; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JOHN RING ROYAL MARINE MARINE NUMBER 1520 H.M.S FOX H.M.S. ‎JOHN ROBERTSON‎

‎1870 - 1875 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG CENTRAL WISCONSIN FARMER WHO CHRONICLES THE TOILING AND TIMES OF A RURAL LIFE IN AMERICA'S DAIRYLAND‎

‎TOMAH WISCONSIN. Good. 1870. On offer is an excellent detailed record of farming in the US mid-west in the later 19th century. This diary is absolutely full of minute detail of farming life over a nearly 5 year period from 1870 to 1875. Written in central Wisconsin the diary is in very good condition. It measures 5 1/2 inches by 3 3/4 inches and has 120 undated pages and the diary is 100% complete. The handwriting is very good and quite legible. John Robertson is a young farmer living near the community of Tomah WI. Along with working his own farm he helps his father on the family farm as well as various neighbours. Entries take the form of essentially 1-line comments about the principal activitys of the day. They begin in October 1870 and extend to May 1875. Mostly they detail the unending tasks necessary to keep a farm running: "Drawed stone firewood chopped wood for father" Mar 25 1870; "I dragged 1/2 day . sowed wheat at grs grandfathers" Apr 17 1870; "Cut some of fathers oats David I raked up and bound my oats 3/4 day . "Aug4 1870. Life followed seasons with land being prepared crops sown and tended to harvests completed. Wood had to be chopped fences mended tools and implements repaired etc: "I went to woods for steer. Got it" Dec 5 1870; "Fixed my Sleigh" Dec8 1870. He notes local events of importance: "Went to town for election" Apr 4 1871; "Went to town. Election" Mar 7 1874. Social events are noted such as when he made arrangements for a barn-raising bee at his farm: "Had my Bee. Had 48 hands helped me had dance at night" May 26 1874. He notes his wedding to Maggie McMullins: "Went to Joe McMullins all of us My wedding got Married at Night" Jan 1 1875. This is an excellent chronicle of daily life on a mid-western farm during the 1870's. For a historian examining rural life at that time it is rich in specific facts and information. Although the entries are brief and often terse the sheer number of them provide a fine perspective of life at that time.; Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 19TH CENTURY 1870S "GILDED AGE" UNITED STATES CENTRAL WISCONSIN WISCONSIN CRANBERRY COUNTRY JOHN ROBERTSON TOMAH WI MONROE COUNTY RURAL LIFE IN WISCONSIN FARMING LIFE US MID-WEST FARMING OPERATIONS AGRICULTURE LOCAL HISTORY THE BADGER STATE AMERICA'S DAIRYLAND BARN RAISING BEE WORK FROLICS RURAL TRADITIONS IN 19TH CENTURY AMERICA RURAL COMMUNITY LIFE MARGARET JANE MCMULLEN EARLY SETTLERS IN TOMAH AREA MONROE COUNTY PIONEERS AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

‎JOHN ROWE‎

‎1862 - 1865 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT PRE-CONFEDERATION CANADA WEST 'LETTERS BOOK' DETAILING ONE CANADIAN'S DESIRE TO FIND HIS TRUE LOVE AND FIND ADVENTURE AS A VOLUNTEER IN THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR: BUCHANAN'S 13th BATTALION‎

‎HAMILTON PORT STANLEY AMHERSTBURG CANADA WEST. Good. 1862. Hardcover. On offer is a remarkable 1862 - 1865 original handwritten manuscript 'letters book' wherein the author Mr. John Rowe residing in Hamilton Ontario for the most part has kept a meticulous record of his correspondence to friends family business associates and intimates. Local collectors and historians of Canadiana relating to Canada West Ontario Hamilton the Niagara area and the author's hometown of Port Stanley and Canada's attitudes and involvement in the American Civil War will delight in the treasure trove of historic content in his writings and revel in the different threads of correspondence. Mr. Rowe writes of romance commerce and war. He works for the noted Isaac Buchanan of Buchanan Harris and Co. who one on-line source notes: 'In 1863 Buchanan established the 13th Battalion of the militia now the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. He gave the regiment its first colors and also coined its motto "Semper Paratus". When the 13th Battalion fought in the Battle of Ridgeway in 1866 the wounded were treated at Buchanan's estate 'Auchmar'. Almost eighty years later injured men from the RCAF would also convalesce there.' Rowe in what might seem rather telling kept copies of his love letters too; he writes to women in a courting manner but when rebuffed he can be bitter in his comments to an intimate regarding the woman and her other partners and friends. His letters professing love to 'Lizzie' from Toronto are classic. Then there is the American Civil war and his keen interests in militaria; firearms drilling and action. John corresponds with a very diverse group: Capt John Brown No. 4 Co. 13 Batt'n V Md; his mother his sister in Stoke Devonport England; Grace Rosevear of Guelph Schell of Campbellton and his cousin Sergeant G. Ford 2nd Battal Sco Fusilier Guards Montreal to name just a few. Mr. Rowe is a great writer and provides much detail with much personality and covers many areas with most of his correspondence making this an almost diary like collection. Here are some of the details of his participation regarding the Civil War: to his cousin Sergeant Ford Jan 14 1863: "We have formed several companies of volunteers in Hamilton. We are gazetted a "Light Infantry" and formed into a battalion of which Mr. Buchanan my governor has been appointed Lieut. Colonel. I have joined one of the camps. We were first drilled by a Guardsman Sergt major Henry. he was a splendid drill and we all liked him very much but he has been removed and we have now a Colon. Serg't of the Rifle Brigade." Later he writes: Dear Schell February 7 1863 . Pete Buchanan is ensign. Stuart enjoys the rank of Corporal. he just returned from New York where he went to see his brother who was wounded before Fredericksburg where I believe Stuart has the great honor of drinking with the Governor of Nebraska and some U.S. Generals. Since his return he is full of his exploits - dining with General Char-them-up. There is a spring meeting tonight at Mrs. Thom Clark's." As to the book condition proper someone probably a young girl or woman used pages 1 to 40 as a scrapbook glueing newspaper clippings of poems and verse to both sides of the handwritten pages. Pages 40 to 282 are all handwritten and all the letters are dated addressed and signed. This extraordinary unique book of 240 pages provides a super rendering of life in Southern Ontario at this pre-Confederation time. Condition overall is Good and would be better save for some faults to the cover the worst being chipping and some loss to the spine. Interior is good though Rowe cut some leaves out and there are some tears chips etc to the fragile onion skin type papers. This is truly a one of a kind archive of first hand history given Mr. Rowe's almost compulsive retention of his writings - lucky for us!; Manuscript; 4to - over 9" - 12" tall; PORT STANLEY CIVIL WAR WAR BETWEEN THE STATES ONTARIO CANADA WEST BUCHANAN UPPER CANADA NIAGARA PENINSULA PRE CONFEDERATION HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA ARCHIVE DIARY DIARIES CANADA CANADIANA ECONOMICS COMMERCE ONTARIO DUNDAS HAMILTON AMHERSTBURG TORONTO . hardcover‎

‎JOHN S. MANN‎

‎1853 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED ALS BY NOTED QUAKER AND STATIONMASTER OF THE COUDERSPORT PA UNDERGROUND RAILROAD‎

‎COUDERSPORT PENNSYLVANIA POTTER COUNTY 1853. On offer is an original manuscript letter handwritten by an important local Quaker reformer and Underground Railroad figure John S. Mann 1816-1879 who was a Quaker lawyer born in Chester County Pennsylvania. He was a teacher but moved to Coudersport in 1841. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1842. He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives 1866-1868 1871; School Director 1858-1872 Coudersport Burgess 1862-1865; and Editor of the Potter Journal 1874-1879. Mann was the Underground Railroad "Stationmaster" for Coudersport which was an important stop on the route used by escaping slaves. Both his home and the building where his wife's bookstore was located were used to hide slaves. The latter even had a secret room. His son Arthur said as a young boy it was "not uncommon to find a colored person at the breakfast table". This letter dated Nov 8 1853 concerns settlers on the owner's lands addressed to 'Dear Sir' but most likely to John Keating elderly land owner of much land in Potter County Pennsylvania. Mann was an agent for John Keating 1760-1856 an Irish-French immigrant who bought 200000 acres in northern Pennsylvania in 1796 and began selling it the next year. "Coudersport Nov 8 1853 Dr Sir On my return I went to your lands as you suggested and made contracts with those settlers which had not already entered into contract. I succeeded in obtaining a contract with all but two and one of them was willing to do so but his improvement had been sold at sheriff's sale and the purchaser did not live in this county. The other one refused to contract and says he will hold by possession. I am satisfied he cannot and I think Mr. Harwick ought to take his lot at his own risk as I can furnish you a purchaser who will take his contract and not ask you to guarantee the possession of any of the lots. It took me so long to get over the tract that I am unable to make out a statement of the amount due on the old contracts and so I enclose thirteen of them herewith. Will send the new contracts by next mail together with a draft of the tracts showing the amount and location of the lots sold Yours truly Jno S. Mann". A receiving notation gives Mann's name again. ‎JOHN SIMPSON FIRST MATE‎

‎1896 ORIGINAL SUPERBLY DETAILED MERCHANT SHIP'S LOG OF A VOYAGE FROM ENGLAND TO INDIA AND THEN TO HAMBURG GERMANY FOUR YEARS AFTER ITS LAUNCHING AND NINE YEARS FROM ITS DESTRUCTION‎

‎ABOARD THE USS SKIDBY. Good. 1896. On offer is a super original 1896 manuscript ship's log book covering an England to India to Germany commercial voyage aboard an one day ill fated steamship out of West Hartlepool. The ship built and owned by Ropner & Co. England would one day wreck on Sable Island Nova Scotia. We note that the future wreck would be caused by errors in command but the high quality of dutiful fulfilment of observations in this log would lead one to think Skidby a very well run ship as commanded by Captain Strachan and the author First Mate John Simpson a diligent First Officer faithfully recording the typical marine and nautical observations of every well run ship at sea and with almost surprisingly Naval like detail for a merchant vessel. Sailing to Asia through the Suez Canal the Chief Officer's Log Book covers two travel legs and a Bombay Harbour Log during a three month voyage beginning Monday February 24th 1896 to Saturday May 9th 1896 from Blyth England to Bombay India and then Hamburg Germany. Simpson's neatly penned entries include; weather and sailing conditions sick crew the stifling heat confused seas gale winds taking on water and any number of keen eyed observations. The log makes for a classic real life adventure voyage laid out in droll seasoned seaman vernacular as the staff and crew of the "Skidby" get ready to set sail through the Suez Canal and on to Bombay India. There are times when the voyage is absolutely harrowing as noted by First Mate Simpson; "Increasing head wind & rising head seas. Fresh N.W. gale with heavy seas ship pitching & launching heavily & skipping heavy water forward. All hatches securely battened down. Lashing and extra tarpaulin put on. One of the Bow Ports gave way causing water to flow into the forecastle and fore peaks. Ship pitching and straining heavily & skipping heavy seas. Brothers light about 3' distant" etc. This ship and its crew encountered at least two heavy storms that pitched the ship rolling and laboring to stay upright. First Mate makes note of the hours from 1 A.M. for each 24 hour period noting Distance Run Knots Courses Steering Compass Wind Names and Hours of those on watch McLanders Hall Duden Redford Brown Olsen Chester Winney etc. He notes the light houses they pass and the shoals to include Cape Villano Light Cape Finisterre Cape Roea Light Rounded Cape St. Vincent Trafalgar Light House Toriffa L.H. John was a noted Quaker brother and his writings include early religious writings relative to his studies then later financial transactions notes etc. plus letter copies of personal letters and many other writings and the odd scribble by some youngster. Some entries are from Massachusetts and some include signatures and/or names of priests preachers or other clergy. While we do find any ownership signature of Pulsifer he has signed his name at the end of his copy letters. The folio book proper is rusting with age and the spine cap is detached on one side the contents are better than good. Overall G. ‎JOHN THOMPSON‎

‎LATE 1800s ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN LEDGER BOOK OF A GENERAL STORE IN TUCKERSMITH ONTARIO KEEPING DETAILED AND METICULOUS NOTES ON PRICES PAYMENTS AND BALANCES OVER THE COURSE OF ALMOST 20 YEARS‎

‎TUCKERSMITH ONTARIO ON CANADA. Good. 1893. On offer is a mid to late 1800s handwritten ledger from an unnamed general store in Tuckersmith Ontario. The shop owner was John Thompson according to a note in the book. The ledger is made up of the all personal bills of the many patrons of the General Store. Presumably the many customers of the general store bought on credit and in this ledger John Thompson kept track of the prices. A normal page contains information such as who the account is of as well as what product and how much was purchased on what day: "William Allins account. Oct 16 - 2 bags flour; Oct 18 - Tea - 1; Oct 23 - Coffee Sugar - 1; Oct 30 - Flour - 1 bag Tea - 1; Nov. 6 - Coffee Sugar - 1 Flour - 1 bag;.December 18 - Sugar - 1 Raisins - 1 Tea lemons - two". The store seems to sell everything a person in rural township Tuckersmith Ontario 1871 population: 3699 might need: flour sugar pigs lumber coffee potatoes meat etc. Many pages do not contain the specific details of what was bought but contain the name of the person and a tally of costs. What seems to be the most common item bought at this store was lumber as specific pages are entirely devoted to the "Lumber Bills" of various people who bought various amounts of lumber of differing lengths and dimensions. Under a page entitled "John Leaper Lumber Bills" there are such items entered as "12 pieces 4 x 4 12 ft. lg. - 192" "44 pieces 3 x 4 16 ft. lg - 572" and "38 pieces 3 inches wide 12 ft. lg - 200." The number at the end seems to be the price charged for the wood. Most pages contain some sort of mathematical calculation done by Thompson usually no more than just adding up the varying things bought and calculating a total. These calculations are usually done in pencil and are much rougher and less organized than the other writing in the book. There are also pages in which Thompson writes down what he himself bought for the shop and the prices paid. Bills that have been closed often have large X's through them but this does not often impede the legibility of the words behind the X. In another page smaller and loose from the book there is a breakdown of the general store's finances in 1887. Beginning with "Balance due 22 dec. 1886 - $134.33" and the money he owes an employee for "nine months and a half work - $158" he adds up all the cash received each month since the beginning of the year. When he subtracts the cash received from the cash owed he comes out to an outstanding of "$61.91" ~$1550 dollars in 2016 dollars for the year a huge improvement from the year before. The ledger has financial information from a very wide array of years with the earliest being 1875 all the way up to 1893. Interestingly there is little or no chronological order to the dates meaning this ledger may have been used whenever needed not systematically over the years. The end of the ledger has many pages of seemingly comprehensive financial information. The pages titled "log for 1875" "logs 1877" and "logs 1878" are very detailed and easily readable and contain information on the bills and payments of store patrons through those years. The book is fragile. Some pages are ripped. The spine has been taped. Some pages are detached from the binding. For the most part the handwriting is easy to read especially when the writing is in ink. In more detailed parts of the ledger the handwriting can get cramped but it does not make the script completely inaccessible. ; Manuscript; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OFJOHN THOMPSON TUCKERSMITH ONTARIO DETAILED STORE FINANCES LATE 19TH CENTURY ACCOUNTING CAPITALISM IN LATE 1800s RURAL GENERAL STORE RURAL ONTARIO COMPREHENSIVE FINANCES AND ACCOUNTING RETAIL COMMERCE ECONOMY 19TH CENTURY RURAL ECONOMICS LUMBER SALES CANADIANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO DANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

Both are John Updike's copies with his ownership signature to the front covers. Both proofs are in fine condition. The Lorrie Moore proof is an especially interesting association in that Updike later included a story from this collection in his anthology Best American Short Stories of the Century.; Uncorrected Proof; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; Archive Pulitzer Prize Winners American Fiction Short Story Poetry Literature Writer Author Lot Publishing Updike . ‎JOHN UPDIKE & DICK CAVETT‎

‎ORIGINAL STUDIO MASTER TAPE - UNCUT - DECEMBER 1978 JOHN UPDIKE INTERVIEWED BY DICK CAVETT‎

‎1978. On offer is the unedited original studio tape of The Dick Cavett Show Dec. 1978. Superb piece of television and literary history. Cavett intelligent and erudite shines in this one-on-one with Updike who is also at his best. The chemistry between the two is everything in this 'intimate' conversation and Updike's answers to Cavett's questions are frequently referenced by students and chroniclers of the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. In the original taping there was a technical glitch undiscovered by the cameraman for several minutes at the very start of the interview but corrected after a few minutes. This is a complete copy unedited and as such has the warts and all of a live taping. Very Good. unknown‎
