The original double leaf from the journal is dated June 1851 on the first three pages and July 1851 on the last page. The leaf records purchases including hats and gloves clay pipes wine brandy and all kinds of comestibles. The accompanying text by Kenneth M. Johnson describes the history of Coloma California where the store was located and the emporium itself which as the title suggests sold everything from champagne to shoes. Color photograph of President Lyndon and First Lady Lady Bird Johnson couple in formal attire signed and inscribed to the deputy director of the FBI "To Deke de Loach-with our appreciation for your steadfastness and devotion to country-Lady Bird Johnson Merry Christmas! 1968" and "and Lyndon B. Johnson." A presidential seal green ribbon calling card and White House envelope are affixed to the reverse. Framed and in fine condition. The recipient Deke DeLoach worked at the FBI for nearly thirty years and in 1965 was promoted by Hoover to Deputy Director. During his post DeLoach was the third most senior official in the FBI after J. Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson and was the lead investigator in both the Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. assassinations. The entire piece measures 11.75 inches by 14.75 inches. Lyndon Baines Johnson was an American politician who served as the 36th President of the United States from 1963 to 1969 assuming the office after serving as the 37th Vice President of the United States under President John F. Kennedy from 1961 to 1963. A Democrat from Texas he previously served as a United States Representative from 1937 to 1949 and then as a United States Senator from 1949 to 1961. He spent six years as Senate Majority Leader two as Senate Minority Leader and two more as Senate Majority Whip. unknown

Woodring's Assistant Secretary of War 1937-40 felt betrayed when President Roosevelt didn't appoint him to the cabinet after Woodring's resignation in 1940 -- but when President Truman's first Secretary of Defense James V. Forrestal resigned in 1948 he became this country's second Secretary of Defense in 1949 only serving until 1950 when he resigned and paved the way for the illustrious George C. Marshall. Printed DS 3pp rectos only 8" X 12�" n.p. 1937. Very good. Lightly edgeworn with faint single horizontal fold at center; stapled at upper left. Marked "FUTURE RELEASE / Please Note Date" in red at top of first page the War Department press release is summarized at top: 'This address of The Honorable Louis Johnson The Assistant Secretary of War to be made at the Armistice Day Ceremonies at the National Memorial Amphitheater Arlington National Cemetery Virginia on November 11 1937." Johnson's speech begins "Another year has passed. Again we have stood in devout silence before the tomb of our Unknown Soldier. Again we have held communion with his immortal soul" and is a touching patriotic address that discusses at some length the U.S.'s military readiness in the face of turmoil in Europe. In a blank portion at upper right of the first page he boldly pens "Louis Johnson / The Assistant Sec of War" in blue ink. Very attractive and highly unusual in this form. unknown

First Lady. Signed initials Postal Cover 6�" X 3�" cancelled in Phoenix Arizona on 28 May 1968. 5-cent "Plant for a More Beautiful America" and 1-cent "Andrew Jackson" stamp at upper right. Near the center just below the postal cancellation Johnson boldly pens a large "LBJ" in black ballpoint. Signed in person by the First Lady at the opening of a new post office in Phoenix -- this and the stamp honoring her passion for conservation programs make this a relevant cover for Johnson. unknown

On "The Assistant Secretary of War" letterhead Johnson transmits to an admirer "a copy of my Armistice Day speech at Arlington." Boldly signed in blue ink. Accompanied by a superb glossy 9" X 7" black and white news agency photograph depicting President Truman seated at a large table with four others and five standing behind. Original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso dated 12 February 1950 titles this scene "President Hears Report from Joint Chiefs" and describes it: "The Joint Chiefs of Staff who returned Friday night from an inspection of the Far East. are shown as they reported to President Truman and defense department heads at the White House yesterday." Johnson is seated next to a smiling Truman. A fine pair. unknown

Lyndon B. Johnson Annotated WWII Photographs.
1942. Two rare original black and white photographs of Lyndon B. Johnson annotated by him on the verso of each. Lyndon has annotated the photograph of him entering the cockpit of a plane "Boarding Navy PBY plane Dutch Harbor Alaska Latter part of July 1942" and the photograph of him examining a world map "Never Used Taken Mc sic Arthur Office Headquarters - Somewhere in Australia June 18 1942." In near fine condition. Johnson was appointed Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve during the spring of 1940; he served on active duty between December 1941-July 1942. In the spring of 1942 President Franklin D. Roosevelt dispatched Johnson as a political adviser to observe and report on military conditions in the Southwest Pacific. On June 9 1942 - a little over a week before the photo of Johnson before the map was taken - Johnson's plane was attacked. General Douglas MacArthur recommended that Johnson be awarded the Silver Star to reward Johnson's "gallantry in action". unknown books
