Maps engraved by the French cartographer Jean Denis Barbié du Bocage 1760-1825 who was a friend of the author Barthélemy. At this time he was attached like Barthélemy to the cabinet of medals from the Library of King. Condition: Bindings scuffed. Corners slightly bumped. Some scattered and insignificant ink and rust spots. Faint traces of a bookplate being removed on the front pastedowns Note: The Frenchman Jean Jacques Barthélemy 1716-1795 was a cleric and keeper of the royal cabinet of medals in Paris. His fame rests on his 'Voyage du jeune Anacharsis' or 'Travels of Anacharsis the younger in Greece in the middle of the 4thy century B.C' which was published in 1788 and illustrated with maps by the cartographer Jean Denis Barbié du Bocage. The 'Voyage' was longtime held in wide esteem as a popular account of the antiquities manners customs and governments of ancient Greece. Barthélemy's aim was not scholarship or to write a history of Greece. His intention was to provide his countrymen in an entertaining form with some knowledge of Greek civilization and to popularize the results of modern research. A road trip when 'tout est en action' is an excellent vehicle for telling 'des détails interdits à l'historien'. Vol. 1 Avertissement p. VI Nevertheless in volume 1 Barthélemy gives a copious introduction which supplies whatever may be wanting in respect to historical details. The first person narrator of the story Anacharsis is a young Scythian a descendent of the famous philosopher Anacharsis of whom he complains that he is 'si célèbre parmi les Grecs et si indignement traité chez les Scythes'. vol. 2 p. 1 Our fictional hero leaves for Athens for instruction in the spring of 363 B.C a few years before the birth of Alexander the Great. An extremely rare well illustrated and important edition. The last earliest copy in the ABPC auction records is the 1534 edition in a very worn state. The 1536 edition realized last $747.00 at Sotheby's Oct 21st 1980 lot 448. Physiognomy is the interpretation of outward appearance especially the features of the face to discover a person's predominant temper and character. Physiognomy has also been used as a kind of divination and is often associated with astrology. o Coclès like others before and after him tried to create a science out of something each of us does from time to time: judge a person by his or her facial characteristics. Physiognomists like Coclès are wont to say things such as "people with snub noses are vain untruthful unstable unfaithful and seducers." The complete set of illustrations is present whereas most copies lack one or several plates. The Spanish original dates from 1609. ""This translation is more complete than the original: the third volume is entirely composed of the history of conquests made by the Dutch in this country"". Chadenat 739p. Armorial copy with arms stamped on the upper covers and cipher on the lower covers. Unidentified. Contemporary full brown speckled sheep binding. Spine with raised bands decorated with central fleuronné lozenges and roulettes on the bands. Brown sheep title label and volume labels. Arms and ciphers stamped on the covers with faded gilding or only traces of gilding. If the arms were gilt the ciphers on the lower covers were stamped in blind. Traces of rubbing. 3 corners slightly bumped. Slight traces of dampstaining in upper margin on the first 3 leaves of volume I and the preliminary leaves recurring sporadically on some leaves. Same on the title of volume 2 and some leaves and plates. Same in volume III on the frontispiece the endleaves and appearing sporadically on some leaves and plates then recurring again etc. Some foxing and browned pages. 3 plates have small paper patches on verso filling tears. Nibbling on the upper cover of volume II and the lower cover of volume III. Good armorial copy. Archipelago of 632 islands in Indonesia these Moluccan islands where spices were found very early attracted the covetousness of Europeans. This is one of the most important works for the history of the Philippine Islands with precious documents on the navigators Drake and Magellan. Francesco Bartolozzi Ra 1727 - 1815 Was An Italian Engraver Whose Most Productive Period Was Spent In London. Bartolozzi Was Born In Florence. He Was Originally Destined To Follow The Profession Of His Father A Gold- And Silver-Smith But He Manifested So Much Skill And Taste In Designing That He Was Placed Under The Supervision Of Two Florentine Artists Including Ignazio Hugford And Giovanni Domenico Ferretti Who Instructed Him In Painting. After Devoting Three Years To That Art He Went To Venice And Studied Engraving. He Particularly Admired The Work Of Joseph Wagner. His First Productions In Venice Were Plates In The Style Of Marco Ricci Zuccarelli And Others While Working For Wagner Which Began To Draw Attention. He Then Moved For A Short Time To Rome Where He Completed A Set Of Engravings Representing Frescoes At Grottaferrata By Domenichino Depicting The Life Of St Nilus. He Soon Returned To Venice And Left For London In 1764. He Lived In London For Nearly Forty Years. He Produced An Enormous Number Of Engravings Including Clytie After Annibale Carracci And Of The Virgin And Child After Carlo Dolci. A Large Proportion Of Them Are From The Works Of Cipriani And Angelica Kauffman. Bartolozzi Also Contributed A Number Of Plates To Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery. He Also Drew Sketches Of His Own In Red Chalk. Soon After Arriving In London He Was Appointed 'Engraver To The King' With An Annual Salary Of £300. He Was Elected A Founding Member Of The Royal Academy In 1768 And In 1802 Became The Founding President Of The Short-Lived Society Of Engravers. His Pupils Were Michele Benedetti Ignatius Joseph Van Den Berghe Thomas Cheesman Lambertus Antonius Claessens Daniel Gardner Christiaan Josi Johan Fredrik Martin Conrad Martin Metz Luigi Schiavonetti John Keyse Sherwin Heinrich Sintzenich Peltro William Tomkins Don Bernardo Zilotti2 And Gabriel Scorodomoff. Bartolozzi Was Not The Inventor Of The So-Called Crayon Manner Of Engraving Which Imitated The Subtleties Of Chalk Drawings But He Made It The Fashion. The Story of My Childhood.

First edition of the founder of the American Red Cross American Civil War nurse Clara Barton's childhood memoirs. 12mo original publisher's full red sheep with gilt titles to the spine and front panel frontispiece portrait of Barton. Presentation copy inscribed by Barton on the half-title page "To Lena Hubbell Chamberlin sic in the truth that maketh free. A simple story simply told but such as it is will one dear Lena accept it with the heart hove of Clara Barton Glen Echo February 8th 1910." The recipient Lena Hubbell Chamberlain was the niece of Dr. Julian Hubbell Barton's long time assistant and the first American Red Cross chief field agent whom Barton relied upon to direct day-to-day relief operations including the distribution of supplies and relief workers. Barton's most loyal companion Hubbell read about Barton's accomplishments during the Civil War and upon meeting her dedicated his services entirely to her cause. When Barton resigned in 1904 he resigned too and continued to assist her until her death in 1912 preserving her home and mementos which are now the Clara Barton National Historic Site. Hubbell's nieces Lena and Rena inherited the house after Hubbell's death and turned it into a boarding house which was in use between 1929 and 1942 National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior. In good condition. An exceptional association. While working as a patent clerk in Washington D.C. Clara Barton took the lead in providing aid to the first wounded men in uniform at the outbreak of the Civil War who had been transported from the grounds of the Baltimore Riot to the Capitol Building. She soon dedicated herself to the cause of collecting medical supplies for the Union soldiers and using her own living quarters as a storeroom began distributing them to the front lines. She worked to distribute stores clean field hospitals apply dressings and serve food to wounded soldiers in close proximity to several battles including Cedar Mountain Second Bull Run Antietam and Fredericksburg helping both Union and Confederate soldiers. After the war Barton established the American branch of the Red Cross which she became president of in 1881. The Baker & Taylor Co. unknown books

The Story of My Childhood.

First edition of the founder of the American Red Cross American Civil War nurse Clara Barton's childhood memoirs. 12mo original publisher's full red sheep with gilt titles to the spine and front panel frontispiece portrait of Barton. Presentation copy inscribed by Barton on the half-title page "To Lena Hubbell Chamberlin sic in the truth that maketh free. A simple story simply told but such as it is will one dear Lena accept it with the heart hove of Clara Barton Glen Echo February 8th 1910." The recipient Lena Hubbell Chamberlain was the niece of Dr. Julian Hubbell Barton's long time assistant and the first American Red Cross chief field agent whom Barton relied upon to direct day-to-day relief operations including the distribution of supplies and relief workers. Barton's most loyal companion Hubbell read about Barton's accomplishments during the Civil War and upon meeting her dedicated his services entirely to her cause. When Barton resigned in 1904 he resigned too and continued to assist her until her death in 1912 preserving her home and mementos which are now the Clara Barton National Historic Site. Hubbell's nieces Lena and Rena inherited the house after Hubbell's death and turned it into a boarding house which was in use between 1929 and 1942 National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior. In good condition. An exceptional association. While working as a patent clerk in Washington D.C. Clara Barton took the lead in providing aid to the first wounded men in uniform at the outbreak of the Civil War who had been transported from the grounds of the Baltimore Riot to the Capitol Building. She soon dedicated herself to the cause of collecting medical supplies for the Union soldiers and using her own living quarters as a storeroom began distributing them to the front lines. She worked to distribute stores clean field hospitals apply dressings and serve food to wounded soldiers in close proximity to several battles including Cedar Mountain Second Bull Run Antietam and Fredericksburg helping both Union and Confederate soldiers. After the war Barton established the American branch of the Red Cross which she became president of in 1881. The Baker & Taylor Co. unknown

Scattered foxing. A thin paper strip under the title. Lacking the endpaper before the title. Leaf 637 backed on verso with old paper the following leaf being numbered 640 instead of 639 without lack. Latin translation of the complete works of Basil of Caesarea bishop of the eponymous city in Cappadocia considered one of the first doctors of the church and venerated as a saint by both Orthodox and Catholics; his works contain important reflections on the Holy Trinity the establishment of the first monastic rule Rule of Saint Basil which would give rise to that of Saint Benedict; he also fought extensively against heresies and church divisions desiring above all unity. His theological work is very rich particularly his correspondence. Jean Gillot 16th-century philologist had specialized in the works of the doctors of the church notably Saint Ambrose and Saint Hilary often in collaboration with Sébastien Nivelle. Margins of 8 leaves have been repaired skillfully. Two small not irritating wormholes in the preliminary leaves. The last page is skillfully mounted. The 2 leaves with the 'epistola nuncupatoria' by J. Argyropulus have erroneously been bound between leaf II & III Note: Basilius Magnus bishop of Caesarea also known as Saint Basil the Great 329/30-379 AD certainly was one of the most brilliant ecclesiastical orators of antiquity combining 'rhetorical skill with simplicity of thought and clarity of expression'. J. Quasten 'Patrology' vol. 3 Utrecht 1963 p. 216 The editio princeps of the Greek text of his 'Opera' was published in Basel in 1532. A Latin translation of only a part of Basil's works made by the Italian humanist and theologian Raphael Volaterranus Raffaello Maffei had been published earlier in Rome in 1515. Our book on offer is a second augmented edition of Basil's works in Latin. They were edited by the French humanist scholar Jacobus Faber Stapulensis Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples ca. 1455-1536 who is best known for his important translation of the New Testament into French. In the short preface the Parisian printer Badius Ascensius explains that Faber Stapulensis had sent him for publication Latin translations of other not yet published texts of Basil 'Basilii vere Magni monumenta aeterna cedro dignissima'. Leaf A1 verso The collection opens with the 'Hexaemeron' i.e nine homilies on the six days of Creation in the opening chapters of the first book of the Bible book Genesis. Leaves 1/26 'There is no work in late Greek literature which could be compared with these homilies in rhetorical beauty'. Quasten p. 216/17 They were translated by Johannes Argyropilus or Argyropoulos a Greek scholar who had fled to Italy after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Next come the first 5 books of 'Adversus Eunomium' the oldest of Basil's dogmatics writings in which he refutes theses of the heretic Arians maintaining a difference in essences between the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit. Eunomius was the leader of a sect that adhered to an extreme form of Arianism. They believed that Jesus Christ was not of the same nature as God the Father. Leaves 27/55 These texts were translated by the Byzantine émigré scholar Georgius Trapezontius. The leaves 55 verso/159 contain a reissue of the Latin translation of 1515 made by Raphael Volaterranus opening with the 'Monodia Gregorii Nazianzeni in Magnum Basilium'. They also include about 18 homilies on the Psalms. The last part leaves 159/178 contains Basil's 'Regula' in the Latin translation of the Gaulish monk Rufinus Aquileiensis 344-411.
