He was born in Michelstadt-im-Odenwald then in the Grand Duchy of Hesse of the German Empire. In his early years he studied under Rudolf Koch at Offenbach School of Art and Design and developed skills in woodcuts. Koch and Kredel collaborated on A Book of Signs 1923 and The Book of Flowers 1930. Following Koch's death in 1934 Kredel moved to Frankfurt but in 1938 he fled Germany for political reasons with help from Melbert Cary. After emigrating to the United States that year he taught at Cooper Union in New York and continued to work as an artist. He produced illustrations for over 400 books in German and English and received many awards and honors. Many of his originals are now housed at the Art Library at Yale University.2Kredel illustrated Eleanor Roosevelt's children's book Christmas Alfred A. Knopf 1940 and was commissioned to create a woodcut of the Presidential Seal for the inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1961. He illustrated several volumes for George Macy's Limited Edition Club cf. Heritage Press and the original World's Best Fairy Tales for Reader's Digest Association 1967. The Limited Edition Club titles include The Complete Andersen: All of the Stories of Hans Christian Andersen in Six Volumes a limited edition of 1500 sets for the Limited Editions Club completed as a set 1949 LCCN 49-3049. It was probably compiled and edited by Daniel Heinsius professor of Greek at the University of Leiden from 1609. Aesop is introduced with a poem in Greek called 'De Aesopi Fabulis et ejus sapientia' by Daniel Heinsius. The 'Batrachomyomachia' is introduced by a 5 page 'argumentum Batrachomyomachiae' also by Heinsius. It concludes with a Greek poem by Heinsius 'In Batrachomyomachiam'. The first edition of this schoolbook was published in 1626 reissued several times in Leiden in 1632 in Amsterdam in 1649 1653 1660 1672 and 1726 and in Utrecht in 1669 1685 1699 and for the last time in 1727 in Utrecht and in Amsterdam. � The collection was commissioned by the Provincal Governments of Holland and West-Frisia for the use in local 'Latin schools' in the Western part of the Dutch Republic. In 1625 they decreed that the same set of rules should apply to all public schools in their provinces. The schools should have the same order of classes and lessons the same schedule school books authors mostly Roman and exercises. The percentage of lessons dedicated to Greek was at the beginning around 13 %. The only Greek editions apart from Aesopus were of Homer 3 books 1626 1635 & 1642 and Aphthonius 1626 E.J.
