Adburgham Alison introduction
Gamage's Christmas Bazaar 1913 being a facsimile reprint of the 1913 Christmas catalogue of A.W. Gamage Ltd of Holborn London with some pages from the 1911 General Catalogue
Newton Abbot: David & Charles 1974. Very well illustrated quarto pp 36 472 top edge foxed and fore-edge slightly foxed otherwise a very good copy in a slightly faded dustwrapper. Gamages began life in 1878 in a rented watch repair shop and after quickly becoming a success amongst its customers was established as a London institution. In time it was to grow large enough to take up most of the block on which it was situated. The store finally closed in 1972 but prior to that had been unusual in that its premises were away from the main Oxford Street shopping area being on the edge of the City of London at Holborn Circus. Gamages also ran a successful mail-order business. Many of those who were children at the time remember Gamages because of its unparallelled stock of toys of the day and the Gamages catalogue which was a well-loved gift during the autumn in time for Christmas present requests to be made. One of the store's main attractions was a large model railway which alternated between a day and night scene by the use of lighting. The railway was provided by a man called Bertram Otto who was German by birth. It received many thousands of visitors every Christmas. Gamages had many departments much more than modern department stores. There was a substantial hardware department on the ground floor which included specialist motor parts and car seat cover sections. There was a photographic department camping pets toys and sporting departments the latter selling shotguns. The toy department was extensive and there were substantial fashion furniture and carpeting departments and in latter years a small food supermarket. Cloth. Very Good/Very Slightly faded. David & Charles Hardcover

Addison Joseph; Richard Steele; Henry Morley Intro
The Spectator Three Volumes Complete: A New Edition Reproducing the Original Text Both as First Issued and as Corrected by its Authors
London: George Routledge & Sons. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1891. New Revised Edition. First Printing. Leather. Bound in half brown morocco over marbled boards by John Bumpus of Oxford Street; spines in six compartments separated by raised bands gilt lettering in two compartments gilt borders in remainder gilt borders on covers t.e.g. marbled endpapers. These three volumes include all 632 issues of The Spectator. They also include Translations of the Mottos Some Advertisements from the Original Issues of The Spectator and a detailed Index. The Spectator was a daily publication founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele in England lasting from 1711 to 1712. Each "paper" or "number" was approximately 2500 words long and the original run consisted of 555 numbers beginning on 1 March 1711. The publication was revived briefly in 1714. Through characters it developed The Spectator commented on the habits foibles and social faux pas of all classes of Englishmen. The Spectator was designed "to enliven morality with wit and to temper wit with morality". Addison and Steele hoped that it would be said they have "brought philosophy out of closets and libraries schools and colleges to dwell in clubs and assemblies at tea-tables and coffee-houses". They recommend that readers of the paper consider it "as a part of the tea-equipage" and set aside time to read it each morning. Despite a modest daily circulation of approximately 3000 copies The Spectator was widely read; Joseph Addison estimated that each number was read by 60000 Londoners about a tenth of the capital's population at the time. Most readers were not themselves subscribers but patrons of one of the subscribing coffeehouses. "The Spectator" also had many readers in the American colonies James Madison in particular. The Spectator is seen as instrumental in the formation of the public sphere in 18th century England. Joseph Addison 1672-1719 was an English essayist poet playwright and politician. He was the eldest son of The Reverend Lancelot Addison. His name is usually remembered alongside that of his long-standing friend Richard Steele with whom he founded The Spectator magazine. Sir Richard Steele 1672-1729 was an Irish writer and politician remembered as co-founder with his friend Joseph Addison of the magazine The Spectator. Steele became a Whig Member of Parliament in 1713 for Stockbridge.3 He was soon expelled for issuing a pamphlet in favor of the Hanoverian succession. When George I of Great Britain came to the throne in the following year Steele was knighted and given responsibility for the Theatre Royal Drury Lane London. He returned to parliament in 1715 for Boroughbridge. All three volumes are in excellent condition unmarked tight square and clean. An extremely handsome set.
