Bougeant famous Jesuit scholar is the architect of this compilation which borrows articles from periodicals such as the Journal des savans La Republique des lettres and other lesser-known publications. The result is a most representative panorama of scientific knowledge. Physics is naturally understood in the broad sense so one will find beyond general physics acoustics optics. chapters on chemistry anatomy plants and natural science astronomy. Father Bougeant's selection proves audacious and fascinating the articles are quite short and maintain curiosity moving from strange and extraordinary subjects to more classical ones such as the causes of thunderstorms. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The ‘Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants.This edition the so-called “Imperial” edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened “Moyen-Egypte” and “Grand-Egypte”. L'arretin consists of 25 essays and tales on subjects as diverse as Les nègres L'agriculture La chasteté ou le célibat Histoire de maître Pierre etc. These are all violent critiques sometimes direct sometimes satirical or allegorical of Biblical teaching the church and its history. Abbé Du Laurens 1719-1793 was a polemical and anti-religious writer whose works are all libertine and licentious but above all profoundly anti-religious. The author did not hesitate to descend to the lowest trivialities to support his critique but his comic inventions often astonishing earned him praise. Pursued for his books he took refuge in Holland then was imprisoned in Mainz in 1767 to end his days at 74 in a convent. 'This book is a lively and rather ribald critique of the principal stories of the Bible. L'epouse de Suze is a critique of La nouvelle Heloïse. Le sage Pangloss is Solomon the wisest of men it is an original chapter even through its singular biblical citations. L'histoire de Suzon is that of Susanna and the two elders l'histoire de Godemiché. The origin of these instruments of chamois or velvet that became so common in convents. Finally les Couvens de Jésuites is an allegory of the history of Sodom. In a word the entire volume is rather a facetious critique of the Bible and clerical institutions than a simply ribald book'. Neri's work served as the basis and foundation for all books that followed on the same subject. One will note among the various notes and treatises that of Henckel on how to use plants in the manufacture of glassware and the anonymous one on the secrets of true porcelain. Proof on watermarked laid paper work from the late 16th or early 17th century. Artist's signature in the plate. Latin caption in the lower part of the engraving. Old manuscript translation below the plate mark: ""Ainsi se chassent les loutres dans des barques en châne creux. Elles sont frappées dans l'eau avec un trident crochu"" ""Thus otters are hunted in boats made of hollow oak. They are struck in the water with a hooked trident"". Watermark visible by transparency. The engraving has been mounted and restored with small pieces of old laid paper glued to the edges on the reverse otherwise fine condition for this very rare engraving. Johannes Stradanus known as Giovanni Stradano or Jan van der Straet was a Flemish painter and engraver born in Bruges in 1523 and died in Florence on February 11 1605. After beginning to learn painting from his father and following the latter's death he continued his training in the workshop of Maximiliaan Frank from 1535 to 1537 then in that of Pieter Aertsen in Antwerp from 1537 to 1540. In 1545 he was received as a master in the Antwerp painters' guild. He then began a journey across Europe: in France then in Italy where he first stayed in Venice before settling in Florence. There he worked for Cosimo I de' Medici and collaborated with Giorgio Vasari for the decoration of the Studiolo of Francesco I de' Medici and for that of the hall of Clement VII in the Palazzo Vecchio. In 1565 he was part of the teams of painters and sculptors charged under the direction of Giorgio Vasari with creating the gigantic decoration planned for the entry into Florence of Joanna of Austria on the occasion of her marriage to Francesco I de' Medici. Greatly influenced by the Mannerists including Michelangelo Johannes Stradanus contributed to the development of the great Italian history painting. He painted several altarpieces for Florentine churches. He also stayed in Rome from 1550 to 1553 and in Naples in 1576. After a stay in Antwerp in 1578 he devoted a large part of his activity to engraving. S. n. unknown‎
