Five mimeographed stapled booklets 26 x 18 cm 26 8 50 16 24 pp including wrappers on folded sheets 3 folding charts text diagrams and tables paper browning some soiling and discolouration and occasional ink marking in the text lower wrapper one booklet detached but in still in sound condition. A set of unpublished mimeographed Japanese military documents containing detailed information about various parts of the Tapanuli Regency of Sumatra under Japanese occupation. The four separate volumes cover Tapanuli Regency in general the town of Tarutun Fort de Kock Bukittingi and the wider central west coast region of Sumatra. The volume on Tapanuli is dated August 1942 and the volume of Tarutun October 1942 suggesting that these were compiled a few months after the Japanese invasion of Sumatra. They contain basic information on climate population history customs transport and education. The volume on Tarutun includes a detailed fold-out map of the town and there are also detailed statistical tables on climate agriculture education etc. A rare and important source for researching the wartime history of Indonesia. . Fussell observes that Home made a very real contribution to agricultural sciences; and Sir John Russell comments -"The book is a great advance on anything that had gone before it not only because it recognizes that plant nutrition depends on several factors but because it indicates so clearly the two methods to be followed in studying the problem - pot cultures and plant analysis". Generally quite clean and firm internally though with slight age-toning. Octavo illustrated with 24 plain stipple-engraved plates pp xxxvi 751 ivi untrimmed age-toned and with foxing heavy on some pages and plates but almost or entirely lacking on the larger parts of the volumes one page more heavily browned from the insertion of a paper at some point with the blindstamp of the Carnegie Institution on the title pages and also the tiny stamp of the Haverford College Library; the 'sold' label of Haverford is loosely inserted. Recently bound in grey boards new endpapers the paper spine labels reading "The Plants of North America". SCARCE. "The first publication on plants from all of North America above Mexico and the first to publish plants from the Pacific Coast Pursh's Flora includes more than 3000 species and 470 genera including the first descriptions of more than 100 species collected by the Lewis and Clark expedition" ANB. Sabin 66728. Pursh a German botanist came to America in 1799 as a traveler collector gardener and landscape artist. From 1803 until about 1805 he was in charge of William Hamilton's estate near Philadelphia before becoming employed in the botanizing expeditions of Benjamin Smith Barton. From 1809 to 1810 he headed Hosack's Elgin Botanic Garden in New York. In 1811 Pursh traveled to England where he produced his Flora under the patronage of A. B. Lambert to whom the work is dedicated. Pursh relied upon the Lewis and Clark specimens entrusted to M'Mahon for many of his descriptions of the Pacific coast plants; he also consulted some forty-one other botanical collections for his research. Apperently William Hooker the artist of Salisbury's Paradisus Londinensis was responsible for a good portion of both the drawings and engravings. Printing of the Flora Americae Septentrionalis was completed in late 1813 as the Linnaean Society possesses a presentation copy dated 21 December 1813. . An uncommon early edition. Dr John Murray FRSE FGS 1778–1820 was a short-lived 19th century British physician and prominent scientist working in the fields of physics chemistry and geology and described by Brydges as a "Chemical Philiospher". His first important published work "Elements of Chemistry" appeared when he was only 23. He was born in Edinburgh in 1778 and educated at the High School. He studied Medicine at St Andrews University graduating around 1798. He appears in Edinburgh again in 1810 as a lecturer in Chemistry. He later also lectured in Materia Medica Pharmacy and Natural Philosophy Physics. In 1812 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for his contributions to Geology his proposers being Thomas Charles Hope Robert Jameson and Sir George Steuart Mackenzie. He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1815 and was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of London. He presented 28 papers to the Royal Society the most important relating to proposals for a safety lamp for miners. He received his doctorate MD in 1814. Second edition. Full Leather. Good. Illustrated with 12 engraved plates several of them folding octavo pp xxiv 579 i slight age-toning to the front endpaper the half-title and the frontispiece otherwise very clean internally neatly bound in a recent brown half-leather and cloth. With the bookplate of Robert Washington Oates on the front endpaper. Sir William Lawrence 1st Baronet FRCS FRS 1783 -1867 was an English surgeon who became President of the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Serjeant Surgeon to the Queen. In his mid-thirties he published two books of his lectures which contained pre-Darwinian ideas on man's nature and effectively on evolution. In 1819 the second book known by its short title of the Natural history of Man caused a storm of disapproval from conservative and clerical quarters for its supposed atheism and within the medical profession because he advocated a materialist rather than vitalist approach to human life. He was linked by his critics with such other 'revolutionaries' as Thomas Paine and Lord Byron. It was "the first great scientific issue that widely seized the public imagination in Britain a premonition of the debate over Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection exactly forty years later". It contained some remarkable anticipations of later thought but was ruthlessly suppressed. To this day many historical accounts of evolutionary ideas do not mention Lawrence's contribution. He is omitted for example from many of the Darwin biographies from some evolution textbooks essay collections and even from accounts of pre-Darwinian science and religion. Although the only idea of interest which Darwin found in Lawrence was that of sexual selection in man the influence on Alfred Russel Wallace was more positive. The second issue of the first volume RARE. Tenore was an Italian botanist with extensive publications. He helped establish the Botanical Garden of Naples and became its director in 1810. He also served as president of the Accademia nazionale delle scienze and served as president of the Accademia Pontaniana six times from the 1830s through the 1850s. Illustrated with 64 slightly tinted plates octavo pp xvi 175 a couple of tiny ink spots on the fore-edge the title page slightly foxed otherwise very clean internaly the endpapers age-toned the front endpaper starting to crack but with absolutely no weakness probably contemporary brown patterned cloth very slightly worn the spine faded. The preface points out that one of the conditions to publication was that the plates should be nature-printed. This made it necessary to first publish a folio edition with a slightly different title which was indeed nature-printed. This was produced in a very small number. This octavo edition was then prepared for general distribution with the plates prepared by photo-lithography and depict the grasses one-half their natural size. Inscribed on the title page - "F.W. Andrews from Sir James Hector" - the latter was Director of the Colonial Museum and prepared the preface to the work. At the current time we also have a copy of the rare folio edition for sale. Small folio engraved vignette title page pinted in red and black extra engraved title page dated 1677 pp 4 659.i26 very age-toned and browned the pages tender firmly bound in contemporary quarter vellum and paper-covered boards a little worn and aged. The first fifty or so pages have a light brown stain on the outer and lower sides of the pages the engraved title page is probably mounted the printed title page has an early repair and now a horizontal 55mm tear without loss the final leaf of the index has an old repair with sl;ight loss of text. The Hartland Library copy with labels and manuscript notes attached to the front endpapers. RARE.The Hunt Library copy dated 1677 appears not to have the engraved title page and even suggests that it is not normally present. Interestingly documents attached to the front endpaper show that this copy originally appeared for sale at the Payne Sale Sotheby's Jamuary 1912 when it was bought by Bernard Quaritch; from whom it was promptly returned presumably because the repairs had not been mentioned in the description. It was equally promptly re-offered in the May sale at which point it was purchased by Hartland for 12 shillings. The Library was formed by Edwin Sydney Hartland and was a diverse but major collection of herbals archaeology and anthropology. It was donated to Gloucestershire County Council in 1936 and was eventually dispersed around 2010. Dominique Chabrey - 1610-1669 - was a Swiss physician and therefore also a botanist as the two disciplines were closely linked in the era of the herbal. It was Chabrey who saw Bauhin's grand work Historia plantarum universalis in 3 volumes 1650-1651 edited and published many years after Bauhin's death. Chabrey's own Stirpium icones et sciagraphia originally published in 1666 can be regarded as an abridgment of the Bauhin & Cherler work. Like its precursor volumes the new book contained discussions of numerous European plants with each described and illustrated with a woodcut. Significantly plant names here were given in four languages: Flemish French German and Latin. Small quarto pp x - including an engraved bordered dedication page 385 lacking pages 197-208 rather age-toned a water stain throughout which is heavier and covering more of the early pages gradually fading after the first third of the book until almost imperceptible latterly a small hole in the title page leading to loss of one letter; with many attractive small square woodcuts throughout rebound in a twentieth century simple full calf by Theo Merrett the original front endpaper laid down and with the original spine laid down also. The Hartland Library copy with labels and manuscript notes attached to the front endpapers. RARE. The Library was formed by Edwin Sydney Hartland and was a diverse but major collection of herbals archaeology and anthropology. It was donated to Gloucestershire County Council in 1936 and was eventually dispersed around 2010. Crescenzi was born of a good family in Bologna Italy. He studied logic natural history medicine and law in the University of Bologna and became a lawyer and writer. Tired of law practice he decided to write about agricultural matters. His book entitled Ruralia Commoda contained much information relative to domestic plants and animals. The books is considered to be the best medieval treatise on agriculture about 1306. It was very popular in continental Europe was translated into several European languages and it exists in a large number of manuscripts. It was likewise printed many times. The book was composed with the purpose of providing the intelligent farmer with a practical account of all aspects of farming. It included material concerning plant growth extracted from the work of Albertus Magnus as well as the arrangement of farm buildings and water supply. Among the subjects treated were: Cultivation of cereals peas and beans. Cultivation of grapes and making of wines. Cultivation of fruit trees vegetables medicinal plants and flowers. Care of woods. His most original writing involved an elaborate presentation of grafting of grapes trees and the insect larvae destroying plants. he quoted Palladius Columella as well as other ancient authorities. Flore française is a book by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Augustin Pyramus de Candolle that was published in 1815 in Paris. It is a work on botany classification and the plants of France. Lamarck designed the book to help identify plants using dichotomous keys which are classification tools that help users choose between opposing pairs of morphological characters. Lamarck was a botanist who became a prominent figure in French science after studying with de Jussieu and the publishing this work. He was mentored by Georges-Louis Leclerc Comte de Buffon a leading French scientist at the time. Lamarck's work was well-respected by scholars and helped him gain membership to the French Academy of Sciences in 1779.
