‎Manual of the Indigenous Grasses of New Zealand‎

‎Wellington: The Office of James Hughes Colonial Museum & Geological Survey Department 1880. Illustrated with 64 slightly tinted plates four or five are a little foxed octavo pp xvi 175 the title page slightly foxed otherwise very clean internaly recently bound in a maroon cloth. The preface points out that one of the conditions to publication was that the plates should be nature-printed. This made it necessary to first publish a folio edition with a slightly different title which was indeed nature-printed. This was produced in a very small number. This octavo edition was then prepared for general distribution with the plates prepared by photo-lithography and depict the grasses one-half their natural size. Whilst most of the plates are good a couple are suffering from light foxing but a few others have suffered at the hands of a careless original colourist with the odd small splashmar and in one case a smeared image. Contemporary full calf rubbed and worn with the rear cover rather scuffed. From the library of Alan Roger of Dundonnell House in the Highlands; Roger had a notable garden there with many caged birds. Roger Henry Pocklington Senhouse 1899 - 1970 was an English publisher and translator and a peripheral member of the Bloomsbury Group of writers intellectuals and artists. He had a sado-masochistic sexual relationship with Bloomsbury Group member Lytton Strachey. Despite the dat of Elizabeth's signature she seems not to have been the first owner - the initials on the first blank appear to be "J.R.B. Sept 1824" and there is another pencil signature Samuel J. Second edition quarto with the printed title extra engraved frontispiece the explanation of the frontispiece pp 26 307 i; title page to Dictionarium Rusticum pagination continues to 324 index 4 pages some age-toning and marking throughout but still a very good sound copy; the Explanation of the frontispiece is a little trimmed at the base but no loss of the print the engraved frontispiece has been very carefully restored along its margins the printed title and the index leaves are a little frayed at the margins; the verso of the title to Dictionarium has the contemporary inscription " Wm Chambers His Book bought it of Jonas Broughton of Wellingborough"; in an excellent twentieth century binding of full calf blind stamoed and lined raised bands and a red morocco label on the spine. The binding and paper restoration are by John Smart of Chippenham. Worlidge 1640-1700 was a noted English agriculturalist who lived in Petersfield Hampshire England. He was considered a great expert on rural affairs and one of the first British agriculturalists to discuss the importance of farming as an industry. The book treats of improvements in general of enclosing meadows and pastures and of watering and draining them of clovers vetches spurry Wiltshire long-grass probably that of the meadows of Salisbury hemp flax rape turnips etc. A Persian wheel was made by his direction in Wiltshire in 1665 that carried water in good quantity above twenty feet high for watering meadows and another near Godalming in Surrey. Sowing clover and other seeds preserved the cattle in the fatal winter of 1673 in the southern parts of England; whereas in the western and northern through defect of hay and pasture the greater part of their cattle perished. Hops enough were not planted but we imported them from the Netherlands of a quality not so good as our own. The authors he chiefly quotes are Weston Hartlib and Blith. Worlidge's system of husbandry collected information published during the period of the Commonwealth. The work went through a number of editions and was important for many years. . Second edition. Title page dedication leaf pp 506 ii with seven engraved folding plates and one folding table slight damage to the margin of the ornithological plate a little age-toning generally endpapers unevenly browned but otherwise very clean internally bound in full contemporary polished calf slight wear at the corners joints cracking slightly lacking a small piece at the head of the spine. The students whose names appear on the dissertations were not necessarily their authors; it was their function to present the dissertation and defend it in public debate but the responsibility for the content of the dissertation was largely that of the professor in this case Linnaeus. The fact that Linnaeus cited the Amoenitates as the place of publication for plant names he credited to himself indicates that he was generally the principal author of the work. At the end of this volume is a list of "Editiones operum auctoris" including the Amoenitates with the clear implication that Linnaeus is the author. Of great importance for "Potus Theae" in which Pehr Tillaeus discussed among other things the properties and benefits of tea as a medicine. Tillaeus's dissertation was the first in-depth botanical study of the tea bush and he also named parts of the plant. The tea plant had only been introduced to Sweden and Europe generally as recently as 1763. Also includes Hoffman's "Potus Chocolatae" - a botanico-medical essay on the merits of drinking chocolate flavored with vanilla. Botanical accounts are given of the cacao tree Theobroma cacao L. and of the vanilla orchid Epidendrum vanilla L. = Vanilla fragrans. The preparation of the chocolate beans and of the beverage by the Spaniards is described. Linnaeus advocated use of the beverage as a pleasant drink and for treatment of hypochrondria and hemorrhoids. Other essays include : Gahn's "Fundamenta Agrostographiae" - a classified list of grasses of economic importance preceded by a history of prior studies of grasses. Laurin's "Menthae usus" - an essay on the kinds of mints useful in medicinal preparations. Lado's "Motus polychrestus" - an essay on the importance of physical exercise as a preservative and restorative of good health. Tengborg's "Hortus Culinaris" - an essay on edible and economic plants of Sweden their culture and hardiness. Includes those then in use and others suggested. Backmann's "Fundamenta ornithologica" - an exposition of the fundamentals of Linnaeus' classification of birds. Uddman's "Lepra" - An overview of leprosy including hypotheses about causes types of leprosy possible treatments. Aphonin's "Usus historiae naturalis" - An essay on the importance of a knowledge of natural history to greater improvement of agriculture and horticulture with emphasis on those kinds of plants best suited as food for each kind of domestic animal. Osterdam's "Siren lacertina" - an account of the two-legged Siren lizard of South Carolina sometimes known as the Carolina mud iguana. Berlin's "Usus Muscorum" - an historical study of the economic uses of lichens in Sweden including Lapland. Roos' "Mundus Invisibilis" - a medico-botanical treatise on airborne spores and microorganisms some of which Linnaeus believed to be responsible for infectious diseases. Blad's "Fundamenta entomologiae" - an historical review of entomology with a list of 32 pre-Linnaean authors instructions on how to collect and preserve insects and the fundamentals of their classification. Wedenberg's "Varietas ciborum" - a medico-nutritional essay on the wide range of foodstuffs eaten by man and a classification of these foods into 10 groups and the effects of diets in which each group dominates and the diseases which might result. Octavo pp xx 51 a little age-toning and discolouration the title page more marked and with a small old paper repair to the upper corner a near contemporary signature - "R. Prime" - to the title page otherwise very sound internally. in a later twentieth century simple quarter calf binding a little marked and faded the boards slightly bowed. Of great interest is the seedsman's advertisement bound in at the front - Observations on the Culture of the Mangel Wurzel by Jenkins and Gwyther Nursery and Seedsmen New Road and in the Regent's Park. Ths extends to two and a half small sides folded and marked with the remains of an address and a postmark on the final side. Lettsom's work is rare anyway and I can find no trace of another copy of the Jenkins and Gwyther advertisement. Abbe de Commerell had a great interest in husbandry and made a special study of vegetable and fodder crops. Seed of the mangel wurzel fell in to Lettsom's hands and after sowing it at his botanic garden at Grove Hill he found that it produced an excellent crop for both humans and cattle. He immediately commissioned a translation which went in to three editions within a month. His efforts fell on stony ground and he was somewhat derided for his enthusiasm. Shortly in to the next century however it was greatly taken up by farmers. It was at this time that Jenkins and Gwyther issued their little pamphlet. Their nursery at Regent's Park subsequently became the gardens of the Royal Botanic Society. The owner of this copy was Richard Prime of Walberton House near Arundel. Prime a strong Tory was M.P. for the western division of Sussex 1847-54 and the dominant figure in Walberton in his day. Blanche Henrey 556. Second edition. Quarter leather. Good. Second edition. Illustrated with one folding plate a plan of a forcing frame small octavo pp xxxvi 428 errata leaf edges untrimmed original boards rubbed and a little worn recently re-backed with paper spine and label. There is offsetting from the plate to the opposite page of text and some foxing to the plate and occasionally throughout the book but this is not heavy. The section on vine cultivation has seven pages on which some instructions have been underlined in ink but this has been done so neatly that it almost looks as though it it part of the printing. Bound in at the front is a 12 page bookseller's catalogue. This is an uncut and unpressed copy and as close to its original state is is likely to be found. A great copy. Loudon referred to MacPhail as "an excellent grower of pines and melons" but it is perhaps for his culture of cucumbers that he is best remembered. His brick forcing frame illustrated in this work was described by Rogers 1839 as " an excellent invention that has certainly rendered the forcing of this vegetable more simple.there are few gentleman's gardens and few principal market gardens without them". Fairly heavy browning and foxing on some pages throughout contemporary panelled calf rubbed and scuffed corners worn rebacked at some time with a new calf spine raised bands en extract from a bookseller's catalogue for this copy attached with sellotape to the rear endpaper. The front endpaper contains the armorial bookplate of Sir Edward William Watkin 1819-1901 Member of Parliament and railway entrepreneur; also with the signature of W. Fletcher Grappenhall Cheshire. John Ray was the compiler of these important travels. It is the first English translation of the Rauwolf who was a German physician botanist and traveller. His main notability arises from a trip he made through the Levant and Mesopotamia in 1573-75. The motive of the trip was to search for herbal medicine supplies. Shortly after he returned he published a set of new botanical descriptions with an herbarium. Later he published a general travel narrative about his visit. In addition to botanical investigations Rauwolff observed and recorded his impressions of the people customs and sights of the Levantine region; he was one of the first Europeans to describe the drinking of coffee. Illustrated with a folding plan in the first volume 12mo measures 180mm x 108mm the first volume is partly unpaginated the second volume is 4 211 i slight age-toning and the occasional blemish the frontispiece is awkwardly folded and along with the title page a bit browned but otherwise clean and sound internally half calf and boards rubbed lacking most of the spine labels with the tiny armorial bookplate of William Booth Grey - the son of George Harry Grey 1737 MP for Staffordshire in 1761 and succeeded as the 5th Earl of Stamford 30 May 1768. He is considered to be the artist of two plant collages in the style of Mary Delany acquired by the British Museum in 2008. RARE. William Salisbury botanical nurseryman has been erroneously described as a brother of Richard Anthony Salisbury. In the preface he states that from 1791 he was employed by the Board of Agriculture in conducting experiments on the growth of plants ; he may have been previously engaged as a nurseryman. In 1797 he was gardener to J. Symmons F.R.S. at Paddington House Paddington and in the same year entered into partnership with William Curtis at his garden at Queen's Elm Brompton. After Curtis's death in 1799 he removed the garden to Cadogan Place Sloane Street where he held botanical classes. He died in 1823. The site is now the private gardens of Cadogan Place. Thick 12mo measures 95mm x 149mm binding size pp 30 433i corrigenda pagei second title page 32 271 some age-toning the first title page a little soiled and with slight tears a tiny contemporary signature on the title page possibly Jas Brown very smartly bound in an unlettered modern full calf lightly blind-stamped new endpapers. The binding is a little tight so the inner margins are slightly awkward to read. Hierocles of Alexandria was a Greek Neoplatonist writer who was active around AD 430. The only complete work of his which has been preserved is this commentary on the Golden Verses of Pythagoras. It enjoyed a great reputation in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and there are numerous translations in various European languages. Several other writings especially one on providence and fate a consolatory treatise dedicated to his patron Olympiodorus of Thebes are quoted or referred to by Photius and Stobaeus. Hierocles argued against astrological fatalism on the basis that it is supported by an irrational necessity rather than a divine rational Providence of God.
