All volumes with slight but not objectionable binding leans rubbed corners showing at least some exposure several corners layered mild rubbing to spine extremities and a bit of surface rubbing to cover cloth. Several hinges starting all bindings firm. Collated and complete with all plates present and intact and properly placed final two locations not specified on list of illustrations occur at pp. 212 and 308 of Vol. III several displaying slight to moderate foxing with tissue guards in Vol. I only. Vol. I front pastedown shows original binder's tag of Runting & Jeffcoat East Harding Street mounted at bottom binding corner. Originally catalogued as lot #3 in the 1941 three-volume catalog of Newton's library auctioned by Parke-Bernet where described as "a few plates slightly foxed. . . . original cloth uncut; covers slightly stained somewhat worn a few pages lightly foxed." Binders' directions provided on p. xv. Eight 8 leaves in Ch. 1 show closed tears extending from fore-edge through margins and into the text in several cases across the leaf to the binding gutter but no loss all professsionally mended with clear archival tape and barely noticeable. No other internal defects excepting mild wear to some corners slight and scattered soiling. Large foldout map of Asia as conquered by Genghis Khan etc. in the 13th-15th centuries "Great Tartary" is detached and laid in; 995 intact with some very slight loss along edges and one fold separated and reattached along one of the two vertical folds with archival tape repairs to blank verso along other folds and some closed tears/chipping along edges; several of the recent archival tape repairs are laid over earlier non-archival tape removing which seemed likely to harm the map; there is one approx. 1" section of archival tape mounted on the front of the map along a fold with all other repairs made on verso only. Book presents "as new" by virtue of rebinding contents VG map VG. Overall a conservatively restored copy that will remain durable for decades of an exceptionally scarce issue. Utterly obscure mock-heroic poem patterned on Longfellow's "Hiawatha" autobiographical account with the actual facts provided in an explanatory narrative serving as this volume's Foreword of the author's marriage to Ann Cecilia Keller daughter of Rev. Benjamin Keller Lutheran Pastor at Gettysburg employment as a road surveyor and engineer establishment of a household on a hill overlooking Gettysburg proximate to Roundtop and other events associated with the Susquehanna Valley and Adams County in and around Gettysburg York as well as Philadelphia other surnames mentioned including Schmucker and Miller. Flyleaves not original to issue have been inserted with cloth mending tape. This copy lacks title page i/ii but is otherwise complete and has been identified by its pagination and size as the 1774 Burlington imprint. Burgundy half-leather bordered in gilt gilt lettering and bands on spine panel marbled paper over boards. xii159 pp. Moderately rubbed along joints and corners with exposure at latter as well as along portions of edges. Some surface rubbing as well but no loss. Lacks frontis. engraving of Nancy Linton. Signed by former owner on front pastedown and at top of title page both signatures dated 1825. Dedication page neatly clipped lacking approx. 25% evidently to remove another signature; interior otherwise complete. Foxing throughout generally light occasionally ranging toward moderate. Annotations on rear endpapers. Firm binding decently preserved. Exceptionally scarce. Appears to be the first edition of this title which had several later printings. William Swaim having been cured of a disease possibly venereal by a physician's remedy about 1822 ferreted out the ingredients added to them oil of wintergreen for flavor and extensively advertised his "panacea" especially through pamphlets decorated with a symbolic Hercules killing the hydra. Despite exposes published by medical societies of New York and Philadelphia he continued manufacturing his nostrum waxing immensely rich by the mid-century. Even in the 1930's Swaim's Panacea was still being sold. In the New York Academy of Medicine Library is a hand-written pamphlet announcing a "Hospital for Scrofulous and Syphilitic Incurables to be supported by Subscription" an articles of which states that Mr. James Swaim will supply to the indigent inmates gratis the "Panacea" which is to be "the principal medicine used." No less a talent than Edgar Allan Poe in the Southern Literary Messenger of April 1849 took indirect aim at the audacious claims that Swaim made for his panacea by asking this rhetorical question: "Are our most deserving writers to be forever sneered down or hooted down or damned down with faint praise by a set of men who possess little other ability than that which assures temporary success to them in common with Swaim's Panacea or Morrison's Pills". A complete and mostly intact copy that would benefit substantially by a simple rebacking. Of certain interest to collections of Edgar Allan Poe with whom the author's literary reputation appears permanently fettered see below. Exceptionally scarce. Excerpt from:The Women of the American Revolution More than a century-and-a-half ago Elizabeth F. Ellet 1818-1877 began the process that scholars continue today of recovering and recording the lives and contributions of women. One of the best-known writers of her day Ellet published prolifically in a wide variety of genres. In part because she refused to follow expected roles for women she became embroiled in public battles with prominent literary men such as Edgar Allan Poe and Rufus W. Griswold. Consequently despite her pioneering work as a precursor of feminist scholarship Ellet has been cited by twentieth-century literary critics primarily in negative terms. However Ellet was a major participant in the nineteenth-century literary scene and continues to be acknowledged by historians for her valuable early methodology in recovering women's history. Elizabeth Fries Lummis was born in Sodus Point New York in October 1818 to a well-to-do physician William Nixon Lummis and Sarah Maxwell Lummis. Educated at a female seminary at Aurora New York Ellet began writing poetry in her early teens. Her first book published when she was sixteen and entitled Poems Translated and Original 1835 collected her own poems many previously published. From Wikipedia Elizabeth Fries Lummis Ellet October 18 1818 - June 3 1877 was an American writer historian and poet. She was the first writer to record the lives of women who contributed to the American Revolutionary War. Born Elizabeth Fries Lummis in New York she published her first book Poems Translated and Original in 1835. She married the chemist William Henry Ellet and the couple moved to South Carolina. She had published several books and contributed to multiple journals. In 1845 she moved back to New York and took her place in the literary scene there. She was involved with a public scandal involving Edgar Allan Poe and Frances Sargent Osgood and later another involving Rufus Wilmot Griswold. Ellet's most important work The Women of the American Revolution was published in 1845. The three volume book profiled the lives of patriotic women in the early history of the United States. Budapest Hungary: Privately Printed 1921. Book. Near Fine. Three-Quarter Leather. First Thus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Red 3/4 morocco bordered stamped and lettered in gilt 5 raised bands red cloth covered boards top edge in gilt marbled endpapers. Lightly rubbed at corners spine extremities with a few miniscule nicks along joints and bands. No. 37 of a privately printed edition of 500 "given to subscribers printed only for the betterment of interested intelligent readers." 152 pp. The text block while essentially "as issued" except for slight toning shows all the indications of private printings of the era most evident in a number of light registers and overall does not seem quite "worthy" of the handsome binding thus likely issued in wraps and custom-bound.
