1946 ORIGINAL SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL JOURNAL AND DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A NOTED RUSSIAN BORN ENGINEER INVENTOR AND PATENT HOLDER PROVIDING INSIGHT INTO AMERICA'S RUSH TO SECURE GERMAN 'INTELLECTUAL PRODUCT' IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WAR
UNITED STATES - GERMANY. Good. 1946. On offer is a unique significant notebook and diary detailing an original invention by a very successful American inventor and describing his time in post war Germany. This pocket notebook measures 6.75 inches by 3.75 inches. It is comprised of 84 loose-leaf pages and is 90% complete. The covers are missing but the pages are in good condition. The handwriting is small and tight but legible. Sergei D Mitereff was an engineer with Allied Chemical Corporation. He was born in Russia in 1902. He graduated from the Russian Naval Academy and at some point following WWI he emigrated to the United States. He studied at John Hopkins University graduating in 1927 with a degree in Engineering. He passed away in 1971. Allied Chemical Corporation was established in 1920 to counter Germany's dominance of ammonia and industrial dye production. This notebook details one of several patents Mitereff received for industrial processes he invented. This specific patent is U.S. Patent No. 2116881 dealing with the recovery of urea in the ammonia manufacturing process. The notebook is divided into sections and contains drawings tables and descriptions of various processes. Some entries are in German. In July 1947 he travels to Germany on an assignment to obtain formulae and drawings of urea processing from German factories. His comments provide some interesting insights into the post-war months as the United States and other allies sought to take German manufacturing ideas for themselves: "arr at Hotel Carlton about 1:00 PM local time 4th of July. Room across hall from jewel thief Colonel . " July 4 1946. He means Colonel jack W. Durant who with two other officers was involved in stealing Hesse crown jewels valued from $150000 to 3000000 from Kronberg Castle near Frankfurt. He and his wife were kept before trial in a guarded two-room suite in Carlton Hotel. ". went for car - four trips planned and only three avail. All German drivers. What I will do with him in French zone No rations available . paid respects to Colonel Romera . made date with to see Dr. Balz and others tomorrow . Will ask many specific questions. Everything is black market ." July 16 1946. He probably means German chemist Gunther Balz one of the authors of the Balz- Schiemann reaction a pioneering method for preparation of aryl fluorides. "Tried to get urea flow diagram from Bockmeyer but he not available. Then went to see Balz and try to get more info. On pressure he admitted there was such a thing as O2 system. He is an SB of the first water - a Nazi if I ever saw one . " July 19 1946. He notes a number of places he visited and factories he travelled to including IG Farben the huge German chemical manufacturer. He also comments on the living conditions of the local people: ". went to Oberstein. What a place. The people are really hungry there. They also want to buy cigarettes 50 marks - thats $5.00 a pack and we get them for 8 ¢ ." July 21 1946; ". Each of the Drs who was a Nazi must do a certain amount of laboring work ." July 24 1946. He left Germany on September 5th to return to the United States. His notes also contain a detailed listing of expenses incurred on his trip. This notebook is valuable to a historian for the insight it offers into the actions of the allied governments to secure for themselves the high-quality German intellectual 'product' following the war. His notes list many German American and other Allied officers and scientists by name. His expenses provide some insight into daily costs of living. Engravings from Harper's Weekly in November 1872 all centred on the quinine production in Darjeeling. Production began in the 1860s from seeds sent by the famed botanist Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker. This American track and field athlete specialized in the high hurdles a college star and record-setter who went on to compete in the 1932 Olympics where he earned silver in the 110-meter high hurdles event he later became head coach in track and field at University of Florida 1937-64. A bold signature in black ballpoint with inscription penned above "Best Wishes to Richard Laade" and credentials below "winner of silver medal / in 1932 Olympics in / 120 yard high hurdles" heavy stock 5" X 3" card n.p. Gainesville FL 1985 January 26. Fine. A concise summation of his claim to Olympic fame. With original envelope partly addressed by Beard. Accompanied by two scarce handsomely engraved mementos of the 1932 Olympics: First a printed admission ticket in blue and red ink heavy stock 3" X 2" for the "TRACK & / FIELD / Aug. 5 / 2:30 P.M. / GEN. ADMISSION / $2.00." Decorative border main title along top "Xth OLYMPIAD" ornate Olympic symbol with American shield at center. Very good. Bit of edgewear with minor border loss at upper right. Also a second printed admission ticket in brown ink heavy stock 4½" X 2½" ornate borders and scrolls for the "American Football / Olympic Stadium" on August 8 at 8p.m. Left margin specifies "STAIR / 23 / ROW / 63 / Seat / 107." Good plus. A tad age toned and mildly edgeworn more so along right margin which shows several small edge chips. Verso shows a seating chart for this stadium. An uncommon trio. unknown

This author specialized in spinning yarns for young adults in such books as "Boy Scouts Afloat; or Scouting on the Mississippi in a House Boat" 1918 "Boy Scouts Courageous: Stories of Scout Valor and Daring" 1918 and "The Hidden Islands" 1920. AMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. On custom letterhead Walden neatly prints the name of his latest novel -- "The Voodoo Gold Trail / by / Walter Walden" -- plus title of the first chapter and a lengthy section of the first couple paragraphs signing a second time boldly at the conclusion. While the admirer who wrote him requested an actual working manuscript page Walden instead has neatly written out this passage -- though likely he copied it off of his original manuscript for it bears words and phrases which he's crossed out. From the collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. Also present is a copy of "The Voodoo Gold Trail" Boston: Small Maynard & Company 1922 a very good first edition of this small 8vo volume in blue cloth. unknown

Addressed to Richard C. Laade. Near fine. On "Congress of the United States" letterhead Pepper agrees to a request from an admirer. Accompanied by a fine original glossy 8½" X 6½" black-and-white news agency photograph showing then Senator Pepper on the steps of the Capitol at a political gathering. Printed caption affixed to verso dates this 27 June 1947 captions it "Townsendites Renew 'Assault' on Capital Hill" and describe the scene: "Townsendites here for the 7th Annual Townsend Plan National Convention converged on Capitol Hill this morning to urge Congress to pass the Townsend National Prosperity Plan Bill which is now before the House for the 13th successive year. Photo shows left to right: Senator Claude Pepper D of Fla.; Dr. Francis E. Townsend 80-year-old creator of the pension plan." The old-age pension scheme of this physician and activist 1867-1960 sprang up during the Great Depression and while it never passed it did prove influential when Congress devised the Social Security system. unknown

Illustrated with four engraved plates one for each season. James Thomson 1700-1748 was a Scottish poet and playwright known for his masterpiece "The Seasons" and the lyrics of "Rule Britannia!." First published as a group in 1730 this collection of poems has been reprinted many times. A dispute over the publishing rights to "The Seasons" gave rise to two important legal decisions Millar v. Taylor; Donaldson v. Beckett in the history of copyright. "The Seasons" was translated into German by Barthold Heinrich Brockes 1745. This translation formed the basis for a work with the same title by Gottfried van Swieten which became the libretto for Haydn's oratorio "The Seasons." "The Seasons may be regarded as inaugurating a new era in English poetry. Lady Winchilsea and John Dyer had pleaded by their work for a truthful and unaffected and at the same time a romantic treatment of nature in poetry; but the ideal of artificiality by which English poetry was dominated under the influence of Cowley and Pope was first effectively challenged by Thomson. It was he who transmitted the sentiment of nature not only to imitators like Savage Armstrong Somerville and Shenstone but also to Gray and Cowper and so indirectly to Wordsworth. Cowper in particular was interpenetrated with the spirit and feeling of The Seasons and it is related in a pathetic passage how in the last glimmerings of cheerfulness before his final collapse he walked in the moonlight in St. Neots churchyard and spoke earnestly of Thomson's Seasons and the circumstances under which they were probably written. From 1750 to 1850 Thomson was in England the poet par excellence not of the eclectic and literary few but of the large and increasing cultivated middle class. Thomson's Seasons looks best I maintain it a little torn and dog's-eared Lamb Detached Thoughts on Books and Reading. When Coleridge found a dog-eared copy of The Seasons in an inn and remarked That is fame' Thomson's popularity seemed quite as assured as Milton's." - DNB. .
