Original photograph printed on albumen paper with a very sharp rendering thanks to the photographer's mastery of the difficult wet collodion technique. Rare and impressive photograph made by the very first photographer of Yosemite and featuring one of the pioneers of ecology. The American photographer Carleton Watkins first came to Yosemite in 1861 with his mammoth camera where he took an impressive series of views of the valley. It was partly because of his splendid photographs that President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Valley Grant Act on June 30 1864 declaring the site protected and thus initiating the National Park Service. Watkins continued to take photographs of Yosemite Valley and became acquainted with Galen Clark pictured here at the foot of the 300-year-old Grizzly Giant redwood. Born in Quebec and carried away like many of his compatriots by the California Gold Rush Galen Clark whose doctor gave him no more than six months to live was the first Westerner to discover the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoia trees. He never left the grove becoming its first guardian in 1864 and remaining there for twenty-four years. Although Yosemite Valley attracted artists and wealthy travelers as early as the 1850s Watkins' images did much to promote the site especially after the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. Watkins presented his photographs displayed in redwood frames. at the Paris World's Fair in 1867. They are now preserved in major American institutions such as the MoMa the Getty Museum and the MET. unknown

Chocolate title-label black volume labels all in sheep. Rubbing. Scattered pale foxing. Good copy. François Levaillant 1753-1824 is a French explorer and ornithologist. In 1781 the treasurer of the Dutch East India Company sent him to Cape Province in South Africa. He then collected numerous specimens in the region bringing back more than 2000 bird skins to France. A second voyage 1783-1784 took him north of the Orange River into Namaqualand. He would later publish the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d'Afrique. All his books achieved great success throughout Europe. His ornithological collection would join the Leiden museum France not acquiring it. Some bird names he invented are still in use. Some time later species would bear his name like Levaillant's Cuckoo. This second voyage describes Namaqualand Damaraland Bechuanaland and the Kalahari Desert. Chez Jansen hardcover

Browne including 10 mezzotints including the frontispiece. All the drawings were executed according to very precise recommendations by Dickens the mezzotint engravings expressing despair and the dark sides of the novel while the caricatural figures express joy and humor. As with all of Dickens's works this novel first appeared in serial form March 1852 to September 1853. First printing points: ""elgble"" p19 line 6; ""chair"" p209 line 23; ""counsinship"" p275 line 22 English binding in half burgundy shagreen with small corners. Spine with false raised bands richly decorated. Brown shagreen title label. Traces of rubbing to joints headcaps bands corners and edges. Boards also rubbed. While the text paper is rather clean despite yellowing of some margins near the figures that of the engravings constantly shows browning sometimes heavy mainly in the margins an almost systematic case in Dickens editions due to the use of more acidic paper for the engravings. A few small stains or foxing in the text. Good copy well bound a rare case for these popular editions. The ninth novel published by Dickens and the first of the great panoramic novels depicting society Bleak House came to life in France in 1858 under the title: La maison d'âpre-vent. A profound originality at the time the novel uses two narrators one in the third person the other in the first. The opposition of the two narrations stigmatizes the relationship of the individual to the functioning of society. Many critics see it as one of the author's finest creations.
