In 1908 He Was Called To Yale Where He Served As An Assistant Professor And Published His First Major Work The Meaning Of God In Human Experience 1912. In 1914 Hocking Returned To Harvard Where He Eventually Became Alford Professor Of Natural Religion Moral Philosophy And Civil Polity. Returning To Harvard After The War Hocking Made The Rest Of His Career There. He Led A Highly Influential Study Of Missions In Mainline Protestant Churches In 1932. The Commission's Report Entitled Re-Thinking Missions: A Laymen's Inquiry After One Hundred Years 1932 And Known As The "Hocking Report" Reflected Changing Ideas About The Role Of Western Missionaries In Other Cultures And Generated Fierce Debate. Commission Members Traveled To Asian Cities To Meet Missionaries And Local People. While In China Hocking Consulted With Pearl S. Buck Who Was Developing A Similar Critique Of Missions And Who Later Threw Her Support Behind The Commission's Report. The Commission Recommended A Greater Emphasis On Education And Welfare Transfer Of Power To Local Groups Less Reliance On Evangelizing With Respectful Appreciation For Local Religions. A Recommended Related Goal Was The Transition Of Local Leadership And Institutions. From 1920 To The Late-1930S Hocking Was A Regular Lecturer At The Naval War College In Newport Rhode Island Where He Lectured On "Morale" "Psychology" And "Leadership. Influenced By His Visit To China Hocking Published A Characteristically Open Minded Study Of The Twelfth-Century Chinese Philosopher Zhu Xi. He Argued That Zhu Xi's Thought Was "Scientific" Which Not All European Philosophers Could Claim And Therefore Had Something To Teach Westerners About Democracy. In 1936 Hocking Was Invited To Give The Hibbert Lectures At Oxford And Cambridge Universities In England. These Reflected His Thinking About The Relation Of Christianity To Other World Religions As He Had Begun To Support A Universal Religion. Hocking Thought The Important Elements Were "A Belief In Obligation In A Source Of Things Which Is Good In Some Kind Of Permanence For What Is Real In Selfhood And In The Human Aspect Of Deity." He Pins His Hope More On The Common People Throughout The World Than On The Theologians. In Political Philosophy Hocking Claimed That Liberalism Must Be Superseded By A New Form Of Individualism In Which The Principle Is: "Every Man Shall Be A Whole Man."12 He Believed That Humans Have Only One Natural Right: "An Individual Should Develop The Powers That Are In Him. The Most Important Freedom Is "The Freedom To Perfect One's Freedom." Perhaps Hocking's Most Important Contribution To Philosophy Is "Negative Pragmatism" Which Means That What "Works" Pragmatically Might Or Might Not Be True But What Does Not Work Must Be False. Hocking's Criterion Was Corroborated By Richard Feynman Who Stated That Anything Described As True ". That Same Year He Co-Founded The Save The Redwoods League Which Began Significant Preservation Efforts After Merriam Traveled The Redwood Areas Of Humboldt County California In 1922 Seeking To Spare Its Old-Growth The Effects Of Logging He Witnessed In Redwood Forests Closer To San Francisco. A Biography Which Details His Efforts To Preserve Wild Lands In California And Throughout The United States Was Published In 2005. In 1919 Merriam Served As President Of The Geological Society Of America. In 1920 He Was Appointed Dean Of Faculty At The University Of California Berkeley But He Left That Same Year To Become President Of The Carnegie Institution In Washington D.C. He Accomplishments As President Included Helping To Advance The Educational Programs Of The National Park Service As Well As Helping To Preserve The California Redwoods. Rare pairing of letters exchanged and signed by President Ronald Reagan as Governor and American actor John Wayne comprised of a typed letter signed by Wayne to Reagan and Regan's handwritten draft of his reply. Three pages 8.5 inches by 11 inches the typed letter from John Wayne to Reagan is signed "Duke" by Wayne expressing frustration that a friend had not been appointed to California's Horse Racing Board in favor of a Democrat's term together while taking aim at California car salesman Holmes Tuttle a member of Reagan's 'Kitchen Cabinet' the letter reads in part "I was under the impression from your last note that Mr. Reafsnyder was going to be appointed to the Horse Racing Board in place of Bob Fluor who was appointed by Brown. Dennis Carpenter now informs me that you mentioned to him that you were being pressured to reappoint Bob Fluor who may I mention again was appointed by Brown. We have all read in the L.A. Times that Tuttle Holmes or Holmes Tuttle or whatever his name is has a heavy influence on your decisions. I also understand that he is making a personal issue of this so I guess I can do the same." with postscript that reads in full "Tell Nancy that if you reappoint all the Brown members to all the Boards Commissions and Committees in the State that it won't affect my love for the both of you. D." In fine condition with mail folds. Three pages on stapled yellow lined paper the handwritten drafted autograph letter is signed "Ron" by Reagan and explains his rationale for leaving Fluor on the board the letter reads in part "You'll never know what this Horse Racing Board has cost me in sleeping pills. First off let me clear up one thing about Holmes Tuttle; he wasn't a crusader on this he was in the middle. Actually I put him in a bracket with Walter Knott which means they are my candidates for greatest citizens in the land . Duke if this was a case of choosing between suggested appointees for an existing vacancy the problem would have been quite different but this was a case of replacing a Board member when there seemed to be no reason for doing so." In near fine condition. Also included is a retained carbon copy of Reagan's final typed letter to Wayne. 1961. Group of rare invitations to events surrounding the Kennedy inauguration; from the collection of Helen Keyes longtime personal assistant for the Kennedy family. The collection includes: An invitation to attend "The Official Distinguished Ladies" reception hosted at the National Gallery by the "Official Hospitality Committee of the Inaugural Committee 1961" on January 18th 1961; an invitation addressed directly to Helen Keyes requesting her attendance at a reception and buffet hosted by the National Symphony Orchestra "in honor of Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt" on January 19th 1961 at Constitution Hall accompanied by the original mailing envelope with stamp and address; and an invitation to attend "The Inaugural Concert" hosted by the National Symphony Orchestra on January 19th 1961 at Constitution Hall. The recipient Helen Mary Keyes had ties to the Kennedy family long before her working association. Her father was the dentist to Joe and Rose Kennedy's children and the families' children became friends. Helen played a major role in JFK's 1952 Senate campaign hosting famous 'Ladies Teas' for the rising star of the Democratic Party. Her involvement continued throughout the Kennedy administration and during both the 1960 and 1964 Presidential campaigns. Each piece measures 7 inches by 9.75 inches with the exception of the letter addressed directly to Mrs. Keyes which measures 6.5 inches by 8.5 inches. All are in fine condition with light toning. The 35th president of the United States from 1961 until his assassination in 1963 John F. Kennedy or JFK as he is often referred to was the youngest person to assume the presidency by election and the youngest president at the end of his tenure. Kennedy served at the height of the Cold War and the majority of his foreign policy concerned communist states such as the Soviet Union and Cuba. He increased the number of American military advisers in South Vietnam and authorized numerous operations to overthrow the Cuban government of Fidel Castro including the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion in April 1961. The following October U.S. spy planes discovered Soviet missile bases in Cuba; the resulting period of tensions termed the Cuban Missile Crisis nearly resulted in the breakout of a global thermonuclear conflict. He also signed the first nuclear weapons treaty in October 1963. As a presidential couple the Kennedys differed from the Eisenhowers by their relative youth and their relationship with the media. Historian Gil Troy has noted that in particular they "emphasized vague appearances rather than specific accomplishments or passionate commitments" and therefore fit in well in the early 1960s' "cool TV-oriented culture". The Kennedys were great entertainers in both the White House and "Winter White House" in Palm Beach Florida hosting many social events that brought together the most elite figures from politics and the arts. unknown

Rare first edition of the report of the Dred Scott decision which held that the U.S. Constitution was not intended to include citizenship for African Americans published simultaneously in Washington D.C. and New York. Octavo original wrappers with a decorative woodcut border. From the library of Judge Roland Hitchcock and signed by him from Winsted Connecticut not far from Hartford where the book was originally sold and dated in June 1857 just months after the verdict was issued and the ramifications of the Dred Scott case began to affect other cases around the country. In very good condition with the front wrapper expertly repaired a small area of dampstaining and early Hartford bookseller stamp to the front wrapper. Housed in a custom clamshell case. The Dred Scott v. Sandford case of 1857 popularly known as the "Dred Scott case" was a landmark decision made by the United States Supreme Court in which it ruled that the United States Constitution was not meant to include American citizenship for African Americans regardless of whether they were enslaved or free and so the rights and privileges that the Constitution confers upon American citizens could not apply to them. The decision was made in the case of Dred Scott an enslaved black man whose owners had taken him from Missouri which was a slave-holding state into the Missouri Territory most of which had been designated "free" territory by the Missouri Compromise of 1820. When his owners later brought him back to Missouri Scott sued in court for his freedom. In an opinion written by Chief Justice Roger Taney the Court ruled that individuals of African descent "are not included and were not intended to be included under the word 'citizens' in the Constitution and can therefore claim none of the rights and privileges which that instrument provides for and secures to citizens of the United States." Sherman was a lawyer in New York specializing in labor and insurance and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece Eleanor Sherman Fitch the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter Maria “Minnie†Ewing Sherman Fitch before he died. Until now the book was held at the family estate in Washington County Pennsylvania. American lawyer and jurist Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020 and was responsible for some of the most eventful legal decisions of the past half-century. Nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1993 to replace retiring justice Byron White Ginsburg became the first Jewish woman and the second woman to serve on the Court after Sandra Day O’Connor. Ginsburg spent much of her legal career as an advocate for gender equality and women’s rights winning many arguments before the Supreme Court. Laidlaw Environmental Services Inc. 2000 in which the Court held that residents have standing to seek fines for an industrial polluter that affected their interests and that is able to continue doing so. Gould became acquainted with Ginsburg upon visiting at Harvard in 1971 and '72 after which Gould has said: "We kept in touch over the years when she was on the DC Circuit and the High Court. We exchanged correspondence and reprints over the years. 1877-1880. Unique 19th-century autograph album containing the signatures of six American presidents fifteen senators several cabinet members and governors including Abraham Lincoln Ulysses S. Grant James Buchanan and Franklin Pierce. Narrow quarto bound in one quarter period dark brown cloth over stiff marbled wrappers the autograph album is a repurposed 19th-century caucus record dating from ca. 1870. The caucus book is alphabetically tab-indexed and filled out in ink voters are tracked by their name with caucus results appearing in the back. Although this is labeled “Ward 5†in the first page the term "Ward" was flexible in its usage. This could have been for a Ward election precinct caucus legislative congressional or state convention caucus. The autographs are mounted over the caucus records in their respective alphabetical tab. Also mounted at front are 6 printed pieces of 19th-century ephemera. The autograph album was assembled between 1877 and 1880 and can be dated by a contemporary pencil note that John Sherman had transitioned from the Senate to be Secretary of the Treasury. From the collection of a Mr. Boyd a 19th-century Ward politician in the upper Midwest Minnesota or Wisconsin. The Presidential autographs are primarily clipped from Presidential appointments and include: Abraham Lincoln James Buchanan Ulysses S. Grant Andrew Johnson Franklin Pierce and Rutherford B. Hayes. In very good condition with light rubbing to the extremities toning to the frontispiece and its tissue-guard. A very nice example rare in the original publisher's cloth which is completely free of restoration or repairs. Of note are dozens of illustrations by American painter Winslow Homer early in his career including the "Great Sumter Meeting in Union Square" "The Sharpshooter" and "The Inauguration of Abraham Lincoln." Also of note are hundreds of illustrations by Thomas Nast considered the "Father of the American Cartoon" including several Christmas scenes including the first modern depictions of Santa Claus beginning in the January 1863 issues. In very good condition. Bookplates. A very rare and fascinating literary and political chronicle covering all of the war's major events and battles. Published by Harper & Brothers from 1857 until 1916 Harper's Weekly was the most widely read journal in the United States throughout the period of the Civil War. The Weekly had supported the Stephen A. Douglas presidential campaign against Abraham Lincoln but as the American Civil War broke out it fully supported Lincoln and the Union. A July 1863 article on the escaped slave Gordon included a photograph of his back severely scarred from whippings; this provided many readers in the North their first visual evidence of the brutality of slavery.
