All'origine di questo lavoro sta una grande intuizione: Mann ha compreso quale risorsa potesse rivelarsi per la comprensione storica della musica la documentazione su come il linguaggio musicale veniva trasmesso di generazione in generazione nei vari momenti della storia, ossia, come i musicisti imparavano (e a loro volta insegnavano) a comporre. Ciò che Mann ha visto tra i primi è quanto quei modi di trasmissione della pratica abbiano condizionato lo sviluppo del linguaggio stesso. Attraverso l'esame e il commento di una serie di documenti fino allora considerati di scarso significato, Mann ricostruisce il rapporto didattico che grandi compositori (che vanno da Händel e Bach fino a Berlioz o Cajkovskij, passando per Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, o Schubert) ebbero sia con i loro maestri sia con i loro allievi. Mann può dimostrare in tal modo come solo in una certa fase della storia della musica, circa a partire dal primo ottocento, si sia venuta a creare la nozione di "teoria musicale" così come è intesa oggi, e come questa creazione, radicata sostanzialmente in un nuovo modo di produzione e di consumo della musica, abbia determinato una frattura fra norma e prassi che ha fortemente condizionato lo sviluppo del linguaggio musicale fino alle grandi scosse telluriche del '900. Mann analizza con una cura e una penetrazione instancabili il passaggio dall'insegnamento da uno a uno, da compositore a compositore.‎

Fin dagli inizi della sua attività di studioso Alfred Mann ha indagato il problema della divaricazione tra teoria e pratica che dalla fine del '700 in poi è andata sempre più accentuandosi, soprattutto nell'insegnamento della musica. Secondo Mann tale scissione nasce all'inizio dell'800 con la standardizzazione dei percorsi didattici per i musicisti, quando l'insegnamento della teoria assume una dimensione nettamente specialistica, separata dall'attività di chi fa la musica. Questa nuova organizzazione produsse una rapidissima obsolescenza del metodo tradizionale di trasmissione del mestiere per addestramento diretto da musicista ad apprendista, basato fin dall'inizio sulla pratica, e finì per produrre una frattura tra pratica creativa e insegnamento, laddove in precedenza, ricorda Mann, "gli ambiti dell'insegnante e del compositore, del pensiero didattico e di quello creativo, erano uniti e non contrapposti". La conseguenza fu la nascita di una 'forma' idealizzata di 'fuga di scuola', governata da regole precise, che divenne materia d'esame nei conservatori restando completamente scissa dalla vera pratica compositiva sia dei secoli precedenti sia di quello coevo. Attraverso la prospettiva storica, che Mann sviluppa in questo saggio, diviene chiaro che il significato del termine 'fuga', come quello di 'forma-sonata' e di 'concerto', cambia secondo le epoche, e che non riusciamo a capirlo se parliamo della 'vera fuga'.‎

‎The collection De main de ma tre showcases the facsimiles of the most prestigious scores of the Music Department of the National Library of France. Camille Saint-Sa ns? extremely long career as a virtuoso, as a brilliant pianist and organist (no fewer than seventy-six years of concerts) and his daunting catalogue of works (close to six hundred are known) have helped shape the image of him as a tutelary figure, omnipresent in the musical landscape of his time, the uncontested master of French music, showered with honours and glory, yet the champion of what was, in the young 20th century, an outmoded aesthetic. Such an image ignores, however, that from the outset of his career, at the end of the 1850s, until the 1890s, Saint-Sa ns was, on the contrary, regarded in the artistic world as an agitator, as a propagator of new ideas and as an intermediary between French and Germanic cultures. Republican from his earliest days, he was a major figure in musical life, involved in many concert societies, most notably the Soci t nationale de musique, which he founded in 1871.
