‎Additive Eigenschaften der verdünnten Salzlösungen.‎

‎Stockholm, (P.A. Norstedt), 1887. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. No. 9, Vol.32 of 'Bihang till K. Svenska Vet.Akad. förandlingar'. A very fine and clean copy. Pp. 561-576.‎

‎First German appearance, published five month later same year as the Swedish original, on the theory of electrolytic dissociation.""Through the influence of Edlund, Arrhenius received a travel grant from the Swedish Academy of Sciences which made it possible for him to work in the laboratories of Ostwald in Riga (later in Leipzig), Kohlrausch in Würzburg, Ludwig Boltzmann in Graz, and van't Hoff in Amsterdam. During these Wanderjahre (1886-1890), he further developed the theory of electrolytic dissociation. Arrhenius' theory was, however, slowly accepted at first, but because of neglect rather than active opposition. It was the enthusiasm and influence of Ostwald and van't Hoff that helped to make it widely known. In 1887 Arrhenius met Walther Nernst in Kohlrausch's laboratory. There, too, he carried out an important investigation on the action of light on the electrolytic conductivity of the silver salts of the halogens.""Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927) was a prominent chemist and one of the founders of the science of physical chemistry. He was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the pioneering work which he had done in his famous dissertation on electrolytic conductivity ('Recherches sur la conductivité galvanique des électrolytes', 1884). However Arrhenius is becoming increasingly more known for his discovery of the greenhouse effect and its influence on global temperature.Papers from this supplement series to the 'Proceedings of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' are often mistakenly identified as offprints or 'first seperate edition' (indicating the existence of a jounal edition) because they have their own title page with the publishers named and their own pagination, but they are not - all publications from this series were printed seperatley in this way and issued with wrappers.‎

‎First Edition of the official and complete report of the invention of the ""daguerreotype"", the photographic process invented by Louis Daguerre. Together with the preliminary report of the invention (OF JANUARY 7). The presentation by Arago preceeded Daguerre's own publication ""Historique de description des procédés du daguerreotype et du diorama"", (1839). ""When the attempt to exploit the process of daguerreotype was unsuccessfull, Daguerre and Nièpce decided to offer their method to the government. Daguerre approached Francois Jean Arago, to whom he imparted, under the seal of secrecy his processes and those of Nicéphore Niépce. It was fortunate that Arago possessed such a great insight into the invention, which he received enthusiastically. He reported the invention of the daguerretype to the Academy of Sciences on January 7, 1839. The secrecy, however, was not observed very carefully, for the ""Gazette de France"" published a note abouit it on January 6, 1839, although without printing any details.""(Eder ""History of Photography"").‎

‎"AVOGADRO, (AMEDEO). -‎

‎Ideen über die Acidität und die Alkalität, in Beziehung auf die neuen Entdeckungen Davy's. Von A. Avogadro... frei bearbeitet von Gilbert.‎

‎Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1810. Contemp. hcalf. Gilt spine with gilt lettering. Spine slightly rubbed. In: ""Annalen der Physik und der Physikalischen Chemie. Hrsg. Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert"", Bd. 34 (= Neue Folge Bd. 4). (12),486 pp. a. 6 engraved plates. Avogadro's paper: pp. 64-75. Internally clean and fine.‎

‎First German version of an importent early paper, the first by Avogadro wholly devoted to chemistry. The original paper, in French, appeared under the title ""Idées sur l’acidité et l’alcalinité"" in 1809.""Avogadro published his first article dealing only with chemistry in 1809. This memoir, on acids and alkalies, is interesting for several reasons. In the first place it illustrates his abiding concern with chemical affinity and incidentally the great influence exerted on him by Berthollet. Second, in the opening paragraph, which criticizes the oxygen theory of acidity, it illustrates his radical approach to post-Lavoisier chemistry. He postulated a relative scale of acidity in which oxygen and sulfur were placed toward the acid end of the scale, neutral substances in the middle, and hydrogen at the alkali end. A significant feature of this scale was that it was continuous. Avogadro would not allow any absolute distinctions. He was not, for example, prepared to agree with Berzelius that oxygen was absolutely electronegative. Davy, in 1807, had suggested a connection between acidity and alkalinity and electricity"" Avogadro developed this idea. Another feature of Avogadro’s interests found in this memoir is the subject of nomenclature. He was to give more detailed attention to this in the 1840’s. (DSB).The volume contains many other importent paper e.g. William Herscel ""Beobactungen über die Gestalt des Saturns"", La Place ""bemerkungen über den Ring des saturns, in beziehung auf die widersprechenden Beobachtungen Herschel's und Schröter's über denselben"", Georg Simon Klügel ""Angabe eines möglichst vollkommenden achromatischen Doppel-Objectivs... achromatischer Fernröhre"" with further 2 papers on the same by Klügel.‎

‎First French version of this importent paper which was published, in full in Italian the year after (1846) in ""Memoria della Reale Acad. della Scienze"" vol. 8 (1846). He proves here forthe first time, that atomic volume is greater for the more electropositive elements.""Toward the end of his life Avogadro devoted a total of four memoirs to the subject of atomic volumes. In the first (1843) he pointed out the connection with his classic memoir of 1811 - the mean distance between the molecules of all gases is the same under the same conditions of temperature and pressure. In 1824 he had read to the Turin Academy a memoir in which he had pointed out that the atomic volumes (i.e., the volume occupied by the molecule together with its surrounding caloric) of all substances in the liquid or solid state would be the same if it were not for certain factors and in particular the different affinities of bodies for caloric. But the latter factor was directly related to the electronegativity of the element. Comparing the densities of the elements with their atomic weights, he now concluded that the distances between the molecules of solids and liquids, and consequently their volumes, were greater, and hence their densities compared with their atomic weights were less as the body became more electropositive. Alternatively expressed, the atomic volume (atomic weight/density) is greater for the more electropositive elements, and this is now accepted.""(DSB).The issue contains also R. Piria ""Recherches sur la Salicine"", pp. 257-301.‎

‎In 1819 Dulong and Petit announced that there was a simple relationship between specific heats and atomic weights. Although they suggested that their law might be extended to compounds, it was F. E. Neumann who, in 1831, first applied the law practically to solid compounds. Avogadro, who began his research in this field in 1833 (in the paper offered), ivestigated both liquids and solids. He decided that the formula of a compound in the liquid or solid state could not be the same as that in the gaseous state. He therefore introduced the arbitrary division of molecules and considered, for example, that a molecule of water or ice contained only a quarter as many atoms as one of steam.(DSB).Also with Eilhard Mitscherlich ""Sur le Rapport de la Densité des gaz à leur poids atomiques"", pp. 5-41, textillustr. and his ""Sur la Benzine et les Acides des Huiles et de Stároptes"", pp. 41-59.‎
