ril. Johannes Keplero è una delle figure chiave della rivoluzione scientifica del XVII secolo. Strenuo sostenitore del sistema eliocentrico, Keplero è noto soprattutto per la scoperta dell'ellitticità delle orbite planetarie e per la formulazione delle tre leggi che ancora oggi portano il suo nome. Meno noto è invece che nel 1615 fu proprio Keplero, al culmine della sua carriera scientifica, ad assumersi in prima persona la difesa della madre dall'accusa di stregoneria. Nel processo, che durò sei anni, Keplero condusse una lunga e coraggiosa battaglia per ottenere giustizia e per salvare la madre dalla tortura e dal rogo. Nell'Astronomo e la strega Ulinka Rublack ricostruisce con mano sicura tutti i dettagli di questo doloroso episodio della biografia di Keplero, facendo immergere il lettore nel difficile e volubile contesto in cui egli visse. Il risultato è una storia toccante e coinvolgente che, a partire da un dramma familiare, riporta alla luce qualcosa di più importante: il mondo di una piccola comunità luterana del centro Europa, segnata da profonde tensioni politico-religiose prodotte dalla Riforma protestante e alle soglie della Guerra dei trent'anni. Tra i tanti libri dedicati alla stregoneria, questo è indubbiamente il primo a documentare in modo convincente come la caccia alle streghe non riguardasse soltanto singole donne, bensì intere famiglie e comunità.
