‎ill., br. Come è fatto l'Universo? Questa domanda, che l'umanità si pone almeno da quando è stata in grado di porsi domande, nasconde molti significati. Questo libro, però, la intende piuttosto alla lettera: "Che forma ha l'Universo"? La nostra galassia, la Via Lattea, ha circa 300 miliardi di stelle. Si fa già fatica a immaginare un numero così, ma Edwin Hubble scoprì anche che la nostra non è che una delle innumerevoli galassie presenti nell'Universo. Di fronte a numeri di questa impensabile enormità la mente vacilla, ma per Richard Gott non è che l'inizio della storia.Le galassie si allontanano tra loro e non risultano distribuite in maniera uniforme; sono raggruppate in ammassi intervallati da immensi spazi vuoti. Fritz Zwicky iniziò a parlare di polpette in un mare di spaghetti (gli americani gli spaghetti li mangiano così) o, fuor di metafora, zone molto dense intervallate da ampi squarci più rarefatti. La Guerra Fredda aveva diviso la comunità dei fisici in due metà che raramente comunicavano tra loro, per cui mentre negli Stati Uniti si pensava al cosmo in questi termini, in Unione Sovietica lo si vedeva invece come una specie di alveare geometrico, con le galassie poste ai margini di ampi spazi vuoti: più una gruviera coi buchi che un piatto di spaghetti con polpette.Ma il modello cosmologico inflazionario, proposto nei primi anni ottanta, che dava conto dell'espansione dell'Universo nei primi 10-35 secondi dopo il Big Bang, non era coerente con nessuna delle due strutture proposte. Fu proprio Richard Gott - l'autore di questo libro - a dimostrarlo. Gott propose un modello alternativo, la "ragnatela cosmica", una specie di gigantesca spugna fatta di ammassi di galassie connesse tra loro da sottili filamenti, e enormi buchi vuoti a loro volta connessi tra loro da tunnel cavi. Anni di eroiche osservazioni cartografiche del cosmo hanno cercato di dare un senso a questi modelli teorici, confrontandoli con il vero cielo stellato sopra di noi, con strumenti sempre più sofisticati. Alla fine aveva ragione Gott: l'Universo è davvero una gigantesca ragnatela e questa struttura ci aiuta anche a capire le sue origini e la sua evoluzione futura.‎

DJ has minor shelfwear. ; Heraclides Ponticus (387 - 312 BCE) , also known as Heraklides, was a Greek philosopher who lived and died at Heraclea, now Eregli, Turkey. He has frequently been hailed as the originator of the heliocentric theory. Though this is now generally doubted, he did anticipate the thinking of later astronomers. Heraclides' father was Euthyphron, a wealthy nobleman who sent him to study at the Academy in Athens under its founder Plato and under his successor Speusippus, though he also studied with Aristotle. According to the Suda, Plato, on his departure for Sicily in 360 BCE, left his pupils in the charge of Heraclides. Speusippus, before his death in 339 BCE, had chosen Xenocrates as his successor but Xenocrates narrowly triumphed in an ensuing election against Heraclides and Menedemus. A punning on his name, dubbing him Heraclides "Pompicus, " suggests he may have been a rather vain and pompous man and the target of much ridicule. However, Heraclides seems to have been a versatile and prolific writer on philosophy, mathematics, music, grammar, physics, history and rhetoric, notwithstanding doubts about attribution of many of the works. It appears that he composed various works in dialogue form. The main source of this biographical welter is the collection by Diogenes Laërtius. His major distinction is that he realised, as the result of observation, that Venus and Mercury orbit the Sun as satellites. Some writers have seen this as evidence that he originated the heliocentric theory prior to Aristarchus of Samos and Nicolaus Copernicus. However, it is now generally believed that he was proposing an essentially geocentric model in which those planets orbit the Sun but the Sun, in turn, orbits the Earth along with the Moon, a theory later revived by Tycho Brahe. He was also the first to put forward the theory that the Earth rotates on its axis once a day. Of particular significance to historians is his statement that fourth century Rome was a Greek city. ; 178 pages; Sandpiper reprint.‎

Da über sein Leben nichts bekannt ist, ist die Datierung seines Wirkens schwierig und umstritten. Vermutlich lebte er im 1. oder 2. Jahrhundert. Kleomedes verfasste einen astronomischen Traktat in griechischer Sprache. Die Schrift trägt den Titel Über die kreisförmige Bewegung der Himmelskörper und umfasst zwei Bücher. Inhaltliche Anhaltspunkte und sprachliche Kriterien machen es wahrscheinlich, dass der Traktat des Kleomedes in der Mitte des 2. Jahrhunderts verfasst worden ist. In der Schrift des Kleomedes findet sich eine detaillierte Beschreibung der Verfahren, mit denen Eratosthenes und Poseidonios den Erdumfang berechneten. - Der Traktat enthält eine Zusammenstellung von Argumenten für die Kugelgestalt der Erde. - Kleomedes berichtet über eine Mondfinsternis, bei der Sonne und Mond noch gleichzeitig am Horizont sichtbar waren, und führt dies auf atmosphärische Strahlungsbrechung zurück, was als eine der ersten Überlieferungen zur astronomischen Refraktion gewertet wird. - Der Autor polemisiert an einer Stelle heftig gegen Epikur - nicht nur gegen seine Lehre, sondern auch gegen seinen sprachlichen Stil.
