Image is about 19x22 ½ inches. Each hemisphere is approximately 11 inches 28 cm in diameter. The condition of this sheet is extremely fine. Full bright original hand color very good wide margins. The plate is a bit large for the atlas size and often the lower margin is trimmed. There are a few minute wormholes in the margin not affecting the platemark or image. This is one of the nicer copies we have had. There is no letterpress text on verso.</p><p>This is a famous double-moon map. The left hemisphere shows the Moon's surface with the features named by Hevelius the astronomer who constructed the first Moon atlas. On the right is the nomenclature of Riccioli a Jesuit anti-Copernican. Riccioli's nomenclature prevailed and is still in use today.</p> Homann

Dal 1850 insegno' meccanica razionale all'Accademia Militare di Torino e nel 1865 successe al Plana nella cattedra di Astronomia e nella direzione dell'Osservatorio astronomico dell'Universita'. Autore di una ventina di lavori di astronomia e di un trattato di meccanica razionale per gli allievi dell'Acc. Militari.

Dorna nacque ad Asti nel 1825 e fu direttore dell'Osservatorio astronomico di Torino e come professore di Astronomia in questa citta'. Appartenne tra le altre cose, alla Regia Accademia delle Scienze di Torino, ed ebbe la reggenza della Cattedra di geodesia alla scuola di guerra ed il Consiglio direttivo della scuola degli Ingegneri di Torino. Lascio' molte pubblicazioni importantissime di astronomia, di matematica, di meccanica. La Biblioteca Consorziale Astense conserva di questo illustre studioso astigiano, la Tavola Logipsometrica, un'opera stampata a Torino nel 1870.

Album in folio, cm 57 x 41, pp. (2) di frontespizio + 2 (tabelle) e con 12 tavole fuori testo incise all'acquaforte (A. Nizza) raffigurante la posizione delle costellazioni. Brossura editoriale con notevoli riparazioni e mancanza di lembo del piatto posteriore. Importante lavoro di Alessandro Dorna, direttore dell'Osservatorio astronomico di Torino, che raccoglie la registrazione di stelle cadenti, dalla prima alla quarta grandezza, che vennero effettuate su carte celesti speciali progettate dallo stesso Dorna. Come indicato all'indice dell'opera, gli 'Schiarimenti al catalogo ed alla costruzione delle carte' sarebbero dovuti trovarsi nel vol. XXVI delle Memorie Accademiche. Il posizionamento delle stelle fu calcolato, come previsione, sull'anno 1880. Dorna, astigiano di origine, fu allievo del Plana. Laureatosi in ingegneria idraulica, nel 1850, deceduto il suo maestro, gli venne offerta la cattedra di astronomia e la direzione dell'osservatorio torinese che arricchi' di molti strumenti.
