Differential Equations: Geometric Theory
New York: Dover Publications Inc. Light Creasing on Front Cover; Spine Lightly Chipped; Edges Lightly Soiled. CONTENTS: Preface; I Preliminary Questions; II Existence Theorems. General Properties of the Solutions; III Linear Systems; IV Stability; V The Differential Equation dx/dt = Px qx;t; VI The Differential Equation dx/dt = Px qx;y; VII The Differential Equation dx/dt = Ptz qx;t; VIII Periodic Systems and Their Stability; IX Two Dimensional Systems. Simple Critical Points. The Index. Behavior at Infinity; X Two Dimensional Systems continued; XI Differential Equations of the Second Order; XII Oscillations in Systems of the Second Order. Methods of Approximation; Appendix I Complement on Matrices; Appendix II Some Topological Complements Problems; Bibliography; List of Principal Symbols; Index. SYNOPSIS: This book investigates the area of nonlinear differential equations of the second order. Professor Lefschetz is interested in the important group of problems stirred up over a generation ago by Van der Pol problems that still concern students professional mathematicians physicists and engineers. The first four chapters on preliminary questions existence theorems linear systems and stability provide a thorough and comprehensive coverage of the classical literature. The next three chapters deal with point stability and considerable emphasis is given to the fundamental work of Liapunov particularly to his so-called direct method and to his Soviet disciples noted authorities in this field. In Chapter 8 the discussion of periodic solutions--the n dimensional part is concluded. The remaining chapters cover two-dimensional systems. Chapters 9 and 10 are devoted to the results of Poincare and Bendixson: critical points the index behavior at infinity some special systems. Also included here are the important notion of structural stability and the contributions of Andronov-Pontrjagin and DeBaggis. The last two chapters concern equations of the second order: notably the work of Cartwright-Littleword Levinson-Smith and Levinson and the application of the perturbation method. There are two appendices one on vectors and matrices the other on topology. The book concludes with a list of problems that function as logical extensions of topics discussed in the body of the text. The late Solomon Lefschetz a prominent authority in the field of differential equations was Chairman of the Mathematics Department at Princeton University from 1945-53 and its Henry Burchardt Fine Professor of Mathematics Emeritus. Former President of the American Mathematical Society and editor of Annals of Mathematics he directed the Center for Differential Equations RIAS Baltimore. Second Edition. Trade Paperback. Fine. Alexandroff Paul
Elementary Concepts of Topology
New York: Dover Publications Inc. Previous Owner Markings Highlighting; Light Creasing on Front Rear Covers; Front Rear Covers Spine Lightly Chipped; Edges Lightly Soiled. ALSO KNOWN AS: This Dover edition first published in 1961 is a new English translation of Einfachste Grundbegriffe der Topologie as published by Julius Springer in 1932. WITH A PREFACE BY: David Hilbert. TRANSLATED BY: Alan E. Farley. CONTENTS: Introduction; I Polyhedra Manifolds Topological Spaces; II Algebraic Complexes; III Simplicial Mappings and Invariance Theorems; Index. SYNOPSIS: Alexandroff's beautiful and elegant introduction to topology was originally published in 1932 as an extension of certain aspects of Hilbert's Anschauliche Geometrie. The text has long been recognized as one of the finest presentations of the fundamental concepts vital for mathematicians who haven't time for extensive study and for beginning investigators. The book is not a substitute for a systematic text but an unusually useful intuitive approach to the basic concepts. Its aim is to present these concepts in a clear elementary fashion without sacrificing their profundity or exactness and to give some indication of how they are useful in increasingly more areas of mathematics. The author proceeds from the basics of set-theoretic topology through those topological theorems and questions which are based upon the concept of the algebraic complex to the concept of Betti groups which binds together central topological theories in a whole and upon which applications of topology largely rest. Wholly consistent with current investigations in which a larger and larger part of topology is governed by the concept of homology the book deals primarily with the concepts of complex cycle and homology. It points the way toward a systematic and entirely geometrically oriented theory of the most general structures of space. Trade Paperback. Good. Illus. by Menten Inc. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Philosophy of Space & Time The
New York: Dover Publications Inc. Previous Owner Markings Name Neatly Inked to Half Title Page; Light Creasing on Front Rear Covers Spine; Front Rear Covers Spine Lightly Chipped; Covers Edges Moderately Soiled; Moderate Yellowing Due to Age. BOOK NUMBER: S443. ALSO KNOWN AS: This Dover edition first published in 1957 is a translation of the work first published under the title: Philosophie der Raum-Zeit-Lehre. TRANSLATED BY: Maria Reichenbach and John Freund. WITH INTRODUCTORY REMARKS BY: Rudolf Carnap. CONTENTS: Preface; Introduction; Chapter I Space; Chapter II Time; Chapter III Space and Time; Index. PUBLISHER: Dover Publications Inc. New York. THIS DOVER EDITION IS DESIGNED FOR YEARS OF USE The paper is chemically the same quality as you would find in books priced $5.00 or more. It does not discolor or become brittle with age. Not artificially bulked either this edition is an unabridged full-length book but is still easy to handle. The binding: The pages in this book are SEWN in signatures in the method traditionally used for the best books. These books open flat for easy reading and reference. Pages do not drop out the binding does not crack and split as in the case with many paperbooks held together with glue. The type is legible: Margins are ample and allow for cloth rebinding. SYNOPSIS: An important landmark in the development of the empiricist conception of geometry this book is still one of the clearest and most valuable expositions of the crisis in physical science and mathematics occasioned by the advent of the non-Euclidean geometries. With unusual depth and clarity it covers the problem of the foundations of geometry the theory of time the theory and consequences of Einstein's relativity including: relations between theory and observations coordinate definitions relations between topological and metrical properties of space the psychological problem of the possibility of a visual intuition of non-Euclidean structures and many other important topics in modern science and philosophy. While some of the book utilizes mathematics of a somewhat advanced nature the exposition is so careful and complete that most people familiar with the philosophy of science or some intermediate mathematics will understand the majority of the ideas and problems discussed. PRODUCTION EDITOR: Phyllis Niklas. DESIGNER: Wadsworth Design Staff. COPY EDITOR: Linda Thompson. CONTENTS: Preface 1 Plane Analytic Geometry 2 Vectors in the Plane 3 The Line 4 The Circle 5 Conic Sections 6 Transformation of Coordinates 7 Curve Sketching 8 Transcendental Curves 9 Polar Coordinates 10 Parametric Equations 11 Solid Analytic Geometry; Tables; Answers to Selected Problems; Index. EXCERPT: PREFACE Analytic Geometry with Vectors Second Edition designed for students with a reasonably sound background in algebra and trigonometry contains more than enough material for a three-semester-hour or five-quarter-hour course in analytic geometry. As in the first edition my aim has been to write a text that students will find interesting clear and readable. To this end there are more applications and many new figures especially figures accompanying examples. Vectors are introduced early Chapter 2 and are used throughout. Nevertheless this is not a vector approach to analytic geometry. Vectors are used only where a vector treatment is clearly superior to a nonvector approach. In order to show where vectors can be useful a section on their application has been added. The chapter on conic sections has undergone considerable change. The first edition tended to overemphasize translations; this has been corrected. In order to point out the practical side of conics a section on the reflection properties of conics has been added. The section relating conic sections to cones has been retained. Although it may be considered to be optional I feel that it fills a gap left by most analytic geometry texts. Rather than merely telling the student that parabolas ellipses and hyperbolas are the intersection of a plane and a right circular cone this section actually establishes the relationship giving the geometric significance of the foci directrices and eccentricity. Finally since students often encounter curve fitting in other courses the section on curve fitting is an interesting application that illustrates the relevance of analytic geometry . . .
