Non solo ci lascia le sue memorie, riflessioni, crisi spirituali, ma anche poesie, lettere e preghiere che raccontano l'itinerario spirituale di un'anima eccelsa, a dispetto dell'umiltà e del nascondimento della sua vita terrena. L'amore ha riempito la vita di Teresa, è il cuore della sua spiritualità dell'infanzia spirituale, che consiste nel ricercare la santità non nelle grandi azioni, ma negli atti quotidiani, anche i più insignificanti, compiuti per amore di Dio. Così Teresa indica a tutti noi la sua stessa "piccola via di fiducia e amore". br. Viviamo in un periodo di transizione: dalla civiltà cristiana a un'epoca radicalmente post-religiosa. Le masse, tuttavia, si riconoscono ancora - quantunque a parole - nella religione avita, ma i loro comportamenti si allontanano sempre più dai suoi anacronistici dettami etici. Le élite intellettuali e le persone colte, invece, hanno preso le distanze dalla vetusta mitologia cristiana, che, assunto il punto di vista scientifico-razionale, pare ormai appartenere al mondo delle antiche favole infantili. Ebbene, una volta acquisita questa consapevolezza, come dobbiamo giudicare l'opera e la figura di Agostino? È la domanda che si pone l'autore: il pensiero di Agostino è ancora vivo e attuale? La Chiesa continua a farne un santo, un esempio; Renato Testa, invece, rifiuta con forza quest'interpretazione e, pur riconoscendo che il pensiero di Agostino ha contribuito in maniera decisiva a costruire l'edificio della Chiesa, evidenzia come quest'edificio sia ormai fatiscente e che di questo vada tenuto conto quando si leggono le opere di Agostino con tutti i loro limiti. La conclusione è che Agostino è obsoleto, come l'intero cristianesimo, al di là dell'apologetica cattolica.

Large octavo single issue pictorial wrappers. "Four Men Who Loved a Woman" by Ellery Queen. Also Stuart Palmer Hildegarde Withers Maurice Level Hulbert Footner and others. A large format densely illustrated bedsheet-sized pulp. "The fiction emphasized the woman's point of view was often narrated by a woman and featured as many feminine as masculine detectives. In the rear of the magazine flowered all the usual departments of a more conventional woman's publication . That this magazine would publish much fiction of interest seems improbable. But without effort it contrived to be superb. ILLUSTRATED DETECTIVE selected outstanding writers who had made their mark in the 1920s and mingled these with rising writers of the 1930s. Over the years the magazine would publish work by top names in the mystery field including Ellery Queen Stuart Palmer Sax Rohmer Arnold Kummer Hulbert Footner Vincent Starrett and H. Bedford-Jones. The fiction was polished often strongly compressed and good enough for a large amount of it to appear later between book covers. The magazine appeared monthly for almost six years sixty-nine issues at ten cents a copy. After three years the title was changed to THE MYSTERY MAGAZINE . Covers were tasteful bright and uneventful relying heavily on the faces of self-confident women. Inside was an astonishing amount of material: eight to ten pieces of fiction four or more crime-fact articles and up to ten continuing departments about half of these slanted directly toward women. When the magazine was at its peak in the early 1930s it offered material carefully calculated to appeal to most tastes and both sexes . MYSTERY was as meticulously planned as an orchestral score. Its careful variations played upon every shade of reader interest. It was consciously polished self-consciously feminine. A curious pared sound rang in its fiction as if the stories had been edited with a chain saw but the prose flashed with a bright nickel glitter. In questa nuova autorevole biografia di san Francesco (pubblicata negli USA dalla Cornell University Press, nel 2012), lo studioso domenicano Augustine Thompson è andato alla ricerca del cosiddetto Francesco della storia, al netto delle leggende agiografiche e delle interpretazioni teologiche o culturali. Sul modello della Jesus quest, anche questa Francis quest parte sfatando preliminarmente una serie di tipiche ricostruzioni della figura del Santo che lo arruolano in questa o quella temperie culturale o sociologica: dal Francesco ecologista, romantico, mistico della natura e degli animali, hippie, pacifista o femminista di tante rivisitazioni moderne (cattoliche o laiche) alle interpretazioni teologiche che si sono stratificate - nell'Ordine francescano e fuori - intorno alla biografia storica del Santo. Il proposito di Thompson è stato quello di scarnificare la tradizione delle fonti biografiche francescane per ritrovare il nucleo dei fatti che la critica storica più raffinata può ragionevolmente attribuire alla vita di san Francesco. Quella di Thompson è pertanto una biografia storica e filologica, che porta a compimento in maniera originale il programma iniziato e mai completato da Raoul Manselli con il suo noto San Francesco d'Assisi del 1982. L'opera non si rivolge esclusivamente agli storici, anzi. Si tratta di un'opera leggibile da chiunque abbia un interesse non superficiale alla figura di Francesco, che mette in luce anche la sua dimensione spirituale.
