brossura Questo testo nasce con l'obiettivo di formare le basi' fisico-matematiche della termodinamica e' della trasmissione del calore avendo in mente come' traguardo finale una delle loro principali applicazioni, la progettazione di impianti termotecnici. Pertanto, la trattazione si sviluppa sul piano teorico nelle prime due parti, di termodinamica e trasmissione del calore, per poi dedicarsi, nella terza parte, ad argomenti introduttivi di carattere applicativo in ambito termotecnico. Vengono così definiti componenti e schemi elementari di impianti, in un contesto omogeneo e coerente a quello teorico. In particolare, la prima parte espone la termodinamica in via deduttiva, mentre la parte di trasmissione del calore tende ad educare alla formalizzazione di problemi termici e ad affrontarne la soluzione, anche in via approssimata, con metodi diversi. Con riferimento alla terza parte, il testo non vuole e non può essere un manuale, ma si propone di guidare per mano il futuro ingegnere verso un corretto approccio agli impianti in naturale applicazione delle nozioni teoriche apprese.

Nata nel 1867 a Varsavia, allora parte dell'impero russo, ma naturalizzata francese, Marie Curie è stata la prima donna a vincere un premio Nobel (1903, Fisica) per i suoi studi sulla radioattività e l'unica donna ad averne vinti due (1911, Chimica), quest'ultimo assegnatole per aver isolato il radio allo stato puro. È stata anche la prima donna a salire in cattedra alla Sorbona, dopo l'improvvisa scomparsa nel 1906 di suo marito Pierre, investito da un carro sotto la pioggia in Rue Dauphine a Parigi. La stessa Marie Curie morirà di leucemia a causa della costante esposizione alle radiazioni che, a tutt'oggi, rendono le sue carte e persino i suoi libri di cucina pericolosi da maneggiare. Così come per il precedente volume dedicato ad Alexander Fleming, la collana propone le prolusioni di un altro gigante della scienza contemporanea, il cui ingegno e spirito di sacrificio hanno significato così tanto per il genere umano, in un torno di tempo in cui è essenziale ricordare l'importanza della scienza per la difesa della salute e della vita di tutti.
