[Recherches sur la longueur du pendule de seconde simple.] - Le pendule de Kater est un pendule réversible dont l'idée première revient à l'astronome, mathématicien et physicien wurtembergeois Johann Gottlieb Friedrich von Bohnenberger et que le physicien et officier britannique Henry Kater proposa d'utiliser comme gravimètre en 1817. Il donne la valeur de g (laccélération de la pesanteur sur la Terre) avec une précision de lordre de 10-5 m/s2 et pendant un siècle a joué un grand rôle en gravimétrie et géodésie. Contrairement aux instruments utilisés antérieurement pour mesurer la valeur locale de laccélération de la pesanteur, on n'avait pas besoin de connaître le centre de gravité ni le centre d'oscillation de ce pendule, d'où sa plus grande précision. Pendant près d'un siècle (c'est-à-dire jusque dans les années 1930), le pendule de Kater et ses améliorations successives demeurèrent la méthode standard de détermination du champ de gravité terrestre pour la reconnaissance géodésique. Depuis, on ne l'utilise plus quà des fins pédagogiques, pour expliquer les propriétés du pendule harmonique. - Edward Sabine est un astronome britannique, né le 14 octobre 1788 à Dublin et mort le 26 juin 1883 à East Sheen dans le Surrey. En 1821, il entreprend des expériences sur les côtes de lAfrique et de lAmérique du Nord ainsi quen Arctique pour déterminer précisément la forme de la terre par lobservation du mouvement dun pendule. Il fait paraître ses premiers résultats en 1825 - George Gabriel Stokes (13 août 1819 1er février 1903), 1er baronnet, est un mathématicien et physicien britannique né en Irlande. Ses contributions majeures concernent la mécanique des fluides, l'optique et la géodésie.
