Rare exemplaire de l'édition originale de cet ouvrage très important, dans lequel le physicien Georges Claude (1870-1960) développe l'histoire de la mise au point du procédé industriel de liquéfaction de l'air, à l'origine de la création de la société Air Liquide. Cet ouvrage scientifique est rédigé dans un style familier très plaisant : "les bactériologistes, qui ne savent que faire pour énerver les microbes, n'ont pas manqué de leur jouer avec l'air liquide un tour de leur façon - en les y envoyant prendre un tour de natation. Or, à leur profond ébahissement, les microbes - gens d'esprit - ont fort bien pris la... leçon. Alors qu'une modeste température de +50° suffit parfaitement pour détruire les germes bactériques, les - 190° de l'air liquide leur ont paru aussi indifférents qu'à un poisson une pomme, et ils s'y sont trouvés... comme un poisson dans l'eau ! La preuve, c'est qu'après trois semaines d'immersion, le bacille pyocyanique de Charrin, ramené dans un monde meilleur, recommence à sécréter philosophiquement la matière bleue qui lui a valu son nom, exactement comme s'il se f... ichait du public en général et des bactériologistes en particulier". Georges Claude participera également à l'invention du tube à néon.
