Stralcio da 'Opuscoli scelti sulle scienze e sulle arti tratti dagli Atti delle Accademie e dalle Collezioni Filosofiche, e Letterarie', vol. II, primo periodico scientifico milanese edito dal 1778 al 1803 che, sotto la cura di Carlo Amoretti e Francesco Soave, raccoglieva saggi e memorie dei principali scienziati dell'epoca. Estratto di una memoria di Johan Carl Wilcke, fisico svedese (Wismar 1732 - Stoccolma 1796) in cui e' descritta la macchina di Papin, secondo pero' una semplificazione apportata proprio da Wilcke. Viene quindi descritto l'uso di questa macchina in cucina, antenata della pentola a pressione: "il vantaggio di questa pentola riguardo alle comuni si e' che nel far cuocere la carne si risparmiano per lo meno tre quarti si' di tempo che di carbone...".

I pattern delle onde che descrivono i protoni, i neutroni e tutti i loro parenti ricordano le vibrazioni di strumenti musicali, e in effetti le equazioni matematiche che governano questi due domini, superficialmente molto diversi, sono in realtà molto simili. Quest'analogia musicale risale alla preistoria della scienza: già Pitagora scoprì che le note armoniose sono quelle suonate da corde le cui lunghezze sono in una semplice relazione numerica, mentre Keplero trascorse anni in tediosi calcoli ed erronee ipotesi alla ricerca dell'armonia nascosta dell'universo. Frank Wilczek, fisico teorico vincitore del Premio Nobel, riprende questa metafora nella descrizione della realtà delle masse parlando di "musica del vuoto", moderna espressione dell'antica, inafferrabile e mistica musica delle sfere.
