It now became an urgent task to incorporate the phenomenon indicated by the term 'spin' into the new sscheme of things. The initial step was taken by Pauli himself - in the paper offered - who proposed that the wave function of an electron, besides being by the continously variable positional coordinates, should be considered as also depending on a spin variable, capable of two values only...Thereby Pauli paved the way for the relativistic theory of the electron and of hydrogen-like atoms which we owe to Dirac. ‎First edition of the first announcement of Pauli's Exclusion Principle which gives a criterion for the electronic structure of atoms, and explains the periodic table and the combining properties of the elements.Pauli first formulated his exclusion principle in this article in an attempt to explain the structure of the periodic table. By introducing an additional quantum number, namely the spin of an electron, to the already known three quantum numbers in Bohr's atom model, and by postulating that no two electrons can have the same four quantum numbers, Pauli could explain the number of electrons allowed in the outermost shell, e.g., explaining the varying lengths of successive periods in the table. The exclusion principle turned out to be applicable to all fermions, and thus plays a role in a variety of physical phenomena. For example it explains the formation of degenerate matter in white dwarfs and neutron stars. ‎First appearance of these 8 papers constituting Perrin's major work on the Brownian motion and establishing THE REALITY OF THE MOLECULAR-KINETIC VIEW OF MATTER. Perrin's experimental verification of molecular reality and his 'classical' verification of the statistical method was of great importece to the subsequent rise of the quantum revolution with the introduction of quantum mechanics. Perrin's experiments helped to confirm Einstein's analysis of the Brownian movements (1905), and calculated a value for Avogadro's numbers and thereby the size of atoms and molecules.Perrin was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics, 1926 ""for his work on discontinuity in the structure of matter, and in particular for his discovery of the equilibrium of sedimentation"" ""The work for which Perrin is best known is his investigation of Brownian motion, the erratic movements performed by microscopic particles in suspension in a fluid, now interpreted as being caused by the continous, irregular bombardment of the particles by the molecules of the surrounding medium. Perrin thought that collodially suspended particles undergoing Brownian motion would distribute themselves vertically in a definite way at equilibrium. By counting small particles of gum resin suspended in water, Perrin found that their number decreased exponentially with increasing height. He proved that this variation follows from kinetic theory and that from it he could calculate a value for Avogadro's number. Since the size of a water molecule appeared in the equation for the vertical distribution of the brownian motion particles, for the first time the sizes of atoms and molecules could be calculated from actual observations. As henri Poincaré wrote: ""The brilliant determination of the number of atom (in a mole) made by Perrin has completed the triumph of atomism.... The atom of the chemists is now a reality.' ‎First appearance of Perrin's doctorial thesis, in which he definitly settled the question of the common nature of cathode rays and of the recently discovered X rays, showing them to be particles. The experiments prepared the way for J.J. Thomson's determination in 1897 of the charge-mass ratio of these particles, electrons. In 1896 Perrin won the Joule Prize of the Royal Society for his experiments on cathode rays and for his preliminary studies on Röntgen's X rays, these investigations formed the content of his thesis. Perrin received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1926 for this and other work on the discontinuous structure of matter, which put a definite end to the long struggle regarding the question of the physical reality of molecules.""During the 1890s he was attracted to the study of cathode rays, which Crookes had shown to be electrically charged. Even so, there remained controversy whether they were particles (as it seemed they would have to be if they were charged) or whether Crooke's observations were in error and they were actually a form of wave radiation. Perrin settled the matter for all in 1895 by showing that the radiation could be made to impart a large negative charge to a cylinder upon which they fell. The cathode rays must, therefore, consist of negatively-charged material, and must be particles rather than wave. J.J.
