L'ordine del mondo. Le simmetrie in fisica da Aristotele a Higgs
ill., br. Il mondo ci appare come una lunga serie di contingenze locali: ogni fatto accade per ragioni sue e quindi ogni previsione relativa al fatto successivo sembra azzardata. C'è però un altro modo di guardare il mondo, ed è quello fondato sulle regolarità intrinseche, sulle trame ordinate della sua tessitura sottile. In fisica il discorso sulla struttura del mondo giunge a noi addirittura da Anassimandro, ma è con Einstein che si fa strada prepotentemente l'idea di necessità, o di inevitabilità, nel mondo fisico. È con la relatività ristretta, nel 1905, che per la prima volta entra a far parte della fisica il concetto di simmetria come elemento fondamentale della spiegazione del mondo. Da Einstein in poi, il mondo apparirà dotato di una sua struttura intrinseca, che permette lo sviluppo di certe regolarità, mentre ne nega altre, proprio come avviene nel "Castello dei destini incrociati" di Italo Calvino, dove il gioco di incroci tra le storie raccontate dai tarocchi permette alcuni sviluppi narrativi e solo quelli, con regole ben definite e inaggirabili.

From the Preface: "This book has its roots in the first part of a course on techniques in elementary particle theory given to first- and second-year graduate students at the University of Sussex in 1963-1964. It takes the subject as far as form factors and some of their applications. Readers should be familiar with relativistic wave equations free field quantization elementary uses of Feynman diagrams preferably Noether's theorem and the elementary theory of functions of a complex variable. The course also covered dispersion representations for forward scattering the Mandelstam representation partial waves and bootstraps; but these are already well treated in other books and review articles. The lecture notes have been rewritten primarily for students concerned with dynamical calculations involving the weak and electromagnetic couplings of strongly interacting particles. The emphasis is on dynamics. For example internal invariance properties of the strong interactions and the manner of their breaking by the weak and electromagnetic couplings are both assumed known; but the special role of conserved currents in dynamical problems is considered in detail. Although the field so defined is an active one there exists for the time being a fairly well-circumscribed corpus of techniques for handling it. These methods are distinctive because they regard strong-interaction parameters such as phase shifts as input rather than output and because field theory is more manifestly relevant to them than to pure strong-interaction physics. Unfortunately the ingredients are scattered far over the literature; and certain steps in such calculations suffer from an undeserved reputation of triviality though it is difficult to read papers in which they are omitted and though their omission tends to invite error. The book is intended to be elementary in the sense that it is reasonably self-contained at its own level and explicit enough for easy reading throughout.". First Edition. Hardcover.
